I am updating and upgrading a previous review to 5 stars. This is largely due to the efforts of the manager, Scott. He is outstanding. And the location on the Koko Marina is terrific with beautiful views. We realized that on the previous visit we had had unusually slow service. Well, it is Covid-- restaurants, hotels and retail stores are super short staffed. We had a new server who didn't know how to handle things quite yet. This time we had a very professional server and prompt service. We also missed out on our previous visit on some of the tastiest food here! We always love the fish tacos, which are adorned with black beans, corn and a delicious sauce. This time we also got the pizza rolls, which are famous amongst the locals. Soooo good. And the kids were very happy with their Keiki pasta and chicken tenders. Still flummoxed at the lack of fries, we asked our server: Why?? She explained that the founders of Kona Brewing used to own Kettle Chips so they wanted to serve potato chips. Given that Kettle later was sold off, and this is no longer a motivating factor, I suggest to Scott and the owners: Bring on the fries! Please?! But until then, we declare ourselves fans and we will definitely be back. read more

Kona Brewing Co. is my favorite brewery that I've been to! Although I'm not a beer drinker and have only been to a few breweries, I love coming to Kona Brewing Co. for multiple reasons. The food and drinks are great, service is always friendly, and the view is spectacular. My friends and I came here on a Friday night. Surprisingly, they weren't busy and we were seated immediately. I've come in the past for food and drinks but tonight I just grabbed a couple of drinks with friends. I had the Passionfruit Guava Orange and Strawberry Guava Seltzer's. It was my first time trying their seltzer's and I really enjoyed them! I'm also a fan of their cocktails and food. I recommend seltzer's for those who aren't a big fan of beer but want a light and fruity drink. Kona Brewing Co. has options for everyone! They have a wide range of drink options. As well as food, from appetizers to entrées. Service is friendly and prompt for the most part. It's a staple and must for both locals and tourists and I'm lucky to live so close to it! read more

I'm going to bump up Kona Brewing one more star because I tried another beer of theirs that I liked quite a bit more. I got the Hanalei Island IPA and was impressed quite a bit more compared to their Longboard Lager. This IPA was very fruity and light. It's more like a Session IPA where you can relax and have several without getting too loopy which is a nice change of pace. I do occasionally like session beers and this one is I nice one to have. read more

I've been drinking Kona Brewing beers since like forever and it was a dream of mine to check out one of their breweries... Well since we are in Hawaii, why not. Me and the misses for a late late late honeymoon checked out Kona Brewing and we enjoyed every minute. The staff is friendly and I formative if you have questions to ask. The beers were delicious and the pizza.... OMG if you have the chance to stop here, make sure you order The Captain, you won't regret it. This confirms my own rule that I just decided to break: never order meat or burger at a place by the water... but sea food. First time I visited I had a fish dish which was great - great recepy, great execution, including the presentation. Now- my second time... I went for the burger (I know, breaking the rule). I am not the guy that sends the food back to the kitchen but getting a "hard to cut well done burger" after ordering a medium-rare... Well... it had to be sent back. I could be ok with a medium. I swear! So I sent the first one back then waited 20 (twenty) more minutes... Then I started to debate for myself: "should I finish my beer and leave?" but I never sat in a brewery and not getting a decent burger, so I decided to try again. Second time I asked respectfully and clearly for my order to be a medium-rare burger. Twenty more minutes of waiting in front of my beer and shockin' surprise: got a medium well. But this time I Had to keep it. And had to accept the fate: they beat me. I was too hungry after my beer and a long day at a trail... Sorry, but the kitchen can't cook. They can't make a decent burger. Or... the kitchen doesn't give a crab, man!!! Sad! The recepies are great, they are really flavorful, but too bad - the execution sucks. Other than this, the bar team is cool, they help each other as a real team. But who cares? The kitchen really needs one of the likes of Chef Ramsay really bad. Unless they advertise themselves as a fish only place. I am sure this review won't hurt anybody. Tourists will flock here forever. For the beer. And maybe for the view. And yes, the beer is great. On the first full day at Oahu, after some early sightseeing- We stopped by the Koko Marina Center and choose the Kona brewing for a quick lunch. The place had the best views right next the water, the breeze came in and it was a nice ambiance to be on vacation mode. Since the GF and dairy options were limited- I ordered one of the salads with grilled chicken to be added. Considering tourists are the main target I get it why a salad is at that higher price range. Overall it was tasty, good portion, descent service and something nutritious to continue with our action planned afternoon with a nice view. read more

