That morning was the very first time I ever had a Kouign-Amann (or "Queen Amann" as my phone loves to autocorrect it, which honestly fits because it's royalty ), and it completely ruined me for all others. It set an impossibly high standard for every single one I've tried since! The flaky, buttery, caramelized layers were pure perfection. We didn't get a chance to try their savory menu offerings, but I can absolutely speak for the pastries - the others we tried were very good too, but that Kouign-Amann completely topped it off. We haven't been back since that trip, but I cannot wait to check them out again next time we visit Maui. If you're doing the early morning Haleakalā run, this is an absolute must-stop!

Waiting for almost 30 minutes. * Our order getting mixed up and handed to the wrong person * Confusion about what muffins were available... okay fine, I'll take a blueberry muffin. Then halfway through eating it, I found a hair baked into it * Ordering potatoes without onions because of an allergy, having it made wrong twice, and needing it redone * Noticing the restaurant itself looked like it could use a deep cleaning, including ceiling fans with layers of dust And maybe this was just an off day, but the staff vibe felt... off too. Disconnected. Kind of cliquey. Like everyone seemed more interested in talking amongst themselves than serving guests. The warm, welcoming feeling Grandmas always had just didn't feel like it was there today. As a customer, I honestly felt like I was intruding or inconveniencing the staff just by being there, and that's a really strange feeling in a place we've loved for so long. That's honestly the part that made me the most disappointed. We've loved Grandmas for years, which is why this was tough. Instead of the Garlic Prawn Pizza, we received a different shrimp entree, which looked fantastic...but it wasn't what we ordered. They apologized and went to prepare the pizza. The food was delicious, and portions were big, so we definitely had leftovers. Overall, I am so glad we finally made it to Kula Lodge. Unfortunately, just 3 weeks after our visit, Kula Lodge suffered from a restaurant fire. I am absolutely positive they will re-open again.
