I can not say enough good things about this restaurant. If you want high quality delicious sushi this is your place. Granted it's a bit expensive but it is worth every penny. I got so much serotonin eating this meal because of how fresh and amazing it was. There wasn't 1 piece left! We've been coming here for years mainly for special occasions but not one bad meal ever! Staff is always friendly! With the sushi for 3 combo it also comes with soup and salad and a free platter of the oysters I believe there are 6 with it. So I'm really conflicted about this place because there's things that I like and things that I don't like. The price is pretty good, you can get a sizable amount of sushi and sashimi for 2 for $36 but for some reason it's definitely not my favorite sushi or sashimi. It doesn't taste that fresh to me and regardless of whether I'm paying a cheaper amount I still expect it to taste good but my fiancé and I ended up leaving a lot of the sushi and sashimi on the table. The actual entrees (hot food) is really good though. I loved the chicken teriyaki and sea bass. I would probably go back to try more of the hot food but I don't know if I would necessarily come back for the sushi or sashimi. read more

Hands down my favorite sushi place. No doubt about it. This will always be my #1 Sushi Spot!!! On to the review... I always enjoy the otoshi noodles (speaking of which I kind of have a hankering for them now ugh) you get when you first sit after that long wait. If you refuse to try them.. try them. Especially if you like a little heat. If you like them I highly suggest getting take out one night and ask for an order of them. For $5 that small container in my book packs a great little punch of heat. Anyway off to my usual order of a glass of plum wine and sautéed oysters to start. Then I'll usually get a Cinderella (which by the way I love how they made this a new roll and not one of their "special" rolls that you can get for a limited time) and a Crazy or an Out of Control roll or even all 3 rolls sometimes we pick a random one. Depends who I'm dining with and if we can share the plate of sushi. Food reviews have to be relative. Otherwise every Japanese restaurant in NYC would be compared to Jiro's restaurant in Japan right? So in the bubble we call Long Island, Kotobuki serves the best sushi hands down. Yes there are places I like better in Manhattan but I can't drive to Manhattan just for sushi(well not all the time). Fresh sushi with some nice cooked dishes like the miso-glazed seabass. The portions are large! Would not recommend the sushi and sashimi deluxe combo for two unless you can both put down. The little things here are just noticeable: the warm hand towel, the free appetizer, the miso soup tastes like it wasn't made from a powder, they have a fair selection of Japanese beers and sake. They really don't need my rating. There's an hour + line during peak times. I usually go around 4:45 pm to get a table at 5 pm or late around 940 pm. The hype is out there. Long island people are crazy. avoid the rush! My strategy: show up at Kotobuki, give your name and phone number, 1 hour wait? no big deal, head across 347 to Tap & Barrel for some beers and wait for them to call you. best combo ! read more

I was really happy and surprised that a lot of the rules were new so I tried a new rule called Mardi Gras it was delicious. A pleasing quality of rolls that is hidden away in Eastern LI. We had a reservation for a large group and was seated in their larger table in the back. The whole restaurant is small and it is nestled in an unassuming strip mall in Hauppauge. The decor is clean, modern and restrained. The service was good. We had ordered platters of their sushi-for-4 and 2. As a part of that order (I think?) we got some interesting cooked clam appetizer. It was refreshing but I don't think I would order it separately. The rolls and the sushi were delicious. They did not skimp on the fillings. I was skeptical about being full as we had split the whole thing among like 8 people but we were all pretty full by the end of the meal. They hit all the mark I expect from a regular sushi place. The platter catered to both the more refined taste and the tempura-fry-everything crowd. The only weird thing they had was this Chipotle mayo tuna and avocado thing. I love avocado but the mayo was overpowering. We had fried ice cream for dessert which was also interesting. I haven't had much fried ice cream, but this was the first time I saw the ice cream wrapped in pastry before being fried. I think I might've had low expectations with sushi in Suffolk county, but I was amazed with the quality and freshness of the sashimi and sushi here at Kotobuki. We arrived here at 