It was a blessing in disguise that Todai has been (permanently) closed, because we were diverted to this little gem, which has quickly become my new favorite Korean bbq restaurant. Service: Koreana has restored my faith in Chicago area Korean restaurants, which are notorious for terrible service, and they have revolutionized the system by adding a "call" button at each table. Yeah, I'm serious. You push the button and they come to you, it's brilliant. Food: Their marinated kalbi (short rib) is deliciously seasoned and perfectly juicy and tender. It's one of the best I've had in the Chicago area, and that's saying a lot. Our server did an expert job of cooking the entire batch for us, which was unusual since they usually leave you on your own. The sides and stews were great, but you really have to come for their awesome bbq. So put on some scrubby outfit you don't care about since you WILL come out smelling like a giant slab of cooked meat, come hungry, and get your MEAT on. The Korean food here is good. Good enough for a Korean person. All the other Korean places in the area either suck or they are only good for meat which is super expensive. The banchans (side dishes) here are superior to the surrounding Korean restaurants. If this is your first time or you arent' familiar with Korean food. Don't come on a weekend evening. It'll be too busy and you won't get the attention you need, but that is to be expected. Come on a deader night and I'm sure you will get a much better explanation on the different types of food here. And so glad was I to do that. The food was amazing. We went in for lunch and the service was a little slow therefore 4 star. Food was totally a 5 star. We had the combination BBQ platter. The waiter said it's for 2 people sharing... no it's totally for 4. There was so much food left for us. We were 4 of us. Ordered bibimbap, tofu soup in addition to the BBQ. I have been to Koreana Restaurant several times growing up in the area and it has changed...for the better. Recently, I dined there twice. I have brought colleagues from work and a best friend visiting from California. My friend wanted Korean BBQ and since my colleagues and I throughly enjoyed our experience with the food and service, I suggested Koreana again. We ordered just one of the Combo BBQ for 3 adults and 2 little kids. It was more than enough...Galbi, bulgogi, shrimp, spicy pork, etc. and plenty of yummy ban chan (side dishes). The service was great. The food was awesome. Our server actually grilled the meat for us, as I had a little baby and toddler to also attend to. I will definitely come here again and again! read more

I have worked at a Korean restaurant and Korean grocery store. I even married into a Korean family recently ^^ My husband and I are on a mission to dine at as many Korean restaurants in Chicagoland as possible... but Koreana is not one that we will return to. I would say Koreana is ok -if- you live nearby, but it definitely wasn't worth the 45-minute drive from our home. Food was bland... The banchan and kalbi were bland and unimpressive. My own Korean homecooking has much more flavor. Of all the Korean restaurants that I have reviewed on Yelp, I would say Koreana's banchan rank at the bottom. Koreana served: kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), eomuk (stir-fried fish cake), bean sprouts, broccoli with cho-jang, and something that resembled a cold jeon of some sorts. BBQ portion sizes are too small... I realize that Korean BBQ is expensive, but as you can see from the photo, one portion of thick samgyeopsal (pork belly) only has 4 pieces of meat for $20.99. The kalbi (marianted beef), which also seemed a bit skimpy, was $29.99. That's quite pricey considering many Korean BBQs charge $25 or $30 per person for All-You-Can-Eat. Service was bad... The staff is friendly. We were seated quickly. We were served tea and banchan quickly. But... the server started our BBQ at such an extremely low temperature, that after 20 minutes of our meat NOT cooking on the grill, we had to ask her to "please, turn up the heat!" All the banchan were gone before the meat was even cooked. And we were super disappointed that they didn't serve rice or doenjang (bean paste) soup with our meal. Every Korean restaurant we have dined at serves complimentary rice and soup. Oh, but then, as our meal neared the end, and the server turned off the BBQ grill because we were done grilling, only then did they serve the rice and soup. What's up with that Koreana?!?! One of the top Korean restaurants in the city. It's located in a strip mall and when I arrived there was no lighted sign. Hopefully that will get fixed soon. Even without a sign, though, it was packed on a Sunday night. Make reservations! We had the combination barbeque that we cooked on our table. It included beef bulgogi and short ribs. It was spectacular. I'm also partial to that spicy been curd soup that's a Korean specialty and they really did it right. Another thing that really sets this restaurant apart from other Korean restaurants I've tried is the wonderful friendliness of the staff. The waitresses were very attentive and the owners stopped by our table several times to make sure we were doing well. I will definitely come back when in Schaumburg! read more

