    Shrimp tempura handroll
    Beatrice V.

We stopped in for a quick bite around dinner time. Nice restaurant inside, feels upscale and like a great date spot. Not a ton of seating, they have some table seating and seating around the bar. We just got the 3 handroll set each which includes tuna, salmon and your choice of salmon tempura or shrimp tempura. I preferred the shrimp tempura over the salmon. We just thought they were okay, the seaweed wasn't the crispy kind that I like with handrolls. It was soft seaweed. I prefer other spots for handrolls. There also wasn't a lot of fish inside each one, though the quality of the fish seemed pretty good. I'd be curious to try out their sushi and sashimi sometime. Does seem kinda pricey though!

Umiko Sushi Ray opened up at the end of November 2025 taking over the space of The Little Cafe and it's such a great addition to the sushi scene. I dined in yesterday for my first time with a friend and we enjoyed the time very much! The experience was so great - welcoming, personable, the establishment is minimal and modern with a great clean beautiful look and feel, good atmosphere, music, and the food and drinks were top notch! Chef Alex (over 30 years of experience and has worked at some top notch places) and the team, Mookie, and everyone else are all so wonderful. The food menu is really great with a wide range of options. They have a nice lunch special (12pm-2:30pm), various sets (combination, hand rolls), a couple omakase options, specialty sashimis, many small plates, a few salads (seaweed, garden, cucumber), nigiri (1 pc per order), sashimi (5pcs per order), various rolls (classic rolls, cloud rolls, specialty rolls), soups (udon, ramen), a ribe eye teriyaki, and two collar items (salmon and yellowtail). They have a nice dessert menu with some ice creams dishes as well. Drink options to enjoy include a variety of both alcoholic( sojus, sakes, wine and beer) and nonalcoholic beverages (waters, soft drinks - ramune included, iced teas, hot green tea, lemonade, apple juice, and hot/cold coffee). I was really impressed by the food in its quality, taste and presentation. Some items are from Japan too! Enjoyed the following as a first timer: Hot green tea House hot sake Sapporo Japanese seaweed salad Holy! crab (small plate item featuring baked snow crab) Crispy soft-shell crab (small plate item of lightly battered soft shell crab) Albacore and crispy onion harmony (specialty signature sashimi) Nigiri - red snapper, Hokkaido scallop, yellowtail hamachi Green tea ice cream Everything was stellar but there was one item we ordered twice which was the Holy! crab and after you have a bite you'll most likely say that as well. Nigiri was presented very well with appropriate instructions (no soy needed for instance for some), the albacore and crispy onion harmony was melt in your mouth good, and the crispy soft shell crab portion was grand! Seating options include a few tables in the front, nice sushi bar seating, and various tables (no booths). Prices are on par to the times and comparable establishments. Parking options include a few spots they have and street. The few spots in the front are a little tricky to get into and out and I don't recommend that option, so I recommend parking on Ventura , the side streets, or maybe any lots around from the businesses around. Looking forward to being back soon!

Been wanting to try this place and finally had the time when we were at an event at the Tarzana cultural center. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was Saturday night so it was a little busy but they took reservations which is nice. We ordered the edamame which had a Smokey sweet flavor, which was different but still good. We also had spicy tuna crispy rice. We love that the rice is flat and not too much rice. I also ordered the Fireman or firehouse roll I think, which was delicious! Just the right amount of heat and love the lemon slice! Would definitely order again! We also got miso soup, rice, and nigiri. The restaurant is very pretty, and I love the Japanese wave wall. Parking is slim but street parking near by. Definitely will be back.

