I hate doing this, I've gone to Kupel's for years and have loved it. STILL love their bagels and bagel sandwiches. But, I don't know what is happening, maybe less people are buying and they have too much stock sitting around? I have gotten into the habit of ordering a bagel sandwich, a challah, and a pastry on Thursdays to have for the weekend. I have the bagel when it arrives, and it has a moldy spot. Three times now. Same with the challah. And we've tried it the same day we ordered it, and I taste mold. It's so dissapointing. I'm going to have to take a break for a while and get our challah elswhere. read more

Delicious Jewish bakery in Brookline! I usually get the chestnut hill on a salt bagel- I love it! Only downside (if this matters to you), is that there's no bacon/sausage/etc to get on sandwiches. They do have a variety of other meat/fish options, though! (Egg salad, tuna salad, lox, etc). It's also not my first choice for a coffee spot, but their bagels never disappoint. read more

It can be iffy, and "iffy" can be disappointing when it pertains to things with flour and sugar. Carbs need to be fabulous and dependable - like the BFF of snacks - but it has to be consistent, and it isn't that way at Kupel's. My go-to's are the cinnamon frozen dough and the cinnamon rolls: you need to have the cinnamon roll from the middle of the tray (unless you like crunchy sides, but then you have lost half of your item to tasteless sides) and you need a frozen dough RIGHT after it has been baked when it is soft. Frozen doughs are hard-to-find (if anyone knows of good ones, please tell me!) and the good ones of Brookline were from the now-departed Freedman's Bakery. Not too much seating inside but on a nice day, you can bring your food outside to their sidewalk patio. Just popped in for a dessert after lunch: apricot hamantash and cinnamon/chocolate roll pastry. If you are craving New York Bagels... THE FOOD I ordered one of their favorite bagels "Lechmere" with onion bagel. It tastes better than I expected maybe because I was coming in with low expectations. The only downside is pretty expensive when you want to add things. I like the lox is missing that capers but it was just expensive adding that alone so I didn't feel like it. They have lots of different bagels as well on-site that you can buy I also ordered their chocolate danish. It was good. I love the number of choc chips. When you have a bite, you can taste choc but also like a tiny orange flavored. I don't know why this is the case but it does and I don't think the description mentioned anything about orange. THE PLACE It is super small inside. It seems like a family business which I like. If you are more of the type of person who likes to see what they eat, you will see a bakery stand with lots of petite sweet and sour bakeries there. THE SERVICE I ordered through Ubereats so not sure what the service is. It is a busy place though! OTHER If you are from the area, parking is tricky. There is a small parking lot nearby but it is usually packed as well. Sunday would be the best to come since you can park pretty much everywhere and come around noon instead of morning. The bagels are large, but the filling ratio is absolutely perfect. I got the Brookline Village (cream cheese, lox, tomato, red onion) on an Everything bagel--so good! Now I'll be craving Kupel's. I went around noon on a Wednesday; no line and my food was ready within a few minutes. Been buying bagels for longer than I would like to admit. I have also been a customer of Kupels since the mid 70's purchasing breads, rolls, sweets and bagels. I dont get there as frequently now as when I worked nearby but still manage to get there quite often. I have noticed a long, slow decline on the bagels and have to agree with a recent reviewer that you can find better quality in your local supermarket. Kupels bagels have turned into large blobs of baked dough. You cant even tell if they were even boiled. So sorry Kupels our long term relationship has come to an end. I ordered the Lechmere bagel which comes with your choice of bagel, garlic and herb cream cheese, Nova Lox, tomato, and capers. This bagel was packed with ingredients and flavor! On a Sunday, I stopped by. In my first impression, Kupel's tends to be quite busy with a long, hectic line that goes a bit inefficiently in my opinion. Anyways, I ordered on an everything bagel the Kenmore aka a double egg and cheese sandwich with some tomato and onion. In all honesty, it was pretty lackluster. The egg was just some kind of premade and reheated egg patty, and the veggies didn't really add much to the sandwich. As a lover of breakfast sandwiches, I was left a bit empty after the experience. The next day, I still had a bagel craving, and I felt like giving Kupel's a second chance. I changed my order from the grassroots, getting a poppyseed bagel with lox spread. In my opinion, it was a lot better. The spread was simple and delicious, and they even snuck a small piece of lox in there--which was delish--to tease me to getting a more expensive sandwich next time, which I probably will. In terms of the bagel itself, the bagel was solid. It had a nice height to it, a light inside, yet it had some density. In particular, the everything bagel could have had more of the everything seasoning on it, and the bagels could have more of a chew in their overall texture. But for a bagel not from New York, I was pretty satisfied. TLDR: bagels are not perfect but still pretty good. long lines. experiment with your bagel experience for best results. lox rocks! read more
