The fish is always fresh and the sushi for two is a very good sized portion with a few rolls, some sashimi, and some sushi. The fish in this sushi for two includes standard types of fish, tuna, salmon, etc... but still very fresh. Their cucumber rolls are to die for. Does anybody else notice that the quality here is slipping? This was my favorite sushi place for a long time. A few months ago I noticed that the ika maru sauce was watered down and the salmon skin was cold and leathery. I tried again last month and it went from bad to worse. I don't know if the kitchen staff had changed but I don't know if I'll go back anytime soon. I do hope they improve because the sushi was always fresh and prepared well, and the ika maru was the best I'd had. They seem to be busy, and everyone can have a bad night, but twice in a row worried me. If anyone from the restaurant reads this please fix theses issues because I'd like to put Kotobuki back in my restaurant rotation. read more

I love japanese food and if it wasnt for the mercury, i would eat sushi everyday. Best smoked salmon sushi i have ever had. Melts in your mouth and you can taste the smoke. Delicious! They taunt you with the menu by making you feel like an "amatuer" if you order sushi from certain sections but i do tend to shy away from The artsy sushi roll. We went out with another couple so we needed a table for 4. The wait was about 30 minutes, which was not bad for a Friday night. The food was delicious, we ordered the lobster salad appetizer, it was good but it did have a hint of wasabi which I was not expecting. The other app that we had was the K sliders. I didn't personally have them but others said they were great. For our dinners we ordered sushi for 2, which could really be for 3 and some other rolls. All was great!!! The reason I did not give them a 5 was due to the fact that we were seated at the first table and we basically froze our asses off the entire meal. When we were waiting I jokingly said to my friend how it would suck to have to sit there and of course we did we get seated... I actually kept my winter ski jacket on the entire meal. My hands and feet were like icicles. No one from the restaurant ever came over to say a word about how cold it was. Every time someone came in or went out it was like an arctic breeze came through. Thought this place had some fresh and tasteful sushi. Went her on a Saturday night with my girlfriend. Had to wait a bit to get a table, but that expected on a Saturday. Got seated and ordered some good cocktails. My girlfriend loved her shrimp tempura and veggie roll. I enjoyed some specialty rolls. Also loved the ice cream at the end. This is my go to sushi spot! Everything is always fresh. For appetizers the sautéed oysters , shrimp gogo and the tuna avacado with spicy mayo are amazing! The tuna tataki is seared very well. The Grinch, spicy mayo roll and philadelphia roll are also great. Can not go wrong with desserts either. Most of the servers are attentive and prompt. read more

I am at kotobuki right now. The service and food is always impeccable. My siblings have taken me here for a pre birthday dinner. The only thing that keeps me from giving a 5 star review is that the seating area is cramped and if you are sitting near really loud people (which is happening again for a second non consecutive time) you are basically screwed. Currently, we have dad and two preteens sitting behind me. Dad occasionally reminds the kids "inside voices" but they aren't having any of it. This is a great mid-size sushi spot! The few times I've been here I have been very satisfied with the service and quality of the food. The ambiance has low light and all wooden fixtures with Japanese styling throughout. There are two table sections and a large sushi bar with probably 10-12 seats and 3-4 sushi chefs. The menu features traditional sushi options with your typical rolls that you see in the US featuring cream cheese, sauces, and 'crunchy' offerings, but they also feature neat nuanced dishes like salmon 'carpaccio' or rolls wrapped in daikon instead of soy or seaweed. The last time my girlfriend and I went, I ordered one of the sashimi dinners that included a daikon roll and the carpaccio, and my girlfriend ordered 2 specialty rolls. I am a big sashimi guy, and usually I need to supplement the entrees with a few more pieces, but not this time. The sashimi pieces were all large and fresh, and I was very pleased with the daikon roll. Service was mostly good. Waiter forgot one piece of my meal that was plated separately, but other than that no issues. Prices are slightly higher than your typical sushi place, but I think it's acceptable for this restaurant. Would recommend. read more

