We visited Koreana after seeing a great review on NBC. It did not disappoint! The owner personally showed us how to order and cook the food at the table. The brisket and chicken were delicious! The meats came with unlimited sides and soup. There is a button on the table to call the wait staff with any of your requests. The prices were reasonable and the service was excellent. Years ago, I had written a review for here on a previous account that no longer exists (thanks Yelp) so after being a loyal customer for many years, I thought I'd write anothee review. Food: still very good Kbbq: this review solely judging kbbq galbi and beef tongue only. Cooked on gas grill. Service: very nice couple that runs the restaurant, mom and pop feel for sure Love Mr. and Mrs. Chang (the owners) ! So heartwarming on a cold day :) Mr. Chang is always smiling and showing that Korean hospitality. Galbi is still great quality, but back in the day, the galbi use to be the best where I could see the marbling so beautifully. Don't know if they changed their meat source, but with rise in prices, I would have expected similar quality. There's definitely competition brewing for who actually has the best "prime" galbi in town now. The soup that comes with the kbbq order is the best out of all the Illinois kbbq places. Nicely seasoned, not your typical bland watery soup. Other soups on the menu are also very good. Nice clean place. And they also remodeled/remodeling so it will be one of the better looking places. When I go out for Korean food I look forward to 2 things: 1. Food served in a stone bowl that's hot enough to turn coal into diamonds 2. At least a tinge of casual rudeness from the staff Koreana delivered on both. I loved this place and personally my heart gives it a 5, but for the sake of full disclosure regarding it's quirky and imperfect (but still very much lovable) atmosphere, I'm going with a 4. -- We walked in around 6:30 on a Sunday evening to dining room about 2/3 full -- Hostess: You have reservation? Me: No, we... Hostess: **Walks away hurriedly** Me to my partner: She just walked away... Does that mean 'go home'? What does that mean? I don't know what that means? Young Korean Family Who's Also Waiting To Be Sat: Yeah, they do that here. They'll seat you when they seat you and you won't get an estimated time. Me: Good to know. -- About 15 minutes later the hostess woman comes over and tells us we'll sit "there" and points to a small table that's being cleaned in another dining room next to an oddly placed refrigerator in the middle of the dining area -- Me: Ok. They put menus on our table and walked away and it took us a few minutes to figure out that we needed to press the button on the table to call a server and order. We knew going in that there likely wouldn't be a ton of veggie options, so we usually end up with dolsat bibimbop, which is just fine by me. We also got their spicy tofu appetizer that wasn't spicy at all, but I'm a person who likes stuff super spicy to the point where your nose is running into mouth and I pretty much always find myself feeling like Korean spice levels are ultra tame. We kind of only ordered the tofu appetizer because my partner was worried the bibimbop wouldn't be enough to split (even thought it always is) and this was one of like 3 veggie options on the menu. We weren't expecting much, but what we got was an absolutely huge portion of perfect tofu, scallions, and a light spicy sauce that we came very close to fighting over. I will get this dish every time I come back... in fact, we might have to get two of these dishes to avoid any kind of sharing debacles. Next came the banchan, which they're more than happy to refill endlessly, and miso soup that apparently comes with any order of bibimbop. The miso was the least salty I've ever had and very good (even though I do crave the sodium). The bibimbop came as expected in a monstrous stone bowl with all the trimmings. They were diligent in ensuring that no meat made it's way into any of our dishes and we appreciated that as 80% of time that isn't the case. The egg wasn't as runny as we'd hoped, but did let the bowl sit extra long to crisp the rice so that could be on us. The servers won't come by unless you buzz them, and I kind of like that. Highly efficient. The atmosphere isn't the greatest and it isn't a spotless place, but what can you expect at a place that lets customers cook their own food? When we left the bar was absolutely stacked with glasses that needed to be dumped and washed and they don't appear to have central air by the looks of the 8 different portable AC units that definitely make the place a tad loud and even though the place is small, there's about 12 televisions throughout both dining rooms so no matter where you're sitting you can watch at least 3 of them... all set to golf... which everyone in there was watching intently. Final tip: Make a reservation... no matter the day/time/number in your party, you'll avoid what could be a lot of confusion and awkwardness with just a little phone call. read more

