I usually love going to kyoto ka because their sushi is so good, but tonight the service was terrible. Our server, Stephen, didn't check on our table for 45 mins and we waited for over an hour and a half to get our sushi. When i asked him how much longer for our food he said he didn't know. I then told him that we had put our order in almost an hour ago and I asked if he could check on our order. He proceeded with "I can try". 15 mins later our sushi comes out and it is great but we ate it within 5 mins because of how starving we were. Stephen never apologized for the wait or had warned us that the kitchen was backed up. When we got the check, I was expecting to be given a discount or something to accommodate our long wait but there was nothing. I was very disappointed because i had never experienced this type of service in my life & it disappointed me because I am a server myself! Sad! read more

Nestled in the tiny corner of Avenue Plaza is Kyoto Ka, another great local Japanese eatery in T-town. Finding it may be difficult at first, but the smell emanating from Cake in a Cup, which is conveniently located next door, will lead you straight to KK's front doors. It could have been the late lunch hour, but my dining companion and I were scratching our heads over the sole patron there at the time. The food was certainly fresh and delicious. My salmon bento may not be the best one I've had in Toledo, but the fish itself was still succulent and tasty. The sushi was also just as good. The moderate prices and the friendly service should draw in more customers too -- one would think. Whatever the case may be, KK is a good addition to my list of sushi bars in town. Had I been more adventurous, I would have ordered the Rock & Roll and Harry Potter rolls, but that just simply means that a return visit is in order. Korean staples such as bulgogi and bibimbap are also offered on the menu, as well as mochi ice cream and tempura ice cream to clean your palate. Personally, I'd skip the dessert offerings and head next door for some sugar rush-inducing cupcakes :) read more

Let me preface this review by saying that I do not eat sushi and I do not care for sushi, but my boyfriend does. This place gets great reviews because of his comments on the sushi and my love for the waiter at Kyoto Ka. He is really super nice and funny and makes the trip worth it. I'm a bit conflicted on how to rate Kyoto Ka. Overall, I had a good experience so I didn't feel like 3 stars was enough, but 4 seemed too high. I'd honestly give a 3 and half if I could. Here are the pros: The place is a lot nicer looking on the inside than it is on the outside. And our waitress was really nice and understanding even though we were an indecisive bunch and kept asking for things. And she was nice enough to split the bill for us. The house salad portion was bigger than other sushi places I've been too, but it was mostly lettuce (but did include some cucumbers and a tomato). The hwe dup bap (Korean Chirashi) and sushi were very fresh and tasty. As far as rolls go, the volcano roll stood out in my mind- it had a little kick to it! And the King Salmon and Ninja roll also had a lot of sushi pieces. The dongkatsu (Chicken Cutlet) was crisp and crunchy and pretty good. The prices are comparable to other nice sushi places. Some things that were average: The miso soup was a little more fishy than most other miso soups I've had. Not a bad thing but just different if you're expecting something different. The tempura appetizer was ok. The piece seemed to have a lot of batter and it didn't quite seem like the batter was fully cooked because it was a bit mushy towards the center. The orange chicken was really salty, even for Chinese food. But it was nicely balanced with the white rice. The bibimbap portion (not the dolsot one) seemed a bit small compared to the dolsot portion. read more

Hands down for the BEST & FRESHEST sushi in town!!! I've grown up eating sashimi and sushi from the east coast to the west, and for Toledo, Ohio...it doesn't get any better. They have a huge variety of rolls....raw or cooked. Personally, the raw-er the better. My boyfriend and I freq this place at least once a week--if not more. He never knew what good sushi (should I say QUALITY sushi) was until we started dating. Now he can't get enough. We are always satisfied with our lunch/dinner here. Our meals often include a selection of their rolls (kiss of fire, paradise, double dragon, spicy tuna, spider, etc)--only cooked roll we will have is with eel or soft shell crab--to their chirashi or Korean chirashi...a generous selection of sashimi over sushi rice. The best thing about kyoto ka is that they always have fresh sea urchin and is the only place in Toledo that carries belly tuna (o'toro) The staff is very friendly and chef Joe (the owner) really takes great care in preparing his food and sushi!! The prices is reasonable, roughly the same as any Japanese restaurant around town, BUT you get what you pay for--quality!! I really don't understand the negative reviews other than maybe it being busy on a weekend? I love Sushi. I travel A LOT for business and eat Sushi almost everywhere I go because my wife doesn't like it so I eat it when I am traveling and go to places she likes when I am with here. I went on a Tuesday night, there were 4 parties at tables and the Sushi Bar was empty. I was buy myself and sat down in front of the two Sushi specialist behind the bar. I like sitting at the Sushi Bar and watching them make my stuff. I ordered a Tuna Roll and a mixture of Tuna, Snapper and Sea Bass Sushi pieces. All of it was good. I was actually a little taken aback by the amount of fish used on each piece of Sushi. It draped onto the plate on both ends of the rice ball and was cut a little thicker than I have ever had at a Sushi Restaurant. Between the length and thickness of the slice of fish I would guess each one was 2x the amount of fish on most pieces of sushi I have eaten. Getting a lot would not matter if it wasn't good...and it was. I can't speak to any of the Japanese or Chinese entrees as all I had was Sushi, but I can say that I was satisfied and would not hesitate to go back for Sushi. read more

