This place is definitely reminiscent of local places back at home in Hawaii. The service was great and our server was so on it! We got the spam musubi, mochiko chicken, and saimin! The food came out hot and super quick. The spam musubi was made to order! The spam was nice and hot and had the right amount of crisp to it. The seaweed/nori was still crisp and still had that snap when you bite into the spam musubi (great sign to know if the musubi was made fresh)! The saimin tasted like home however the one thing to note was that noodles were missing the bounce and chew usually found in saimin. But the flavors were there! The mochiko chicken was yummy and no complaints there! We subbed 1 scoop of rice and got 2 scoops of mac salad instead of the usual 1 scoop. The mac salad was good but I do prefer the heavier and creamier type of mac salad. Their mac salad definitely had some bright and refreshing notes to it. When craving a Friday lunch comfort meal, kona kitchen is the place we go! The portions are insanely good as we got two entrees for about $31 before tip. Seattle has gotten crazy with food prices so this is easily a great deal. Mochiko chicken was super crispy and sweet. We did a to-go order and were able to make some sauces to pair the chicken with. This is hard to find in seattle and easily one of my favorite things. My friend got the Waimea plate and though the entire thing was a little heavy... we still loved it. We were excited to find a restaurant nearby that serves local Hawaii food. They have a small parking area and ample street parking. We've tried other places that advertise Hawaii or Hawaiian in their name or items on their menu. This was the first time where it actually tasted like local Hawaii food. Our server was great. Coming from Hawaii, I love trying out other states' version of Hawaii's staples. I'm going to make it my quest to try all the different Hawaiian spots here in Washington! My friend, David L, highly recommended this place as one of his favorite Hawaiian restaurant. I definitely had to see it for myself! First spot for Hawaiian food in Washington! The location that my group and I went to was the one located in Seattle on 5th Ave NE located across of Chevron gas station. There's a small parking lot with narrow stalls. My group and I came an hour and half before closing so we all easily found parking, but I heard the restaurant can get really crowded! Plan ahead! I got the Kalua Pig & Cabbage plate with two mac salads and one rice (usually comes with two rice and one mac) and a lychee cocktail (can't remember the exact name). The lychee cocktail as I read the description didn't have any sort of lychee in it. It had mango rum, soda water, and something else. And wow! The drink actually tasted like lychee. That's wild LOL i was pleasantly surprised. the drink wasn't too sweet either! My entree portion was huge! The amount of food for the price paid was definitely worth it. Here comes the test: the taste of the food... and it passed! The kalua pig was really good! I'm somewhat a stickler when it comes to kalua pig because I've had really good ones that were smoked which is super difficult to find now even in Hawaii. This one has a light smokiness which surprised me. The flavor I'm used to was there YUM. The mac salad was also super good! It had the seasoning I was used to back in hawaii and wasn't overly mayo'd and gross. My friends got the Da Kanak Attack Combo Plate and Mochiko Chicken. David mentioned that he would also choose mochiko chicken, and I can see why! Really crispy and full of flavor. Da kanak attack is definitely a kanak attack dish. Howdy folks. How are all of my fellow Yelpers doing? This review is going to take us to the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington. I absolutely love Seattle. Such a unique city with so much to offer with everything from breath taking picturesque views, legendary coffee spots, and some amazing restaurants. One of those amazing restaurants is the Kona Kitchen. So without any further delay, let's get right into this bad boy. Or bad girl depending on your preference. Located in the Maple Leaf neighborhood of the city, the Kona Kitchen is a Hawaiian themed restaurant that offers authentic Hawaiian dishes in a family friendly environment. Depending on when you go there, you may have to wait for a table. To me that is a good sign. That means that the locals trust this place. After all, why would people be willing to wait on a table when they can hop and skip over to any number of other local grind spots? As a eager as you may be to get your grind on, trust me. The wait will be worth it. Before I continue I feel that I should make mention of the fact that the Kona Kitchen is owned by the actor Yuji Okumoto. Yes that's right. Mr. Okumoto is most well known for his role as the villain Chozen in the classic movie "The Karate Kid Part II." I just had to throw that fact into this review. However, if you were to ask me, I'd say Yuji Okumoto's best film is "True Believer." Ok back to the Kona Kitchen. One of the things that I really dig about the interior of the restaurant itself is that it is not over pretentious. Some of these mainland Hawaiian themed restaurants are so over decorated that it is sickening. It's like I don't need to see a bunch of fake Hala trees and Hibiscuses to let me know that this is a Hawaiian joint. Some of these places just really over do it. But not here at the Kona Kitchen. It's just a cozy dinning room with a groovy local vibe. To kick things off I recommend going with some Kona Kitchen coffee. Believe me when I say that this place has some really ono coffee. And not just your typical mediocre restaurant coffee that you'll find at Denny's. This is quality freshly