My friend was really interested in trying out KUU, so I agreed to tag along to try some of the vegetarian fare because hey, somebody has to look out for all the veg*ns out there! Might as well be me . . .? We arrived as as happy hour was beginning, but the boisterous, clamoring, already alcohol infused birthday party celebration crew crowding the bar are convinced us to forego happy hour specials and prices for a more sedate and quiet experience in the dining area. We struggled a bit with drink choices (decisions in general, I fail at them) but the server cheerfully recommended a rather delightful concoction of sorts. Of course I don't remember the name of it (can't find it online I assume KUU does a seasonal specialty cocktail menu?), nor can I offer any descriptions about it. However, I can tell you that I asked the server for something slightly sweet, refreshing, a little bit fruity. Lawlz, I am just so helpful, no?! I opted for the Portobello Makimono and two pieces of the Nasu Sashimi, uncertain as to whether that would be sufficient because I was in a "stuffing my face" kind of mood. Rest assured it most certainly was, well I walked away full, for like an hour, because you know how sushi is. The makimono was quite generously rolled with huge chunks of avocado and I sort of detected the asparagus and cucumber but the yuzu koshō draped over the portobello was probably the most defining delicious aspect. The Nasu was quite good - slightly salty sweet and with nice little caramelization going on, but I do believe Uchi does something similar and it's farsuperior (sorry to say!). I'm not really the hugest sushi connoisseur to begin with due to the obvious dietary restrictions, but these two items were surprisingly pleasant and a welcome deviation from the usual vegetable and avocado rolls. Service was also quite good, but I think we were the only diners in the general seating area, so I would expect as much. I don't think I'm necessarily a raving KUU fanatic now, in that I don't have immediate plans to return to this place, but the overall experience was lovely and nice (also yes, I am in a good mood right now, let's just let it happen . . .). read more

We tried a few of the cocktails and the first one I got was terrible and thankfully our waitress allowed me to exchange it for something else. I wish I could remember the names of the cocktails we enjoyed. Omakase x 2. I'd rate it a 7.5/10. This is not your traditional Omakase experience. No interaction with the chef, but server was knowledgeable. There are more hot dishes than cold pieces/sushi. We were here celebrating our anniversary so the manager/owner brought us complimentary champagne. Atmosphere was nice and modernized. On Saturday they have someone playing their violin live and he was spectacular. Restrooms were clean, but no fancy napkins. Favorite dish was the bacon wrapped seabass. Their eel sushi is the best I've ever had!!!! Heard their sweet shrimp is really good too but just never had the chance to taste it. All the sushi I had were good but you seriously MUST try their eel sushi. I had prawn bento and it was ok but I wouldn't order it again. The dessert in the bento was disappointing. I like Kuu, but I just don't go as often because it's pricey and the portions are smallll. I would definitely recommend this place for a more formal business lunch or dinner. read more

Located at Gessner and I-10, I always passed by this restaurant but never had the chance to check it out until recently. The restaurant has a trendy but modern feel. My companion and I promptly get seated in the dining area after our time at the bar. There was a table between the bar and dining area, which would be great for GNO! They offer HH here too. We quickly ordered our food: Crispy Duck, Miso Black Cod, Kuu, Rin, and Poseidon. Each dish was described briefly and to the point. I was amused by how knowledgable our waiter was. First hot dish: Crispy Duck (3/5). Duck Breast, Compressed Apple, Scallop Chip, and Wasabi Beet Reduction. My companion complained how this dish was over cooked last time he tried it. This was done medium rare, was not over cooked at all. It is crispy on the outside and tender. The scallop chip complimented well with the dish. It reminded me of some Korean snack people eat on the street markets. The presentation was nice though. Second hot dish: Miso Black Cod (5/5). Black Cod, Rainbow Carrots, and Carrot Puree. This dish was outstanding, from the appeal of the dish to the taste. I highly recommended it. The fish just melts in your mouth. My companion was not kidding when he said this was his favorite. I would have definitely ordered another. No complaints. Kuu Roll (5/5): Asian Pear, Yuzu Kosho, Avocado, Tuna, Lobster, and Edamame Puree. Asian Pears + Avocados + Lobsters... And one bite got me in love. It is refreshing and savory. I just highly