Great place for Korean BBQ. I'm not even sure what all we had. We ordered so many different things and they kept bringing us more dishes to try. You definitely do not leave here hungry. Lots of Korean people dining here so that is probably a good sign. The only issue I had with the whole meal was the fact that the server runs the BBQ grill at the table. Our server kept cross-contaminating raw meat with cooked meat and that is a huge NO-NO! She would touch raw meat with the tongs and then pull cooked meat off the BBQ and plate it up. We finally had to show her the error of her ways and asked her not to do that. She didn't quite get it so we finally took over the grilling operation. The owner of the restaurant came by and chatted with us for a few minutes and then brought us some Korean wine on the house. A great time was had by all. Fast forward 6 hours....I was laying in bed, on the verge of good REM sleep when suddenly all hell broke loose. I had a gastrointestinal event like nothing I've ever imagined. Cramps, sweating, bloating beyond my worst nightmare. I've had food poisoning from some bad shellfish and that was almost like a skip in the park compared to what was going on inside me. Then came the, uh, flatulence. Heavens to Murgatroyd, the sounds, like trumpets calling the demons back to Hell...the stench, like 1,000 rotten corpses vomited. I couldn't stand to stay in one room for fear of succumbing to my own odors. But wait; there's more. What came out of me felt like someone tried to funnel Niagara Falls through a coffee straw. I swear my sphincter was screaming. It felt like my delicate starfish was a gaping maw projectile vomiting a torrential flood of toxic waste. 100% liquid. Flammable liquid. NAPALM. It was actually a bit humorous (for a nanosecond) as it was just beyond anything I could imagine possible. AND IT WENT ON FOR HOURS. I felt violated when it was over, which I think might have been sometime in the early morning of the next day. Will I go back? Sure. But next time, I'm running the grill. read more

I met my boyfriend here for lunch and as far as Korean food goes, I was not impressed. I think there are much better restaurants around. One thing I have noticed is that Korean restaurants can either make an awesome Bulgogi or Jue Kah Jeng soup. I have yet to find a restaurant that does a great job with both. This was the case with Koreana. The Bulgogi was great and a huge portion. But my spicy soup was lacking in spice and ingredients. It seemed watered down. I had to add salt to give it some flavor. Only...you also get refills on the banchan. And the rice. And your hot tea (if you drink hot tea). No extra charge. The portions on the main lunch items are also extremely generous. I'm talking, you won't want dinner if you eat lunch here, because you'll be too full. Added to that, the food is seriously great. Made reservations for dinner for 2 earlier in the day. When we arrived, there was already a bunch of people in front of us. It was confusing because we waited awhile but no one came to us. I finally went to the front of the restaurant and told the lady about our reservations. She simply said okay. From that point on, I was expecting slow/poor service for the rest of the night, especially as we continued to wait without given a proper response. Also, we noticed a couple of empty tables, but no one was being seated. A bunch of other tables cleared out and the little old lady came to everyone and simply asked who was next. I reminded her about our reservations and she seated us, not because of our reservations, but simply because I spoke up next. All in all though, we waited about 10 minutes. Everything changed the moment we were seated. Each table had a call button, so when pressed, someone comes immediately to assist you. That was amazing. Not only that, many people came by casually asking how we were doing and very genuinely doing so. We had the seafood pancake to start and it was amazing. They jam-packed the pancake with seafood and scallions and was almost too much, relative to the batter. It was delicious, accompanied by perfectly grilled octopus and a sweet sesame soy sauce for dipping. I had the spicy tofu soup with seafood. Their portions were a lot bigger than other places (92 Town & Ttowa). I immediately tasted the broth and it was the perfect spicy seafood flavor. However, I did not find too many seafood pieces in my soup. Nonetheless, it was delicious. The egg was likely put in a little too early as it wasn't as runny as it should be, as it was already slightly cooked in the hot soup (92 Town's egg was perfect). Just as tasty if not more than 92 Town's but definitely larger portion. My boyfriend had the spicy beef soup, and it was a little too spicy for him, but he still enjoyed it. His portion was even bigger than mine, so much so, that we had leftovers (we never have leftovers). All in all, a little pricy, but Korean food generally is, but huge portions and delicious authentic food and the best service I've had in a long time, which means a lot, especially for an Asian restaurant. This was a busy Saturday night, it was just before 9 when we got seated. Our party of five split an order of beef bulgogi and Korean bbq combination which included beef galbi, ribeye steak, jumbo shrimp, mushrooms and chicken and pork bulgogi. The owner (I forgot his name, I have to go back and ask now) is an unassuming man with a quirky sense of humor. When I asked for a bottle of soju, he came back with his own shot glass at one point and shared a shot with us. The sides kept coming, the Bulls were on and winning