I am adding this place to my favorites. Beautiful ambiance & treated as VIP. Their service & presentation is upscale for this small restaurant. I ordered their lunch special and was delicious, and a good portion. Their menu is great & affordable. Thank you Chef, and my beautiful server, May. Blessings

We stopped in for a quick bite around dinner time. Nice restaurant inside, feels upscale and like a great date spot. Not a ton of seating, they have some table seating and seating around the bar. We just got the 3 handroll set each which includes tuna, salmon and your choice of salmon tempura or shrimp tempura. I preferred the shrimp tempura over the salmon. We just thought they were okay, the seaweed wasn't the crispy kind that I like with handrolls. It was soft seaweed. I prefer other spots for handrolls. There also wasn't a lot of fish inside each one, though the quality of the fish seemed pretty good. I'd be curious to try out their sushi and sashimi sometime. Does seem kinda pricey though!

Umiko Sushi Ray opened up at the end of November 2025 taking over the space of The Little Cafe and it's such a great addition to the sushi scene. I dined in yesterday for my first time with a friend and we enjoyed the time very much! The experience was so great - welcoming, personable, the establishment is minimal and modern with a great clean beautiful look and feel, good atmosphere, music, and the food and drinks were top notch! Chef Alex (over 30 years of experience and has worked at some top notch places) and the team, Mookie, and everyone else are all so wonderful. The food menu is really great with a wide range of options. They have a nice lunch special (12pm-2:30pm), various sets (combination, hand rolls), a couple omakase options, specialty sashimis, many small plates, a few salads (seaweed, garden, cucumber), nigiri (1 pc per order), sashimi (5pcs per order), various rolls (classic rolls, cloud rolls, specialty rolls), soups (udon, ramen), a ribe eye teriyaki, and two collar items (salmon and yellowtail). They have a nice dessert menu with some ice creams dishes as well. Drink options to enjoy include a variety of both alcoholic( sojus, sakes, wine and beer) and nonalcoholic beverages (waters, soft drinks - ramune included, iced teas, hot green tea, lemonade, apple juice, and hot/cold coffee). I was really impressed by the food in its quality, taste and presentation. Some items are from Japan too! Enjoyed the following as a first timer: Hot green tea House hot sake Sapporo Japanese seaweed salad Holy! crab (small plate item featuring baked snow crab) Crispy soft-shell crab (small plate item of lightly battered soft shell crab) Albacore and crispy onion harmony (specialty signature sashimi) Nigiri - red snapper, Hokkaido scallop, yellowtail hamachi Green tea ice cream Everything was stellar but there was one item we ordered twice which was the Holy! crab and after you have a bite you'll most likely say that as well. Nigiri was presented very well with appropriate instructions (no soy needed for instance for some), the albacore and crispy onion harmony was melt in your mouth good, and the crispy soft shell crab portion was grand! Seating options include a few tables in the front, nice sushi bar seating, and various tables (no booths). Prices are on par to the times and comparable establishments. Parking options include a few spots they have and street. The few spots in the front are a little tricky to get into and out and I don't recommend that option, so I recommend parking on Ventura , the side streets, or maybe any lots around from the businesses around. Looking forward to being back soon!

3.5 stars I would love to give place higher stars but as of now I can't. My wife and I stopped by for lunch the other day of give this band new sushi place a try. Umiko Sushi Ray took over The Little Cafe space. The restaurant itself is nice and modern. Umiko Sushi Ray has a good lunch Set menu that is very reasonable in price. In fact everything in the menu was very reasonable in price including the 10pc omakase that I ordered and my wife got their lunch set. 10pc Omakase: Everything fish that was served by Chef Alex was good and fresh. Some of the highlights of the nigiri were Hotate, Chutoro, Otoro and Sweet Shrimp. Each nigiri already come season by chef Alex so please no dipping. Fish to rice ratio was perfect. My only complaint and the reason that I gave a 3.5 stars was that the (Shari) sushi rice was very mushy and wasn't season at all. My wife did enjoy her lunch set which came with 2 hand rolls, sashimi, chicken yakitori and egg roll. Service was fantastic and very friendly. Chef Alex was fantastic as well. Overall, Umiko Sushi Ray looks very promising. I would definitely give Uniko try again. Until our next visit.

Been wanting to try this place and finally had the time when we were at an event at the Tarzana cultural center. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was Saturday night so it was a little busy but they took reservations which is nice. We ordered the edamame which had a Smokey sweet flavor, which was different but still good. We also had spicy tuna crispy rice. We love that the rice is flat and not too much rice. I also ordered the Fireman or firehouse roll I think, which was delicious! Just the right amount of heat and love the lemon slice! Would definitely order again! We also got miso soup, rice, and nigiri. The restaurant is very pretty, and I love the Japanese wave wall. Parking is slim but street parking near by. Definitely will be back.

