I wish I could give it 4.5. I went today for my birthday. Just me and a friend. My plan for my birthday was to stuff myself full of Sushi. We tried to go to Domo's who had a 2.5 hour wait for Sushi. (and closed in 1.25 hours. Closed forever as of tomorrow btw) So I decided we'd check out Kyoto Ka. I'm really glad we did! We went around 9 on a Friday and were seated right away. It was spic and span clean. Even the restrooms. Our waitress was really sweet, attentive and funny. She didn't hover but we got everything in a timely manner too. Okay, regarding the menu; I loved the photos. I really did. I like my sushi with descriptions and photos if I can get them. I don't really eat anything spicy or fried. (weird) I do like to kind of know what I'm getting, but will always take recommendations. But then I can see it! I don't know. Weird but yay for their menu. I had the Asparagus Beef Roll as an appetizer and ... Meh. It was.. okay I guess. The sauce was a little to gravyish and the beef was not too great. Not warm. Not cold. The beef was a little dry. Wouldn't get it again. My Sushi Rolls however were sooo goood. My yellowtail roll was nicely rolled. Th texture was fantastic and the temperature was good too. Seaweed was fresh and crispy. The yellowtail fish was great. Buttery soft as always. Then I had the Rainbow Roll. It was my first time having the rainbow roll. (I love eel and yellow tail so much I just go straight for them.) I really liked it. The fish tasted fresh, the textures were good. Also rolled nicely and stayed together when I dipped it upside down in soy sauce. Fantastic. Then was the Pretty Woman Roll. I'me weird with fruit. I like it alone and not with any meat or with a meal so I was a little apprehensive about the kiwi. I should not have been. Totally complementary to the Salmon. I love a roll with cream cheese where you can taste more than just cream cheese. I had one more roll. (I said I wanted to stuff myself full of Sushi. I succeeded.) It was the Dragon Roll. Here's when I got my eel. So eel is a cooked fish. This roll also has crab and avocado. These three combined make for this warm-ish delish soft melt in your mouth fantastical taste that is ridiculous. And the softness to it is fine because there's cucumber and asparagus in there to still keep it a little snappy. And the fantastic seaweed. I also always get hot sake. Most places it tasted like vanilla and turpentine. Somehow I still love it. Here its warm and strong but has a mild flavor that was really quite quite nice. I've had alot of bad Sake, this was a great surprise. So in general, it was great. Everyone there was nice, it was so clean, and the sushi was great. Just take that non appetizing appetizer off the menu. The kids in here were really well behaved. Much better than the table of hipsters that came in later with the one who kept licking his palm over and over. Weird. read more

I worked at Kyoto Ka for almost 2 and 1/2 years. In July I moved to Chicago. In the city I have worked at a couple high end sushi restaraunts and ate at all the amazing sushi bars in the city. I have to be honest and say I miss Kyoto Ka sushi. Joe is an amazing owner and seen first hand that he preps and serves the best fish in the city. His rice is not overly vinegary, the avocado is soft. His fish is fresh and no bones. His spicy crab is one of a kind. They don't have it out here. His spicy tuna and salmon is not the cheap fish that all the other places in Toledo use... I know. My partner in crime and best friend Sam is an awesome server. I miss working there. Kimmi, Joes wife is there day in day out as well helping with hosting and running food. Joe is a great owner. The customers come first and quality is very important. They are the best in Toledo and better than a lot of places in Chicago. When I come home, I try and go when I can but don't always make it. Next time I'm home, Ill be back and cannot wait for a kani su salad, Joe roll and spicy tiger roll! read more

