Back in the 80's and 90's "Krabby" Dick Kirk was an over the road owner operator of an 18 wheeler. He traveled through the southern states of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Louisiana. As he traveled throughout the South he always stopped at the numerous Southern BBQ restaurants whenever possible, and he found Southern BBQ had a distinctive flavor that was different from anything found in the local area. In the village of Camillus, there was a huge building in disrepair. Kirk decided to buy it, and spent nearly 3 years jacking floors, digging out the basement, rewiring, and reroofing and finally opened Krabby Kirks Saloon in January 2011. The inside of the absolutely huge restaurant now boasts timber framing, mounted animal trophies from animals Kirk hunted himself in Wyoming, and TVs airing sporting events. There's also a small bakery, upper deck with Tiki Bar and an ice cream store. The boys and I love trying different BBQ places in the area, seeing as we're not huge fans of the only one that gets any love in this city, so when I found Krabby Kirks, we decided to give it a try. We went for lunch on a Saturday, and were able to sit right away, as there were only a few tables sat at the time. We got some fried green tomatoes and an order of what they call Pig in a Poke...jalapenos stuffed with pulled pork, cheddar cheese and wrapped in bacon, served with a chipotle sauce for dipping. Both my buddies went with a pulled pork sandwich for their entrees, while I chose the Fat Allen sandwich, a sandwich of pulled pork, brisket, jalapenos, cheddar cheese, cole slaw and their BBQ sauce. Our appetizers were brought and were very good. The fried green tomatos were fried crisp and had a tasty zesty sauce for dipping. The Pig in a Poke appetizer was also very good. The pulled pork inside the jalapenos worked great together, and they definitely had a spicy kick to them. I only wish the bacon on the outside was done more, as a lot of it was still uncooked and raw. Our main dishes came and everything was great. Kirks smoke all their own meats, including brisket, ribs, corned beef, and pastrami and make all their other sides including baked beans and all the rubs and sauces. The sandwiches were all absolutely huge and we had to use knives and forks to eat them. The meats on them were extremely flavorful and tender. We weren't even able to completely finish the sandwiches, along with our sides, which were also very good. Our server was friendly, and the prices were comparable to other BBQ joints. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with a side of coleslaw, and I didn't get anything close to that. I think I received something called the super green bowl? I don't know what the hell I got but it looked like somebody ground up wilted lettuce and snot. It was extremely disgusting. I took a picture of what was advertised on the menu. I will never go back! Ordered here again after many dissapoinments only for another. Order : Pizza & smoked wings to go and a beer to drink during the wait. Pizza : banana peppers, pepperoni, and sausage. Not a bad pie but not a good one. Smoked wings : so very very very very small. Absoloulty no smoke flavor. Basically feel as if I was stolen from by paying for this item. Beer as I wait : very friendly and helpful bar tenders. The beer was sour.....again... the southern teir ipa on tap was one in a long line of sour or off tasting beers that I have had from this establishment. Just don't go here, spare yourself. We frequently walk by and the smell in the air roped me in....for weeks I smelled it and my stomach would growl. We finally decided we could not resist any more!! I wish we had maintained the willpower we exercised for weeks! Let me say that it was not bad, just not great. We tried a sampler platter. I liked the brisket best, by far. My hubby liked the ribs and chicken. I felt the smoke taste was too overbearing. The cornbread was dry & had an off taste. Are beans supposed to be in baked beans? The beans were pretty good but I would have liked more beans and less sauce. I don't think it is worth a return visit, though my husband disagrees. read more

