Good little spot in Downey. I had a very pleasant first experience at Kyoto. It was a full house and it took a bit to get our food out, but I went in expecting that because it's a small place with a good buzz and it's Friday night. The French Kiss roll was so yummy! There were lots of appealing options to choose from and I can't wait to try others. My only real gripe is that while I wasn't shocked at the prices, I've had better for less, so I wish they would offer more specials for their rolls or half priced options. (From what I saw the rolls ranged from $8-16. Average was $12-13.) Other than that, my brother and I had a great experience and will be coming back sometime soon! read more

Kyoto Sushi is a hidden gem in Downey that is frequented by the locals. It's located in a strip mall with dark tinted windows so it's not as attention grabbing or flashy like other sushi spots in Downey but the sushi is amazing!!! The quality of their fish is super fresh and the types of rolls are endless! This place is so creative in their variety. One of my favorite rolls is the cilantro roll, salmon on top with paper thin slices of lemon add a kick to the roll unlike anything I've ever tasted before. Simply put you have to try this place the prices are reasonable and the service once you get a table is fast. NOTE this place is closed on SUNDAYS :( read more

Stumbled into this place because the 5 south was a mess and I needed to eat and pee somewhere. Do not let the sketchy shopping center location fool you!! Came to dinner here with a friend, and it's a nice little spot. Service was very attentive and quick. I, myself don't really care for sushi, but my friend said it was good, we gave it a shot. Sushi was good, nothing that really wowed me though. They do have a vast variety of unique rolls. Overall, in my opinion, it's worth trying at least once. Got there at 2:14 and the same person who I had just spoken to told me they were closed, despite the large digital clock on the wall saying 2:14 and people still sitting and dinning in. When I walked into this restaurant, the first thing I noticed was that there was a weird smell. It's possible that it was a hot day, and the A/C was not strong enough. The potion of the food is big! I ordered salmon and yellow tail sashimi, and they gave me 8 big pieces each. The sashimi was very fresh! I almost could not finish my food! The chef was generous! The server was very attentive to me! Small parking lot in front, and they have a bigger lot in the back. It would be a solid 4 stars if there was no weird smell! Oh God...OH GOD!! Kyoto Sushi serves such HORRENDOUS sushi!! I tried to dispel the bad sushi region that is Downey, CA by trying this place...but it's only proven that ALL HOPE IS LOST! :( NO idea why this place has such wonderful reviews, but if you read this review: you have been warned! I came in to catch an early dinner, and took a bit of time perusing the menu. Their prices are more than the usual prices - especially their special rolls (for their price...they don't deliver). I decided on the Spicy Tuna Tempura specialty roll. For $14 (including tax), such a disgrace to sushi! When I got it, it definitely wasn't tempura! It's a very mushy spicy tuna roll, with slices of shrimp on top, and those crunchy tempura bits (but they aren't crunchy). The quality of their spicy tuna was way too mushy to be deemed fresh, almost a puree. Well, they gave eight pieces...but after six, I was debating whether to rejoice this fact. Low quality sushi, prices that aren't worth it...I'm NOT coming back! read more

How did this place get such high reviews?? It must be for their regular entrees and not the sushi or the rolls.. which is sad since this place has SUSHI in their name. I've only had the rolls here but the fish quality on the rolls is decent at best.. actually NO.. not good. The rolls are a decent portion but just isn't that great in flavor at all. All the ones I've had were pretty bland... I believe my last visit I had the Spicy Tiger Roll.. seriously MEH. Not completely amazing, but considering how hard it is to find even sushi around Downey, Kyoto is very much appreciated. The menu is pretty creative, as are all other sushi places, with different combinations of cooked/raw fish, and entertaining names. Salmon Lover: Fried asparagus, salmon, and crab meat all topped with a piece of fresh salmon, this sure satisfies salmon lovers like myself! The roll comes with slices of lemon that you can squeeze on top, but I prefer just eating it by itself. Again, it wasn't the best roll I've ever had, but it is in the city of Downey. David Roll: Spicy crab meat, shrimp, cucumber inside, topped off with tuna, salmon, and avocado on the outside, this roll is then glazed with a sweet mayo-like creamy sauce. This roll wasn't like anything I had tried elsewhere, and indeed it was enjoyable, but not very memorable. Overall, this little sushi restaurant makes a great lunch/dinner spot if you are strolling through the city and craving sushi. Kyoto Sushi is the best food I have ever tasted in my entire life. Their food rocks even their soups, and appetizers are the bombs that exploded inside my mouth with every food flavor bursting into my taste buds. It's like heaven in my mouth and the best part is, that the people who work there listen closely to every word you said. Evil, evil sea urchin!!!! On the outside the place does not look great in any way since it is in a crumby little strip mall but on the inside it looks really nice. This used to be my favorite sushi place in Downey....NO MORE!!!! I got really really sick after having their sea urchin which I had ordered quite a few times before. I know something like sea urchin might be taking a risk since it is not that popular and for that reason it might be laying around for awhile before some hapless Kyoto customer like me dares eat it, but still this should not ever happen. I could not eat sushi anywhere else for months (just the thought of it repulsed me) thanks to Kyoto's evil, evil sea urchin....ugh!!!! In Downey I recommend Ichiban or Tokyo Garden. read more