I'm not exactly sure what would lure you here over other restaurants, pubs, or local breweries. However, here are some things to factor into your decision. Pros: - There's a nice outdoor shaded seating area on the water. Marina and Mountain View, good breeze. - The burgers are good. They're $16, so you'd hope you want to eat it, but they do deliver as promised. Cons: - Music is pretty heavy and loud. Maybe ok at 9pm with a few drinks in you but Offspring and Nirvana on top volume are a bit much for me at lunch. - They don't serve fries, their pickles are awful, their chips do not have pepper (despite what menu says), and their seltzer's are all spiked (just as an FYI because they're not listed as such) - Cocktails are disappointing. I'm ok with a $12 cocktail, it's Hawaii, but know that these ones are all made from mixes and frankly that's too much for something totally artificial. Honestly, it wasn't awful, but it's not cheap either ($20 for 3 tacos?) and given the many many better offerings at a similar price point, I can't say I'll be back. read more

Used to be great but variety has deteriorated severely over the years. 3 to 4 years ago they had a multi page menu with lots of excellent options and quality. Numerous appetizers and a lot of yummy main courses. Right after covid the menu was sliced in half with 70% of the appetizers removed. At that time I was told the chef felt he was too busy and didn't want to run an extensive appetizer list. (They are a pub and grill.Huh?? Appetizers are key to a pub and grill). A year ago they cut the menu in half again removing many of the main courses, another employee telling me they had less staff and didn't have time to make all the options. Last week they removed the rest of the appetizers and cut the main courses again. Now what was once a 5 page food menu with delicious variety is down to one page with very limited options. Apparently the owner of the marina decided not to maintain anything here anymore as well. All the roofs at the marina are falling apart and all the businesses are leaving because it's too difficult to find staff and the properties are not properly maintained. Apparently its his plan to let the whole thing go for tax writeoff. As a resident of hawaii kai this is all very disappointing and I find it shameful. If you don't want to keep it up then just sell it to somebody who does rather than hurting the whole community. read more

I was craving a beer and good food after a day at the beach. My friends and I decided to swing by Kona on the way home and that turned out to be a great idea. I've been here a couple times before and loved it. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful, he recommended the fish tacos because he loved them so much and now I understand why. The side salad was great and the tacos were huge. 3 was plenty to fill me up! The burger was also a good size and tasted great. We all cleaned our plates. We got a table right next to the window with a view of the marina and a nice breeze. It was really a perfect lunch. If you like merchandise, they had some really good stuff right at the front and I was tempted to get some myself. On Tuesday's if you wear their merch they do a deal. Highly recommend! read more