When deciding where to meet another family for dinner, Krabby Kirk's came up. I mentioned we had never been, but heard good things about it. We ate on a Saturday night and had an excellent meal outside on the deck. It was nice to be outside in the middle of October since CNY weather is so unpredictable. The waitress was very attentive and kept checking on us to make sure the kids had everything they needed. I had the special, Sauerbraten, which was amazing and the egg noodles were moist and golden crispy at the same time, I believe it was a combination of butter and the delicious gravy! I can't speak to the other meals that were ordered off the menu, because no one would share and there were no left overs! There is one thing the owner of Krabby Kirks got right - the name. This man should not be in the service industry - customer service is definitely not a priority to him! Imagine what it would be like taking your son out to lunch supporting a local restaurant; your son took the first bite of his cheese burger & says Dad I can't eat this. Then you take a bite of your Philly cheesesteak and know you can't eat that. Both meals are extremely over cooked. You say something to your server, then the owner comes over and starts to argue with you that the meals are cooked as they should be. He is a business owner in a service industry and instead of offering to remake the meals yells & is confrontational with his customer and his young son. We are extremely picky about our BBQ and this place absolutely hands down has the best BBQ we have ever tasted in Onondaga County. What a great homey feel to this bar/restaurant. We had a lovely waitress and we even got a chance to talk to the owner who has traveled the country trying to find great bbq recipes. We started with the stuffed jalapenos - not too spicy - filled with cheese and pork. A great starter for what was going to be an amazing meal. I had the two way platter - chicken that was bbq'd and smoked and still was juicy enough to eat with my hands. The other half was the pork ribs. OMG my mouth is watering with how smokey and delicious these ribs were. Cooked perfectly with the right amount of pork on the bones. Yummy. But for me the star of the show was the sides. They have an N'awlins rice and beans that has sausage and red beans and rice at the bottom that I kept wishing that this was my main course. So perfectly N'awlins style - this is the real deal and not out of a can! The corn bread was sweet on top and a little bit crumbly - just like mama made it - if your mama lived in the south of course. Lastly if you had room for desserts wowsa the carrot cake was gigantic! My son chose the cheesecake and we shared it. A perfect end to a perfect night. Make the trip from Costco - it's just 5 minutes down the road to Camillus and enjoy some down home cookin. I have been wanting to try Krabby Kirk's for quite a while now and we finally went this past week. We were hoping for a quick meal and at first the place seemed promising. We ordered drinks, appetizers, and entrees. The appetizers came almost immediately but they were disappointing. We ordered the Memphis Style Nachos which consisted of stale chips smothered in cheap nacho cheese from a can and very watery pico de gallo along with some pieces of just okay pulled pork. Our table also shared an order of the "Smoked Wings" which I am positive were not smoked, and were the tiniest wings I have ever seen. So tiny that we had difficulty holding them. Neither appetizer looked or tasted that appealing and they were only luke warm. I mentioned that we came for a quick meal, and since the appetizers came so quick I though we would have no problem. Long story short, we waited over an hour from the time our apps came, to the time our entrees arrived. During that time, the nice but very new waitress did not stop at our table. We had to bring our beer glasses to the bar in order to get another drink. The place was pretty empty when we first arrived but a few table filled in while we were waiting. Absolutely every table as well as take out orders that came in after we were seated were filled before we received our food. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!!!! When asked, the waitress' response was that they only had one cook tonight. Well that one cook is clearly making everyone elses' food just fine. Our food finally arrived and again huge disappointment. I ordered the Cajun Catfish dinner which was again barely even warm. The BBQ beans were the weirdest beans I have ever had, the corn bread was the tiniest little dried out brown square of bread ever, and finally the so called "creamy mac & cheese" looked as if it had been scraped out of a left over pan and reheated and was again dry. It did taste homemade, but when it is described as creamy, i expect a flowing sauce of cheese smothered on some pasta! The other entrees were the Sicy Fat Alan... just okay, a messy and wimpy looking sandwich as well as the The Beef Brisket Bomber... again just okay and barely even warm. Besides the food errors, our waitress was polite but very allusive and couldn't answer and questions about the menu that we had. Also her response to delay in our food was less than acceptable. It seems as if she clearly never put our ticket in and blamed the cook instead of owning up to her mistake. She avoided us after and had to be tracked down for additional drinks and the bill. She did credit us a couple beers, but in my opinion that wasn't a suitable correction. I am not sure if we will ever attempt eating here again. I had high hopes but good thing we have Mo's Pit BBQ to enjoy instead. Never had a bad meal there and always great service! read more