recommend this roll. Rin Roll (4/5): Shrimp Tempura, Cream Cheese, Crab, Serrano Pepper, Aioli, and Cilantro. My second favorite.. But there wasn't a distinct taste unlike the other 2 rolls I tried. This roll is similar to Shaggy Dog from what I remember. Poseidon Roll (3/5): Chopped Scallop, Scallion, Diced Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, Tobiko, Cilantro, and Truffle Yuzu Vinaigrette. This is different... Not sweet nor savory. I don't know what it was but felt like it was missing something. I tried to eat this with soy sauce and didn't work. This roll was just eh to me.. Was kind of let down from Yelp reviews. Lastly for dessert, we ordered the Gomo Choko (3/5) AKA "Sesame Chocolate" in Japanese. It was decent.. I personally don't like cream so didn't try the cream filled pastry rolls. We hopped to Kuu while waiting in line for our date at another steak house on Valentine day. The restaurant was so packed , but Luckily we quickly got seated at the sushi bar. The only downside is it was way smoky inside. We walked out with the smell of wagyu beef from head to toes. They should have a better ventilation in the restaurant. Other than that, it was such a wonderful night. Nothing to complain about the taste and fish freshness. Most of their dishes are pretty much Japanese modern embedded with little of western culture. This place deserves every single star (5/5). Antonio (our server) was fantastic and really catered to me and my party. We sat at the bar and saw them make the rolls first hand for the other two in the party that opted out of the omakase experience. The omakase experience is $125 per person and it's for 8 courses. We started off with appetizers, then sashimi and nigiri, then the hot plates. Everything was delicious and just got better as the next plate came out. The staff was very accommodating the moment we walked in. We were originally at a table, but for the omakase experience they were able to seat us at the bar. They even gave us two orders of the salmon carpaccio on the house, which was super sweet of them. I absolutely enjoyed everything that was brought to me during my omakase experience, the cocktails were delicious and refreshing, and the sushi was fresh and just so incredible. I'm a bit disappointed, but don't hate it. I want to try KUU again to give it another chance. It wasn't as good as my sister and friends raves about it. Our server was taken by a guy who was really nice, and then another girl took over and she was super sweet and accommodating. It's the food that threw me off. I wanna say first, I was most disappointed with the foie gras. The first round came out COLD. SO COLD. AND WE ALL KNOW THAT FOIE GRAS MUST BE SERVED HOT AND EATEN HOT. So it was disappointing to eat an order of 6 cold foie gras. Eventually we ordered it again later hoping for better foie gras, and it did come out warm this time. (Didn't wanna complain because I didn't wanna give our server a hard time.) The other disappointing dish was the A5 Carpaccio. We agreed it had too much of an overwhelming Curry/Cumin flavor to it. Where it was too overwhelming to a point where you couldn't even enjoy the cut of meat and type of meat itself. The Madai Tiradito was also disappointing. It had way too much sauce on it which overwhelmed everything. I felt like I was eating sauce and no fish. The sauce was way too sweet as well which threw me off. If I were to plate it I would put just a dot of the sauce on it, but having it with a different type of diluted sauce like maybe a ponzu citrus sauce. Those would be my only complaints. Otherwise, I kind of like everything else. It was good. We ordered the hirataki, kanpaccio, hot rock, uni, otoro (and they ran out ): ), miso soup, shrimp tempura, truffle Suzuki. Last night was my second night at KUU (the first being half a year ago), and I wanted so badly for it to be an amazing evening with my man but I was so sadly disappointed. I made a reservation for two at 8:30PM through the OpenTable app about two days prior to our visit. Considering I selected my reason for visiting as a 'date night,' I believed they would have made our experience just fabulous... well it was completely subpar. Upon arriving to KUU, you can either park in the parking garage or valet outside of State Fare Kitchen (just a few steps away from KUU's front door). The inside is honestly gorgeous. As soon as you step in the door, you're greeted by the utmost warm and soothing atmosphere - beautiful yellow box lights hung from the ceiling, soft music, dim corners with different seating around the restaurant, and a collection of aromas meeting your nose. The hostesses were kind and created a pleasant vibe when confirming our reservation. The seating was OK... I was surprised they sat us right in front of the busy walk way from the kitchen to the waitress stand. I assumed they would have given