The Sichuan Spicy Beef was done properly, most restaurants when flash frying the beef end up making the meat either too soggy or hard as a rock. The breading on the beef was light and was done right the first time. The appetizer, the Spicy Beef Tendon was delicious and very authentic to Sichuan standards. You can ask for the house vegetables that they have available we ordered A Choy with a cook of garlic wok style. The bean curd with shredded pork and Chinese celery was done well and seasoned. After a long Football Sunday, we figured some Chinese takeout would really hit the spot. This place did not disappoint. The pork dumplings were juicy and full of flavor and the hot and sour soup really hit the spot as the temperatures are finally starting to drop. Road tripping through and was craving good Chinese and this place was pretty surprisingly good! The only reason I dropped 1 star was the fried rice was not good and to me being a staple in Chinese restaurant it should never be mediocre. It barely had any veggies and did not even seem like it was "fried" rice. Felt like it was just mixed together. Another reason for 1 star lower was their Spicy Schezuan chicken did not have much meat. Waayyy more chili peppers and I understand the dish is suppose to be covered with peppers but there were barely morsels of chicken to share between the hubby and I. Flavor was good not the best but better than average.( lacked a little in the mala aspect). The green beans with pork was delicious and also the house made pork and shrimp dumplings. This is the 2nd time they did this to my order. I guess the food is way too hot and they put it directly to a styrofoam box. I'm guessing they put it there right after they're done cooking it straight from the wok. Created a mess everywhere, food cannot be eaten and I'm 30 mins away from the place. Somehow, all conversations in my office end up at food--things we like, things we hate... and I am so grateful, because that is how I heard about Chou's Kitchen! We got a huge takeout feast of the cucumber with garlic sauce, salad with Green Onion, Cilantro & Jalapeno, szechuan spicy beef, and the cabbage with pork & vermicelli clay pot. The cucumber dish was refreshing, and the salad had so many yummy ingredients (wood ear, bean curd shreds, and the aforementioned cilantro, green onion, and jalapeno) in a fresh dressing. One note is that it has a few szechuan peppercorns, so you get that numbing sensation (which I personally don't particular like, but to each their own!) The spicy beef also had the Szechuan peppercorns, but the beef was crispy and dry, so it was easy for me to pick off peppercorns so I wouldn't get too much of the numbing, while still getting all of the hot! The clay pot dish was absolutely perfect, and reminded me of home. I'll definitely be going back to Chou's sooner rather than later--this time for dumplings!!! read more

Since I moved to Phoenix I have been in search of a place for xiao long bao. Decided to try this while I was in the neighborhood. I did take out. It was easy to order and was ready in 15min or so which gave me enough time to go grab boba milk tea. Overall the food was ok. The xiao long bao tasted good but I thought the dumpling dough was too thick and there was not as much soup. I also got the beef pies which were pretty good. The scallions pancakes were a disappointment. They were dry and didn't have much scallions. And the search continues! Not a bad start tho. read more

Having Chinese food once a week isn't bad for your health, right? Well, ironically or not, the ladyfriend's under the weather, and for us, cold symptoms = "We gotta get won ton soup." Chou's Kitchen is a place we've visited before and thought highly of. It was on an overcast Monday some months ago; we found it on a whim, and it was our first Tempe Chinese food experience (save for a fusion restaurant a few blocks over). The results couldn't have been more excellent: dumplings, noodles, and tofu galore -- a 5-star experience for its time. We've been meaning to return since then, but with all the other places that have demanded our exploration, Chou's has gotten ever distant. Not today. Although we wouldn't be grabbing noodles and dumplings this time around, we ordered a DoorDash delivery of large won ton soup, eggplant with brown sauce, and family style tofu. This is a restaurant review, not a delivery service one, although it must be said that our delivery was swift and friendly. I give Chou's some credit for this, if only because the food was beautifully organized in the bags, which minimized leakage and spills. We hauled the lot to our apartment, unpacking each dish and totally forgetting to take photos. Use your imagination for this one, or until we order it again: the eggplant was delicious. It went well with our steamed rice. The tofu, though we were hoping for a little more fried action (more so me, I'm not under the weather!), completed a flavorful ensemble with the eggplant. Only downside was the occasional black bean I had to pick out from the dish; sorry, I can overlook the sauce, but actual black beans (or any beans except the green string variety), are a no-go for me. Long story. As for the won ton soup, it wasn't bad. The won tons were doughier than I would have preferred, and we noticed that some were more concentrated with salt than others (quick mixing maybe?). The broth had a nice, somewhat roasted flavor about it, which I didn't mind. Extraordinary though it may be, I was hoping for more veggies. For me, a victorious won ton soup will have mushrooms, carrots, and bok choy without skimping on the won ton ratio. Nonetheless, we were still pleased with the soup, although we will keep an eye out for alternatives elsewhere. This recent meal from Chou's gets a 3-star round of applause; coupled with the 5-star lunch from last time which should be accounted for; a 4-star average thus. In better health, we'll anticipate another lunch one of these days, in which neither dumplings nor noodles shall be spared. If you're in Tempe looking for Chinese food, definitely check this place out for those two items -- Chou's will not disappoint. read more