8:30pm on a Sunday and it was actually pretty empty. I was told that there tends to be a wait since it's not a big establishment, but luckily we didn't have to wait. We ordered a sashimi platter for 3, but it was actually a lot and fed our party of 6 easily. Sushi rolls were delicious and it was proportioned well. Truly Amazing! When I need a sushi fix, this is my top place to go. The location of this gem is within a shopping center and could easily be missed since there is only a red sign with "Sushi" above its door instead of its restaurant name. The outside appearance can make you easily mistaken the great quality that waits inside. I never had a problem with service here. The staff kindly welcomes customers and is generally fast. Every table is given a welcome complementary sampler of cold Otoshi noodles. The restaurant itself does not take reservations and the seating fills pretty quickly within the first twenty minutes from opening. There could be a thirty minute to hour wait if the place gets filled and busy. However I think the wait is totally worth it. I would highly recommend getting the sushi for one, two or three (depending how big your group is). The sushi for two can easily feed three to four people. This option (Sushi for two) comes with two miso soups, two green salads with lettuce, sliced carrots a ginger dressing, a tray of sauteed oysters and the huge tray of sushi rolls, sashimi, seared fish and nigiri. If you have more than two people for the sushi for two, they would gladly add the extra orders of salad, soup and oysters, if needed. The sauteed oysters are to die for. The oyster is fried and placed back into its shell with the luscious butter garlic sauce. The richness of the oyster is well balance with the garlic and acidity of squeezing the lemon on top cuts through the richness. Also you have to slurp them down. Using a fork is cheating you on the experience of eating a oyster, plus then you miss drinking the great sauce. There is a large amount of seafood for the sushi for two platter. Usually when my sister and I order this meal, we eat about half and save the rest for lunch the next day. Compared to other Japanese sushi and sashimi places in NYC and around New York, nothing has matched to the skill of their chefs and freshness of its quality of fish and seafood. It literally tastes as if the seafood was fresh out of the ocean. If you like to try a variety, I suggest trying their special combo bento box option. In addition to the green salad and miso soup, you get a choice of meat/ fish in teriyaki sauce, a california roll, pork goyzas and tempura shrimp and vegetables. The size of the bento box for this restaurant is really more like a bento half table. Plenty of food for you to also take away home for lunch the next day. If you would like to cleanse your palate with a drink besides green tea, I suggest trying the house plum wine. It has sweet and tart notes and is a traditional Japanese wine that is only found in Japanese restaurants. Save room for dessert! Two options you should definitely try are their fried ice cream and rice cream mochi. Their fried ice cream is unique since you get to choose between red bean, green tea or ginger ice cream and they use a sweet potato bread shell in addition to the tempura-battered. The rice cream is a marshmallow rice shell filled with vanilla ice cream. Overall the price, service and the quality of the food makes this place a must go. It is great for the family, friends and dates. The location in the East Village is just as good for those who are unable to make the drive out to Hauppague. Or if you like to order out for take away, it is also available at the restaurant. read more

I have only been here once for lunch. This review is based on that experience and will obviously need to be updated once I return for dinner (which I plan on following a very satisfying lunch experience.) I was told to get here early... When they open... They fill up fast... They do! We got here shortly after they opened and it was already packed, luckily, there was a table for four seemingly waiting for us. The service was quick and the waiter came over, poured water, and took our drink and food order. They move quick here. Clearly, that want you in to enjoy, and get out quickly to make room for the people waiting. They have an amazing menu selection here but having a time restriction I simply went with the Miso Soup and CRAZY yellowtail, served with tobiko, avocado roll topped w/ diced fish, tempura flakes, scallions & spicy mayo concoction. The Miso soup was absolutely the best I have had, savory and flavorful (don't they both mean the same thing?) There were nice pieces of tofu inside, unlike the few mortals you