I was invited to a special banquet lunch here, and everything was DELICIOUS. It was a rainy weekend and the place was packed. Luckily we had reservations and a pre-ordered banquet lunch. Everything was fresh and delicious, and our waters and teas were kept filled. There were too many dishes to name them all, but these were the stand outs: + Fried shrimp and eggplant - ground shrimp ball sits atop a slice of eggplant, is battered and fried then topped with a sweet mayo sauce. Not sure what the name of this dish was but it's sooo good. + 2 steamed fish - not sure what fish this was, but it was the freshest, silkiest fish I've had. + Dried scallop and egg white fried rice - this looks like white rice but there is so much flavor in one bite. + Egg custard dumplings - this is sweet egg custard wrapped in a mochi-like skin. We planned for weeks to go here to celebrate my birthday. We chose this particular restaurant because of their dim sum. Apparently they only offer their dim sum menu during the day. But I'd driven from Bodega so we stayed for dinner. We ordered pea shoots with mushrooms, Chinese broccoli with garlic and ginger, cucumber salad, veggie fried rice, fried tofu. The pea shoots and mushrooms used canned mushrooms. It was okay but fresh mushrooms could have made it so amazing. The veggie fried rice had frozen peas and carrots which is a big turn off for most folks expecting authentic Chinese fried rice. It was disappointing but I'd like to try again someday during the day to experience dim sum like we were expecting. The staff were nice and we really appreciated them. read more

I especially enjoyed the bean curd rolls, but the special fried rice with octopus and shrimp was also very flavorful and delicious. No push carts here but the food came out quickly after ordering. Been coming here since it first opened in 1996 when they opened at 9am! But not as much in the last decade--changed owners and they have expanded so you know how that goes. It is much easier to come at opening time if you're able to wake up "early." They don't even mind if your entire party isn't present to seat. After that, the lobby gets packed and becomes a fire hazard, seriously. Nonetheless, MUST GET: shrimp rice roll and har gow. I know all shrimp but they have the best shrimp. The shrimp size falls between medium and large so 21/25 to 16/20, they are plump, fresh, and not overcooked at all. The rice roll is frickin perfect--not squishy, not slimy, not overcooked, and perfect amount of water and flour ratio. The pieces are smooth and don't stick together. Chicken feet is flavorful and delicious. Now if you're anything like me, I like to save the sauce (okok oil) from the chicken feet dim sum and dip my rice roll or har gow skin in it :) you're welcome. read more

The party had a number of tables... it appears after the soup dish, all the other dishes came out at different times for the tables. Meaning some tables received the duck dish first while other got the lobster and some got the chicken. Really disorganized. So our lobster was under cook. The claws were partially raw. My group of 7 came around 12:30pm on a weekday and had to wait. It was raining that day but the restaurant was still very full. The food was a little pricy: $300 after the 18% service charge for 7 people. We had very little leftovers after. Service is very much lacking and leaves much to be desired. We were a party of 6. They gave us one menu for the entire table. No servers came around so I got up and asked the maitre de for a couple more so ea couple could share and she said she could give me one more because she needed to have one at her station. We ordered 6 dishes, 2 appetizers and 4 other dishes including rice. Three of the main dishes came out and rice followed. I asked for our appetizers and 45 minutes after the meal started one appetizer came out. At the 90 minute mark, we again asked about the second appetizer and was told after the waiter returned that it would be a bit more of a wait. How long? He didn't know but mentioned many other tables were waiting as well. He came out 5 mins later with our appetizer---all cold dishes, no cooking required. Just plating. Koi Palace has always been a solid restaurant for family style when it comes to dim sum, lunch and dinner. I've been coming here for years, and the food has been consistently decent. There's always a line to be seated for dine-in and is always cheerful and lively inside. I've been ordering takeaway from here on lazy days and their Dried Scallop & Egg White Fried Rice, Creamy Corn Fish Maw Soup and Honey Walnut Prawns are all stable choices. This will be a 3.5* review because of our recent visit mid December 2023. Verbal agreement over the phone and stopping by to put a deposit down for the Roasted Suckling Piglet, we were quoted $299; however, few days later receiving the receipt after dinner was $329. This was mentioned to the staff and their response was "Price was increased recently". I feel like after a phone and deposit confirmation the firm price should have been honored or mentioned prior.. we're down to pay $300 for this dish so it's not about nickels and dime but the principle. Writing this review as of 1/10/2024 their website still says $299, so their menu should be promptly updated to avoid further confusion. Dining here is not cheap, just hoping for better communication. We had an exceptional meal this last visit. I don't know why I would have this experience. We have been patrons for many years and we return because the food is very good. I was starving and I totally forgot to take pictures of the dim sum. It has been a hot minute since I came to koi palace and it actually is better than the previous times I've been here. Pre Covid, I thought this place was overpriced mediocre tasting food but I think their value and food has improved! I always get the same dishes whenever I go, and every once in a while I'll try out something new. Koi palace can definitely hold its weight against some of the other places but it's got some work to do! I loved their lo mai gai but I think their spare ribs might need a little work. The service was quick and all the staff were very nice. They kept coming back to refill the tea and remove finished dishes, which I appreciated very much. Quality of the food does not match the bill. We went here for a special event and the result was an overpriced bill with mediocre quality served food. We ordered spare ribs from the menu ($28), it turns out that all they did was place it in a deep frier for 10 seconds and then dumped some spices on it. The flavor and texture profile was bad. Another plate arrived on our table and it was a classic beef chow fun ($24). The noodles lacked flavor and it actually tasted overcooked because you can taste the metallic wok. We realized that you could get better chow fun noodles from a cheap take out that was not a fine dining restaurant. Plate after plate arrived and it was all underwhelming. The lack of attention to detail, the hastily put together plates and no server checking on the quality warrants this negative review. Our bill was over $230 but it felt like paying for bad take out food for $50. You could get higher quality food for half that price at Ichi Ramen nearby. read more

