I can't even begin to tell you guys how much I love this place!! I came here to celebrate my birthday with my friends. One of them recommended it to me because she knew how much I love sushi. The restaurant had a very lovely modern, upscale, clean interior decor. It's a perfect place for dinner. We didn't make any reservations but the wait was not long. My friends and I found ourselves some seats at the bar and ordered a few cocktails to help pass the time. As we were seated, our waitress started to explain a few things about the menu which was extremely helpful! Everything looked so good we almost ordered.... all of it. I can easily say that everything tasted amazing. There was nothing that was just "ok." We started off with the Soft Shell Crab Tempura (Softshell crab tempura, roasted tomato, guacamole) and to us it was the perfect dish to start off our dinner. I would have to say that the ingredient that sold this dish was the guacamole because it blended so well with the crab tempura. Our second dish was the Sake Crudo. This was my favorite dish out of the night! Sake Crudo is salmon served with assorted fruits that had been pickled overnight. Basically.... it melted in my mouth and I could have died happy on the spot. Another great thing about this dish was that it was extremely refreshing! You can't get bored at this restaurant because it seems that everything they serve is so unique! Our third, fourth and fifth dish was the Salmon Sashimi, Wagyu Unagi (Texas kobe unagi fruit kimchi emulsion), and the Kuu Makimono (Asian pear yuzu kosh avocado tuna lobster claw meat edamame purée) They were all very delicious! I recommend all of them! The usual sushi restaurants that I'm use to doesn't mix their fish with meat or fruits so each bite made me smile. We ended dinner with the Poseidon Makimono and I loved this roll because it was very flavorful. Since this was my birthday dinner I was treated with dessert on the house which was beautiful and delicious at the same time! My husband is a fisherman so I am a bit of a fish snob. With that being said this place is legit. Food was fresh delicious and served really quickly. Atmosphere was cool (they had a live violinist playing) and the sushi chefs were super friendly. I recommend the soft shell crab and blue fin tuna (if available.) read more

There are no words to describe KUU. With the demise of Cove I was in mourning due to the lack of raw bars, quality sashimi, etc but then there was KUU. If I had to survive on one restaurant in Houston for the rest of my life, it would be KUU. Every single dish we had was better than the last but they were all incredible. The only places i can say rival KUU would be Kata and MF, but in my opinion, KUU is a cut above. John, our server, although fairly new, was thorough, well-trained, patient with my myriad of questions, and knowledgeable. The food though was the shining star. Fresh. Inventive. Ethereal. One of the most perfect meals I have ever had. My only regret is that I couldn't eat more. Lunch Review: Came here like a group of 8 co-workers. Loved the ambiance and decor. They had a large variety of dishes ranging from sushi to noodles, rice bowls and more. We started with edamame (which had a little kick to them) and the shishito peppers (this is my favorite appetizer anywhere right now!). Because it was lunch, many of us decided to get the bento box. Amazing. I've never seen a prettier, fancier bento box. All the food had great flavor and some unexpected but delicious ones like butternut squash miso soup. I love, love, love the miso black cod! I have never had a fish as delicious in my life! With that said, if you intend to order multiple dishes, eat this one last because it will set the standard. It's flavorful, moist, tender and it tastes so buttery (doesn't actually have a lot of butter, just a natural flavor characteristic of the fish). I tried two sushi rolls, the truffle suzuki & the kuu. Both were delicious and fresh! I think that what was unique about these rolls is that the flavor was such that by the last roll you weren't tired of the flavor. I don't remember the names of the desserts I had, but one was mostly chocolate based with a black sesame paste and the other had coconut ice cream, fried green tea and tiny little donuts with a yellow sauce on top. My boyfriend and I both loved the coconut dessert because of the variation in flavors, textures and temperatures which keeps the dish interesting throughout. The chocolate was good too, but we felt that there was nothing to break up the "chocolatyness". If you are going with another person I recommend ordering multiple plates and sharing to try