My family and I have visited this establishment since its location on University Drive, I think more than 20 years ago. While the food is merely adequate, occasionally disappointing (steer clear of the Chaufa and the Seco), it's generally acceptable and priced competitively. Truthfully, for Peruvian cuisine, numerous other restaurants come to mind first. However, my concern lies elsewhere. My sister, a regular customer due to its proximity to her home, placed a takeout order for six dinners several weeks ago. The portions of a specific dish were shockingly small, upsetting us all. It's especially galling when you suspect such stinginess is reserved for takeout orders - portions they wouldn't dare present to dine-in customers for fear of immediate complaints. 0n a subsequent day, she approached the owner to inform him in a very polite way of this discrepancy, assuming he might be unaware and wishing to prevent similar issues for other patrons. Instead of gratitude, the owner responded by loudly accusing her of lying! Having learned of this incident just a few days ago, I have cautioned my sister against such solo interaction, given the potential for some men, such as this individual, to act cowardly and abusive towards women they perceive as alone, not matter how nice they approach them. I just know this man wouldn't have acted that way if I was there. Being the lady she is, my sister didn't respond to this bully and simply left the place. We are a large family - seven siblings and numerous extended relatives. I am now strongly recommending that each of them boycott this establishment. I'm so glad I decided to give this place a try even after reading a lot of the negative reviews. I went here on a Sunday night and it's definitely busy. It's a small quaint location with a couple of outdoor table seatings and not many seats available inside. I did see a sign saying they are expanding and taking over the space next door. First and foremost, our waiter, Paolo, deserves a shout out. Hands down the best service ever. Honest recommendations and every dish we ordered came out hot and the ceviche was fresh! The staff service wasn't extremely attentive despite there only being 3 other tables occupied at the moment unfortunately. One recommendation I would suggest... to add english translations to explain the lunch specials as you do have it on other items in the menu. 3/12/2018 - I can always go for Peruvian food, especially Ceviche!. This restaurant's decor is more on the high end of other Peruvian restaurants I've been to in the past. They have about 10-12 tables, a few four tops and six tops. They also have a bar with four high top chairs. The place is clean and well kept. We were the only patrons in the restaurant, nice to have it all to ourselves. Our server, a young lady, was very friendly and attentive with us. She kept checking on us. After looking at the menu, we ordered the regular ceviche ($12.99) Portions are good, the ceviche was great. Flavors were excellent and the presentation was art. The prices are moderate. We ordered the Alfajor, a cookie sandwiching dulce de leche ($2.50). It came wrapped in white baker's paper. So excited to unwrap this delicious goodness but, we were disappointed. The cookie was very dry and unflavored and so was the dulce de leche. It seemed as it had been prepared weeks ago. Nothing about this alfajor tasted fresh. Kam Lu Wonton. Yup, I sure did! It didn't disappoint. If you like sweet and sour chicken, pork, and shrimp this dish is for you. Plus it comes with pieces of pineapple and veggies and the wontons, of course. My husband ordered his usual, chaufa de mariscos but this time it had an overwhelming flavor of ginger. We think maybe the cook forgot he had already put ginger and then added more. It's usually not like that. We are still going back though so don't get it twisted. The last time we were there, they were in the middle of expanding and remodeling so it was a nice surprise to see the end result. This small locale in a shopping plaza in Sunrise, was not what I expected from reading other reviews. Adjacent to the AMC Sunrise Movies, the restaurant offers typical Peruvian food. Where the gourmet comes into play is in that the food is well plated and served. We started with drinks: Maracuya (passion fruit juice) and water. Then the tag team of Eidy and Antonio brought over our meals which consisted of Tuna Causa as an appetizer. For those new to this, they mash the papa criolla or yellow potato, layering it in a metal ring, then the avocado comes in, and finally the tuna salad. This is repeated once or not, depending on the height they want to achieve. The Causa was beyond a shadow of a doubt, my very favorite! We were then served the Ceviche Trio which brought a pair of shrimp, a few more pieces of calamari, some cancha (corn nuts) and of course the white sway fish in leche de tigre (tiger's milk). To my pleasant surprise, it was non-dairy. As honest as I can be...I did not enjoy it. Having eaten ceviche from another restaurant recently, I was desiring the same melt-in-your-mouth texture; but the fish was quite tough. That was followed by Chicken Chaufa (which they prepare in a yellow sauce like that of the papa a la huancaina). This was pretty tasty! To end the experience, I needed to cleanse my palate and we had hot herbal tea and passion fruit cheesecake; which I totally recommend. The place is clean and well kept. The prices are moderate. The Customer Service is not fantastic, but I found our servers to be super friendly and that can sometimes turn a bad experience around for me. That said, the two things that removed points for them were: 1. When I called to find out their "Labor Day" hours, the lady who answered said it was very busy and sounded dissuasive in having us go. 2. When our server brought the check, just a minute before, my bank notification came on my phone and they had run my card with a 20% gratuity charge included. My son prompted me to ask and when I did, the lady came over explaining that it must have been my bank, as "We don't do that here!" I politely added that they should consider verifying their system; being that we were so happy with the duo, we wanted to tip more than the 20% and they had just limited them from receiving it by automatically charging gratuity on my card. She said she was sorry, they voided the transaction and re-run. We in turn gave our tip to our wonderful servers in cash! read more