Koi Palace is still my go to dim sum spot in SF / Peninsula area. We came as a party of 5 as an impromptu decision on a weekend afternoon, which low key was a mistake to not make a reservation ahead of time. Having been here a number of times, I always either make a reservation or arrive right before opening as there is always a line and this is exactly what we ran into upon on arrival. We were able to check in adult upon arrival but this led into a one hour wait before we were seated (again, our fault for not planning better). Once we were seated though, we were able to order promontory with food coming out in continuous waves. The reason I like Koi Palace is because they consistently provide the same quality and service so I know what to expect when I visit. The dim sum always hits home. Occasionally, in the past there have been a few inconsistencies, but for the most part, it's always understandable, and considering how many people come through on a given day for afternoons dim sun, I think it's actually quite impressive. One thing to know is that service can be impersonal but that's part of just how everything flows. You order by choosing on a menu what you want and filling out the quantity. There are also carts that go around the dining space offering specials that you can order from. Just be mindful s it can be very easy to over order, which is exactly what we did lol but you can request boxes to take food home. read more

I've been here plenty of times because of the consistency of the food here. Their seafood options are abundant and the weekends are usually packed for dim sum. I came here on a weekday for dim sum and was seated immediately for two people. They have their own parking lot and street parking. I got common items from their dim sum selection and they did not disappoint. Definitely don't shy away from their specials! Some of my favorite highlights that are a must order on your next dine in: - Crab fried sticky rice (freaking amazing the abundance of ingredients like Chinese sausage, full-size king crab and egg dish was immaculate. Not to mention the chefs cutlery work on fine chopping! - fried crispy taro balls, with pork - Roast duck - all things egg custard (steam bun, pineapple bun... baked bun. It's a must!) - stick to the original original dim sum dishes, you eat and order here, I promise it's solid! Unfortunately, unfortunately, they ran out of roast pork by the time we got there, since it's the last hour of lunch around 2 PM I wasn't too surprised because it's one of the best things on the menu . Amazing time and chat here . they let us stay past 3 PM and eat and enjoy ourselves. such a good time for friends who have an experienced dim sum before, this definitely blew them away. We arrived at 10:30am to avoid the usual lineup, which we were glad we did, when we walked out, the line was building up. The decor was ok, it's looking a little old, but everything is still decently clean. We hope to come back soon for another early dim sum. This place has gone downhill. Not only is the service non-existent, but the quality of food has taken a nose dive. I really like chive pancakes. This was the first chive pancake I couldn't eat. Thick dough with hardly any chives. Zero stars. The Shanghai Dumplings were average, but they forgot our order twice and took them an hour and a half to bring it to our table. Their noodle rolls were not fresh and downright cold. Refills on tea are impossible, and so is getting to go boxes. They don't clear out old dishes which is a pain because the tables are so small, amd the dishes just pile up. They don't seem to care, and every food item we received tasted like something you could get for 30% less somewhere else. Also, the parking here is awful and so is the wait for a table. It's been YEARS since I've been to Koi Palace so when the opportunity presented itself, I just had to go. My friend and I went and he never had dimsum before....boy did I just ruin it for him lol. Wegot there on a weekday a little before it opened and just as expected, there was a line lol. The dimsum was soo fresh and delicious! They use the biggest freshest shrimp, and you can taste and see the difference between their seafood and other places. I decided to try the fried pork belly here, and it was soo crunchy and juicy. I'm honestly lucky I got these 2 pictures bc nothing on our table lasted long enough for my phone to capture. We chose a set menu which included a roasted duck and pork BBQ platter (pictured), salted battered crab with pumpkin, scallop soup, abalone over greens, Peking duck, shrimp rolls, beef and scallops, scallop fried rice, and steamed fish. The menu seems ordinary, but the presentation and flavors were above the typical fare. The texture, flavor, and craftsmanship is above average. There are plenty of service staff and they are very attentive. The room feels like being in the center courtyard of a royal palace or villa. On Sunday evenings, the waiters are super rushed, so you don't get much time to place your order or get their attention. But they were really on top of clearing plates. A lot of food items were out as well at 7pm. On Monday evenings at the same time, place is way less packed and waiters definitely do take their time with you, but our plates weren't cleared as often. An oriental style restaurant. You'll be hosted to their dining room where it is nicely decorated. The tables are closely packed, so it can be a bit cosy. Food was well-prepared and served for the table. A crispy roasted pig and pretty good wok-dishes.