My friend kept on insisting that I need to try this place because of their impeccable service and delicious food. So finally after a friend's graduation, we decided to give this place a try. We called ahead to reserve a table because we had a large group (thank goodness we did because it wasn't a huge place and it was getting busy). My section of the group opted out of korean bbq and decided to order other things off the menu: Appetizers: - Seafood Pancake - mixed seafood w/ onions fried in a batter. This is one of my favorite things to order in a Korean restaurant. I don't know why, but something about all the flavors and textures makes it delicious. Dip it in some homemade soy sauce for more flavor. - Ddukbokki - sweet and spicy rice cake w/ squid, fish cake and mix vegetables. If you like spicy food, then this dish is for you. All the flavors complimented each other well. Entrees: - Kimchi Jjigae - spicy soup with kimchi, tofu, vegetables, and pork. OMG...this was soo good. It was spicy and the right amount of sour. - Beef Chop Chae - clear noodles with beef and vegetables. This dish did not stand out for me. It was just average and taste like any other Korean place. The food also came with a couple of side dishes. It was not as much or as tasty as what I'm used to at other Korean restaurants. But overall, I enjoyed this place. I could go for more of the sides (Wae Loo Oak - closed) did this amazing and this place could get 5 stars from me if they handled that a little better, but in all it was still awesome and amazing. I think we freaked them out as the "suburban" kids who actually knew what we were doing, but once they saw that we could handle our own (tongs and scissors) then they played into the event and it was even better with (what we thought was the owner) critiquing our skills and then giving us an accepting smile. If you love Korean food, you need to check this place out the next time the bulgogi craving starts calling your name. The side dishes or panchan were all lovely, each presenting a slightly different marvel of texture, spice, and taste. These sides are refilled throughout the meal, which is wonderful as it allows you to build a massive array of different sensory experiences with all the wonderful things dancing across your plate. The combo platter featured rib-eye steak, bbq beef, pork, chicken, scallops, shrmp, and ribs. The waiter gladly cooked and prepared the meat for us, but we couldn't help but play with the tabletop grills (an undeniable sign of an amazing meal to come) and turn our own meats and enjoy the sizzle and great flavor of exquisite Korean BBQ. Korean BBQ is charred, slightly sweet, and imminently savory. Served with rice and two excellent dipping sauces, you become the conductor for a symphony of flavorful bites. I second Aloysius' opinion: those who are unfamiliar with the cuisine would do better to wait for a weeknight to visit this spot, as on the weekend this place is filled with (mostly Korean) patrons, which is another sign you've found a place which is about to give you a great representation of that source country's gastronomical delights. The restaurant is very lovely, not at all what you would guess from its' anonymous strip mall location. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get, and the quality is tops. Our waiter was the hardest working gentleman I've seen in a restaurant in my life. Jun was dashing around with a smile each moment of my party's very leisurely dinner, and not a glass or a side went unrefilled. We just watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain and my fiance wanted to try some KBBQ. Ive read many reviews on yelp for this place and shop in the strip mall often. Stopped in for lunch on a snowy January day. The place was pretty full. It was the boys first time having korean bbq and only my second. We ordered the combo with: kalbi, beef bulogi, chicken bulogi, shrimp, veggies, and pork for ~$40. Being newbies at this, Im sure our waitress thought we needed some help. First, the sides. My favorite was this shredded beef, it was sweet and spicy. The best meat was the thinly splices of beef, not