I was passing through the area and happened upon this cozy looking place. I'm also a sucker for good BBQ. I was with a group so we were fortunate enough to try a lot of different items. We started with the smoked wings and stuffed jalapeños. Both were a great way to start off a meal. For the main course we shared around the pulled pork sandwich, BBQ chicken, brisket and ribs. All were perfectly slow smoked with excellent depth of flavor. The chicken was tender and moist and the ribs had that gorgeous pink smoke ring. For sides we had cornbread, coleslaw, baked beans, French fries and Mac and cheese. All were terrific. We washed this down with some great tap beer. If I ever pass through again, I'll be back. read more

I took my boys there tonight. They had burgers which were fine. I had the Cajun catfish. The waitress was pleasant, did a nice job. I asked how the cat fish was. She said some people said it was too salty, but others liked it. Said they served a lot of it. Salty! ! Wow! I never tasted anything as salty as this. The breading was intensely salty, so much so that it was inedible. I removed the breading and picked on the fish which was still salty, but just barely edible. Worst piece of fish I ever had! Stay away from that dish. Beyond that, I like the bar area and atmosphere. Might try again, but will NEVER have the cat fish! read more

Krabby Kirks is easily passed when driving through the village of Camillus, but it shouldn't be overlooked. Their barbeque is easily competitive with the likes of Dinosaur. The restaurant features a bar, 2 different dining rooms off the bar, and an upstairs where bands play. The brisket is to die for. The only reason this is a 4 star is the crepy icecream parlor that is attached to one of the dining rooms. Yikes read more

I was taking a friend to dinner last Friday and wanted BBQ but knew the Gold Standard (Dinosaur) would be mobbed so we tried this joint. What a disappointment. While the facility and service were good.. the food was terrible. The fried green tomatoes were practically raw.. The cornbread was dry and hard as a rock... The collard greens were also almost raw..... The beans were were the worst ever and also near raw... I tried a trio with pulled pork, brisket and ribs.... The pork was good but had chunks of fat in it that were far too large... The brisket was decent but dry.... The ribs were burned and so tough I couldn't eat them. I mentioned it to the server, who was a peach throughout this mess, and she brought another small rack. Those were not burned but were so dry and tough I refused to eat them. She watched me try to pull some meat off the bone with my fork which was impossible. I suggest that the cooks and owners try Dinosaur or Lizard to see how to do BBQ correctly. Or Foodnetwork has Pitmasters... I will not return here ever. No offset of any kind on the bill for the debacle. Oh.. and the place was not busy.. big surprise. read more

They have great pulled pork omelets! It's a Nice little hole in the wall restaurant in the small village of Camillus.