I will agree with another reviewer who said that this place is very average. Actually, I would say a little below average. I realize that the Japanese offerings in Toledo are slim, but this place simply does not make the grade. Even without comparing Kyoto Ka to other Japanese restaurants I've sampled in other cities, I would say that this place is overpriced and kind of "blah." I expect value for my dollar. I left this restaurant feeling kind of cheated. I spent the kind of money one would expect to pay for a decent meal in Toledo, but what I got was pretty much the same as Magic Wok. I'm not kidding. I wasn't in the mood for sushi, so I had one of their signature dishes. Their menu description sounded appealing, but that didn't pan out. They brought me battered, fried shrimp coated in a thick, syrupy sauce that tasted just like general tso at a cheap chinese restaurant. On the side was about a 1/4 cup of dry, old rice and limp vegetables with no seasoning. My wife had yaki udon, which also had very little seasoning and just didn't taste like it should. We've eaten in a variety of Japanese restaurants in multiple cities and this one was just disappointing. On the bright side, the atmosphere was nice. I've been coming here fairly regularly for over a year now. Although they don't offer much in the way of traditional sushi but have a large quantity of Americanized sushi, what they have is still consistently the best in that category, and the pricing is reasonable (I'm looking at you, Domo). I've only ever been disappointed once: I ordered a seafood delight entree and it was not good at all. Their chicken katsu is great. The service has always been wonderful. read more

Went to Kyoto ka last night on a friend's recommendation. He was right when he said it was the best sushi in Toledo. My girlfriend and I split some rolls, had a piece of sushi, miso soup, and some saki. We went on a Friday night and had great service. Never felt rushed nor ignored. The tuna seemed to be the freshest around. Really enjoyed the whole experience, can't wait to go back again. read more

The Sushi is ok. It's not amazing. Go for crazy rolls and apps. A little pricy for the quality of the rolls. Sat at the sushi bar once and the sushi chef wasn't in a great mood. Co workers go in for lunch probably twice a month, so I've been many times over the last two years. Usually get the hot stone bowl now and not bother with the sushi any more. read more

Kyoto Ka is one of my favorite sushi places in the Toledo area. I never expected Sylvania to have such a Japanese jewel hidden among the chains on Central Avenue, but this is it. The sushi is fresh and consistently good, the service prompt (as the place is almost never busy), and the prices good. My favorite is the Firecracker roll, but I have liked just about everything I have tried. I would skip desert (the fried ice cream isn't all that great) and fill up on the sushi and appetizers. read more

Kyoto Ka is a very nice Toledo spot for sushi. As i was sitting down, one of the sushi rollers greeted me with a huge smile and welcomed me to the restaurant. I was very satisfied with the politeness of the staff and the good mode they put me in. I sat at the sushi bar and watched the sushi rollers get to work. It was very entertaining and fun. I stayed on the sushi theme as i ordered the Double Dragon and Volcano rolls, respectively. Both were delicious and filling. Excellent food, happy staff and pleasant sushi bar. The restaurant is not very big and somewhat packed, but nevertheless a great spot for food. read more

Toledo, obviously, is not a haven for sushi. Kyoto Ka, however, is pretty good. Service is solid and the staff, specifically the sushi chefs, are pretty friendly. I've been to a few places in the Toledo area for sushi and I'd say that Kyoto Ka is probably the best of the bunch. It's a bit pricey, buy you're getting pretty decent quality for the price you're paying. I go back because I enjoy it, will continue to do so while I'm still in the Toledo area. read more

My family and I have been long time fans of Kotobuki. However, with the opening of Kyoto Ka, we have found an excellent Japanese restaurant right on Central Avenue and closer to home. The decor of the restaurant is very nice and is surprising given the generic building outside. The sushi choices are numerous, well prepared, and unbelievably delicious. The fact that Kyoto Ka doesn't attract a larger crowd is unusual to me, given the fact that I have never been disappointed by the high quality food and customer service. My favorite dish is actually the desert, the Tempura Ice Cream. I have never eaten a similar desert before and always leave satisfied. Simply put, Kyoto Ka might well be Toledo's best kept secret. read more

Negative reviews of Kyoto Ka are totally off base in my opinion. I have had the good fortune of having sushi from across the country (Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver, Chicago, Washington DC, etc) and I can honestly say that Kyoto Ka consistently serves up some of the freshest sushi around. The quality is consistent, the service good and the ownership the friendliest around. I dine here about twice a month and always look forward to going back. read more

