I came here with some friends around 4pm. The sign said "closed" but the hours for Thursday said they reopened at 3pm. When we went in, the employees were on break. We offered to come back when they reopened at 4:30pm, as said by the hostess. The staff was very kind and said they didn't mind opening for us. It's a small, cozy place with about 8 tables or so. It's not a crazy-decked out location like Aji but the food is...wow! It's certainly a lot cheaper and the staff is a lot nicer/personable. I ordered the kani salad, Eric roll, Volcano Tuna roll, and Rainbow Naruto rolls. I was so pleased with the food that I had to get dessert! I had the mango mochi ice cream. Let me start with the appetizer: The kani salad was huge! They give such a generous amount and it's delicious. The rolls were all so really good!! They have a lot of specialty rolls to choose from so you couldn't possibly be bored if you went here repeatedly. My favorite so is the Eric roll. The mango mochi ice cream is...so damn good like...how...dare they give me such good ice cream haha. I will ABSOLUTELY bring back more customers to this location. I think this place has some of the most creative, and well prepared sushi dishes I've ever had. The restaurant is very small with limited seating, and from what I observed, the restaurant does a lot of take out order business. The inside is seems to be outdated, but makes up for it in food quality, and the staff is super friendly, and accommodating. I would definitely recommend trying this place if you like sushi. read more

With all the great reviews I had to come here and try it out. Came here and had the sashimi deluxe, eel avocado roll, and salmon crunch roll to go. The sashimi pieces were generously sized and cut nicely. The salmon was my favorite followed by the yellowtail. The others, mackerel, white tuna, etc were ok. The rolls were good. Everything tasted good but pretty standard so I'm not sure it really stands out from the rest of the places that serve sushi. read more

I love when you walk in, the staff stops what they're doing and makes sure they greet you - even the chefs! Interior is quite cute, and has got some comfy seating and great layout setup for approx 50 ppl+/-?. Our waitress was adorably friendly and the chef came by to get to know us. Firstly I've never written a review before but i felt that this restaurant deserved to be put on the map. I feel like it'll help anyone that read my review to understand that I've been to many sushi joints in Suffolk county from Kotobuki, Aji, Mitsui, Hotoke, Nisan, Nishiki and Onsen just to name a few. So now that you got a tiny background on my adventures, time to get to the review. Like its sister restaurant Onsen, the place is cozy but small and doesn't look like much from the outside in a shopping center but don't let the appearance fool you. The sushi is always fresh and the presentation is top notch. The menu is nearly the same as Onsen and the sushi is just as good. I've sampled my favorites from Onsen at Kushi and wasn't disappointed. Tucked away in a large strip mall off Smithtown Blvd. in Nesconset, right across from the Nesconset Library, this small restaurant is worth a visit. Whether you are having a sit-in meal with the family or a date, or taking home a delicious and very reasonably priced two-roll lunch special like I just scarfed down, the food is fresh and tasty and the service is great. A little story about today's meal: I ordered my meal and was patiently waiting outside after performing an errand a few stores down. Let's start saying that my friend actually recommended this place for their lunch Special from Monday to Thursday, which I have been told it is such a great deal. However, I wasn't lucky enough to be in town for that. So I ended up trying it anyways and it was not what I expected. Very average sushi. Small portions, it was tasty but nothing too extraordinary. The fish in my roll was fresh and that was the most noteworthy thing about it. The spicy salmon roll had panko bread crumbs mixed in, presumably to bulk up the appearance of more fish... The roll was still tasty but that's sneaky "restauranting". I wouldn't come back if in the area, at least not for the non-special offer, if there are other options I could try. My girlfriend was wanting some sushi, and not wanting to deal with a wait at Kotobuki, we decided to give this place a try as we've driven by it many times and have been curious. I hadn't heard much about it, aside from an acquaintance who said it was very good. Lets just say I went in with my expectations fairly low and not knowing what to expect. Kushi vastly exceeded my expectations. It's a pretty small place, but that's kind of charming. The staff is very attentive, and the food was great. We had the sushi and sashimi for two and it was delicious. Everything was very fresh and the presentation ....wow!! Everything looks amazing. Every plate that passed my table looked interesting and tasty!! They also brought out a small complimentary dish that the chef had prepared that was very delicious. This is a small Japanese restaurant that was surprisingly good. The food was excellent - fresh and tasty. The staffs was attentive and provided great customer service. We ordered the Chilean sea bass for appetizer. It was plated on top of watermelon soaked in chef's special sauce. The watermelon pieces was interesting with a mixture of refreshing sweetness with a hint of saltiness. The texture of the fish was perfect. For entree, we ordered calamari dragon roll with kani, avocado, seaweed salad, eel wrapped in whole squid as well as angle roll with tempura avocado banana wrapped with seared king crab. The calamari dragon roll was excellent. The squid was perfectly cooked. Having the dragon roll stuffed inside the squid made it very interesting. The angle roll has a sweet and light taste to it because of the banana. It doesn't have that much carb meat on it, but for the price, I shouldn't expect much. Overall, I would go back again. It's a small, local place but the wait staff were equally attentive to me as well as the regulars The presentation of the food was very artistic and well done. The appetizer was a "creation" and the rolls were very colorful. The sushi itself? That's where it was just OK. I had Unagi, Tuna and Salmon. It was all a little soft like it was not fresh and all the rolls were covered in some type of sauce which overpowered the main ingredient. I think this has people fooled. It isn't a huge restaurant with a giant fish