usually get in the soup elsewhere. The yellow tail was exquisite... Just so fresh. I loved the topping with a little bit of crunch and heat from the mayo "concoction." Loved the warm towel... While we we there, the next table ordered the Sushi for two... (There were two at the table.) To me, it looked like sushi for 4. There is no question that I will put that item on my "you must order list." The menu was clearly the biggest menu I have ever seen at a sushi restaurant and I am looking forward to returning and starting right from the top. My family has been coming to this gem in a shopping center in Hauppaugue since our boys were little. I was there this evening with one of my sons, daughter-in-law and a dear friend. It just occurred to me that I've never bothered to write a review for this wonderful place that has been a part of our family for so many years. Hands down, this place serves some of the best Japanese cuisine, sushi, sashimi and rolls that I have ever had. I am one of the dinosaurs in New York that began eating sushi back in the 80s before sushi was a big thing around here. The quality of the fish is fresh and delicious. The presentation and preparation of the food is far superior to many other restaurants. We ordered a platter of sushi for 3, which comes with miso soup, salad an abundance of creative and delicious rolls some cooked salmon with spicy mayo tuna with avocado. I nearly forgot to mention the delicious sautéed oysters which precede the sushi/sashimi platter. It's not the abundance and variety, but the quality , which is amazing! I hadn't been in quite some time. When you see servers that have been there for so many years, it speaks volumes about the staff and the management. We came for a quick dinner before going over to the ducks game to watch the fireworks. We arrived at what we thought was the opening time for dinner but the place was already getting busy. It isn't a large restaurant but they pack in a lot of tables. We were a group of 4 and arrived right after a group of 6 who were given a nice table in the corner. We were not so fortunate and was sat in the middle parallel to the sushi bar. Those tables were arranged too close to each other. The tables next to us were less than a foot away. Luckily the groups next to us weren't loud or annoying so we were able to enjoy our meal. We ordered edamame and gyozas for appetizers, chirashi, beef negimaki, tempura udon, a dragon roll and a couple of other specialty rolls. The edamame was nicely salted and the gyozas were tasty making me wish we ordered more. The broth in the tempura udon was too salty so I would skip that next time. The beef negimaki was flavorful. I was glad we got the dinner portion to share. The fish in my chirashi was fresh and plentiful. I've been to the other locations and the sushi at Kotobuki never disappoints. The only complaints I have at this location is the seating arrangements and the timing of when our dragon roll came out. Not sure what the issue was but it didn't come out until we were halfway done with the rest of the food. read more

This past weekend, my parents placed an order online for pickup at around dinner time. Despite receiving a notification that their order was ready, they had to wait at the restaurant for an extra HOUR, which is absolutely unacceptable considering they were notified. When they finally did receive their food, the quality of the rolls was abysmal. They ordered a Dragon Roll (see pictured; bottom). The eel seemed like it was the minimal scrapped leftovers they had lying around-- some parts of the roll didn't even have any eel. The rice was undercooked and was rough to chew that they didn't even both finishing it. And, as if that wasn't enough, the roll was so lazily rolled that it was falling apart in the box before they even picked it up. Definitely do NOT recommend ordering from here. If you're craving sushi, go somewhere else. read more

This place is so unassuming on the outside-- it's nestled in a shopping center next to a grocery store, but it's always bustling (during lunch or dinner) and the sushi is always super duper fresh. Recently I sat at the sushi bar counter, which I'd never done before, but it was super fun. The sushi chefs are friendly and personable - and sitting watching them expertly slice & assemble beautiful sushi plates and salads was a lot of fun! We shared a bunch of stuff-- everything was super fresh. The favorites: the salmon avocado salad, the sashimi deluxe plate, the coquette roll & Cinderella roll. The edamame portion is gigantic. The miso soup is yum. Honestly, I've been to this place a bunch and I don't think I've ever had a bad meal. I highly recommend this spot! The food, service & ambiance are