us a more private area, considering we were a couple coming in late and it was slow for a Saturday night. There were seats everywhere... weird. Our waitress was so so sweet, but bless her heart it seemed like she had never waited a table a day in her life. This was only my second time here and the first time for my boyfriend, so we know NOTHING about KUU, their menu, or their style of service. She greeted us, but did not ask to really explain anything on the menu or recommend anything for us to start off with as appetizers. My boyfriend has a special taste for tequilas, which the waitress couldn't name anything for us that the bar had. I ordered their version of a mojito. She comes back 15 minutes later just to tell me they didn't have that tonight... so I have to decide something else to drink, but she didn't bother to leave a drink menu on the table for us so we had to track down another employee to get one. It took nearly 30 minutes just for us to have drinks on the table... and I repeat by this time it was 9PM. The restaurant was slow & quiet! I understand this isn't a five star place, but I could have had two beverages in that time frame it took to get one. When you're paying anywhere from $20-$50 a roll/dish, this service shouldn't even be an option. My man also ordered a beer with salt on the rim, and when she brought it back she overpowered the beer onto the salt rim and the entire beer just turned to fizz and didn't settle for a solid 5 minutes... that's just drink pouring 101! I expect that to happen at Chili's... not at KUU! We ordered the Creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura as our starter along with a dish of shisito peppers. Both dishes were absolutely DELICIOUS! That creamy shrimp was a really fantastic pair with the hot peppers. We ordered the June roll, a spicy tuna roll with a nice crunch to it, as well as an eel roll that had a nice avocado pairing to it (the one good thing the waitress did right was recommend the eel roll to us). We LOVED the rolls. As much as our service really sucked, the food was fantastic! Seems to be a common theme among KUU's reviews - good food, not good service! Lastly, we ordered the beef hot rock at the same time we ordered our rolls. But when we were finished with the rolls, our server forgot we ordered the hot rock and we had to remind her we ordered that about 30 minutes ago. She looked embarrassed and said, "she must have forgot to put it in..." GREAT! We asked for the A5 beef hot rock, which they said they were out of (just another disappointment to add onto the list), so we settled for the $15 akaushi beef hot rock. After we had finished our rolls I wasn't as impressed with it as I was the first time I visited KUU. Not sure if it was the seasoning they paired with it, but the beef just tasted bland to me. I wish I had a more impressive time at KUU, especially considering it was such a special evening for my S/O and I. I can't see us seeking this place out again, but maybe we would've had a better experience if we had a more knowledgable/experienced server. read more

I came in here around 8PM and the restaurant was nearly packed. Luckily we were a party of 2 and were able to be seated fairly quickly. We got seated in Jennifer's section and she was amazing. We came in without really having much of an idea what we were planning on ordering and essentially gave her free reign on what she suggested us to get other than a couple of dishes we really wanted to try(the Sea bass, A5 wagyu hot stone and the foie gras nigiri). Similar to an omakase but trusting the server since you get more of a selection than just the omakase. She went above and beyond and gave us an amazing selection of choices and was very detailed in the description of each dish that came out to us. I would definitely come back again in the future. We even got to try a dish that hasn't even hit the menu yet and i'm definitely waiting to see how the dish evolves before it gets released out to the menu. Everything tasted fresh and was great except for a few things that I didn't find super super interesting. I wasn't a biggest fan of the Madai Tiradito because I felt I wasn't able to taste too much of the fish since I was too focused biting through the candied red quinoa, but that's just a personal thing since I like to focus more on the quality of fish than the rest of the dish. The foie gras nigiri also was just good, but I wouldn't say it's great if you compare it to Uchi's foie gras nigiri which I believe goes thru the salamander and then is torched tableside as well. Another note that I have is that maybe due to the fact that there were a few parties of 8 that came in at the same time as us, service was a little bit slower than I'm used to, but since we weren't rushed for time I find it kind of a blessing. In April 2014 (sorry for the delay), I visited this place