The wait between getting seated and ordering was surprisingly long, as I had decided what to order when I was waiting to get seated. However, the wait time between ordering and getting the food was standard. Not sure why I started on the wait time, but it was something to note here because it is busy. And it is busy for a reason! It's a fun alternative to your standard "American" diner. I much prefer the menu here! I was a huge fan of the loco moco and loved that you could customize it. It went with the classic hamburger patty over fried rice, as it just hits the spot for me. I really enjoyed it overall but I did find it a bit dry for my liking. I wonder if I could have asked for it to be less cooked through. I'm also curious to try other meats with my loco moco instead. I found the other dishes I tried to be alright. The spam musubi fell a bit flat for me. I'm used to the rice being more seasoned and having some flavor itself (though I can't say I know what is traditional). I felt the rice in the musubi was very plain and left me hunting for more flavor overall. I also sampled some of the lunch combo plate. I was a fan of the mac salad, but I found the meats we chose were a bit too dry/not noteworthy. They also have cakes of paradise slices. Maaaan we tore this food UP!! The saimin and musubi were great starters. For those not familiar with saimin it's like the Hawaiian version of ramen. You can get it anywhere pretty much in Hawaii even at McDonald's and 7-11. I loved the saimin the only thing I wish was switched out was the egg for the fish cake. It was so good though that we ordered a second bowl. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see the spam in the musubi fried crispy. So many places leave the spam looking undercooked and floppy- gross! Having the spam nice and crispy made this musubi so much better. Now onto the entrees. We had the Tonkatsu (pork katsu) and teriyaki beef combo plate and the beef stew plate. The Tonkatsu was ok I would've preferred chicken katsu but they don't allow substitutions. The Teri beef though was so damn good. Next time I'm going to order just a Teri beef plate. The Teriyaki flavor was so rich and flavorful. Their Mac salad is also good. Much better than L&L Mac salad. The beef stew was incredible. Talk about comfort food, it hit the spot! I was told that if I wanted to order something else I would have to pay the $8 delivery fee again, which I felt like I shouldn't have to pay since it was not my fault that the restaurant was out of what we ordered and they did not update their online ordering system. Da Kanak Attack is an awesome lunch special that comes with all kinds of meat, the usual mac salad and white rice, AND two little egg rolls with sauce. This dish will most likely leave you with enough leftovers for another snack or meal. I've also had the Mochiko chicken entree, and Kalua pig and cabbage entree. These both come with rice and mac salad as well. I don't know WHAT is in the mochiko chicken, but its flavors are worth coming back for to get again and again. Maybe it'd be nice to have some kind of sauce to dip it in though. The Kalua pig was fantastic. It was nicely salty & a bit smoky like you would expect from bbq pork. The only downside is it was served in a container mixed with cabbage that had TONS of liquid in it... which is not bad but I'd prefer more meat and less liquid. Both of these entrees were very good, I just wish the portions were a little bigger... I do eat a lot though. They do a great job of making sure everything is securely closed and that you have napkins and utensils in your to-go bag. I've been to other restaurants where they just don't care to provide those things and it makes me sad because I usually eat in the car after ordering and it would be nice to have utensils. I usually try to go somewhere twice before reviewing, but Kona was so good on my first try I had to write something up. I have never been to Hawaii, but with several people saying it was authentic food I had to give it a try. I figured being that restaurants are struggling through the pandemic, might as well try a few things while supporting a small business. The mimosa set comes with two small bottles and your choice of hawaiian juice (all chilled when you pick it up), and at $12.50 I think it's a great deal! The meal combo was huge enough to only eat half and be full, plus it was delicious, even the white rice was properly cooked. I ordered the cake on a whim, since I don't always trust random cakes, but the rainbow one looked like fun and honestly the tropical flavors were excellent (plus it's a humongous slice). The food came out hot and super quick. The spam musubi was made to order! The spam was nice and hot and had the right amount of crisp to it. The seaweed/nori was still crisp and still had that snap when you bite into the spam musubi (great sign to know if the musubi was made fresh)! The saimin tasted like home however the one thing to note was that noodles were missing the bounce and chew usually found in saimin. But the flavors were there! The mochiko chicken was yummy and no complaints there! We subbed 1 scoop of rice and got 2 scoops of mac salad instead of the usual 1 scoop. The mac salad was good but I do prefer the heavier and creamier type of mac salad. Their mac salad definitely had some bright and refreshing notes to it.