Just made last call for the kitchen, got handed a bag with part of our order to go. Then our actual order showed up ready to eat so the bag got delivered to its proper location at another table. Last call for the bar at 9:30, but drinks still being made for the staff only, I was offered a water, up until we left at 9:55. Seemed like a college run place with little care beyond when they close and what they needed to eat and drink before leaving. Great place! Definitely crowded at lunchtime on the weekend. The wait was said to be 45mins but we got seated in 25. They had a pretty good selection of beers and a large menu. The burgers and fish sandwich of the day (Marlin) were phenomenal! For whatever reason I chose their vegetable pasta. Meh. Not many veggies in it and I should've opted for the fish (when in Rome). I was just needing veggies. Service was good, food was hot and environment was nice with a bay breeze. They even have canned beer to go (most different from what is on tap), and a little store with growlers, hats, shirts, etc. I think it's worth a stop, but don't get the veggie pasta. The stars are more reflective of the location and views that you get with this place. The patio seating is on the beautiful water. The beers and cocktails were tasty. Food was overpriced for the flavor, but I will say you get a lot of food for your money. The tacos were massive, as well as the salads! Service was efficient and we had friendly servers. What a brewery!!!! I love this place! I was apprehensive because I'm truly not a brewing co. person. When I think about it, I think bar food. This was true quality - delicious tasting food that had the best freshest ingredients! Everything was perfect. The food, the atmosphere, the service, the view, the company. We came for happy hour today and got seated immediately around 5pm (MIRACLES EXIST)!! Our server Tina got us ice cold waters within minutes, followed quickly by our order for cold Longboard Lagers. You don't know how badly I want to be there. Really! It's been almost a year since my last visit and actually five years since my first and only visit here. My friend recently dropped into my bubble, well actually met me on my driveway, and delivered some beverages to me. I was surprised to learn the supplier of these zero calorie non alcohol drinks. My friend knows my affection for fruity drinks so, when I saw mango, pineapple, and guava, I was sold. The drinks were okay with the mango hibiscus one being my favorite. My only disappointment was that the spice or herb ingredient dominated the fruit flavors though it made me feel guilt free being zero calories. We initially came for water sports at the center right next to this place. Destiny: 5 minutes to 2PM we were done and saw a long line outside this place. We knew we had to try it! Ugh. I really wish I could give this place a better review as I was really looking forward to it! The view is great (but there aren't many bad views in HI...) Our group of 5 ordered a few beers, a mai tai, pizza, ahi salad, burgers, etc. They brought 3/5 meals out. 15 mins later they brought another meal out...and another 15 mins later they finally brought the last meal out! By the time the last meal was brought out, the rest of our group had finished eating about 30 mins prior. The service was lacking and that food timing for the worst I have experienced in a very VERY long time. The restaurant was not overly busy and there were vacant tables so I'm not really sure where the shortfall came from. Good spot for food and drinks by the water. My friends and I came on a Friday night just before the sunset (so we had a great view of the sun setting during our time here) and were seated on the patio outside. Our waitress was really nice and you can tell they were starting to get busy. There's also a parking lot in front since it's located in a plaza, which is always convenient. The food is more of the typical American food such as wings, burgers, pizza, and more but they had a unique twist. We got a large Kohala pie which was a white pie with spinach, sausage, red peppers, garlic and macadamia nuts. The pizza was actually really tasty, especially with the macadamia nuts that added a different texture! I'm not big on beer so I got the Hawaii Kai Mai Tai which tasted watered down and wasn't that great. I couldn't taste all the fruits that it supposedly had in it. Kona Brewing Co. is definitely a nice spot to chill at with good company. There's plenty of options for both food and drinks. Visited on a recent trip to Hawaii. I grabbed a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. You can get a half or a large salad, I opted for a large upon the servers recommendation. The large had A LOT of lettuce but didn't quite balance out with the amount of chicken I had. I came to Kona Brewing Co on a Friday afternoon during my last trip to Hawaii. It was about a 10 minute wait for a seat at the bar for a group of three, it was super packed inside. I ordered the Bacon and Bleu Burger with Chips and a Mac Salad to split. The portions here are huge, I am really glad I decided to split my meal! The burger was really juicy and flavorful and the bacon strips were HUGE. I liked the Mac Salad, it was creamy... not soupy with too much liquid like some mac salads! The burger tasted better with the Mac Salad than the chips, chips were decent... but a little too oily for me. The staff were friendly, food came out quickly and we were checked on throughout our meal. Kona Brewing Co. is bit of a landmark in its own right so definitely worth stopping by if anything for the brews and the gift shop. A definite must for tourists. Quite honestly this would have been a 3-star review but bumping up +1 star because of that (and the service). On my recent trip back home to visit my parents who live in the area/Hawaii Kai, I convinced them to stop by here for lunch on my way back to the airport. It was a Wednesday afternoon, and we waited for about 20min to get seated, as it's first-come, first serve. This was for 'any seat available' so we were ready for the bar even...but the patio opened up for us (which was awesome, to be right by the water). Once in, I have to say the meal was pleasant in terms of solid service (from the coed host crew to our server), despite how busy it gets there. I love their beer flight which allows you to choose 4 of any of their selections. I opted for mostly seasonal and was not disappointed. The food however, let's be honest, is eh. It's mediocre bar food, which I had anticipated looking at the menu (not the best selections). We got "The Captain" pizza, basically their version of a combo pizza, which filled us up but I felt tasted a little 'kids-pizza'-ish...you know, cafeteria/buffet pizza. Which isn't terrible, just depends on your mood. Take a look at all the pics- basically it tastes like it looks. The sliders came on taro buns which was a cool twist, but they were really thick and dried out easily, be it because of the wind or that's just how they come. Again, not terrible, but definitely not great. But, glad we stopped by, and I'd definitely stop by for beers next time after a trip to Sandy's, hike, or whenever I'm in the area again. read more