against the Hornets. Everything was delicious. And the shaved ice dessert (patbingsoo) with vanilla ice cream and assorted toppings (beans, fruit and jellied items) ended it all just right. On a Friday right after work (around 8pm), there wasn't much of a wait for a party of 2. Maybe we were just lucky. The restaurant was packed and a line developed later in the evening. I love that feeling when you're at an awesome place but didn't have to wait! I got the yukgaejang which is a Korean beef soup. The ingredients tasted fresh and the soup was hearty and well seasoned. It's mildly spicy, but definitely nothing compared to other spicy Korean dishes. My friend ordered the dolsot (hot stone bowl) bibimbap. It looked fresh and yummy. The banchans (free side dishes) didn't disappoint, usually my favorite part of eating at a Korean restaurant. And as with other Korean restaurants, they'll keep the banchans coming to your heart's content. The food was a tiny bit on the pricier side, I think, for this kind of cuisine, but at least it was quality. Overall, I was quite satisfied. Korean food. Who doesn't love Korean food? I heard a lot of good things about this place - the food and the the ambiance. Koreana is placed within a strip mall, therefore is a huge parking lot and entrance is clearly visible. On the night that I went, there were several smokers outside the entrance doing their thing. Personally, I don't mind the smokers, but parents with children who are going to eat there are going to be a little annoyed. My friends and I walked into the foyer and the smells were AWESOME. The place was packed we waited for 10 minutes to get a table. As hostess walked us to our table, I looked around at the decor. The place is medium-sized with a party room to the right side of the main dining room. I noticed that there's a bar and TVs in the room. I was expecting to see Korean television, but it was an American baseball game ... :( ... the food portions on the the tables of patrons were huge! We looked at the menu as a family. I didn't look at the menu beforehand. I was quite angry to find out that if you want Korean BBQ, that there's a 2 order minimum. That's sad. They don't even have a website ... /sadder I was really hungry for dol sot bibimbap - which I got. My friend got the pork bulgogi. For an appetizer - we got the pajeon. Here's the dish-by-dish breakdown: - The dol sot bibimbap - Bean Sprouts. Gosari. Cucumber. Pickled Vegetables. Spinach. Fried Egg. Seaweed Flakes. I asked for a raw egg, which I'm used to eating vice a fried egg on top. The waitress and hostess didn't know what I was talking about ... /sad - The pork belly bulgogi was a little underwhelming, however, IMHO, it was bo ssam served with lettuce leaves, white rice, typical sides of pickled vegetables, doenjang (fermented bean paste) ... honestly, my bo ssam/pork belly bulgogi is much better. - The pajeon - it was huge, and very filling. It was a little greasy and it needed more scallions. The dipping sauce needed a little work - it needed more acid (lemon juice). Overall, it's a good experience. Best food experience I have had in a very long time anywhere. The food was unbelievable. However that seems to be easier part for resteraunts. Where this place blew me away was the service. They have a call button there on the table just hit the call button and they bring you anything you might need super fast. But in all honesty what really separated this place was how the owner or the resteraunt (or how he put it the husband of the owner) came over and showed us all the combinations of the food and how to best eat them and made tons of reccomendations, he really made the experience special. I have definitely experienced better. I guess the caliber of Korean cuisine was just not what I expected or what I am used to (given that I am a Northern California girl who grew up with an abundance of Korean restaurants in the vicinity of my hometown). Anyway, all biases aside, Koreana makes a good effort - and I figure that the style of Korean cuisine in the Midwest is just unlike that of either coast - so I really cannot hold Koreana responsible for that. The restaurant owners are Korean, and the majority of the restaurant patrons are Asian, which is always a good sign when trying out a new ethnic restaurant. The restaurant is relatively spacious, and for a place that does a lot of kBBQ, it does not leave a strong stench on your clothing, which is great. We chose to stick with our usual menu items: my mom ordered the stone bowl bibimbap and I ordered a seafood tofu soup. The bibimbap was average, and in all honesty, you really can't get bibimbap wrong. All you really need is the bibimbap paste/sauce to make any regular ol' bowl of white rice taste like a bibimbap. The ingredients seemed plentiful enough, but once again, it didn't make a very big impression. My seafood tofu soup was all but too spicy for me. It wasn't until the piping hot bowl came to the table that I realized that the waitress had never asked me how spicy I wanted the tofu soup....well, I spent the next 10 minutes fishing out the layer of hot oil from the surface of my soup. Also, the 'seafood' was a few measly pieces of calamari and oysters - really not enough to merit the extra cost. The banchan wasn't great either. The assortment was lacking, and honestly, all of the side dishes were kind of sad and limp looking. Usually, we go through a few refills of banchan over the duration of our meal, but here, we didn't even touch half of the side dishes. I noticed that many other neighboring tables also left their banchan untouched, which speaks volumes about the preparation of the side dishes. I think Koreana suffices if you are in the area and really craving some sort - any sort - of Korean food. Perhaps Koreana is better for kBBQ than it is for their other menu items - so that could be our fault as well. Needless to say, I probably won't be back for their bibimbap or tofu soup. read more