3.5 stars I would love to give place higher stars but as of now I can't. My wife and I stopped by for lunch the other day of give this band new sushi place a try. Umiko Sushi Ray took over The Little Cafe space. The restaurant itself is nice and modern. Umiko Sushi Ray has a good lunch Set menu that is very reasonable in price. In fact everything in the menu was very reasonable in price including the 10pc omakase that I ordered and my wife got their lunch set. 10pc Omakase: Everything fish that was served by Chef Alex was good and fresh. Some of the highlights of the nigiri were Hotate, Chutoro, Otoro and Sweet Shrimp. Each nigiri already come season by chef Alex so please no dipping. Fish to rice ratio was perfect. My only complaint and the reason that I gave a 3.5 stars was that the (Shari) sushi rice was very mushy and wasn't season at all. My wife did enjoy her lunch set which came with 2 hand rolls, sashimi, chicken yakitori and egg roll. Service was fantastic and very friendly. Chef Alex was fantastic as well. Overall, Umiko Sushi Ray looks very promising. I would definitely give Uniko try again. Until our next visit.

Godfather Roll and tuna Crispy rice was damn near some of the BEST sushi I have ever tasted! I'm NOT exaggerating. Inviting, clean and intimate space. Elegant plates, friendly staff and BOMB-ass sushi! Thank you to chef Alex and all others working today. We will ABSOLUTELY be coming back to try out more stuff because we only got two items today for our first time dining here. I felt foolish for getting my soy sauce and wasabi ready only to not use it once! There was already such a perfect balance of flavor! Thank you guys and see you soon!

My first time at Umiko! Beautiful atmosphere, very minimal yet welcoming. Delicious sushi, and wonderful service! The owner is the sweetest and Chef Alex and his team did a fabulous job. A great place for an evening out with the family or a treat for yourself! Definitely a new to go spot in the valley!

Valentine's Day at Umiko was truly unforgettable. My boyfriend surprised me with dinner, and Chef Alex Kim graciously allowed him to come in early to set up flowers at our seats before I arrived. It was such a thoughtful touch and made the evening feel incredibly special. From the moment we sat down, the service was impeccable -- attentive, warm, and perfectly paced. And the food? Absolutely divine. We've had a lot of sushi around Los Angeles, but Chef Alex Kim has created something truly superb here. Each dish felt intentional, beautifully executed, and uniquely his own. He has clearly put his personal stamp on the experience, and it shows. Bravo to the entire team. We will absolutely be returning.