So I really don't know if I should start comparing sushi in Toledo to sushi I've eaten other places. It's unfair to compare this restaurant to a place like Akai Hana in Columbus. The rolls at Kyoto really try to be unique. The effort is there but the execution can be a bit sloppy. Last time I went the rolls I ordered lacked clean flavor. Everything was smothered in eel sauce or spicy mayo. Don't get me wrong, I love sauce but lately I've been craving simpler sushi. Kyoto is a fine restaurant. Nicely run with friendly staff but the sushi really isn't anything special. Pretty standard stuff. read more

Great sushi option in Toledo. The fish is fresh and the prices are reasonable. My complaint with this place was I called in advance to make a reservation for my party of 4 and when we arrived they said our table wouldn't be ready for a while. We had to sit at the bar on the corner (so it wasn't so bad). They made up for it by bringing us some edamame and salads on the house. The sushi came out on a "bridge" which was cool. We also ordered the roll on fire which was a unique twist. I will definitely go back to this centrally-located spot. I would also consider pick-up since the service was on the slower side. read more

I came with friends to help celebrate a friend's birthday. I haven't been here before and I was very impressed the sushi chefs greeted everyone as they walked in. I gotten there a few minutes early and started the dinner off with the edamame which was perfectly steamed and salted, I ordered a bottle of Nagori Sake which compliments the New York Roll and the Dragon roll I had for dinner. And the fried rice is excellent! Many items to choose from! Hot Saki, cold Japanese beer........ And a very friendly atmosphere! I enjoy sitting at the Sushi Bar, so I can watch and learn the techniques! It is art! Fun to observe and then you get to enjoy a great meal! I've never been a sushi fan because I assumed it's all raw fish! I don't like most fish period! However, I've recently been trying new foods and I've started to crave sushi (the rice, seaweed, and wasabi are what I really crave) so for my step moms birthday today, she recommended Kyoto Ka, apparently it's her and my dads favorite! I got them what they asked for and made a couple choices for myself. The New York roll might be one of my favorite things that I know I will be craving for often! Also the calamari tempura roll! So so good! I've always stayed clear of anything with "crab" in it cause I know is imitation, but I really liked spicy California roll! Didn't taste like crab, but it also didn't taste like fake crab! I highly recommend this place! Only complaint I have is that I wasn't provided ginger or wasabi with my order, so I had to go to Kroger to buy some because the restaurant is closed between 2:30-4! Next time I will know to ask for some with my order! Still 5 stars! Very very good! read more

Best sushi experience in Sylvania! I had the Rock 'n' Roll and my girlfriend had the Spider Roll. They were delicious. We also had a glass of the apple sake which tasted great. I even hesitate to give them as many as two stars. I've dined in and carried out food from here and I am not impressed. First and foremost, the sushi rolls have great flavor, but they are incredibly overpriced and terribly small. Basic rolls like an Alaskan Roll (salmon, avocado, cucumber) run you about $9 and specialty rolls average over $15. Also, they charge you $1 for a small, half full cup of spicy mayo on the side and $1 if you want to make a roll spicy. Every other sushi place I've been to are willing to do both things for you for free. Additionally, the staff has been unfriendly each time I've been in and don't mind showing their displeasure when you write $0 on the tip line for a carry out order. If I'm doing the work of coming to get my food, I shouldn't have to tip. Go to Rice Blvd. if you're looking for a better sushi experience, unless you don't mind dropping $35 and leaving hungry. read more

We do not live in Toledo, but we had heard about this place and since we had to make a trip to West Toledo, we decided to try it. We both had the luncheon Bento Boxes although we chose two different beef selections. We were so pleased with everything from the Miso soup served hot and quickly to the large selection of items in the box and generous portions of each. The server was friendly and we didn't have to ask for refills on tea either. We love Sushi so I am sure the next time we are in the area we will have another meal and take home a selection of Sushi too. We'll definitely be back and will recommend it to others in our area of Northwest Ohio. read more