I came here with my family to have some korean BBQ. Not really great for big parties that all want BBQ (only the smaller tables have the BBQ grill built-in) but since half of us wanted regular food, it was fine. The meat was good but nothing spectacular. I was also disappointed with the panchans. We got about 7-9 (which sounds like a lot but I don't really think so). I so wish that sliced pickled daikon was more common here like it is in LA because I love to eat that with my bbq! The seafood pajun was delicious. Perfect ratio of all the elements! The dukbokki was awesome too. I can't handle spicy well but this one had a very subtle spicy with a hit of tangy/sweet. At Koreana, the servers speak English and the menus are translated with descriptions for added convenience. Koreana does a great job of welcoming non-Koreans. During the most recent visit, all of the diners were from diverse backgrounds and weren't Korean. The menu has your popular items from soups to Korean BBQ and the prices were reasonable. I was taken back from the portion that came out for the spicy braised beef soup. The bowl itself was the size of my bathroom sink. I came here tonight with a party of 3 to check out their Korean food. After reading about the Korean BBQ (K-BBQ), my husband and I ordered their "Combo (For 2)" BBQ, which included shrimp, bulgogi, kalbi, chicken kalbi, daeji bulgogi (pork ribeye), mushrooms, and onion. Our friend ordered the dduk-mandoo-gook (rice cake and dumpling soup). SERVICE (Preface): The service wasn't that great (NOTE: Don't stop reading here. You MUST keep reading to understand why I note this as such). Because we had K-BBQ, we had someone coming around frequently to cook our BBQ food. However, once we were done, they didn't swing by anymore. One woman came by once to refill our waters once without asking. SERVICE (Cont'd): Towards the end, we were disappointed that they didn't swing by anymore and check up on us; ask if we were okay, etc. We were waiting for them to come with our check!! We waited and waited and waited. But then ("light bulb goes off!"), we realized that they have the SERVICE BUTTONS. We were thinking like Americans and not like Koreans!! American-style: Be served well: the servers come by all the time and ask you if you need anything, how your food is, etc.... Korean-style: Let the servers know when you need something!!! Totally forgot that this restaurant has the service buttons. When you need something, you push that little button with weird characters that is next to your table. That gets the servers attention! They come when you push the button and you can let them know at that time!!! Totally forgot that they had this! OUR FAULT. FOOD (K-BBQ): Portions were reasonable for the price you paid. I thought that the portions for the BBQ was pretty generous. However, I wasn't impressed by the seasonings. They were "okay". Personally, I didn't think they had enough flavor/seasoning/marinade. They were too lightly seasoned and could have had more flavor. I felt this way about all of them. The two best that I enjoyed were the (1) bulgogi, and (2) daeji bulgogi (pork bulgogi). The chicken kalbi lacked flavor and wasn't too impressive. The kalbi - same as chicken kalbi. FOOD (Dduk Mandoo Gook "rice cake and dumpling soup"): While I did not taste this myself, he said it was good. He enjoyed it. After reconsidering some of the reviews and going ourself, I am leaning towards the fact that their dishes (soups, jjigaes, etc.) may be better than their BBQ, but I'll report back after I go back again. COST: This is a relatively more expensive Korean restaurant. I give it $$ (not sure what yelp has it at). On average, your dish (be it soup, noodles, appetizers, etc.) are greater than $9.99. If you're looking for cheap Korean food, this is not your place. If you want to take somebody to impress them with more expensive food, this may be it. WHILE the food is slightly more expensive, I think they make up for it with very generous portions. The dduk-mandoo-gook was fairly large. The guy only ate 1/2 of it! AMBIANCE: For a Korean restaurant in Chicago, it was clean, and they had nice decor. Not overly fancy but not too casual. CONCLUSION: All in all, a decent Korean restaurant (not cheap). Was not impressed with their BBQ, but it is still A-OK, and I DO want to go back to try their non-BBQ food. Other peoples' non-BBQ dishes looked tasty. Will go back again, but not for K-BBQ. Great layout, great atmosphere and friendly service. Food comes out fresh and smoking hot (literally!) Nice little find. The staff is friendly and always on top of their game. They are quick and even quicker if you need them, push the little button on the wall by