Most people contribute to a pot luck feast that spans the wide world of food, from hot dogs and chili to baked ziti, tacos, meatballs, fried chicken, Chinese food, and on and on -- including some amazing homemade clam chowder from Mike The Mailman. Bartender Natalie did an amazing job of handling the busy crowd with speed and smiles. There were a couple of other staffers on site to watch the game, and they jumped in when she needed a hand with this or that, but for the most part Natalie captained the bar single-handedly for the duration. Kudos to her. It's true, Super Bowl only comes once a year, so other game days don't have the pot luck feast -- Sugar Mill doesn't have a kitchen, though they're happy to have you bring in whatever food you like and eat it there. (Drank 12/11/14 TH @ 6:30pm): Whole Foods has raised the bar with the addition of this new feature!…read more I invited a couple friends who joined me at the Tarzana location of the Vine 39 Bar At Whole Foods Market for an evening of "Dinner Conversations" presented by Netiya and a host of guest speakers. The event itself was to promote local growers and merchants, social issues, sustainability, and how you can possibly spread the word. In addition, a selection of appropriate appetizers and snacks were served as we listened and then mingled amongst everyone. An interesting location to host such an event but understoond the tie-in quickly. Although I enjoyed the event, here's the lowdown on the bar: St. Bernardus ABT 12 On Tap ($6.99 ea.) - I treated a friend to a beer since he drove. If you knew me, I was always in search of trying something I'd never tried before especially when it came to any libations. So, this lovely brown stout-like brew claimed my tastebuds after a sampling. With a slight body and chocolately taste, I thoroughly enjoyed yet babied it so it lasted for the entire event (I almost made it!). And, it went well with the acclimate weather of the evening. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw Service - On this chilled eventful evening, there were two young and very friendly bartenders (female and male) who kindly offered samples to my friends and I of the beer on tap (six total) as well as provided some notes and recommendations http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=L0fc5dsvEwFZVV6788MgpA. Once we made our decision, the young man served our beers, rang up my order and concluded with a nice "thank you". FYI...there was no opportunity to tip on the receipt nor did I see a tip jar. Excellent service! Parking (Free) - Part of an outdoor shopping center, there was plenty of exposed and underground parking. If necessary, I believed you were able to park on all the nearby streets, but always check any posted street signs. Atmosphere, décor, ambience - Located all the way towards the back right corner of the store where all the alcohol was located and butted-up against the self-serve salads and freshly-prepared food items, it literally was like a displaced oval-shaped island. There were several barstools at the bar as well as some along the outer edge of the area with a thin platform to place your drinks. But if you wanted to get more cozy, there was a row of inviting cushy sofas and tables http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=RaAmy5NLgYHLwxZzheZ47w. Only electric lighting was available as several lamps hung from the ceiling http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=herLbqkO4vYroy_pTuzsxw. There was one TV and no background music (unless you considered any announcements made on the overhead speaker) http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=ub4JxV9orm_HKFEes2kDcg. Attire - Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops...if it weren't for the acclimate weather. Overall, the Tarzana location of Vines 39 Bar At Whole Foods Market was an eye-opener, and I understood more locations (and competitors) were adding this new wrinkle to the grocery shopping experience. With very little knowledge of how this all worked, I saw some potential with this concept, but I thought of many recommendations I during my time here. As of yet, I certainly wouldn't consider a grocery store as a destination to grab a drink nor would I promote the practice to shoppers to throw one back either before, during, and especially after their shopping. Of course, this might be a good alternative to a fast food restaurant where you purchased food there and settled in at the bar. A small selection of bottled beer and wine were also available; however, I'm not sure about liquor or mixed drinks. The prices seemed to be on par with what you'd expect at a bar, which in my opinion wasn't a positive since you missed out on the "bar scene" experience (i.e. dancing, eye candy, games). With that being said, I felt the prices should've been dropped at least a buck or two. Not sure if they had any sort of happy hour. To be fair, I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total paid experience was around $15.00; no tip required). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Been coming here for a few year and I got nothing but good things to say about the staff. From…read moreGary, Danny, Andrea and everyone else they have working at Vine 39, they're always very helpful and friendly. ... like just right now they brought me my New York steak I just bought for $5.50 to the bar area all the way from they meat department where they grilled it for me free. This steak and the Stout I just took down from the shelf and paid under $4. You really get service here so if you come here and the prices are more than fair so if you come here you better leave these guys some tip. I'm tired of seeing cheap shits come here and leave lousy tips. If you do come to Vine 39 you should know that they stop serving at 930 and close at 10. It's a good place to grab food and a beer at any time, with friends or if you want to enjoy a bottle of wine at shelf price with someone. You'll soon find out this is a hidden gem in the valley.....

Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and gave good recommendations, which made ordering easy. The drinks were good and definitely not watered down. My only critique is that I wish the portions were a little larger for the price. Overall, it was a solid experience, and I'd definitely go back if I'm in the area. We decided to come back with friends but on a Wednesday night at 6:30 instead. Sat at a table in the area where the music was but it was very loud and tightly packed with tables and guests. I could barely hear my friends due to the loud conversations, loud laughter, and just the acoustic affects in the restaurant were bad from that. We ordered steak, sides, and thought baked potatoes but got mashed instead. After we ate dinner we asked the manager if we could seat outside for dessert instead due to the loud noises around us. He brought us there but we had to wait at the bar outside till we were seated took an additional 15-20 minutes. After seated it was better than inside with a nice decor too instead. Dessert was ok service good. For such a high-ended restaurant and pricy food it's only avarage, inside decor pretty but very and tightly packed with guests and loud especially for a week day night kind of unusual, I was disappointed think it's a bit overrated sorry to say. I think Flemings, Ruth Chris, or Morton's are better food wise for the same price and dining experience and not as loud too. Think what could make it better is to thin out the crowded packed affect in the main inside dining area would help a lot too, or, if we ever go back sit outside instead I recommend. The service and staff there were very nice, friendly, and attentive and worked hard during service though. So overall raiting is a 3. Tuesday music night inside was good though think because the band is set up where tables of guests would be so less talking and guests listening to the music instead. Hope they make some changes to there inside seating there for improvements will and could help overall.