As a Chef i do not like seeing management that is not good... Old women, and i would guess if its not the owners mother he is sleeping with her... walking around amorously, then had the audacity to bark at a server about checking the side room and serving guests there... BEST PART side room had a sign saying reserved... that the manager spun around with out alerting her staff........ COME"ON.... Now on to the review.... Server was wearing a SU Shirt and I loved it... support our hometown pride!!! She actually was the only one not wearing the pink shirt so i liked the idea of being able to spot her in the sea of pink on the busy Saturday 6PM Crowd... She was sweet, attentive, focused... In my career of Cruise Liners & Fine Dine i tend to think every server needs to be like a fine dine one... She is the first in a long time that i felt was spot on... I originally reviewed this restaurant in 2011 after my first visit. I gave it very high marks. In subsequent years I have returned at least once, usually twice each summer. Although the quality has been a trifle less consistent than it was on my first visit, it still continued to deliver what I think is decent quality barbecue for a good price. I went this evening for what I expected would be my first visit of the summer - it is the last time I will ever go to this restaurant. Our server had only been there for a few days, but she was very energetic, cheerful, and provided good service. We ordered hot chicken wings to share, my friend ordered a pulled pork and ribs sampler, and I ordered a half rack of ribs. The chicken wings were the scrawniest that I've ever seen. They weren't smoked as they had been before, the hot sauce wasn't as hot as it had been previously, and there were just three really scrawny stalks of celery (included only when we requested them.) Not all of the wings were fully cooked to a crispy state, as one would expect them to be. When the entrées arrived things went even further downhill. I asked the waitress if she was still planning to bring the cornbread - included with the meal - when she pointed to a small brown square on the plate. Unlike the corn bread that we had here previously, which was yellow, moist, had a little bit of a jalapeño kick, and was a generous serving, this was a small brown dried out square that was roughly 1 1/2 inches on each side and about 3/4 of an inch thick. Very little taste of corn present. My buddy said that his pulled pork was pretty decent. Both he and I agreed that the ribs were the worst we have ever tasted. They had a weird almost watery consistency to the meat that was really soft and overcooked, there was a very substantial amount of fat underneath the surface that had mit been cooked off, they weren't close to as meaty as they had been in the past, and there was almost no smoke flavor. They were, without question, the worst ribs that I have ever had in a restaurant - anytime, anywhere, ever. When the server and one of the kitchen employees passed by our table at various times and asked us how our meal was, we shared our observations with them in a very courteous way. We made it clear that we'd had excellent experiences at this restaurant on prior occasions and were shocked at how much things had changed. They seemed apologetic, but no explanation or defense was offered. I want to stress that I previously gave this restaurant very high marks - if you look at my past review you will see that to be the case. I have no bone to pick with this restaurant and know nothing about the folks who operate it, but I feel obligated to share this incredibly negative food experience with anyone who might consider going there. It's really unfortunate - I'm not a fan of Dinosaur Barbecue (which, despite its many faults, is vastly superior to what Krabby Kirk's is now serving.) I also don't like driving all the way down to Homer New York to get takeout from Bob's barbecue, but that may be my only choice moving forward. read more

Moved up here from Florida recently and have been hunting for good BBQ since I got here in September. Finally found it! The Tennessee Trio with Texas brisket did not disappoint at all nor did the sides. Most BBQ joints I've tried around here have been lacking on the smoke and BBQ sauce but this place nailed it on the head with a nice smoke ring on the brisket and ribs and a thin, but tasty, BBQ sauce. My only complaint was the extremely lackluster corn bread, dry and inedible to me (wish they had cheddar jalapeno cornbread so much!) but in their defense I was the last order before the kitchen closed maybe next time earlier it will be more fresh. read more

Opened in Jan., it's an inviting, nicely renovated (from 2 shops?) saloon with a front porch, a comfortable back deck with a true smokehouse next to it. It's a nice menu of their own smoked meats in a decent variety of sandwiches and salads, plus, burgers, finger foods and 10 homemade sides". The Apple Smoked BLT - $7.99 (chose light rye) had plenty of good filings, including their crispy, thicker bacon. Comes with their well-done, homemade potato chips. Added a side of Collard Greens $1.79, which were tender with a tinge of unidentifiable tang. Next, a Beef Brisket Bomber $9.29. Slices of brisket, topped with their smoked bacon, cheddar, sautéed mushrooms and BBQ sauce on a good Kaiser roll. Generally good, but half of the bites contained a lot of fat! We had heard about great things about Krabby Kirks and we were keen to try their in house made corned beef and pastrami. We went for dinner this evening, only to discover that they don't serve their highly touted corned beef or pastrami during dinner, that is for lunch only. A little disappointed in that, my husband ordered the smoked brisket platter with red beans/rice and coleslaw. I ordered the 1/4 chicken platter with two sides, I chose collard greens (my absolute favorite veggie) and I wanted a house salad, however, I was told that house salads are only available during lunch as well. What? Seriously? No house salad for dinner but you do offer it for lunch? Ok, whatever....I ended up ordering two sides of collard greens. When our food arrived, my chicken platter was slathered in BBQ sauce. The description said brined and smoked, but no mention of BBQ sauce ~ I really dislike BBQ chicken and would not have ordered it if I had known. The collard greens were inedible...very undercooked and with a hot/salty flavor. Hubby and I ended up switching meals as I was completely dissatisfied with mine. The brisket was just ok and the red beans/rice were good. Not red beans, but rather baked beans on top of a very very tiny amount of rice. Typical beans and rice dishes are more rice than beans....I asked for some more rice and once it was received, it was the highlight of the meal. When we received the bill, I was shocked to discover that the waitress had charged an additional $1.79 for the rice. We ended up leaving almost all of our food on the plates, the waitress was surly and fairly unhelpful. If I go again it will only be for lunch, save yourself some headache and heartburn and don't bother with Krabby Kirks. read more

