Four years after my last visit here, I returned today and found that little has changed in terms of food quality and ambiance at Koffee. The veggie ploughman sandwich was a superb snack after a hike through East Rock, with whole grain mustard and mango chutney transforming what would otherwise be an unremarkable cheese sandwich. This is definitely a cozy coffee spot with a very unique, funky vibe. Free WiFi and a variety of tables, couches, chairs offer a good spot to work while you drink. However, it was so packed on the weekend that I couldn't get a table to sit at - so you might want to scope it out and wait for a table before ordering. The staff is super friendly and will give you suggestions on things to try if you are feeling indecisive. I'm not sure if it was because I went late in the afternoon, but there was a very small food selection (only 2 types of sandwiches left). My latte was good, but my expectations were pretty high after reading previous reviews. So I was left slightly disappointed. They do offer beer and wine as well for a late night drink. And they have coffee cocktails listed on the menu. They aren't available yet, but they sounded delicious and I think it'd be worth another visit to try them out. read more

Wow, this place was so cool and now it's like your disturbing the baristas when you show up. They used to close at 11:00 and now they close at 9:00, but they close down the espresso machine at 8:15. They used to put the the left over pastries out at closing but now they wrap them up for the next day. Finally at closing time the ride baristas start yelling obnoxiously for everyone to get out! I went to Koffee tonight to hang out on a nice Friday night with my husband. When we got there we learned that they now close at 9pm instead of 11pm. The once friendly and warm service wasn't offered this time. I felt like we were bothering the employees. Talk about hipster coffee shop. Koffee on Audobon is cooling and vibing in the early mornings. This coffee shop has great vibes to just hang out drink some coffee and snack on a bagel. They also have these bite size assorted flavors of brownie bites, such as cheesecake and blondie. They looked very yummy, but I just purchased a large iced coffee. This iced coffee was very smooth and had a bold flavor. Loved this coffee shop, stopping in here was a great start to my day! read more

I like this place because they're open very late at night. Few coffee shops in New Haven are open to 10 or 11 o'clock. I like the divey and grungey atmosphere provided by its decor. You might say it's the anti-Starbucks of coffee shops. I admit it is kinda cozy. However one thing that bothers me is that perhaps it's almost "too" grungey. What I mean is the furniture looks like something not found at a tag sale, but rather something found at a junk yard or a party-hardened fraternity house. Maybe at one time it looked in good shape but now it appears to be past its prime and should probably be discarded. I'll sometimes visit after work with my good work clothes and I'm almost afraid to sit on some of the sofa's and cushions. They just send off an "icky" vibe. I believe picking up some new furniture would make a huge improvement to this place. It doesn't have to be brand new. It just has to look clean and presentable. That's really my only complaint about this place. Both service and coffee is fine. read more

Koffee on Audobon is the coziest, homiest coffee spot in downtown New Haven! Personally, I would not be able to study in here (I prefer a more structured study space) but I think Koffee is a great place to simply catch up with friends, or lose yourself in a book. There is an assortment of comfy sofas and chairs of all different styles. I recommend their hot espresso-based drinks, namely the Nutella Latte (super tasty!) and the Mocha (rich and creamy). Unfortunately the one time I ordered an iced coffee it was quite weak. I have tried almost all of their sandwiches (mainly through catered events), and these are my top recommendations: the Stack (Grilled chicken, fresh mozzarella, tomato slice, mesclun greens and a delicious zesty pesto/mayo), Odd but Good (Ripe brie with juicy apple slices drizzled with clover-flower honey), Thanksgiving Leftovers (Roasted turkey, smoked bacon, tomato cranberry jelly and mayonnaise) and Veggie Ploughman (Sharp cheddar cheese , crisp cucumber, tamarind chutney and seeded pub mustard). The baguette can be a little hard, but all the ingredients are always fresh-tasting. Furthermore, these are not your average lettuce-tomato-deli meat sandwiches!! Koffee's sandwiches are put together so uniquely and thoughtfully, and flavor profiles complement each other well. For example, I didn't think I would enjoy the Odd but Good, but the brie+apple+honey combination was to die for - it was delicious. read more

Koffee is my go to Sunday study spot. The shop is split into two sections: one filled with comfortable couches for lounging around in and one filled with study desks and large utilitarian tables for those who come here to get work done. They also have a lot of outlets all over so there's no fear of the dreaded outlet wars. Lastly, the bathrooms are clean and not teeny tiny. The food selection is good, especially their homemade treats and excellent sandwiches. I'm not a big fan of coffee, but I do make an exception for the nutella coffee here. Yup, coffee+nutella = match made in heaven, I kid you not. Just get it. Overall I really like Koffee a lot. Good drinks, food, ambiance, and awesome music. I've pulled out my phone to Shazam a song here quite a few times. One last note: there is a $10 minimum for credit/debit cards. read more