different dishes, this is what my boyfriend and I did. The dishes are small! Our waiter was great and so was the service overall. The manager even came over to greet us when he learned it was our first visit through the waiter. Some of the small plates we ordered we thought were just okay, nothing was bad that we tried. Some dishes, as previously mentioned, were delectable. I think it is hit and miss, but would recommend asking the waiters for their opinions and let them know what you like! Had a fantastic Omakase service (1/15/16) this past Friday at KUU. I call KUU "the hidden gem of Memorial City area..." It really is one of the best restaurants in our city, but doesn't get as much press as it should. Executive Chef Addison and his team did an outstanding job of plating fresh, creative and delectable dishes - and timed right. That's no easy task to pull off during an Omakase service, but their chefs do it! Also my server Cody was superior in every way. He was very knowledgeable about each plate served, super friendly (but so friendly that he was bothersome)... With a great attitude overall - and most importantly made sure I received 5 star customer service. And, he's a damn good speller. PS Server Tracy did a great job too. We got off to a very rocky start here. I had called and made reservations for a table, but when we arrived we were told no tables were available and we'd have to sit at the sushi bar. I explained the whole reason I made a reservation was to get a table, so they said if we waited at the bar for ten minutes they'd have a table for us. It was a very strange interaction, and frankly when the table was ready in five minutes, we felt like they simply were trying to not have to give us the table for some reason. Anyway, it was better from that point. We started with the much recommended Kanpaccio, and it did not disappoint. The flavors were sublime, bright and between the Texas orange and yuzu, the acidity from the citrus flavors were absolutely delicious! We didn't even need to use any soy sauce/wasabi mixture, like we normally do, because these flavors were so clear and clean. This can be said for most of the food here. You don't need to overly adulterate it w/ soy sauce. Next we had three rolls: Poseiden, Kuu and the Truffle Suzuki. They were all wonderful in their own right, but hands down our favorite was the Suzuki. The combination of the yellowtail fish, jalepeno and truffle vinaigrette just melted in your mouth. Big up for the lobster claw "balls" on top of the Kuu, however, and those Asian pears-yum! We finished with a hot dish, the Crispy Duck. It was ok, nothing special. The compressed apple was quite a unique idea though - looked like a piece of pineapple. We also tried their brownie dessert, which was art on a plate!! It was a bit "earthy" tasting for me with the sesame seeds, when I would have preferred more chocolate notes to come through. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive, and everyone there tried to tell you a little something about the dish so you could learn, which I appreciated. Very immersive experience. Went here for date night on our "Sushi Tour of Houston." We are on the hunt for our favorite sushi restaurant and are trying out all the places on the best of sushi here. We thought that the appetizers were comparable to price and quality as Uchi. They offer more roll options than Uchi too . Mixed drinks were also very good. All around a very good place. Our total bill was less than if we had gone to Uchi and we felt very satisfied. But honestly if I wanted to spurge and go all out, Uchi would be our fav in Houston. But for a slightly cheaper price and very good quality I would definitely recommend Kuu! read more

I went on Saturday evening for dinner, we didnt have a reservation so we sat at the bar, which was fine. Next time we'll remember to call ahead. Service was exceptional, our waitress was sweet, knowledgeable and just the right level of attentive. She made wonderful recommendations and let us know that each dish is small plates/tapas style with 4-6 bites per dish, which helped us make our selection. The food was phenomenal. We ordered the shishito peppers, the duck, two rolls, and some sashimi. Sashimi was very good and fresh. The duck was perfectly cooked and spiced. The rolls really stole the show, they are perfect just the way they are - no extra sauce or spice needed. They are not served with an overwhelming amount of rice or sauces, which lets you really taste the fish. They were possibly the best rolls I've ever had. This place has Uchi prices without the Uchi vibes! Houston is saturated with sushi spots so if you are