I've been here several times, the food is pretty good. The corn on the cob wasn't the greatest as it was small, not really "meaty". The sandwiches taste pretty good, and the Mac n cheese is to die for. As for the baked beans, they were ok. Not may favorite. The "spicy fat Alan" is a pretty good sandwich, great size. When we went the order got screwed up several times and the brisket was so dry my husband literally choked. We went here one random Saturday afternoon after my husband said that this place used to be amazing when he went many years ago. I ordered the fried catfish plate and he ordered some BBQ dish with ribs, pork, etc.. The atmosphere of this place is great, the waitress was extremely nice. The food, however, was absolutely awful. As someone mentioned before me, the catfish was unbearably salty. I wasn't impressed. The mac&cheese was too oily and mushy, and did not taste anything like cheese. The tomato cucumber salad tasted like it was made with old tomatoes that were almost rotten. The cornbread was probably the best thing on the plate. My husbands dish was worse. The meat was dried out and tasteless, reminded me of cardboard. It was actually so bad we had to say something because we just couldn't fathom paying 23 bucks for his inedible food.. (This was the first time we have ever done that & we felt bad having to be "those people") We did talk to the manager and again, the waitress was great. I would not ever go back, though... Went there for lunch today and was very disappointed. The waitress was very good but not the food. My hot pastrami was fair...had to ask for mustard as they brought out a cup of something that didn't really resemble mustard. Salt potatoes were a real bust. No salt, had to ask for butter. Isn't salt and butter something u expect when u order salt potatoes in central NY. I wouldn't head back there. My two dining companions told me I bombed out on my suggestion of going there after a morning at the zoo. read more

This is a place that cares deeply about their food and it shows. The menu is creative but the staples (ribs, brisket, pulled pork) are fantastic. Not that the comparison is necessary but I thought the ribs were as good if not better than dinosaur BBQ. Have already been back twice since my initial visit! Love it! P.s. Great service. The bartenders and waitstaff are fantastic. The food is good but I still have lots I want to try. Checked out the smoker in the back it's legit, I learned to weld by building smokers, this thing is a beast. I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant. Living in the Camillus area for most of my life, and now living in South Florida, I have heard a lot of positive things about this restaurant, and of course I was excited to see something new and fun "stick around" in the village of Camillus (those who live there know what I'm talking about...). Anyway, the atmosphere "could" be good. And the food "could" be good. But, well, it's not. We sat on the back patio, and although the front of the place looks nice, as you walk to the back it just starts looking less and less clean and inviting. First beer we ordered was extremely flat, so we nicely requested something different. Took about 20 minutes for our new pints to come out (it was a NOT busy Tues evening). The our food comes out and yuck. I think the rolls were sitting out for about a week they were so hard and chewy. My bf's BBQ was drier than dry, and the beans were even drier than that. I almost took a picture of them they were so unappetizing, so we requested a different side (which ended up still being the beans but clearly a new fresh batch). I ordered a burger, that came out looking like a burnt hockey puck on an old dry roll. And my french fries were clearly cooked about 1-2 hours prior to being served. The server was very nice, and knew we were not happy (because she asked us several times if we were ok), but seeing we already complained about both the beer and the beans we were too shy to say anything else. This place was absolutely disgusting. The food was cold and the flavor wasn't even good. I ordered the platter that included ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. Not one of the meats were warm and none had a pleasing taste. My wife's chicken we named poop chicken because it tastes as such. The corn bread was dry and stale. The Mac and cheese was cold and poorly seasoned. The waitress had no idea about anything on the menu, and couldn't answer any questions. Avoid at all costs. The place looked nice but this BBQ is as extinct as the rest if the choices in the area. read more