your table, it's magic powers will summon someone post haste to help you with whatever your needs be. The owner is a humble man who has no problem walking around greeting and chatting to everyone. Lovely place. It's good to step outside the regular places and venture into a new world like this. The servers kept coming over to help us cook even on a busy Friday night. Sometimes when you get caught up talking you forget to turn the meats but the servers kept coming over to help us out and cook everything properly. Maybe they could tell we were newbies at it, but it was SO impressive and appreciated! I wish I got the name of the one gentlemen who kept coming to our table. He was an older man and I believe he may of owned the establishment. He kept cracking jokes with us and asking if everything was ok and gave us seconds on side dishes he noticed we finished quickly. We ordered two bottles of soju to drink during the meal. By the end of the meal as we were digesting and just chatting this wonderful man came over and poured us more drinks. Then left the bottle! On the house! It was such a kind genuine gesture that really was the icing on the cake to such a wonderful dining experience. This is absolutely going to be my new go-to for bringing my friends to. The food here is as close to Korea as you'll get in the suburbs, especially if you know the food well. I tried it expecting something a bit like any Americanized version of say, Chinese food, but no, their appetizers and dinner entrees were all fresh and very authentic. I especially like the little free tasting bites they provide before your meal. It gives you a good idea about all the pickled foods they prepare, not to mention some of the exotic flavors and veggies. A pretty nice Korean restaurant hiding in the suburbs in a plaza that doesn't have much traffic. The interior has a very old school feel to it. It's very pleasant. The banchan (side dishes) were good. For the main course we order Ssang galbi (short rib that's not marinated) and Seasoned Galbi (short rib that is marinated). Both were phenomenal. The regular meat was very tender and melted in your mouth. The seasoned meat didn't taste so heavy at all. It melted in your mouth and seasoned perfectly. I really enjoyed this place. I just wish it was closer to the city but hopefully I'll be able to go again. Service was great as well. read more

I was surprised at how full it was with Koreans and non-Koreans alike; it's a scene I don't usually see unless I'm dining in Chicago, so I figured business must have been relatively good to attract such a gathering under one roof. The place is nice as well; pretty clean, and feels warm with all the wood interior. Ventilation could be better due to all the people choosing to grill food indoors, though. I had the kalbi tang (short rib soup), which wasn't bad- They give you a generous portion of soup AND meat/glass noodles- I'm just unsure whether the broth had milk incorporated to give it a creamier appearance (a common trick of Korean restaurants, unfortunately) or if that state was really from proper hours of boiling. In any event, it tasted fine at least. Nevertheless, if you ask me what is really worth having here, it is the kalbi. Though it is a bit on the expensive side for two cuts of ribs, I have never had such quality meat in literal years. I really appreciate how it was not too sweet or fatty either, so the flavor of the beef and smoke is not lost. I would surely come back here just for that, and I can see it happening really soon. read more

Don't judge the book by cover. The outside of this restaurant doesn't do justice to the inside and the food it serves. I confess I have been by the restaurant twice before I finally went in. And so glad was I to do that. The food was amazing. We went in for lunch and the service was a little slow therefore 4 star. Food was totally a 5 star. We had the combination BBQ platter. The waiter said it's for 2 people sharing... no it's totally for 4. There was so much food left for us. We were 4 of us. Ordered bibimbap, tofu soup in addition to the BBQ. We had more food then we could eat. But we were very happy with all of them. Will sure visit again whenever we go pass Chicago. A must visit for Korean food lovers. read more

THE SOON DUBU AVENGER STRIKES AGAIN In my never-ending quest to find the perfect bowl of soondubu, I braved the bitter cold and the vast desolate wasteland of the Schaumburgian strip malls and stumbled upon Koreana (which also apparently masquerades as 'House of Taste' if you check your receipt). The strip mall outside is bleak and shabby like a strip mall should be, but the inside is actually very nice with an assortment of both cooktop and non-cooktop tables and the requisite flat screen TV playing breath-taking Korean music videos. Browsing their selection of lunch specials, I got the soondubu for $7.99 which included six plates of panchan, rice, and tea. I was a little skeptical at first because my soup had beef instead of seafood in it, but all my doubts vanished after my first bite (or slurp); it was delicious! Extra points for the great service (not always a given at some Korean restaurants) and for my attentive server who refilled my panchan without me having to ask. I'm glad I found Koreana and will definitely be back as winter drags on. read more
