I've been stopping here now and then for lunch for the past several years. Thought it was time to update my original review. The place is still great. The owner is a (I think) a Japanese fellow and I believe everyone who works here is family. There's often a young girl at the counter who I suppose is his grand daughter. She is very sweet and very bubbly. You walk in and get a big smile and an enthusiastic hello. I only go now an then but she treats me like I am a regular she sees every day. I go up to the counter and she knows what I order... always chicken teriyaki. I don't have to say a thing. She rings me up and a few minutes later I have a hot, tasty meal in front of me. There are a few "rice bowl" type businesses in Cedar Mill and they are all good. But Kokos is the best! I'd encourage my fellow Yelpers to check them out if they haven't already. The prices are very fair especially for what you get. A filling, tasty, healthy meal. I don't know if they do this for everyone but the owner is always there and sometimes works the counter. He gives me the veterans discount which knocks a little off the usual, already low price. Plus I get double the meat so now it's a very inexpensive lunch in a container that is just packed with food. Hence the reason for this review refresh. I don't think they make much of a profit and being in the mall I'm sure their overhead is high. The folks there work very hard and likely don't get paid much. Dunno if they are native Americans or immigrants but they are living the American dream. I'm sure one day all that hard work will pay off and they will be very successful. But given how nice they are to me I'm sure they lose money every time I show up for lunch. So I very much appreciate their kindness and generosity. They don't make much money but they generate a lot of goodwill.... wanted to pay it forward in some small way by posting this glowing and well deserved five star review. I hope Kokos will be here for a long time. It's one of the few restaurants I can still afford to patronize. A nice meal that someone else cooks for me has become a rare treat in my life. Staff: the owner was super friendly, kind, and welcoming to both new and usual customers. Food: I ordered the chicken lunch special for $8.95. It came with a fountain drink, too to my surprise. It was around 11:30 and there were maybe 5 people waiting for there food to go. I ordered the Spicy yakisoba chicken. It came out pretty quick. For the price point and quality I loved it. I came with some veggies. Do wish the loaded them up a little more. The noodles were good. The chicken was moist and had good flavor. I will be back for sure. I guess the only other thing I would say is since I love condiments for my teiyaki I wish they had more options other than teriyaki sauce and sriracha. Came here after going to the Columbia sportswear employee store which was less than a 5 minute drive. Super convenient location in a strip mall near Beaverton. The main menu had pictures of each item which was very helpful. Off to the left was another menu with three lunch specials. Lunch went until 2pm so I decided to get the chicken teriyaki lunch special for $8.95. That was a really good deal for the amount of food they give. I still had leftovers but my boyfriend comfortably finished his meal and was satisfied. I thought the teriyaki sauce was a tad too sweet and I wasn't a huge fan of the unseasoned veggies. I am one of those people who grew up eating teriyaki proteins at home, because my Caucasian but Asian food obsessed parents had both lived in Hawaii before moving to San Francisco. My folks were always marinating meat in soy sauce, ginger, and garlic and throwing it on a hibachi or the big grill. Even our annual Thanksgiving turkey got the teriyaki treatment and was cooked on a spit stuffed with beans sprouts, mushrooms, etc. So, a new teriyaki place opens close to us and we got an endorphin burst. Have I mentioned the teen's teriyaki salmon fixation? Anyway, I know I know... get to the point, Janet. Friendly nice people. I called it in, everything went smoothly. Good prices. Lunch specials. They offered us free small sodas ( we aren't doing soda much but that was a kind offer). Crispy outside and tender inside salmon. Good rice, perfectly cooked. Yummy teriyaki sauce, not too sweet, and reportedly good hot sauce. The only not awesome thing was the veggies- a huge pile of almost raw unseasoned cabbage with a couple slightly more cooked broccoli florets and a sliver of rawish carrot. I think we would prefer it totally cooked down and caramelized or completely raw like a slaw. Or a salad would be ok. Or some kind of seasoning might help. Despite the veggies the rest was lovely and we are definitely going back because there are potstickers! and tofu! and shrimp! All very cool! We are very happy to have Koko near us. read more

They gave us extra potstickers and overall were lovely to deal with. The mediocre next - the food was okay. Not bad, but not amazing. I stopped by for a quick dinner with some friends recently, after having had a pint next door at the Cascadia taphouse. It was fine, but honestly I was a bit disappointed relative to the many other teriyaki places out on the east side (Joy Teriyaki is my go-to, which compares favorably). Prices seemed high, although I think that may just be inflation. But I'd be curious how their prices stack up relative to peers. I think the entrees were about $16, which just seemed a bit high for takeout. I had the Salmon Teriyaki. The salmon itself was fine, though the flavor was a bit lacking. They serve it with teriyaki sauce on the side -- of course dousing some protein and rice with sugar will make anything taste fine, although it just didn't have that savory flavor that you get at some other teriyaki places. I also just wasn't impressed with the interior. The lighting was insufficient, and everything just seemed bathed in a bit of grey subtle tones. And the seating was organized inefficiently, with several rows of seats accommodating maybe 8 (who brings 8 people into a place like this? they should break it out into smaller tables with 4). I saw that there is a Japanese restaurant, and also a Vietnamese+Thai restaurant, in the same strip mall. I might be tempted to try either of those next time to see if they compare favorably. read more

I tried the Chicken & beef teriyaki ($14) and Chicken & Shrimp Teriyaki ($15). The meat was delicious, especially the beef but the brown rice was super hard and the veggies undercooked.
