Tonight was our first time at Kulture and it did NOT disappoint. The ambiance is laid back with great music playing overhead. We tried 4 things from the bar bites menu and we both tried the Bit-o-Honey cocktail. EVERY single thing was delicious. The meatloaf meatballs are phenomenal, and the Mac and cheese tasted like the fancy kind your mom makes when company is coming over. Comfort foods in small sizes meant for sampling. The prices are also very reasonable. Oh, and they validate parking at the Tower attached to the building. Everyone was friendly, we were seated quickly, and our food came out in a decent time. It was a Friday night and there was a nice jazz band playing. I have one concern and that is the ladies bathroom. If u are going to win me over please! please! do over the bathroom. It's pretty small but lack great decor and the deodorizers and candles. The mirrors look like clear glass with black paint splashed on them. Enjoyed my experience at Kulture. Met a friend for a late happy hour. Drinks were good, I had the Pomegranate Mojito... Yum!! The food was also good, I had deviled eggs and collard purses. Once I ordered I relived I didn't have any meat. The rest was still filling and I enjoyed it. I would definitely return. I didn't thieve it 5 stars because I paid $20 for parking across the street. The food and service is great. This place is located downtown, but the owner provides two hour free parking in the garage, which is perfect. The place is always packed, but we always managed to be seated. The food is really good. I typically get the oxtail ragout and it is amazing. I'm not a cabbage fan, but the owner sent a cabbage wedge dish to our table complimentary on our last visit, and it was amazing. It's nice to see a black owned business thriving in Downtown Houston. Generally, when an appetizer is order the turn around is quick unfortunately that was not the case for us! We waited almost 25 minutes for deviled eggs that endured more salt that required. 10 minutes after our order was taken for our Appetizer we placed an order for our main course. Im currently waiting on my food now...ironic, huh? I wont even bother discussing the food because the wait is so long who cares how the food taste you will be eating because of starvation. Restaurant tself was lively, modern, clean and hip. There was a live band, great vibe, and sharp decor. Our waiter Torrin was also lively, knowledgeable and passionate about Kulture, their vision, and their food. He gave us a little bit of history on the restaurant, whiskey, and also the chef. He recommended the collard green appetizer and it was amazing!! We also got the popcorn with cracklins followed by mac n cheese, shrimp and grits, riblets , and collard green purses. Every dish was delicious and full of flavor. Yes, a lot of food for two people but we licked the bowls clean! I wish we were able to try every dish on their menu. I will come here again and I want Kulture to be successful. The food is very good, the staff friendly and the space is hip and welcoming. That said, it needs work. In reverse order... The interior design is hard surfaces and warm colors. A live music duo was playing the Saturday night of my visit and while the music was great, the space is what musicians call a "live room". The acoustics made conversation more of a shouting match. The staff seem to lack the experience that the hype and vibe of this place had me expecting. They are kind and attentive but don't have polish. None of the shortcomings I experienced by themselves were awful, but combined made the experience less than it should have been. For example, we were given two different menus, a lunch and dinner. The identifiers for each were so discreet that it took several minutes of confusion to distinguish them. When I ordered iced tea I was delivered a glass of sugar water with a faint walnut hue suggesting a tea bag had passed through it. What southern restaurant serves you tea without first asking "sweet or unsweet, darling?" I wanted unsweet, and got it after more confusion and my cloying palate cleared. Lastly, and of greatest disappointment, our waiter was short on knowledge of how the food was prepared. When asked how the cabbage wedge was made be used the term "I think" in his description. This is an unforgivable sin. A staff that cannot precisely tell you how something is prepared is unacceptable. The food was quite good and I will return to try items left untested. I started with fried okra, which were perfectly and lightly fried. Outstanding! My dining partner and I chose small plates to share rather than entrees. We had the cabbage wedge, riblets, Johnny cakes and collard purses. The flavors were direct and unencumbered by fussiness. However, every item, save the ribs, were missing something that was also absent on the table...salt. In this age of concern over sodium consumption I can forgive a kitchen for underseasoning, but to leave salt off the table deprives the dinner from taking matters into their own hands. The wedge was a unique item and delicious. Served as an entire quarter head it was roasted until soft and caramelized on the surface. The bacon vinaigrette was a slightly sharp and fatty counterpoint to the wedges mild and earthy flavor. The riblets, small chunks of pork ribs that were slow cooked then flash fried for service, were tender and meaty. They came with delicious bread and butter pickles which offset their porkiness. The collard purses were large wilted leaves filled with smoked turkey. This was the most underseasoned item I tried. Great flavor idea, just missing that final boost from proper seasoning. The Johnny cakes were very good and very light. I expected a very dense disc of cornmeal but received a puffy and delicate assortment of silver-dollar sized cakes served with bits of candied bacon and butter. All in all, my experience will have me return, but I hope they buff up things here to the polish I assume they aspire. read more

My oh my! I could not have loved this place any more! We came here in a Sat evening on our way to Sawyer Yard and I'm so glad we did. Nice ambience with live jazz music softly playing in the background. I got my usual dirty martini but slightly disappointed they didn't have blue cheese olives but hey...of course I drank it anyway!
