The decor in this place is kind of random but I also enjoyed it at the same time because there were Christmas trees but also a fake pond in the middle of the restaurant and you feel like you're in a palace. We were able to get parking pretty easily but it was very very crowded so I wish there was more seating area or a system where they can text you when your table is ready. Service was fast. Dim sum was good! I love my sticky rice in lotus leaf, it was great. The colorful dumpling options are pretty but don't necessarily add much to the flavor. I've been coming to Koi Palace ever since I was a kid and wanted to go before the restaurant relocates from the original location to Serramonte in February. Fortunately I had the opportunity to do so for a Wednesday dinner. The restaurant did not look too crowded around 6pm, but people started coming as our dinner progressed. Parking can sometimes be an issue at this location but the parking lot was pretty empty when I arrived. My table of 10 had the $688 special dinner menu. The suckling pig bbq combo platter was their typical appetizer and I enjoyed everything on this dish. The deep fried shrimp paste stuffed crab claws was one of my favorite dishes since I like how everything comes off the claws easily and they were not too oily. The pan seared sirloin beef cubes with cognac flambé was next and I thought there could've been more beef and less mushrooms, but that is my personal preference. Next came the bamboo pith sterculia resin and dried scallop soup. I really enjoyed this soup, not just because it was cold outside, but I liked the slightly chewy texture of the dried scallops. Whole abalone over mustard green and fish maw was next and I liked how this dish only had abalone whereas some other restaurants mix in mushrooms to minimize the minimal amount of abalone. I also liked how the abalone pieces were not too big so everyone who enjoys abalone can keep getting more and those who do not care much for abalone don't feel guilty for wasting any. Peking duck with buns was next and a few of us noticed that the duck on the appetizer had more meat than this dish; the Peking duck had significantly more fat instead of meat. The next dish was a questionable addition to the meal: braised four kinds of vegetables in pumpkin soup. This dish didn't really taste like authentic Chinese food and we jokingly said this dish was included to use leftover pumpkins from Halloween. The texture seemed off in this dish and after seeing how orange it was, I was hoping the pumpkins were mangoes instead. Getting back on track with the Chinese banquet meal, next was steamed sea bass kama with fermented soybean sauce over lotus leaf. I like how they prepare the steamed sea bass at Koi Palace because the meat falls off the bones and the amount of small bones stuck within the meat is very minimal. The last savory dish was stir-fried rice with shrimp and tobiko. I really like how Koi Palace prepares its fried rice dishes and this is no exception; the rice had a good amount of shrimp and wasn't too salty or too clumpy and I did not see any patches of plain white rice so they did a great job preparing this dish. Finally, the dessert consisted of egg custard buns and dessert of the day: hot almond soup. The buns were great with just the right amount of custard in it (some places skimp on the filling) with the right amount of sweetness. The almond soup tasted a bit off and I wished it would've been almond jelly instead. Overall, I was very satisfied with my meal. The service was great and the waiter kept checking on our tea and hot water and offered iced water as well. I am sad to see this location close but hope the new location will have a more modern ambiance and still have the koi fish swimming around the main dining area. read more