Great sushi! Fresh, tasty, and really good service. I'll definitely come back. The place is clean and not fishy smell I like it !

I believe they just opened. The ambiance was warm and welcoming. The servers were very attentive and the food was delicious. They are very creative with their plating. Can't wait to go back and try other dishes.

Godfather Roll and tuna Crispy rice was damn near some of the BEST sushi I have ever tasted! I'm NOT exaggerating. Inviting, clean and intimate space. Elegant plates, friendly staff and BOMB-ass sushi! Thank you to chef Alex and all others working today. We will ABSOLUTELY be coming back to try out more stuff because we only got two items today for our first time dining here. I felt foolish for getting my soy sauce and wasabi ready only to not use it once! There was already such a perfect balance of flavor! Thank you guys and see you soon!

My first time at Umiko! Beautiful atmosphere, very minimal yet welcoming. Delicious sushi, and wonderful service! The owner is the sweetest and Chef Alex and his team did a fabulous job. A great place for an evening out with the family or a treat for yourself! Definitely a new to go spot in the valley!

Wonderful sushi with great menu to pick from. Met the owners and what a pleasure it was. Tasty and fresh sushi from salmon & yellowtail belly, Black snapper and special rolls by Chef Alex. It's local, New, clean, comfortable, and delicious. little Cafe will be missed but Umiko is a great addition to the neighborhood. Congratulations and be back real soon!!!!

Valentine's Day at Umiko was truly unforgettable. My boyfriend surprised me with dinner, and Chef Alex Kim graciously allowed him to come in early to set up flowers at our seats before I arrived. It was such a thoughtful touch and made the evening feel incredibly special. From the moment we sat down, the service was impeccable -- attentive, warm, and perfectly paced. And the food? Absolutely divine. We've had a lot of sushi around Los Angeles, but Chef Alex Kim has created something truly superb here. Each dish felt intentional, beautifully executed, and uniquely his own. He has clearly put his personal stamp on the experience, and it shows. Bravo to the entire team. We will absolutely be returning.

I LOVE SUSHI...and it really doesn't matter if it's Ralphs, Nobu, or Kura Revolving Sushi...HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!! and I mean this, HOWEVER!!!!!!!! Given the price and quality, it would be hard for me to come back for lunch when there are so many options along Ventura Boulevard, or even if I'm willing to drive a little farther to Sawtelle, Little Tokyo, or Gardena for Japanese skewers. At first glance, it's pretty small in there, but I never felt uncomfortable. They were playing some cool lo-fi beats that weren't too loud -- no one was screaming at each other over the music. The guy taking my order was super cool and attentive; he kept checking in and was on top of the beer situation. I'd read other reviews saying the service was terrible, but in my honest opinion, he was great. I also read that people weren't happy with the owner. I could see how he might rub people the wrong way, but he mostly just kept to himself -- we only spoke when he picked up my plates. Some things I ordered really stood out, while others were just mid -- not bad, but they didn't have that wow factor. Standouts: the salmon belly (highly recommend), the beef wagyu, the gyoza (I know, it's gyoza, hard to mess up, but I've had bad gyoza before), the amberjack (best I've had), and the yellowtail carpaccio, which was bomb. The only thing that I didn't really like was the soy sauce ramekin, it was difficult to dip my sushi in it. It's too small and square. All in all, I'd recommend this place to a friend if they're in the area, and I'll be coming back.

He was personable, entertaining, and made the entire experience feel special from beginning to end. And of course, the 17-course omakase was incredible. You can really see the level of skill, precision, and craftsmanship that goes into every single course. Every piece felt intentional, from the flavors and textures to the presentation. There wasn't a single course that felt like an afterthought, and by the end of the night we were already talking about when we could come back. Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, and an even better experience because of Chef Jason. This is officially our new standard for omakase. We'll absolutely be back!

Celebrating my wife's and daughter's birthdays. What better way than to experience omakase dining…read morein an upscale sushi restaurant. Speakeasy ambiance - enter through an unmarked door on the second floor of a small strip mall. Reservations are mandatory. Start in a small bar area where you are given a welcome beverage - mine was a Japanese whiskey - and 2 small appetizers. The "main room" has 10 guests seated around three sushi chefs preparing the meal. No utensils - all food is eaten by hand. The meal consists of 16 serving of fresh sushi, fish sliced in front of you as the sushi is prepared and explained to you by the main chef. The fish tonight included hamachi, toro, kinmedai, notate, shims aji, madani, Sahara, unagi, and others. Plus a Japanese frozen dessert. One dish more delicious and melt in your mouth tasty than the last. Spectacular dining experience. A pricy dining experience ($244 per person counting tax and tip) but well worth it!