going to charge Uchi prices, at least make an attempt to uograde your game! They are located off the feeder of I-10 and Gessner next to State Fare and in front of the Memorial City Memorial Hermann facing I-10. EDIT: Not the best sushi I've ever had anymore. Good quality sushi and great service. Overall best sushi I've ever had. Every slice of sashimi, fresh and beautifully arranged. Excellent, personable service and fun seating options with high-end ambiance (think ultra-lounge without the music). I generally don't enjoy Sushi. Sashimi is all prepared the same but you pay an arm and a leg for often times a game of freshness routlette. The rolls all start to taste the same with the wasabi mayo, unagi sauce, and the slight tartness from the sushi rice. These flavors overpower the subtle flavors of fresh fish (or hide old fish). But Kuu managed some very fancy cohesive flavors (read the menu for yourself). I was skeptical of Kuu, restaurants in high traffic areas generally don't maintain a high level of consistency or service; they know they'll have traffic regardless. But I was pleasantly surprised. They seated us at a hybrid traditional sit on the floor but it was carpeted with little wooden seats to lean our backs against (see the photos on the website). Our server was friendly and quick to take our orders. Creamy Rock Shrimp aka Popcorn Shrimp: 5 of 5. If you want high-end popcorn shrimp, this was great. We ordered this for the kids. It was warm, not heavy or greasy tasting (but fills you up easily) and slightly glazed. Kuu Roll: 4 of 5. So many flavors come together in this. Asian pear, yuzu kosho, edamame puree, avocado, lobster claw meat. Theres a slight refreshing flavor of the asian pear and yuzu that I've never quite experienced before. Truffle Suzuki: 3 of 5. Yellowtail with Jalapeno is my favorite. The truffle vinaigrette somewhat overpower the others but not by much. I think this is more of a personal preference. Poseidon: 3 of 5. Background: Celebrated a friend's birthday during Happy Hour at Kuu. Atmosphere: Nice outdoor seating area with heat lamps - since it was cold the outdoor section seemed closed. A nice Happy Hour Lounge area near the entrance but got conflicting instructions from staff whether the area is for HH or to be only used as a waiting area. Cannot accommodate large groups. Groups of more than 8 need to reserve a private room ahead of time. Would have given it 4 stairs if seating was less of an issue. Service: Staff was friendly. Food and drinks came promptly. Taste: Ordered quite a few items on the HH food menu and a couple of specialty cocktails. The chicken karaage was delicious! Parking: Ample parking both outdoor and garage parking. We went out to celebrate and enjoy some delicious sushi I heard so many good things but I was so disappointed.. I was going to give it 2 stars but because our waitress was trying really hard to make us happy and she did a excellent job it merits a 3 star rating! What a disappointment! I called three times to check the prices and once i got there they over charged me. Whenever I come here, I sit at the sushi bar because the sushi chefs are fun to talk to and it's interesting watching them make the sushi and I can just order with the chefs. My favorite sushi is hands down the sake toro. I order about 10 every time. Everything on this menu is worth trying. They change a page on menu every season to keep things different. I especially like the Japanese breakfast and the duck dish ( I don't remember the name) Parking is easy, there's parking right next to the restaurant in the garage. The ambience is romantic and chill. The staff is friendly. They describe each dish as they bring it out so you don't have to sit there and guess what it is. Came in here for a quick dinner with a vendor (yes they paid, which was awesome) and was pretty impressed. Had the salmon and sea bass for sashimi and the quality and quantity was fantastic. The garnish was actually a great addition to the quality of fish. Also had the Poseidon roll (very highly recommended) and a derivation of that roll called the Suzuki(?). Both were wrapped in fantastically prepared rice and flavored so well that you don't need the soy sauce. Speaking of, their soy sauce is pre-wasabi'd. Which was just right for me, and they probably save a lot of money on wasted food this way. They had extra wasabi, which would have been too intense for me. Good quality ginger too. Also had the signature KUU roll, and the pear didn't really work. A little bland, sweet and flat on texture. I'd get two Poseidon rolls instead. Finished off with a green tea chai, which was served cool and in a martini