The day we went was surprisingly busy because of course it was their 20th anniversary celebrations and we had no idea! Even with it being incredibly busy things came out quickly! I got to try a peach slushy margarita thingy (I forget the cute name) and that was delicious and refreshing! All the food was delicious and well made! My husband really enjoyed the burger and commented how much he liked the meat mix. The server was a delight, and all around it was a good choice to stop by! We will be back next time we're in Kernville!

The space is large though, so it doesn't look awkward. FOOD The grilled bratwurst sandwich was great and the breakfast burrito might be even better. The ingredients were high quality and the entree were done well. SERVICE Service was friendly and welcoming.

The man who took our order and served the food was extremely knowledgeable about the ingredients (we asked several questions) and was very attentive during our meal. If you're into German food, this might be your only option in town. Thankfully it's a good one and there's plenty to choose from if you're not into German cuisine.

Disclaimer: I'm very critical and 5 star ratings are reserved for places that have really impressed me. 3 and 4 star ratings for me are for average good. On our travels I "yelped" ahead to see where we should eat while going through Tehachapi. This place had great reviews so we had to check it out. Bottom line, they've got good food. They specialize in baked goods, pastries and sandwiches. However, I'm so critical, yet I like this place, that I figure its only fair to rate each item we tried. My 4 star above is for the place itself. It's cute, the people are kind and they have a great concept. However, the bathroom setup is very odd and most of their seating is outside. Sandwhiches: overall, I have to give them a 3 out of 5 star and I only give them that much because they do put plenty of meat on them. Beyond that, they are nothing special. My wife and I shared the turkey on shepard bread. It wasn't oven roasted, it was more like a smoked turkey (had a consistency more like ham) which we thought was kind of funky. Others might really enjoy it, but we didn't. One of my daughters had a basic roast beef on shepard bread. In all fairness, she had basically nothing on it, so it was hard to say. However, there was lots of meat and the bread, like ours, was soft and fresh. My other daughter had a turkey on their cheesey bread. I thought that the cheesey bread made it a little better, but still didn't care for that turkey. My son had the turkey sandwich as well, same deal. We wanted to sample their other baked goodies later, so we grabbed a few things for the road. We got the lemmon bar, a bear claw, a macaroon, a fruit pastry and a slice of German chocolate cake. Everything was very good and they get 5 stars from me on the baked goods with exception to the cake. The German chocolate cake was not good at all (sorry Kohnen's). First of all, they prepare it in this square, clam shell container for display and that last topping of icing gets smashed to the lid when they close it. This causes it to stick to the lid and it comes off the cake upon opening the container. Not a real big deal, but something nonetheless. Secondly, the cake portion itself was pretty dry. I'm not impressed with it at all. Like I said though, the rest of our treats were outstanding. You can't hit a home run everytime. I bet if I had the carrot cake instead of the G-chocolate I wouldn't of had anything to cry about. Again, bottom line is that it's a great place to try out on your drive through Tehachapi. I have no doubt I'll visit them again someday. read more

Kohnen's Country Bakery in Tehachapi, California is a must-visit destination for anyone who enjoys great food and loves the traditional charm of old-world bakeries. The café can get quite busy during lunchtime and on weekends, so be prepared to wait in line. However, the wait is absolutely worth it. The seating is cafeteria-style, which may not be ideal for everyone. Nevertheless, the delicious food more than makes up for it. The Tuna Cheddar sandwich on subsided tomato bread is a standout option, and for good reason. The bread was beautifully toasted and soft on the inside with an amazing flavor. It perfectly complemented the tuna and cheddar filling. If you are interested in making your own sandwich, be sure to try the Cheese Bread. It is a soft, pillowy bread with yummy pieces of cheese. The bread is so good, you can happily make an entire meal out of it. The bakery itself has a contemporary German design and old-world charm. It is clear that Baker Thomas Kohnen takes great pride in what he creates. He insists on making every batch from scratch, using only the finest ingredients. The result is a range of artisan breads dense with whole grains, full of flavor, and with a crisp crust. Kohnen is originally from Bottrop, West Germany where he apprenticed for Franz Bergendahl Bacherrei. His expertise and passion for baking are evident in every bite. Overall, Kohnen's Country Bakery is a wonderful place to visit in Tehachapi. The food is exceptional, and the atmosphere is unbeatable. I stopped by this place for a quick bite and was really impressed! I went with the build-your-own sandwich option, and it was super satisfying. Lots of fresh ingredients to choose from, and they don't skimp on the portions either. Everything tasted fresh and well put together--you can tell they care about quality. Even though the place was pretty busy when I came in, it was very clean. The staff seemed on top of everything, constantly tidying up and moving things along quickly. I didn't have to wait long at all, which was a big plus. The pastry display also caught my eye--so many beautiful options! I didn't try one this time, but they looked absolutely delicious, and I'll definitely be coming back to grab one with my coffee next time. There's not enough words for how good this place is! We broke down in Keene and spent the night at a motel in Tehachapi, and after checkout we decided to explore a little. The service was fantastic! A very sweet lady helped us choose an assortment of pastries and I bought a "Sour Kraut" coffee cup for my angry German Mutter. We sat outside at one of the tables to enjoy our snacks and enjoyed a refreshing glass of ice water from the dispenser. I'm very disappointed however...that they're not closer to my home I'm dying to come back but I live in Mendocino. We will definitely be making a trip back at some point! I also am looking forward to sending my neighbor here--his parents owned a bakery in Germany when he was a child and I think he's going to love it. read more

We love going to this Bakery. Everything is so delicious! We love getting the huge sandwich that feeds the whole family. We can't leave before getting a pastry. My favorite is the eclair, the cream in center is so delicious. I recommend getting the ice tea with lemon it's so refreshing and they give free refills. This place is always busy and some how is always clean and employees are always nice. I was originally introduced to Kohnen's about 4 years ago, it may be longer, we ordered their sandwiches that are to die for. I made the mistake of not faxing in my order one day and walked in. While waiting on my order I saw all their goodies on display and I was done for when I tried their Brownies. A family comes in (about 6 or 7) and she has the same exact attitude. They sit behind us and we can hear them discussing the waitress's attitude. The mom asks her what's up or something and she says "I've been here since 12:30 and I'm tired" Food was decent. Tasted home cooked. Portions were ok. Prices were reasonable. We may come back again when passing through. Someone should teach this young lady how to be courteous, friendly and welcoming. It seems like such a nice, old school place but she was such a turn off for our first time visit.

I stopped in around 5:30 a.m., and it's refreshing to find a place that's not only open that early but also staffed by someone who genuinely enjoys being there. The barista greeted me with a smile, was friendly and welcoming, and made an outstanding Americano. It was incredibly smooth and one of the better Americanos I've had in a long time. I also appreciated that my drink was served in a real ceramic mug for a dine-in order--a small touch that made the experience feel warm and inviting. As someone who likes to get an early start, I was also happy to find plenty of outlets and reliable Wi-Fi, making it an ideal spot to get some work done before the day begins. Great coffee, genuine hospitality, and a cozy atmosphere made for the perfect start to my morning. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town.

The brother in law is a little sweet with some spicy salami and the pastrami pairs so well with the pickles on top. The place fills up fairly quickly but they have indoor seating with a variety of games playing and outdoor seating with fire pits to enjoy that tehachapi weather.