before heading out of town. I had read a bit about it, and thought I should definitely give lunch a try. I'm glad I did. Because I wanted to ensure my departure out of town, I was the first to arrive. Parking seems like it has the potential to be confusing, but not so at 11AM. The entrance is also a bit hidden, but just go between the buildings... The bartender was very knowledgeable about the drinks and the food. That is something I definitely appreciate. He was so well-versed that I ordered something other than what I was intending to eat. The bento box was wonderful and quite filing. It also means that I must return to try the items that were "on my list." The specialty cocktail that I had was also great. I think it had ginger in it. So nice, I ate there twice!! Had to come to Houston for work, and the hotel was in walking distance. Right off the bat, I liked the ambiance. If the weather is nice, I recommend sitting in their outdoor patio area. It was late afternoon, so they had twinkly lights throughout the square, and little flickering candles on each of the tables. It was a quiet, relaxed atmosphere! Great if you're traveling solo, or meeting a friend or colleague, or just a casual girls night out! They have a pretty extensive drink menu. I always go for the sake. This time I tried their hot sake one evening and unfiltered sake the next! I prefer the unfiltered! It is served chilled, and tastes milder and sweeter than the typical hot sake. It was delicious! I started out with some pan seared garlic edamame with my sake. One night I got the Seared Peppered Salmon salad with edamame dressing. It was delicious and just the right portion! Both evenings, I got the Rin sushi roll. It has a tempura fried shrimp surrounded by sushi rice with a little cream cheese and avocado inside, then rolled with nori and topped with a spicy aioli and thin slivers of pepper on the top of each slice. Dipped partially into soy sauce, it was just the right combination of spicy, salty, and savory. The nigiri I tried was the akaushi & quail egg (seared thin slice of wagyu beef & over medium quail egg). The flavor was good, however I wasn't as big a fan of the chewy texture of the more raw beef. The sake toro (salmon belly, yuzu kosho, & ikura) was delicious, and the Kani (snow crab). My particular favorites were the ikura (salmon roe) & yuzu tobiko (yuzu flying fish roe). The salmon roe was savory and mild in taste, and the yuzu roe was crunchy, salty, & savory. For dessert, it is worth the wait if you order the ube soufflé! Takes 20-25 min to prepare, and comes out piping hot so I recommend letting it cool down a bit or blow on it before you dive in...so you don't risk burning your taste buds like I impatiently did! It comes with a small cup of coconut cream which I drizzled on top of the soufflé and allowed to soak in. It is sweet but not rich like most desserts that leave you unable to finish it. Small enough portion to be enjoyed by one person. The crispy coconut fries are interesting because they are spicy. Wasabi perhaps? The ube candy bits that come as part of the garnish are sweet and delicate and a little chewy. Note that the large grains of what look like rock candy on your plate are actually sea salt. I was a bit taken by surprise haha. Overall, it was a great way to round out a day filled with conference talks; a quiet setting to rest your mind or clear your head; or a great place to chat and catch up with a friend or coworker! The place is alive with music and small talk throughout and the lighting makes for an intimate setting in a fairly loud restaurant. I'm only giving this place 4 stars because our appetizer took 25 minutes to come and the Bread Pudding dessert was literally a 1in. X 1in. cube that could have been eaten in one bite; nonetheless the drinks were amazing and the service was immaculate. Sushi has to be top 3 in Houston although the edamame and wagyu gyoza were a 3.5/5; not terrible but not amazing. My personal favorite touch was the violinist walking around playing live instrumental versions of hit songs, It tied the restaurant together perfectly as a "pièce de résistance" that i wish every restaurant had. My hubby and I waited a while to try out Kuu. We heard mixed reviews and thought we'd give the restaurant time to work out any kinks they might have had. Fast forward a year or so. It's a Monday after Valentine's, so the restaurant is fairly empty (just the way we want it). You'd think this would give the chef's more time to focus on the details, maybe even get creative, but at the very least... do a good job "plating". I took pictures that night, several of them actually because I couldn't seem to get a good one. Even if the lighting was better, no angle was a good one. Anyway, I don't want to harp on the presentation too much, even though that's part of the reason for the insane prices. Let's