You know this was arguably the biggest surprise of our trip. We were tired, didn't know what to eat, a tour guide from Kualoa Ranch recommended this place. We got a 10" Hawaii Kai Pie (kalua pork and pineapple) and half a chicken Caesar salad, both for me and my wife. We were not expecting much since it was a brewery but wow. The chicken was grilled and hot and we agreed it was probably the best chicken Caesar salad we've had in our lives. The pizza was surpisingly solid and did its job. I'm glad I tried the pork instead of something you can get on the mainland like chicken BBQ. Ironically we were told by our guide to come here because they have good pizookies but they do not actually them. We were ultimately too full for dessert. Haha but we thoroughly enjoyed everything else! My wife and I don't drink so can't comment on that. Server was very kind and informative, especially because we came a little late (after 8pm). My friend wanted to have lunch together and decided on this restaurant. I had been here pre-COVID and it was much busier. Although we came for lunch and had a reservation for this visit, the number of people was much smaller, and the social distancing much greater. The menu was viewed using a QR code at the table with personal phone. They have two QR codes which confused us at first- one for beer, and another for food and cocktails. There was plenty of free parking in this shopping plaza on this day, even with a small car show going on and a group of motorcyclists hanging out. We were seated immediately near the water with a nice view of the marina and the tv's at the bar showing NFL games. We each ordered a small pizza. I ordered the pepperoni and sausage pizza ($15.75) and thought it was ok but not worth the price. It seemed bready, insufficient sauce which made it a little dry, and the sausage was crumb-like. We each ate all but a couple pieces of our pizza which we said we would have for our lunch the next day. I debated the porter beer or a pina colada, and went with the beer given conversation with the server indicating it couldn't be found elsewhere. A strange debate when you think about being at a brewery. The beer was the right choice of course as I like a good dark beer. Great service overall. Multiple people were attentive to our needs and food/drink was timely/accurate. A must try, and customers should appreciate their effort for safety of all in these times of COVID. read more

I won a gift card from an Instagram contest and thought that it would be a great way to celebrate a friend's birthday and check out Kona Brewing Company at the same time! My friend lives in Hawaii Kai and I heard that he likes Kona Brewing Company. I had never been there before. The manager and I were messaging each other through Instagram where I was directed to OpenTable.com to make a reservation... because this place is popular! I was able to indicate that we were celebrating a birthday and that we preferred a seat to view the sunset over the marina... Nice! We parked for free at Koko Marina Shopping Center and walked right in. The friendly hostess showed us to our table in the far corner where the cool breeze entered the restaurant... Ahhh! The birthday boy pointed out the almost full moon - wow - what a view! We missed the sunset as our reservation was for 6:30pm and the sun had set earlier than expected on 10-29-20. The open air venue was a bit noisy as music was playing loudly. The three of us had to raise our voices to each other. That's ok...our mouths were full of yummy food soon after... Our waiter was energetic with positive vibes. He got our drinks quickly and labeled the beers of the flight on a coaster: Hanalei, Castaway, Wailua Wheat, and Black Sand. They were out of the Hawaii exclusive coconut beer, so, I guess I need to return for it! The food was better than we expected. The Pizza of the Week - chicken bacon ranch - was fantastic! The crust was on the crisp light side. The toppings were delicious! The veggie pasta had a great flavor and the noodles were nice and chewy! The fish tacos were yummy and a bit spicy! We came here after a morning of hiking diamond head, and man this place hit the spot! We came right as it opened at 11:00, and glad we did because the line was out the door when we left, about 12:45. So first of all, the beer is amazing. My husband got a flight and I got 3 different pints, all of which were great. The pepperoni rolls were top notch and the fish tacos were probably the best we've had on the island. Super fresh and huge!
