Quality of fish here does not match up with the price you're paying. Uchi, Kata, and Roka has much better quality sushi for similar price point. However, we were most disappointed by the Hot rock wagyu. It is supposedly "A5" but we all thought it was a little tough and too chewy. And yes we cooked it medium rare. Skip it! Kinda hard to find (or could be us out of towners) the signage makes you think it's up front of the shopping strip but it's tucked further back. Anyways the sushi was fresh and delicious. KUU Restaurant is one of our go-to sushi restaurants, so we called in advance to place our order: -Hama Yuzu (tarabagani, yellow onion, scallion, hamachi, serrano pepper, yuzu garlic soy) for $19 -Truffle Suzuki (yellowtail, scallion, crunch, jalapeno, suzuki, golden tobiko truffle yuzu vinaigrette) for $19 -June (spicy tuna, crunch, unagi,avocado, unagi sauce, sesame seed) for $18 -Garlic Edamame (togarashi, garlic, lime zest) for $7 As much as I miss dining in at KUU Restaurant, the food was still great to-go. I surprised my husband for his birthday with dinner at this location and the food was exceptional. Our waiter, Julio was very helpful as it was our first time here and recommended all his favorite dishes. We tried the Toyosu sashimi box, Kanpaccio, King Crab Sunomono for cold/raw dishes and for sushi we tried June and Kuu. Everything was paired perfectly together and we loved all the flavors. I've been here several times and I really enjoy it. They have good customer service and I'm absolutely obsessed with the Rin roll. I'm not a sashimi (raw sushi) eater so I'm so happy I found a roll that I can have time and time again without feeling basic for not eating what some folks consider "real" sushi. Their entrees have small, fine dining sized portions so expect to order two or at least include a side dish if you want to get full or if you're greedy like me. My cousin enjoyed the crispy duck but wasn't pleased with the portion size. The prawns had a bit of a kick to the flavor. Not too spicy but pretty good! Don't miss out on Kuu! Kuu comes off as just another high end Japanese restaurant. It has an acclaimed chef, fresh and delicious menu, professional wait staff, and an ambience that wraps this all up into a delightful dining experience. All of these things should be expected from any restaurant of this caliber. We came here for a family meal and tried several dishes. What I took away was that this restaurant isn't afraid to push boundaries resulting in pleasant surprises of flavor and better quality in familiar dishes. There are 3 that really stood out to me: Rock shrimp, was flawlessly executed. I've never had any as delicious. Hot rock, was cut thicker and was more tender than you will find anywhere else. The server even want so far as demonstrating how to do it with the first piece. Lamb and foie gras, I've spent days wishing I could go back and eat this again. The way the buttery foie gras mixes with the sweetness of the Asian pear is like a melody in your mouth taking the bold flavor from the lamb and elevates you to a near nirvana. The only drawback, if you can call it that, is that it's not a well known restaurant. This worked in favor of us getting great seating and no noise from nearby tables. Our waitress was knowledgeable and helped us make our way through the menu. The food was fantastic! We started with the Tuna Tartare with taro chips. I'd give this a 8/10. It was a good starter, but everything we ordered after just blew it out of the water. Next, we ordered the A5 wagyu carpaccio. This was my first time trying wagyu, and it was amazing. They didn't even know what "real" wasabi was and thought their powdered sub was actually "real". My server was in training and new nothing and every question he had to leave and ask someone else and come back. So many good experienced servers need jobs and are good at their jobs. Definitely not a place for kids. My friend got the business lunch with the butternut squash soup, the Miso cod, salad, rice and dessert. All of it was amazing. I tried some of my friends and the butternut squash soup was amazing. I would order that over the miso soup, and I looooooove miso soup. The wagyu tataki was good but so was the miso cod. So let me start of by saying the parking was a little confusing. You can park in the garage and its free. The restaurant is close to State Fare if that helps. The interior is beautiful. Even the bathroom has the right lighting. I didn't get to see the bar area as much. I know I saw a fireplace and it looked so nice and cozy especially in February. I was pressed for another event so I didn't have time to try more and I'm not sure if I would because of the service. I had to ask for things multiple times (3-4x) until I was given what I ordered, things were on the bill that I did not receive and it was a big headache. I'm not sure if it was because it was a large group but the reservation was made for quite some time and there should have been more servers for our room reservation. Literally the food saved them! Beautiful setup and nice ambiance... I might think more highly if I had nothing to compare it to. Kuu is similar to a certain other popular and expensive sushi place in Houston... but nowhere near as good. I would choose the other place over this every time. Our experience here last night wasn't bad, except for when my partner tried to order and our server walked off because she later claimed she thought I ordered for both of us... but nothing we tried had a wow factor. We had the Kanpaccio and Crispy duck as appetizers... the orange in the kanpaccio was unnecessary and did nothing for it. The duck was very gamey tasting. Wouldn't order either again. For entrees we had the Lamb & foie gras, Kuu, rin & truffle Suzuki rolls, mackerel, sea bream, snapper and nasu nigiri. The lamb was good. The foie gras wasn't. The truffle Suzuki roll was really good - the pear in the Kuu roll was unnecessary and threw the taste off. The rin was just ok. I didn't care for their snapper or nasu but the sea bream was very good. For dessert we ordered the bread pudding and it tasted like plain bread. Wouldn't order again. What a pleasant surprise! I received a two free brunches at the Houston Chronicle's Allison Cook's Top 100 event. I decided to use it when my parents came in and it just happened to be the day it expired. I made a reservation through Open Table, but it wasn't very crowded. Not sure if that was because the Sunday brunch is new or it is the weekend before Thanksgiving. With the brunch ($38/ person) you get to choose two meals from their entrees and unlimited visits to the snack bar. My dad went with the pork and 60 degree egg and the seafood pancake. He really liked it. My mom and I both went with the chicken udon and tuna tartare (pictured below). Both were delicious. The smack snack bar is $18 by itself, unlimited visits included with your brunch. On the snack bar they had an amazing squid salad (sounds gross, but delicious), a seasoned root ( forgot what it was, but really good), cucumber salad, lobster crisp (normally not a fan, but these were really good), spicy edemame, honey yogurt drink, a sweet fruit tea, an soy based drink, and desserts. The sushi rolls here are so good and exactly what I want from a sushi restaurant. A lot of creativity and different flavor profiles. I had the Truffle Suzuki and June roll and would recommend both! We started with the Brussels (very small portion more like a side than an appetizer) and garlic edamame and both were tasty as well.