This location always seems crowded. We were fortunate to get here early enough to have a minimal wait. We started out with the suckling pig which was delicious. The skin was crisp and tasty, and the meat was tender and flavorful. The rest of the courses, a variety of dumplings and other dim sum usuals (rice rolls, har gow, etc) were also similarly tasty and well prepared. Since there aren't really carts wheeled around that carry the food (you order and they prepare/deliver), the food is fresh and hot, not having sat on a cart. The deep fried taro with pork inside was also very good, but I didn't get a picture of that. Ambiance was typical Chinese restaurant- perfunctory and all business, but that's totally fine. You go there for the food, not the decor. Over the years, this is probably my third odor fourth time at various Koi Palace locations around the Bay Area. My favorite dimsum place. They do jave many location but very consistent in flavor and quality no matter which location you go to. My favorite thing here is actually the coffee ribs. Other than the ribs I tried different things each time we came. I always get An Xi Ti kuan yin or the iron goddess but all of their tea is very good too. Service is ok, sometimes it is hard to get someone attention and it took a sometimes to get our bill. The place is big, the first thing you see when you come in is live fishes you know their seafood are fresh. There is also windows to see the kitchen which is kind of cool. Their Yelp reservation system was a big FAIL. Upon arriving at their restaurant and checking in with the host, was told that my reservation "wasn't confirmed" despite what the app said. Was given their manual paper slip reservation ticket. Yelp and Koi Palace, get your shit together. We came under the assumption that our reservation would be honored. Looking at the reservation details - it said the following: Message from Koi Palace Dear valued patron, thank you for your reservation at Koi Palace Daly City. Due to high volume and the parties before you, your reservation will be for the next available table and may be subject to a short wait at the time of your arrival. All party members must be present to be seated. This system is fucked up. Don't take reservations when it's not going to be honored upon arrival. I feel sorry for their check-in staff having to deal with angry patrons not understanding their reservation wasn't "confirmed." They also have another reservation system called Dinfo which seems to do a better job with telling customers about table availability. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday. I made reservations, but still had to wait about 20 min. I haven't been here in years. I remembered when the was the only Koi Palace location, and you had to come at least 30 min before they open to get a table. The quality was amazing and noticeably different then. The place was busy like a typical dim sum place, but not too noisy that we couldn't talk to each other. We ordered a variety of dim sum. They were all good, but it wasn't the significant notch up that it used to be. Now it just feels like any other dim sum place. My family has been here in the past and I noticed a significant decline in food, quality, and service. We know good Chinese food. The food was very over priced, not worth the money, and not up to standards. We ordered peking duck, vermicelli noodles, fried rice, string beans, and a couple other dishes. The duck was cold, barely any meat just some skin and fat. The noodles were bland, cold, and had no flavor. The dry string beans were normal and tasteless, nothing special. The fried rice was the same, meat was bad quality and tasteless. You would think a 'fancy' and very over priced Chinese restaurant would have better food and service. The ambiance was poor, the service was bad, the restaurant was noisy which was annoying, and had no privacy. We were extremely disappointed after we wasted hundreds of dollars on this place. It had been a while since we last visited Koi Palace, mainly because it's not very close to us and I hate the long queues. But since it was a weekday, we decided to give it a try--I had been craving their egg puffs. We arrived at 11:45 AM on a Friday and were seated almost immediately. The restaurant was packed, operating at nearly full capacity. We ordered six different dishes and were a bit shocked by the pricing. The chicken feet and spare ribs with taro were priced at $15, which seemed steep. However, the dish came with a small chafing dish to keep it warm, and I have to admit, it was probably the best item of the meal--5/5. But was it worth $15? Probably not. The har gow (shrimp dumplings) and sui mai (pork dumplings) were a huge disappointment--both were bland and uninspiring, earning just 1/5. In comparison, The Kitchen at Millbrae does a far superior job. The chive shrimp dumpling, however, was quite good--4/5, on par with The Kitchen. My husband ordered the Crispy Fish Fillet Rice Roll, expecting something interesting. Turns out, it was just frozen fish fingers wrapped in a rice roll--1/5. Now, onto the sugar egg puffs--the main reason I came to Koi Palace. The moment they arrived at our table, they looked off. Instead of being lightly dusted, the sugar was clumped together, a clear sign they had been sitting out for too long. The first one I tried was still warm and tasted okay, but the sugar clumps were distracting, and I had to scrape them off. I would have rated it a 3/5. Then I took a bite of the second one... and was instantly assaulted by a mouthful of oil. Absolutely disgusting. I flagged the waiter, who, without hesitation, apologized and removed it from the bill. His immediate response made me wonder if this was a common complaint. As for my rating? -1000/5. Also, they automatically added an 18% service charge to the bill--even though it was just the two of us. I'm guessing they apply the same 18% across the board, regardless of party size. When the bill arrived, it even gave us an option to tip an additional 5%, 10%, or 15%. Seriously? For dim sum?? With rumors that this Koi Palace location is closing and moving elsewhere, this may very well be our last visit. Based on this experience, I'm not sure I'll miss it. read more