I have been a loyal patron of Koffee on Audubon for 6 years now, even before I was a grad student at Yale, I came here and immediately fell in love. Now, through all my time in New Haven, Koffee has been a staple in my life and has seen me through all of my highs and lows - meeting new friends, writing my dissertation, applying for jobs, collaborating on group projects. I seriously do not know if I would have gotten through my PhD without Koffee and the amazing energy and vibes I get every time I come here. From the minute you walk in, the baristas are always friendly and conversational. They treat you like an old friend who you can have a conversation with no matter how long it's been since the last time you called. On a bad day, they know and try to give you a little extra boost, whether it's a laugh or an extra punch on your frequent drink card. While it definitely gets crowded when students are around, you can usually find a spot after waiting a few minutes for the herd to thin. If I plan to stay for more than a few minutes, I try to make sure I buy a little something every hour or so and always tip to show my appreciation for how awesome this place is. I've tried to find a Koffee equivalent in New York, and am always disappointed when I find overcrowded, overpriced coffee spots in New York where there are no plugs and inane conversations happening around me. I wish that wherever I move next, I can find another place as amazing as Koffee. read more

I've been to this place twice so far. I found it when looking for a nearby coffee place after coming to CT on business appointments. The first time I was there the girl behind the counter was dressed in a nutcracker outfit! It was so neat and really caught my attention and made me smile. The service was nice and the place looked comfortable even though I didn't stay and eat. The nutella coffee was good. Not amazing as I had hoped, but decent. What had me coming back though was their little sandwiches. They all have interesting names and look to be the kinda sandwiches you don't find elsewhere easily. I fell in love with the turkey cranberry one (called something like "Thanksgiving Leftovers" maybe? I'm terrible at remembering names...) There was also some kind of an apple one I wanted to try. Om nom nom. So a unique menu and unique place! My sole complaint, which may be more of a complaint about CT, is what's up with all the meters? Especially 15 min meters? Hard to actually stay and eat at the place when I can't leave me car outside for more then 15 minutes! But that's not really the coffee shop's fault. read more

I am a huge fan of this coffee shop. Really friendly and fast service. The coffee is always strong and the baked goods are always delicious. The atmosphere has a great eclectic vibe with people from all walks of like working and chatting. There is mismatched furniture and soft lighting for a great working environment. Koffee is my first choice for coffee when I need a pick-me-up during my work day. The coffee is very good, there's a nice variety to choose from each day, and I appreciate that the only iced coffee option is cold brew. Koffee makes excellent lattes and other concoctions, and while I normally drink my coffee black, I like having the extensive beverage menu along with options of both soy and almond milk as well as cinnamon and nutmeg shakers, and sugar water and agave syrup available if I want to mix it up. There's a decent selection of baked goods, pre-made sandwiches, and containers of veggies and hummus if I want a quick lunch or snack to go. Koffee can get busy, but I've never had to wait in much of a line to order anything. It appears to be a popular place to meet up with groups, or camp out and study. Koffee is one of my favorite secret treat for me spots in New Haven. I was there about a month ago and I wanted a little treat. I had a coffee and small banana oatmeal muffin.  I prepared my coffee and walked to my car. To my chagrin,  I had lost my muffin. I retraced my steps only to end up back at the counter with no muffin. The young lady at the counter was extremely understanding and replaced it. It was delicious. 2 days later, while looking for something under the car seat I found the lost muffin. It too was delicious.  Today I finally had a chance to visit again and I told the story to another person at the counter as I paid for the muffin.  "He asked, did you eat it?" Absolutely! Strangely enjoyable. Of the handful of times I have visited -- Koffee is always packed. Students, professors, coffee connoisseurs -- space is hard to come by. They offer MANY hot/cold drinks. On any given day there are 5 kinds of cofee: a house blend, french, flavor of the week, single estate and decaf on deck. But I think they are most good at their cafe au lait and expresso (local roaster) They have food, all types of food actually: cookies, muffins, croissants, tea breads, scones, bagels, sandwiches and salads. But by lunchtime/midday, most if not all the good stuff is gone, so be conscious of that if you're hangry. read more

I like this place slightly less than Koffee too. It's very different. The baked goods here are good, but in my opinion not as good (they are certainly not the same!) as the ones offered at Koffee too. The drinks are more or less the same, and as such are excellent. The atmosphere is radically different. This place has much more character. It is also less preppy/upscale, which I like--but it's New Haven for Christ's sake--and there are still too many preppy types frequenting this place. However, the atmosphere here is also more skeezy...more sticky surfaces, fruit flies, etc. Overall though I like the atmosphere better--especially since there's a bit more comfy seating. The room in the back is very well-lit with natural light, which is a huge plus. There is outdoor seating here too; it's not the best seating (metal chairs and rickety hard round tables) but it's one of the few coffee shops offering outdoor seating, so that's a plus. The lines here are usually shorter than at Koffee too. When I write my review I see I'm making this sound better than Koffee too. But I'd take Koffee too any day...why? Even though this place is closer to where I live, I can't help but feel it's a bit out of the way, off the beaten bath, and I don't like that. read more