This little mom and pop place opened up in the old Busters Doughboys location and they completely redid the inside to give it a much higher end, Peruvian style feel. The dining area is a little small so don't expect to come in wth a huge party. We came in and we're greeted right away by a friendly server. He explained some menu items and brought us those yummy addicting corn nuts. Three tiny bows later I ordered the ceviche. While it was good I prefer the type with the yellow sauce instead. (I'm sure it has a name but have no idea what it's called.) The portion size pretty big and comparable to other places I've been to and the seafood was also very good. The rest of the fam got various dishes including steak and pasta, seafood soup, and Lomo Saltado. Everything was great but not overwhelming awesome. Nothing about the Wide or de really blew me away. When it got busier our table seems to be forgotten and we had to flag the waiter down a few times for drink refills and for the check. I went there because another restaurant I was eager to go to was closed for vacation. The decor is nothing to write home about. The staff is attentive, and eager to help. It was happy hour so they had specials. I went with their sampler ceviche for $5.00. The flavor was Amazing! What wasn't amazing was the fish they used had veining, through it and the knife skills or lack of knife skills was disappointing. The chunks of fish were really big and when you thought you'd pick up one large one, you'd find you had another piece hanging from it. But like I said, the flavor was amazing. I ended up drinking the juice like it was a soup. I wish they could bottle that up. I also had a grilled chicken breast with salad. The chicken breast looked and smelled amazing. As a matter of fact, when they brought it out, someone said it smells like steak. LoL. The bad part was they had filet the breast or butterfly'd it and there where parts of it that felt gummy. Like it was still frozen in the middle and also it had some kind of sauce they put over it that was slimy. Although Peruvian is known for seafood and their version of chaufas, I had have grilled chicken in a lot of them, and this was the only Peruvian restaurant that disappointed with this dish. If I'm back in the area and my original choice of restaurant was closed, maybe I'd stop by again. Otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way to go there. read more

Another great Yelp find! Looking for something new to try for lunch during the work week, I came across the great reviews for Konakai, which is tucked away in the AMC strip mall off Pine Island. The restaurant is small, and simple, it's modern and very clean. We were promptly greeted by the server and our drink order was placed right away. They have a full menu of traditional Peruvian specialties, Chinese food and weekday Lunch menu with specials (about $9) which come served with a cup of cilantro chicken soup. I ordered the aji de gallina and my friend ordered the Lomo Saltado, the soup was delicious and so was my lunch, my friend was equally pleased with the food, we also took notice of the nice presentation which made the food even more appealing. We were concerned about how long it would take since we had to get back to work but everything came out super fast, first the soup and then the lunches. They also have the traditional Peruvian drink Chica Morada, which I had and was excellent, and my friend loved the Passion Fruit juice. I will definitely be returning, knowing that I will get great service, tasty quality food at a reasonable price and it's fast enough to go during my work lunch hour. This is a new restaurant located in the old Buster's Doughboy location in the Winn Dixie plaza off 44th. From afar, the name sounded Asian so I thought it was some sort of sushi restaurant. After going there for lunch one day, I was pleasantly surprised that it's a fusion between Asian and Peruvian food. I love those interesting mixes and fusion type foods so I was happy. The restaurant looked very simple and clean; you could tell it's new and it feels kind of empty. The employees were really friendly; I asked them what they suggested for food and the gentleman said that he loves the Sam Sen fried rice. I actually wanted to try their tacu tacu but they didn't have that available at that time; it's a Peruvian rice dish that's super saucy. I opted for the fried rice; I'm used to eating a protein with fried rice but my dish was just the fried rice which was odd to me. The dish was huge! I didn't want to order a side of proteins because it's lunch and I didn't want to go back to work tired from stuffing myself. The dish was actually really good with pork, chicken, and eggs. It was very flavorful. I had a bite of my husband's ceviche and it was so fresh. In the beginning, they provided us with roasted corn kernels which I think they called potatoes. It tasted like popcorn to me. They didn't have Diet Coke or Pepsi so I opted for a bottled mango nectar drink. I saw them bring the lomo saltado dish to another table and that looked amazing! Great ceviche spot in Sunrise if you don't want to drive to Miami for authentic Peruvian food. We ordered the classic and Amarillo and my husband tried the triple serving of the three varieties (tiradoro or something). The classic was just what you'd expect...pretty simple white fish ceviche like recipe with little spice, served with the giant corn and a slice of sweet potato. The Amarillo was very similar, but with a kick. And if you can't decide, the triple ceviche platter is a must, as it comes with classic, Amarillo and a reddish/pink ceviche. All very tasty, just depends on personal preference. Place is located in a big strip mall, but was easy to find if coming from the north since it's on the north side of the plaza. Plenty of parking. I do have to say that our server was fairly new so he could not explain some of the dishes we asked about.