talk taste. I'll start with what was good, the Truffle Suzuki. Truffle makes everything better! Unfortunately, that was it. The Chef's Kyushu sashimi was fishy, not to mention the presentation was lacking, and there just wasn't any flavor, not even sea salt. The yellowtail was good, but again, it was poorly presented. Lastly, the thinly sliced wagyu sashimi (can't remember the name) was like the yellowtail, blah. Given all the great pics posted, it's hard to believe I had such a bad experience, but believe me, no one is more disappointed than I was. I will end on a positive note, though. I've eaten here three times and it has been delicious and different all three meals. It's not your typical spicy-mayo covered sushi or expect huge portions of food. The way to experience this type of restaurant is to savor the flavors. Take your time, enjoy the company, beautiful food presentation, and each individual ingredient that the chefs mindfully place on each memorable plate. Parking - 2.5/5 - I've only parked in front but have been lucky to find self parking vs. valet. I think there's a parking structure because of the medical building there and saw some elevators. Not that easy but never looked. Atmosphere - 5/5 - Indoor and outdoor seating and plentinf of tables. Can be quite romantic. Great for big groups too. Cleanliness - 5/5 - I've never used the restrooms but my friend did nd there weren't any complaints. Service - 5/5 - Attentive and was able to give suggestions! Food - 4.5/5 - Remember you're not here for the Texas size portions! As you can see from my pictures a lot of this food is to share and to taste a variety of tongue palettes. I always enjoy food where each dish has its own distinct flavor and every ingredient is purposely placed there to complement each other. View my photos with the names on it. Favorite - Truffle suzuki sushi (this has been all of my friend's favorite too since it's SoooOoo fresh!) It's almost like a cool breeze entered I to our mouth each time we place a piece of sushi inside our mouth. Least favorite - wagyu gyoza (You can't deep fry wagyu! Come on now!) Dessert - Last time I went here I didn't car for the two desserts we got from the menu, however, our waitress mentioned the taro souffle today and WOWzer!! My friend who is not a huge dessert fan took a 2nd bite!! I'd definitely return for that! Overall - 4.5/5 - Overall food experience left a taste in my mouth that I would return and share another experience with another foodie. Yes, it does put a dent in your pocket so surely not a cheap or throw on a pair of jeans and t-shirt meal. My first thoughts about this place were that it was very clean, and had a really good atmosphere. It looked nice all around, and the layout was interesting but efficient. Our server came to us and explained the menu very thoroughly, so I thought that was very kind of her. There were many things on the menu I was confused about, and do know that the portion sizes are extremely small. The food itself tasted very savory. The meat was slightly tough, but the fish was extremely easy to eat and very fresh. The lobster was delicious too! I think that the chefs do a great job with the sauces in particular, and the presentation is absolutely well done. I forgot the names of the dishes, but the ingredients were all put together really well. We also had unagi which was seared beautifully, it was absolutely amazing and I would go back here just for the unagi itself. It was cooked perfectly and brought to the table at a lovely temperature. Amazing. You must get it here if you come here. Please. Overall, I think it's a very flavorful sushi place. Expensive for sure, but I think that it's a nice and solid restaurant. read more

We came here to celebrate two special occasions an anniversary and a birthday. We made reservations and the setting was very modern, clean and inviting. Our waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu and we were offered wonderful suggestions. We practically ordered everything off the menu. We were very pleased and impressed by the presentation and flavors. We loved almost everything and ate enjoyed the portion sizes that allowed us to taste everything. KUU is an upscale Asian focused treasure. We attended a special private event with a preset menu. The Hokkaido scallop was sparse, but flavorful. The cucumber sunomono was a cucumber/seaweed salad that was delicious. Our second course featured a fabulous pepper beef salad and a less impressive seasonal compressed fruit salad. Next up was miso Chilean Seabass with a slightly sweet glaze. Delicious. Equally outstanding was the wag you tataki sliced beef dinner. Pink center and tender. Service was attentive although the kitchen seemed to have some problems synchronizing our dinner. Appetizers and entres were often served separately. As we were sharing, it really wasn't an issue.