tank and neon pink lights. It is a cozy restaurant in a deserted strip mall that serves delicious, fresh sushi. I ordered a roll online once and they called me to let me know that the chef said he did not have the fish and if I wanted an alternative. I DEFINITELY appreciated that since a similar incident happened at another restaurant *ehhem Acropolis* and they didn't tell me until I got there. I love that they greet you warmly when they start recognizing you. The service inside the restaurant can be slow sometimes but it doesn't bother me. So I think after last night's visit its time to say "Sayanora to Kushi". I want to be a fan but every time I've gotten it I'm even more disappointed then the previous times. One thing that made me deduct a star is the service. I cannot stand when you go somewhere and the waitstaff is constantly asking you if you're ready to order. It was 7 of us last night so getting everyone to cooperate is a little hard. Plus we were all talking a lot. But still give a group a chance. We must've said give us a few minutes at least 3 or 4x before we all ordered. I've learned that when you close your menu and put it down it means your ready to order. ANYWAY! My mom and I split: Sautéed Scallops, Shrimp & Veggie Tempura, and 2 California Rolls. The tempura came with miso soup. I have to say.. I wasn't impressed. When I get sushi with my mom it has to be cooked stuff ONLY! Unless I plan on eating the raw stuff by myself. Our scallops came out first and they were pretty tough. My cousin got the Sautéed Oysters and made me have one. All I could taste was a fried lemon taste. Kotobuki's oysters are my favorite by far. Do not mess with my Kotobuki oysters... or else! The miso soup came next. I hardly ever get miso soup anymore but I used to love the good size chunks of tofu in it. This one had tiny tofu. Finally our rolls and tempura came out. I could tell by the look on my Mom's face when she took her first California roll it was no where near an Aji California roll. WE LOVE AJI! I love Kotobuki more than Aji but I will eat Aji any day over this place. My mom just an FYI is obsessed with the California Rolls and American Dream from Aji. So I take a California roll. It tastes like a Cucumber roll. Upon further inspection the roll had 2/4 cucumber, 1/4 avocado, and 1/4 crab. Huh?! Next was the Shrimp & Veggie tempura. It was OK but I wouldn't order it again. Some pieces were just overly greasy. Plus the sauce had no flavor. If I want tempura I might as well stay home and make the veggie nests from Trader Joe's. If you haven't had them... GO GET THEM! We had them during the past Snow Mageddon. So SO good! They are in the freezer part of TJ's where the hor d'oeuvres are. Those veggie nests had more flavor then the tempura here at the restaurant. My cousin also made me try this mango and tuna roll I think. I swallowed it reluctantly. The mango was ice cold. Then they surprised my Aunt with sliced up orange and fried ice cream for dessert. As I said in the beginning of this review... I won't be back. I miss KaZu and his wife that were in this location before they closed up shop. KaZu was part of my perfect Sushi Trifecta. I was going to give this place 3 stars because their sushi is standard compared to other places in long island. We ordered the sashimi deluxe and the fish was alright, not fresh but alright. Spicy salmon was not spicy at all. Godzilla roll tasted okay, New York roll was okay. Osaka was the best I had tonight. The ONLY reason why I am giving this place one star is because 30 mins after I ate from here, I am CURRENTLY experiencing an upset stomach and horrible diarrhea which goes to show that the fish is poorly treated and the place is not clean. I have never experienced this situation at ANY other sushi restaurant before. Great! I guess I'll have to head to the doctors tomorrow to check for food poisoning if these symptoms persist. Don't underestimate this place from the outside. Probably this is the BEST sushi place around the area. Food: You can't really compare the luxury fishes in NYC or Japan to this place (Yes, I have been to Japan and had sushi there too). Meaning the fishes are pretty standard for a Long Island sushi place. However, you can tell that they put a lot of effort in it. Even a plain sashimi dinner, they make a little twist here and there. Service: As an experienced server, I can tell that the staffs genuinely care about their customers and they are really kind. They are busy, especially during the weekend, but they manage it in a professional manner. Ambiance: Unlike the other fancy clubish sushi places, this place has a relatively quiet, modest setting. They minimized the decoration and tried to make a little distinctive compare to the other places around. Kushi hit a homerun with me last night. This place has blown up due to good write ups in Newsday & NYT, which caught my attention, as well as some great reviews here on Yelp. The staff is attentive, friendly, and service was quite quick. The prices are reasonable, not the least expensive sushi I've ever had in the area but certainly much less than many other joints. We tried the Tuna on the Beach salad, which was laden with tuna, black pepper, tomato, assorted salad veggies. It was quite enjoyable! The tuna flavor was very subtle, sometimes overpowered by the tomatoes, but it is a nice was to start the meal. We also previewed the Nesconset roll, which will be on their next menu reboot, and liked that roll very much. I think the winning roll here was the Tom Roll, a roll with tuna and avocado inside, and a nice thick piece of fried eel on top, the eel was tender, warm, and really set off the flavor of the fish inside. We also ordered some rolls fully customized, and the chef gladly made them for us, and made them well. We sampled their yellowtail in a handroll, and at the suggestion of a friend, Eric toasted up the seaweed paper, coated it with sesame oil, and added some chopped scallion at our request. I have to say their yellowtail was extremely fresh and yummy as all hell. The presentation on the sashimi for two plate was beautiful (expect pics from Gaurav P). I only tried the black pepper tuna (AMAZING) and the octopus (nothing to speak of). We also ordered a King Crab roll but it never came, sadly. They have a nice selection of Sake as well. I will definitely be returning to Kushi because it's pretty friggin close to my house and I hate having to drive to Nassau for affordable sushi (the gas itself outweighs the cost savings anyway).