I've been here a handful of times now and every time I end up leaving stuffed and so so satisfied! Generally when I come here I eat family style with my friend, so we get a couple plates and share them. The only downside to this is their soup dumplings are so good we have to ration them out between us otherwise they they'd be gone in an instant and one of us would end up mad. Seriously these soup dumplings are insanely delicious on their own, and even better in the dipping sauce hey give you, or with a little chili oil. I want to try a bigger variety of their meat and noodle dishes since I've only tried chicken so far, however their chicken is always crispy yet juicy and covered in the sauce. I was sill disappointed even before our food arrived. The menu has absolutely no information regarding gluten free items. No one at the restaurant was able to answer my questions about this, which I found surprising given how long this restaurant has been in business. So, I ordered the pork fried rice, simply hoping for the best. It was okay. Well prepared but without soy sauce it was a bit basic and salty. Chinese cuisine is not on top of my list for my daily diet, however I have no regrets nor complaints in trying this restaurant. My boyfriend and I decided to order a few dishes such as shrimp dumplings, wonton soup, beef with green onions and the pork. Every dish was impeccable and very reasonably priced. Perhaps what I liked the most was the soup, often either too watery or too highly flavored. This one was perfect. I'm glad the waitress warned us with the size of the "small" soup, since even their smaller size can feed two. The waitress was pleasant and attentive. She provided recommendations on dishes. Warning! The Chou's Kitchen in Tempe is NOT better than the original one in Chandler/Mesa. I am mostly rating this new location to compare it to the other original location. First off, it's definitely an improvement on the size of the original. Very spacious, and clean looking. But that's mostly it. The prices are a little higher, and you don't get the amenities that the original gave you. Like for instance, at the original, you can ask for free corn soup. It's nothing special, but it's free you know!!!! So I was kinda bummed on that. Also the prices for the soup dumplings are a little more expensive, and the quality is slightly less! Like The dumplings can deflate, or not have enough juice in them, and sometimes can be dried up. I've also had normal stuff like the Kung pao chicken, the deep fried chive buns, and the normal pork buns and they're good.......but NOT as good as the Chou's in Alma School and Ray location. read more

This is the second opening of the restaurant - the original is in chandler. There are some items that aren't featured here. The most notable item from the other location is the Lamb skewers - it's kind of unfortunate that they don't have it at this location as it's one of my favorites. I usually get their 地三鮮 (eggplant, potato, and jalapeño) and their beef pies. Their xiaolongbaos can be a hit or miss sometimes. There were times when they over cooked so the wrapping is a bit saggy (lack of a better word). Overall, the portion size is reasonable, but the price is also on the higher end. Location itself is not bad - easy access to parking, close to ASU, and there are boba places around if you're looking for after lunch/dinner dessert. I heard this place was voted best Chines resturant in Phoenix for a number of years, so I tried it. Juicy pork dumplings were a bit doughy but fillings taste fine with a little soup in each of them. Pork chow mein is delicious and fresh from the wok. The noodles tasted like hand made pulled noodles got a good chew to it. I will come back to try their beef rolls and spicy beef, tenons, tripe combo next time soon. I will for sure go back again when I am in the area. My favorites dishes were the soup dumplings and house fried rice! The fried rice had a ton of flavor and the dumplings were juicy and delicious. The Mongolian beef was yummy as well. I didn't love the pork potstickers. I feel like they lacked flavor and the sauce that came with them was different than pot sticker sauce I've had in the past. I also didn't love the consistency of the noodles in the house special, but my husband said they were the best noodles he's ever had. So maybe it just depends on your taste. Been here 3 times, and it was great all 3 times. Would recommend their entrees, fried rices and noodles. Egg Rolls were nice and crispy too.