brewed Kona coffee. There is nothing better than some fresh coffee after you've just chugged down a few margaritas. Yes I had a few of those at the bar next door while I was waiting for a table. There is actually a bar located within' the Kona Kitchen called Yuji's Lounge. But since the pandemic it's been closed. Hopefully it'll open soon so I can have me a Kona Margarita. My Kona favorite is the Hamburger Steak. I am a big fan of Hamburger Steak. For those of you reading this who are not familiar with this dish, a typical Hamburger Steak comes with two hamburger patties and two scoops of rice that are topped with gravy as well a scoop of mac salad. I prefer to substitute the mac salad for an extra scoop of rice. But here at the Kona Kitchen it is served a little bit different. Instead of two separate patties, it comes with one big rectangular shaped patty. I've actually never seen it served that way before. But it was delicious none the less. I'm going to go ahead and say it right now that the Hamburger Steak served at the Kona Kitchen is better than s**. But as much as I love Kona Kitchen's Hamburger Steak, I do have one small gripe. It seems that they are a little bit skimpy with the gravy here. I'm used to going to local grind spots back home where they just pile on the gravy like they do at Wally Ho's in Aiea. Maybe it's just a thing where you got to ask for extra gravy. I don't know. Hopefully Chozen won't give me a Karate kick for saying that. After all, it was a delicious Hamburger Steak. One of the things I also feel I should mention about the Kona Kitchen is their great service. The servers here are attentive and friendly. But not in the annoying way that you'll find at restaurants like the Olive Garden. They are not all up your rear trying to up sell or any of that nonsense. They simply do what good servers should do and that's to provide their customers with good service. Refill the customer's drink before their glass is empty. Make sure the customer has all their sides such as salt & pepper, soy sauce, ketchup, and so forth. Ask them if they need anything else after their food arrives. Simple stuff like that. That's not too much to ask for is it? Well, you don't have to ask for it at the Kona Kitchen. The staff here will provide you with good old fashioned friendly customer service. So I am going to go ahead and wrap this review up by saying that whether you're a local, or a visitor to Seattle, definitely make your way over to the Kona Kitchen and fill your belly up with some groovy local grinds. You might even run into Chozen. Either way, you won't be disappointed. And while you're at it, check out "True Believer." It's a classic. Good Hawaiian place in North Seattle. They have a wide variety of traditional dishes on the menu and friendly staff. Food was OK, kalbi ribs were somewhat sparse given the price and mochiko chicken was a bit dry however the mac salad was good. The desserts are brought in once a week so unfortunately they were out of the guava cake on Wednesday. The sweet bread French toast was delicious and huge. The Belgian waffle was also huge and yummy. Kona Kitchen has THE best Portuguese sausage and egg omelette in town. It's huge and fluffy and with rice and soy sauce it just takes me think of back home. I have tried their chili and franks, hamburger steak, and Da Kanak Attack plates and a slew of other plates. However, I apologize to say that I have had better chili and hamburger steak elsewhere. The Kanak Attack plate has everything you could want and the portions are generous. Something about the chili just wasn't right for me. Maybe it had no beans or onions or something. Wished I had taken a photo of it to support my review. The hamburger steak was good but I ended up putting the rice on top of the hamburger and onions. Also, I thought it came with way too much onions. Their macaroni salad has changed for the better. I have been to the restaurant since 2011 and the mac salad was great. Then for some years it turned weird. Orangey color and tasted funky. Now it is much better and I love it again. I love macaroni salad and am not ashamed to voice my opinions. The staff here are friendly, attentive and you are greeted when you walk in. The menu is vast and definitely has something for everyone's taste. First time coming back here in years! I used to come here a lot in college/after college. I love the chill and homey vibe of the restaurant and all the servers are always so nice. I came here to catch up with a friend last week and we both ordered the Waimea lunch plate special that had both teriyaki beef and pork katsu, rice, mac salad and spring roll. Everything was really delicious and good portions as well! I used to order the loco moco and mochiko chicken back in the day and both were also really good. Highly recommend this place for brunch. I got the Loco Moco with white rice and corned beef hash, which was super tasty (that gravy!). However, the star of the show was definitely the Hawaiian Style Fried Rice. Quite possibly the best fried rice I've ever had, and that's saying a lot. Sure it may not be authentic islander food that some reviews complain about, but for me it definitely suffices when I crave for some mac salad and spam musubi. Surprisingly though it was only Monday, they had already run out of lau lua for the week. The kalua pork came out piping hot from the kitchen, and it's savory broth definitely warmed me up. It was a little too salty like other reviews said but eaten with the rice it was fine. The cabbage was cooked just enough where it was wilted but not too mushy. The mac salad was delicious, and the spam musubi was my favorite. The sauce they used for it was filled with umami and the spam was fried crisp and tasty.