glass: it worked. KUU is amazingly exceptional--probably the best sushi place in Houston (along with Uchi). Our server was Kevin and he was so helpful and patient while we decided on what to get. His recommendations came out to be so delicious. My favorite is the Hamu Yuzu roll, as soon as you bite into it there's a burst of citrus flavor that dances around in your mouth. The Wagyu Flat Iron, Poseidon, and June Roll were also 5 star quality and presentation. The staff was very attentive; from the water refills to the Manager coming to see how your dining experience was. I would definitely come back for my sushi cravings. Came here for Valentines day dinner, we sat at the bar since we made last minute reservations. The service was great, and the food came out in a decent time manner. All the dishes tasted really fresh and the flavors blende very well together. They gave use half a roll of KUU for free, which was really nice of them and tasted quite fresh with the pear in it. We ordered: Soft shell crab tempura - great but can be more flavorful Truffle Suzuki- a yellowtail roll with strip bass. The sauce had truffle oil in it and was a bit tangy Poseidon - had bit of a cruch, with the same sauce as the Truffle Suzuki For nigiris we order, the O-toro, salmon and something the server recommended that was also fatty like the other two (sorry can't remember the name). But the o-toro was amazing it just melts in your mouth. Ended the dinner with both the brownie dessert and the macaroon. They were both alright, nothing to die for. I came with my parents on a Sunday lunch for my mom's birthday, and it was really enjoyable! The flavor of all the dishes we got were good-- very delicate and well-balanced. The serving sizes were what I expected, but are definitely on the smaller side. The rolls are much more substantial than the hot or cold tastings. Out of the dishes we got, my favorites were the scallop and bacon wrapped seabass and the sakana nabe. Even though everything tasted good, nothing particularly jumped out at me as being mind-blowing. The service was very good. Our waters were always filled and our server was very attentive. We even received a dish on the house to try! Tip: you can taste the sake before you order it by the glass. We spent about $150 for 4 people. On Sundays, they also have a prix fixe menu for $49 per person. Now let's dig into the food here!!! Truffle Suzuki Roll -- OMG this was so good that we ordered it twice for the table. It was so light & refreshing. The truffle sauce was delicious. Foie Gras -- Another item we had to get 2x's. It was torched perfectly and so flavorful. Miso Cod -- Very similar to Nobu. It has a nice caramelized crust & super flaky. This was tasty! Nigiri -- Uni, otoro, sake toro, kunsei, hamachi, kanpachi, hirame, madai, & unagi (we probably ordered more & don't remember) -- I do, however, remember my friend and I tasting our first piece of sushi and going, "Ouuuu this is so good!" Then our eyes lit up as we kept tasting and eating more & more nigiri pieces. To our surprise, it was all extremely delicious. And we're very picky sushi eaters. Ube Soufflé -- This was amazing! The whole table enjoyed it. Red Bean Cheesecake -- My favorite dessert the whole night. It wasn't overly sweet and had true red bean flavor. Bread Pudding -- This was so yummy as well. Yet none of these are reason enough to go. Go for the amazing food, the presentation, the adult but still family friendly environment. Went for lunch. Opted to sit outside. Restaurant is really nice inside, and there's a large patio area for those who prefer fresh air dining (especially now). Our waitress recommended the yellowtail appetizer, which was a specialty, and unfortunately it did not resonate with me. Parmesan and raw fish sounded questionable, but I'll try anything twice so I went for it. Their yellowtail tasted fishy almost cured, and was mostly purple. Never seen this and yellowtail is my favorite AND I eat a LOT of sushi (MF, Uchi, Kata Robata, Nobu, etc), so this combo with the Parmesan was something I couldn't stomach (literally) - so we sent it back. We had tempura and 2 rolls. They were decent, nothing Id come back for unfortunately. And it was not cheap. For those prices I'd much rather drive to one of the aforementioned places. read more

I ordered the salmon which was not good at all (not fresh, tasted like it was frozen) and the otorro tuna which was tough. The chopped scallop nigiri was not fresh. Also did not have salmon belly or uni. It's also really expensive than better/fresher sushi bars. Save your money and find a better sushi bar. The Izakaya and eat there. read more