Very very average. Good effort but still average. I can't blame Kyoto Ka completely though since, well, we are talking about a sushi restaurant just a mile away from cornfields. Side note: When I was home last, I read an article in The Blade about how Toledo is booming with Japanese restaurants - around 20 or so now. They ranked Kyoto Ka pretty high so out of those 20, if this is the best Toledo can offer, then what the hell, eat there. Better than not getting exposed to the cuisine all together, right? The salad dressing was tasty, more sweet and sesame than tart and vinegar-y. Pass on the nigiri or sashimi since the fish isn't fresh but give the rolls and noodle dishes a shot. Enjoyed Frogtown Foodie Fun Friday with a Fantastic Firecracker roll! Dang...can't utter another F word until Monday after that one!!! Vegetable Miso is also pretty satisfying ((really great mushrooms, YUM!!)). The boss had the Playboy roll which was decent but when placed next to the one mentioned previously (all out of F words, remember??), it was awarded third place. Salad had a ginger dressing that carried a nice spicy little zing I've not experienced before. Service was super quick and neighborly (really needed a couple f words there...located some synonyms though). Parking garage right across the street, $2 for lunch. Reserved parking until around the third level...just a heads up. Business casual atmosphere but I pulled it off with jeans and a button up. Being new to Sushi in general I have never been to this place before, however I am pleased with everything I have encountered here tonight. Again I'm very new to sushi and will NEVER eat any raw or uncooked seafood so for the most part I'm sure I will never be an adventitious sushi eater, lol tonight I got the California Roll & the Crunchy California Roll both of which were fantastic in every way. My daughter got a California roll and a Yellow Stone Roll, after removing the top two layers which was some kind of egg cake and then we believe the other was spicy crab she enjoyed the rest of it. Our server was very new and this was her first night without a trainer and that being said she was very sweet and tried her best to answer all our questions and as I said I'm very new to sushi so I had quite a few. Came here with the rents for their first time trying sushi, and it was prefect considering the large menu and variety of things to try here! We recently traveled to Kyoto Ka on a Sunday and ordered an eel roll, the Joe roll (tuna/salmon), and the flaming Hawaiian volcano roll. The volcano roll was served on fire, which is why we ordered it. We found the fish to be fresh and the rolls were decent enough, although we felt the portions did not justify the cost as compared to Rice Blvd. Even though we thought Kyoto Ka may just be one step above in quality, it doesn't justify the drive out there, although if we lived close by it would probably be a perfectly suitable place to visit regularly. One thing that intrigued us and may warrant a second visit are the rolls which feature fresh fruit. Service was top-notch. read more

Kyoto Ka is my favorite - the trusty companion I can always return to for great sushi. Because the sushi is so good, I have never ordered an entree. They are a little bit more expensive than some other sushi restaurants, but I have eaten here at least six times and I've never been disappointed. Minus one bad experience with service, it has otherwise always been top notch, whether the restaurant is busy or slow. (The bad experience was with a server that was probably new and couldn't handle it or didn't care - and I haven't seen that person again since.) The Joe Roll is my favorite. read more

Back in Toledo we began patronizing Kotobuki, one of only two places you could get sushi at the time as I remember. My husband and I used to love coming here but the last few times we've been the service has been terribly slow. We came for dinner this evening and despite the crowd we braved a wait. We eventually walked out after waiting at the front in a crowd of several other people who several servers passed by and no one even took any of our names for a wait list. I don't generally post reviews but I had to for this restaurant as the sushi was the worst I'd eaten. We ordered the beast roll, hawaiin volcano roll, and diablo roll. The beast roll did not taste fresh at all, the shrimp tempera tasted old and there was hardly any of the sweet sauce. The Hawaiian volcano roll tasted completely bland, probably because the fire burnt off all that cheese since it wouldn't put out after several minutes. I had to blow on it to put it out. The one roll that was good was the diablo which is why I gave this 2 stars instead of 1. Besides the food, the service was very slow. Ater receiving the appetizer fairly quickly, it took about 45 mins-1 hr to receive our sushi order. read more