It sucks that you can't reserve on the day of and they do not have a yelp waitlist. Pretty outdated if you ask me. I heard this place will be moving to Serramonte though - so hopefully it'll be more updated and larger. We were a party of 6, but had to split up. However they were accomodating and allowed us to move to a table that was leaving (that could def fit all 6 of us!). They charge for tea here which is new to me.... Food: seabass was okay, pretty oily and didn't expect to have so much bones. Shrimp and beef rice rolls were good. Typical har gow was good too. I tried something new, the xo steamed shrimp dumplings. Fire!! The soup dumplings had a strong ginger flavor but I didn't mind it at all. And lastly, don't get chow fun here. It had been a while since we'd been to Koi Palace, and we had only been to the location in Milpitas before. Imagine my horror when I was waiting for our table, and the fish tanks were completely filled with dead fish and crabs. Since the tanks were right next to the entrance, I could see that at least 80% of the animals were very much not alive. It felt both cruel for the few living animals still in the tanks, and also like a health hazard for diners paying a premium for "fresh" seafood. Interesting choice for management to make during Chinese New Year. Since we were already there and not planning to order fish, we sat down anyways. They lost our order after 15 minutes, and then the food only came 40 minutes after we sat down. The food was very middle of the road. Koi Palace was decent a few years ago, and I hope they will try to improve the quality soon rather than depending on their former reputation. read more

The food was delicious, we ordered some of the basic dishes plus the giant clam that is on their special menu. This restaurant pads the bill and sneaks in an 18% tip without consent -- for a party of two. Two people. Automatic gratuity might make sense for large groups, but quietly adding it for a couple is shady and dishonest, period. What's worse is that this wasn't clearly disclosed upfront and moreover some items were priced higher than the menu price on the bill. You only notice after the bill mysteriously looks higher than expected. That kind of practice destroys trust and ruins the entire dining experience. This location has seriously gone downhill. If you must go, check your bill carefully. Better yet, don't bother. I'll gladly drive to the Milpitas location, where at least I don't feel like I'm being hustled at the table. We were willing to pay the higher prices when compared to other similar offerings, but frequent menu price increases over the last several years has made it not worth the cost anymore. And to add insult to injury, they decided to keep the mandatory 18% service charge that they implemented during COVID-19, and expect us to add separate service tip. I've come here for dim sum several times and loved the experience. The food is fresh and delicious. This is the first place that I ever had an egg custard lava bun. It was definitely life-changing at the time. More recently I came here for a banquet after a nearby funeral. Although it was prime time during the weekend, the restaurant was able to handle an advanced reservation for 60 people. The food was good and the service was even better. read more

It has been many years since I've been to Koi Palace. I saw a notice outside that they will soon be moving to a mall a few blocks away. We came for Friday brunch so the place was not too crowded. We sat right next to the koi pond inside. We had 6 color Xiao Long Bao, Osmanthus Beef Shui Mai, Abalone Minced Chicken Tart, Salt & Pepper Sea Bass, Pork Rib Over Rice Roll, Egg Yolk Lava Bun. The Xiao Long Bao looked fancy as it came out colorful with each in its own spoon. The meat was juicy inside the dumpling, but I cannot taste much distinction in the wraps. The Osmanthus Beef Shui Mai was also mild in flavor. I favorite was the Abalone Tart which reminds me of a savory quiche. The Sea Bass was very crispy and a good portion for sharing. It becomes a little dry after having the 3rd piece of fish. Their menu is interesting and I would return to try other variations. I see that they opened other Koi Palace Express locations in the Bay Area and wouldn't mind trying those other locations if the quality is on par. read more

Reservations at this place are good as non-existent. We made reservations for 11:30am on 06/27. At 11:45am, we were asked to wait another 20 minutes. We noticed walk-ins who came in way after us got tables earlier after giving some $$$ to the person at the check-in desk. The place was crowded and obviously overbooked. Absolutely no customer service at all. My first time there and definitely my last time. We decided to leave and went to our favorite Chinese restaurant in Pacifica were we were welcomed with open arms.