My favorite sushi spot! The fish is so fresh they don't need to dress it up with special sauces. I always bring someone along and get the sushi and sashimi for two. The Babylon location has great service but gets quite crowded and very loud. Well all I can say is thank God that my boyfriend had gotten a gift card for this place. The food was horrible and the service was so so. Everything is over priced and poor made. I wouldn't recommend this place to my enemies, I ordered seafood teriyaki. The lobster in it was beyond over cooked. You could have bounced it off the wall and the shrimp were limp and tasteless. ATTENTION ALL KOTOBUKI LOVERS: We called Kotobuki , spoke to the manager there because we needed to ask if they had seating (cause you wait so long for a table on a Saturday night). We explained to the manager that we were planning on eating there that evening and needed a chair for our friend who had requested to go there and he is suffering from colon cancer and cannot stand because of extreme pain he has all the time. Manager stated they had no seating for waiting patrons and he could wait outside in the car and they would call us when the table was ready. We then asked if they could make an exception and hold a table for him. This is a rare time that he could go out! He said no! No exceptions! I cannot tell you all how mad I was. Truly, I would not have gone there, however, he wanted to go. We did not tell him the conversation I had with the manager. He does not need any bull in his life at this time. He did wait in the car and when the table was ready we called him and he came in. Why couldn't they provide a chair in their entrance as they had in the past so he could feel NORMAL for one evening! The restaurant has plenty! Where is the compassion? Not there! I will NOT give Kotobuki one more cent of my money. Please let's show Kotobuki the same compassion they gave my friend. So thankful that my best friend introduced me to this place! Probably one of my top three favorite sushi places in all of Long Island. It's a really quaint restaurant and adorable designed. Most of the staff is very friendly and always smiling, the servers check in frequently and are very helpful. However, the hostess usually acts confused each time I come here and ask for a table. "Table for 2?? *Deer in headlights look* Oh...um...hmm..." ????!!!! Besides that, excellent service. The miso soup and clear soup are delicious and on point. LOVE the green salad here because the ginger dressing is just so perfect for the salad and tastes amazing! Any of the sushi I have had here has always been great, I usually stick to California Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll no matter where I go, but very decent sushi here. My absolute favorite meal here is the seafood terriyaki...I'm in love! DELICIOUS and GENEROUS portions of scallops, shrimp, lobster tails and vegetables tossed in a terriyaki sauce, it's amazing. The lobster meat is succulent and so flavorful. Of course, anything you get here, should be paired with the PLUM SAKI WINE! I usually hate saki, and I can't get enough of this wine! Apparently Babylon is a hopping place to be! My boyfriend, sister, and her friends arrived for a dinner on a Friday night and had to wait for over an hour at the bar next door until they called us to say our seats were ready. The town was crawling with people scurrying from one activity to the next. When we went back to Kotobuki, the quick paced town outside quietly faded into the far distance while we were able to order one dish after the next. I can't even remember all of the amazing dishes we ordered. Honestly, my favorite 2 dishes were the shrimp go-go and the clear soup. Everything else was pretty great too but these 2 were the belles of the ball (well, if my mouth was a fancy cotillion this would make a bit more sense). Not sure I would ever wait an hour to go again, and would have loved a little more attentive service (I guess they were oober busy?), but in the meanwhile I definitely enjoyed the food! I guess I will have to come back to check out whether there's any improvement in the service :-) read more

I'm sorry but all these great reviews are mind-boggling! The food, wait staff and overall experience was just plain bad. The one good part was that we were seated right away (joke bc we were the first ones there on a Sunday night). We started off with grilled squid and edema me for apps. The squid was bland and luke warm. The edema me was freezer burned and had table salt on the top. Never had it without the course salt and it made a huge difference. We shoulda known that if they can mess up edema me, we had no shot at a good entree. My wife had chirashi and didn't taste fresh at all and the yellow fin was inedible. I had 3 rolls. An eel avocado roll that was tough and tasted like it was in the frig for a week, a spider roll (soft shell crab) that had way too much fried batter on it and had zero taste, and a spicy girl roll (spicy salmon, yellowfin, avocado in the middle, with spicy tuna on top) I wish I had my phone with me to take a pic because this roll LOOKED disgusting, and TASTED even worse! The spicy tuna was A BROWN shade, the roll was sloppily rolled, everything looked like it was mushed together....it was just plain bad. Oh, and nothing spicy about it! Little fountain sodas were $2.50 each, including refills, the wait staff was slowwwwwwww, and the menus looked like ancient artifacts, meaning if you didn't handle with care, they would have fallen apart. My former favorite sushi joint Xaga had great food but treated us very poorly (see my past review) and so we've been on a search for our new favorite spot. Everything at this place reminded me of my grandmother's storage closet....old, dark and moth ball smelling. Definitely not a fan. read more

This place is riding on its old reputation. Nowadays, the sushi is pre-cut (a big no-no) from the prep kitchen. While many of the dishes are tasty, there is minimal creativity going on. Someone needs to tell these people that the objective of a sushi chef should not be to see just how many different kinds of fish you can bundle together in a nori roll. If you want a real Japanese experience (and without the cold-shoulder staff), you'd do better at Kurafune in Commack. They've been doing it right for about 30 years. read more