I was on the fence about giving this place one or two stars. I went with two because, although the portions were very small, the sushi itself was tasty and although we had a poor server, most of the staff was hard working. Also, the decor is very nice. The main problem I had was, from the moment I arrived with my husband and son, it was as if we were a bother. After a chilly greeting we got the only available table in the restaurant which was by the kitchen. We don't mind that because we were happy to be seated. From there, it went down hill. We seemed to have a very inexperienced male server who couldn't really be bothered to give us a moment of his time. The miso soup was awful. It sat in front of the empty chair side of the table where it was ignored for 40 minutes until the bus boy grabbed it on his way to the kitchen. There was no chance to tell someone it tasted bad. We were in the most conspicuous table by the kitchen. It was right on the main traffic aisle for servers so it should have been easy to wait on us, yet when we all needed refills (tiny glasses by the way) and our server would just walk by us without even looking at us. Eventually the busboy came and brought my son a refill without a word and once again as if he was in a relay race, even though all of our glasses were empty. When I finally got our servers attention I told him we had been waiting an hour, he just nervous laughed. I did tell him about the soup I had and he agreed to take it off the bill. After we waited an hour and 5 minutes, I heard a very good waitress tell the couple next to us that the restaurant was aware of their wait and would be getting them complimentary edamame. That table was sat 10 minutes AFTER us. I was livid. As that waitress was passing us I said "We were here ten minutes before them but we'll just naw on our arms." Now I admit that was directed at the wrong person, she was clearly a hard worker, but I am a diabetic so I was "hangry" at that point and it was beyond frustrating to be so hungry and have to listen to the table after us get the concern and attention we were denied. She came back to tell us we were getting edamame too. (Don't ask me where our server was, we barely saw him on the floor.) And in actuality, I didn't want the edamame, I wanted someone to CARE that we had waited over an hour for 4 simple orders of sushi (3 crunchy cali rolls and a salmon roll.) Shortly after that we were served our sushi without so much as one word of apology even though we arrived around 7:10 and were served at 8:30. The owner, who had passed us a million times as though we were invisible, never came over the the table once. We are not unreasonable, if they had said they got slammed all at once and at least acknowledged us, I would have been unhappy about the wait but at least I would have felt they cared about their customers and were doing all they could. While the food was ok, the portions were absolutely ridiculously chintzy compared to other sushi places I have been to, and I have been to Sushi joints in NY, Los Angeles, London and Vancouver, so I have a lot to compare it too. Kroger grocery has better Sushi. I wasn't expecting the sushi to be as fresh as near the ocean, but I certainly didn't expect it to be so pathetically small and sliced nearly as thin as a pringle. How I dislike cheapos. You could see the seaweed through the thin layer of rice. Our bill came to 38 dollars, I gave the server $50. (I can't NOT tip) and we left hungry. Worse, we left feeling undervalued for our hard earned money. I will never go back. read more

I am new to Toledo and this was my first time getting sushi here. I have had the good fortune of living in 2 cities previously with excellent sushi (most recently Chicago) so maybe that's why I wasn't as impressed as other reviewers. I ordered takeout but the ambience seemed nice. Portions were reasonable and I did like the rice to fish ratio in their rolls- they definitely didn't pile on the rice to beef up the portions. My spicy tuna roll was fine, except half of the fish was just regular tuna. Almost as if they ran out of spicy tuna half way through. Kind of frustrating considering there is a price difference. I also ordered a roll that had tempura shrimp inside. It seemed as though they made the shrimp long in advance so rather than being warm and crispy as it should it was room temp and soggy. Over all, neither of the rolls had much flavor. I've had bad sushi where it is so fishy you are afraid to eat it but that was definitely not the case here. It was fresh fish, everything just had a monotone flavor and consistency. Finally, I do think it is a bit overpriced. The prices are similar to a great place I used to go to in Chicago but the flavor is closer to grocery store sushi. I guess I'll have to keep searching for my Toledo spot! read more

As I've mentioned before, switching here from Seattle is a big challenge for me because Seattle has LOVELY FOOD! But tonight, I think my life is started getting a little easier because of you, Kyoto Ka. I ordered Chirashi and Calamari over the phone. When someone picked up the phone, I heard a beautiful voice says, " bla bla bla, how may I help you?" Took my order, asked for my name and phone number and said good bye. I went in there to pick up my food 20 mins than I was supposed to. When I stepped into the place, the Asian lady greet me with big smile, I immediately feel refreshing after a long HW afternoon. Walked to the counter, an American lady said Hi and gave me big smile. She hand me my order and asked me to sign it. When I was about to hand back the receipt, a guy came up and gave me a big smile! I used to run restaurants for years and I would like to say they are serving their clients seriously, sincerely here. You may say it's just waiters' typical attitude, but I am sure not every waiter give you real smile and they did. Got home, opened the container, found they gave me complimentary salad, HAPPY! Chirashi was good, I like how the rice comes, looks cute to me.they put some seasonings on the rice and some chopped eggs too.I The fish above the rice taste as good as Cutting Board in Seattle. Man, I'm telling you, it's Good! Calamari was Aromatic, the sauce was perfect. I guess it's the combination of mayo, thousand island plus wasabi? I don't know, but I love it!