all really incredible. I eat way more often at kotobuki of Babylon, but was ordering delivery yesterday for lunch through Uber Eats (yes, I know, third party ordering isn't the way to go, but I'm in quarantine for a few days and was really craving sushi) and although I could've ordered from Babylon I decided to opt for Hauppauge because for some reason Babylon doesn't offer the lunch menu on Uber Eats...ok, so now that's out of the way...I ordered the sashimi lunch (10pc of fish, a UFO roll, and salmon carppacio), the grinch roll, and the rainbow roll with spicy tuna. I always tell them I would like tina, yellowtail, salmon, fluke (and sometimes striped bass) only for sashimi and got exactly that. The fish was very fresh and tasted really good. The salmon carppacio could've had more flavor (based on the one I get in Babylon) and the Tuna wasn't as red as it usually is (again based on Babylon)...it was more of a medium rose color not that beautiful deep red I'm used to, but still tasted good. In the notes I requested my miso soup and house salad with dressing on the side (because lunch ALWAYS comes with those items) and to my surprise I didn't receive either one, but instead a small container of white rice...I actually ate the salad mix and daicon mixed with some rice and my own ginger dressing for a salad! The grinch roll was delicious! The fish was great and the super creamy avocado was unbeatable...love the sprinkle of cayenne over it for the final touch of heat. And the spicy tuna rainbow roll was very good as well. I also requested extra Wasabi (got that) and extra soy sauce to which they sent me 2 plastic ramekins...that slightly annoyed me being I had 10 pcs of sashimi and 20 pcs of rolls (2 full rolls and a half order of the UFO), but thankfully I had enough. It's not that I use so much but that I like to have different levels of heat with the Wasabi (I make one with a lot, one with less, and I leave one plain). So while the food was still good, it wasn't as good as their sister restaurant in Babylon (which I have heard before), they ignored my simple request for extra soy (not even a spicy mayo or a ponzu but a plain old soy sauce), and forgot or don't offer (and if that is the case they could've reached out to let me know because I probably would've added a soup and salad to the order as I was looking forward to them) the standard soup and salad that comes with ordering from the lunch menu...that kind of shows me a lack in customer service, so unfortunately 3 stars. read more

The fish was melt in my mouth and the balance of fish and rice was just the way right. It was coming with avocado roll but it wasn't that good. Miso soup was excellent!!! I tasted the dashi broth and seaweed and tofu were delicious. It reminds me of my hometown. I was sad because it was in tiny container. Post COVID-19 review: this restaurant is a good example of what it takes to survive in a post-COVID shutdown world. The phone doesn't stop ringing from to-go orders. Customers are properly social distanced inside and now at their NEW outdoor seating. I'm not sure if he's the manager or (maybe?) part owner? But Ari delivers each and every time giving you a positive experience with each dine in. Kotobuki is, in my humble opinion, dollar for dollar the best sushi restaurant in America. Nobody offers a better value for the dollar. There is certainly better sushi and cheaper, more plentiful sushi, but none offers the combination like Kotobuki. Order the sushi for 2 or 3 (unless you are starved, generally advisable to order one level below your Party size- the order for 2 is big enough for a party of 3.) I think all of these 5 star raters are probably going to form a lynch mob and come after me but I have to say, I'm not a big fan of this restaurant. It was crowded on a Friday at around 7, I expected that from reading the other reviews. We didn't wait long because there was room at the bar. The waitress came and took our order but I was thinking that we would be ordering from the sushi chef, nope, they were way too busy and working as fast as humanly possible. They gave us free spicy noodle thing and a round fish stick thing (seriously it tasted like one of those fish sticks that kids eat) the waitress was quick and to the point, the food took on the longish side to come and my friends food came way before mine did. Here's the food part: I had some fried chicken appetizer and grilled squid. They were both pretty good, not wonderful, just good. I had a roll with crab meat inside, tuna and avocado on the outside. I liked it but quite honestly the tuna was not that good. On the other hand the salmon skin hand roll was very good, it was the only thing I could say that was above average.