sure what the name was. They all started to mix together. I also ordered the spicy soft tofu soup with seafood. It was delicious. Silky tofu and a nicely flavored broth that was not too spicy. While we were finishing up our meal, a man, perhaps an owner, stopped by and helped make sure we were doing well cooking our meats. He then came back a few minutes later to bring us 2 hot bowls of tofu soup. He noticed we had finished our white rice and brought us a new side of white rice to share. He insisted that we put some rice in the soup. It was so nice of him to do that and give it to us on the house. Totally unexpected and totally awesome. Ever since I moved from the city to the burbs, I've been hoping to find a delicious spot to satisfy my dolsot bi bim bop cravings. What can I say but...victory! Koreana serves up a delicious stone bowl filled with all the yummy fix'ns. Along with my food came a nice variety of banchan (those tasty little side dishes) and also miso soup. The miso soup was actually the only thing that was a bit bland and meh. Everything else was deeeeeelicious. My fiance was nursing a cold and deciding on a soup to order that would warm him up, but not be too spicy. One of the owners - an older man - came right over to our table and asked us if we had any questions or needed any help. We told him our conundrum, and he effusively told us he'd whip us up the perfect soup. When our food came out, the soup was delicious! The perfect level of spice, and filled with all kinds of delicious noodles, veg, meat, etc. The owner also insisted my fiance try some spicy pickled onions, claiming this would be sure to clear his cold. He emerged with a special little plate of the pickled delights (at no charge). This place was jam packed with folks on a Friday night around 6pm, and about 95% were speaking Korean, which seems to bode well for the authenticity of the food. I found everything we had to be delicious and just as good as the city staples SSGS, Cho Sun Ok, Solga (for their dolsot bi bim bop), etc. The restaurant is very cozy, and the owners and waitresses are really helpful and friendly. The owners walk around, shmoozing, joking and laughing with patrons. Very much a family run business. It's great! The owners make you feel very welcome. Definitely a different vibe than many other Korean BBQ spots I've been to where the service tends to be absolutely terrible. I was going to give this place four stars for dependable and tasty food, but the friendly servers and awesome owners pushed it up to a fiver. I highly recommend this place and will be going back. Great authentic Korean food! The husband and I went here for a late lunch while we were up north. I have had Korean food from time to time but never have I ate at an actual Korean restaurant. Goodness I am so glad we came here. Appetizer: Fried Dumplings: crispy outside and gooey deliciousness inside. These were the best dumplings we ever had. I could eat them everyday. I barely use the sauce because they were so good on their own. I truly suggest trying these babies. Main Course: Since we were grilling our own food (more details further below), we had to purchase two proteins - beef brisket and thick pork belly. The pork belly came out first. The ladies set up the grill and put it on for us. It was our first time doing this so the wonderful ladies did not mind essentially cooking the meat for us. I felt kinda bad but I am glad they were so helpful. One of the ladies show us how to make the lettuce wrap and the best sides to put in it. Oh boy. So flavorful. So tender. So heavenly. The hubby who doesn't even eat pork devour half the dish. :) On to the brisket, as a beef loving girl I couldn't get enough. It was thinly sliced and cooked quickly. It did take a little more to enhance the flavor but it was lovely. I have to say I preferred the pork belly. o Sides: With every meal, Koreans have several side dishes, kimchi being a primary. We had two different kinds including Napa cabbage kimchi, a staple. It wasn't the best kimchi I ever had but it was still enjoyable. We also had cole slaw, bean sprouts, a potato like item that was sweet. Something that resembled pickles but was not tarty just mushy. And finally a beefy thing. Have no idea what it was but it was good. Bonus: With the order of brisket, you will get Korean Miso soup. How can I explain this spicy, hot bowl of dreams. I love Japanese Miso. I truly do, but this topped all miso for me. I am not jaded and nothing would match this. It was extremely temperature hot so don't dig right in like I did. Wait but don't forget it. Overall: The experience was phenomenal and the food even better. The aunties there were cold but friendly and it seems the