I'm visiting New Haven and yelped for good coffee shops to get some work done. Koffee came up near the top so I figured I would try the Nutella Latte everyone is raving about. The drink was really quite mediocre. A shot of espresso with steamed chocolate milk and hazelnut syrup. It was very sweet to begin and progressively became sweeter as I got closer to the bottom. I barely tasted any coffee. My interaction with the barista was also just meh. As I tried to pay, she held on to my credit card for a minute while chatting with her co-worker. Then after she was done talking she turned to me and said "our credit card minimum is $10." All of that said, 3 stars instead of 2 because of the ambience. Large tables with many outlets make it a perfect spot to study and work. Well-lit. The music was also appropriate - interesting but not distracting and at a good volume. I would come back to do work and likely get some iced tea next time. read more

I like the coffee and I like the atmosphere, I don't even mind the 1 hour limit after buying something. Hey, I just bought something so I wanna sit and enjoy it - out of my way hipster tramp. And that limit is almost never enforced. So what's the problem? You ask. I'm glad you've been following so far so you could ask such an insightful question. At Koffee I had the displeasure of eating the single most disgusting muffin I've ever ingested. I will probably be going to Cafe Romeo to sit and work from now on. Koffee has the best atmosphere of any coffee spot in New Haven. It is warm and inviting, such a refreshing difference from the sterility of Blue State or Panera. And you can actually TALK with your friends instead of feeling like you are annoying the studying/pretending to be studying Yale kids. The tea selection is great, though I wish they'd bring back to coconut oolong tea! (Supply issue, from what I understand.) There is also a great selection of healthy/local snacks. I have never liked the coffee at Koffee. There is something wrong with the taste and color of it. When I add milk or cream to it, it turns out brownish grey. Koffee, when it comes to coffee, color matters! Also, it does not taste strong enough to me. However, they have a pretty good mint tea that I recommend. Staff is cool. Place is cool. Good: The red Christmas lights glowing on the walls with faint indie music playing in the background makes Koffee an ideal place for light work or coffee breaks with friends. The baristas are quite friendly, and they always seem ready to chat with patrons. Music isn't played too loudly, and the temperature inside always seems just right. Also, NO MORE CREDIT CARD MINIMUM. Bad: - It can get very crowded in the afternoon and evening, so your best bet is to go there between 5:00-7:00pm (when most Yale students are still at dinner). - Their hot chocolate isn't very good (maybe a 5.5/10), and their lattes are only slightly better (6/10). - They have a fruit fly problem; that was actually the main reason why I left after working there for only thirty minutes. - When I took off my backpack to put on the ground next to me, I was surprised to see that there were crumbs ALL OVER the place. It grossed me out, so I ended up placing my backpack next to me on the couch. - When I went to to the bathroom, there was some feces on the toilet seat. All in all, I love the ambience but I just don't think it's very clean. Call me OCD if you want, but it's definitely a problem when there are crumbs all over the place, empty cups lying around, fruit flies circling you the entire time, and feces on the toilet. read more

This is tied with Book Trader for my #1 favorite coffee shop in New Haven. I come here often to study, and I always have such productive work sessions here because the noise level is just right and the vibe is so low-key and relaxing. The decor is super quirky and is reminiscent of a moody and exotic antique shop, complete with slightly gaudy/mismatched interior decorations and hipster grad students. The workers here are exceptionally friendly and easygoing, and many of them reflect the same youthful artistic energy that this place attracts. Pretty sure Koffee hires by perceived hipness and/or the likelihood that the candidate has released an EP on the metaphysical allegory of all-organic farms. Same thing I guess? At night, this place turns into "Koffee After Dark," where they host evening performances and offer some creative cocktails. I haven't gone yet, but I plan to go soon! As far as the daytime menu, Koffee has a nice selection of muffins (including micro-muffins and jumbo muffins). The muffin tops aren't as crusty as I like them, but they're pretty tasty. Unfortunately, the food selection is a bit pricey/lacking in variety, but there are some salads and yogurt cups for the hungry. The coffee is pretty solid, and they offer almond milk on the counters, which I appreciate a lot because almond milk is the lifeblood of millennials. Koffee is my favorite New Haven coffee shop. I took lessons and participated in camps and ensembles at NMS next store for all throughout middle and high school and now I work at NMS in the summer. Throughout all of these years, Koffee has remained an institution in my caffeination and sustenance. You can't make a bad choice here. Lattes, coffees, chai, sandwiches, parfaits, sweet treats, and after-dark cocktails all are big winners at Koffee. The service is exceptional - friendly and quirky - and they have a great rewards program for regular customers. The atmosphere is artsy, but in a very non-pretentious "we're just weird New Haven people" way. Highly recommended for a quick bite, a cup of something to go, or a place to work for a couple of hours with a cup of tea. Koffee? No. Koffee! read more

Comfortable space for reading, writing, or talking quietly. You can almost always find a seat. The coffee is fine but unremarkable; stick to simple drinks, because lattes tend to be bitter or off-tasting. Also, they have delicious muffins and mini-muffins that are a perfect affordable snack.