local Koreans like to visit this place often. Have been here for at least 10 times, near to my previous office. Good for lunch and dinner for me. If you want simple lung just order the Dumplings soup, which is healthy and good for lunch. If you want to have a big meal, traditional Korean BBQ is so good for family gathering or friends parties. With my son heading to South Korea for a month we've made a point of trying some of the local Korean restaurants lately. Koreana is in my old stomping grounds and I had been a number of times in the 80's and 90's. I had not been since I moved back to IL. The place is pretty much how I remember it. The décor has an Asian flare but isn't completely over the top. When we went for a late Saturday lunch it was busy, but not crowded. Prices are a bit higher than a typical Chinese restaurant, but with cause in my opinion. Our waitress was the owner's wife and she was very helpful in picking dishes that our son would likely see while in South Korea. We enjoyed a very good miso soup and a spicy miso soup. The traditional plates of side dishes came out and they were excellent. They were flavorful and spicy without destroying your taste buds for the rest of the meal. We enjoyed a shrimp and rice stir fry, grilled Spanish mackerel and a beef rib, make-it-yourself lettuce wrap dish. The shrimp and rice was quite good, but not far from a more typical Chinese version, which was expected. The grilled mackerel was excellent! Note, mackerel is an oily and more dense fleshed fish. If you do not like a "fishy" fish.. do not order the mackerel.. The beef rib dish was really tender and tasty. The owner came by and we shared that our son was heading to South Korea for an extended trip. He helped him figure out how to eat the rib dish, then hung out with us and provided lots of great insights on the food, culture and activities available in South Korea. Great Host, Great Food. I think Koreana has the best Korean food in the Chicagoland area (outside of my mom's kitchen). Korean restaurants aren't really known for good service, but I would say Koreana does a decent job. They are much more attentive than most Korean restaurants I've been to. They take reservations, and call ahead if you have a big party. They will accommodate you. Their galbi tang is delicious. It's beef soup with 3-4 thick chunks of beef short rib with Korean vermicelli, dates, radish, etc. It's savory soup with lots of garlic and tender short ribs that you barely even need to chew. My go to dish here. If people ask me recommendations for Korean BBQ, I tell them to come here. The meat is good quality and decently priced. You get what you pay for here. I usually get chadol (thin slices of beef) and samgyupssal (thick slices of pork belly). If you want the full experience, get some alcohol like a true Korean would. soju or makoli (Korean rice wine). Mix the makoli with sprite! read more

Came here on a Thursday around 6pm or so. Place was nicely packed but there was no wait, and the atmosphere was great. Everyone was enjoying themselves! (And the decor is pretty nice and homey too) Banchan were fresh and tasty. Bulgogi was oh so good. Chap chae (sp?) was also delicious. I was given a spicy soybean paste soup (Doenjang jjigae) along with the Bulgogi, which was great! I didn't really see that listed on the menu so it was a pleasant surprise. The miso soup my cousin received, however, was very bland. But, it's miso soup; that's far from what we came here to eat :D Our bill came to $32 - I'd say that's damn reasonable for two full bellies of goodness! Also, the service here was great. I mean, probably not to the level large American chains adhere to, but I find their ass-kissing style to just be too much anyway. I went here on Friday night for the first time and Yum!!!!!!!! I was there about 7ish and it wasn't full at all. Apparently the guy that was working there (maybe the owner?) said that for the past 2 years he's noticed that it's never full on Friday. The service was quick and the food was so tasty. This was the first time the bulgogi was cooked in front of me b/c i usually order take out but wow! This is my standard Korean fare and BBQ go to joint in my area. Nothing spectacular and service is typically lacking. They do try their best but there is way more square footage than their meager staff can handle during peak hours. The food is a cut above the other Korean restaurants in the immediate area so I go here by default. Their lunch specials are the best value for miles around. You get tons of food for either $4.95 or $5.95, the latter price includes chicken. It's barely smaller than their much more expensive super combination plate and contains all the same items.