Decent sized combos for cheap -- $8. You definitely shouldn't come here for fresh fish... but if you're in the mood for some teriyaki chicken, beef etc OR cooked rolls...then this place does the job. I went here and I admit I didnt expect much because of the location and area. I was used to the place across the street Maki Yaki which I love. I walked in and the prices were a llitle higher than Yaki. We sat down and ordered. DELICIOUS!!! My wifey had the Creamy Crunch Roll..... possibly the most delicious roll I have ever had. Whenever I go to sushi restaurant I almost always order the chirashi, which is a bowl of sushi rice topped with various fish shashimi. I would rate their fish her pretty good as it's fresh and their chirashi is one of the top 5 I've had. It wasn't on the menu so I'm glad I asked the waitress. I haven't eaten anything else here although it seems to have a few regulars and one time I went there were some Japanese business men also having the chirashi so I felt somewhat special. I work about 2 miles from Kyoto and man am I glad I was able to find this hole in the wall. Parking is never difficult although the lot isn't too big. I've only been here during lunch and they are almost always packed. Don't let the exterior fool you as most Sushi restaurants that are good are usually hole in the walls. There really isn't a reason why you would go here but I found this to be the best sushi place in the neighborhood. read more

When I asked my daughter what she wanted for dinner, she happily said, "Sushi!" Yum. That sounded good, let's do it. Then I remembered, we're in Downey. Where the heck is a good sushi place in Downey? So, I clicked on my trusty Yelp app on my phone and found Kyoto Sushi. Boy, am I a fan now! I've passed by this place for years and have never tried it, only because you can easily miss it. It's in a strip mall with a (I think) a donut shop and a liquor store and a dentist? However, it's on one of the busiest intersections of Florence and Paramount. It wasn't packed when we arrived around 9:00 pm. They were closing in about an hour, so we still had time. We started out with drinks and ordered the edamame and sushi. While waiting for our food and drinks to come they had on the Laker game. There are 2 TV's in the restaurant to keep you occupied. I had the mackerel and mussel sushi. YUM. My daughter ordered the chicken cutlet and even though I gave up fried food for Lent, I had a taste and it was gooood! They give you a big plate of it, served with rice and salad. So, I HAD to try the Baked Dynamite. It's the last entree listed on the menu on the back. Here's what it had on it: Rice, Mushroom, Onion, Shrimp, Scallop, topped with dried fish flakes, green onion and smelt egg. All that together = GOODNESS. Ahhhhh... I don't remember how much the dish cost, but it didn't matter because it was gooooood! It's not prepared like your usual rolled up sushi, it's servce on a metal heated plate on a bed a rice. It was soo filling, that I coudn't finish it but it tasted just as good the next morning for breakfast. The service was good. They were really nice and I didn't have flag anyone down (which is awesome, in my book). Prices were reasonable, not too expensive. Our bill, including drinks and tip, probably came out to $30. Not bad for a late night sushi run... in Downey! I recommend this place and plan to come back soon. read more

I used to live in Downey, and the BF and I miss this place a lot. It was our staple sushi place, if only for the Frank roll and the Salmon crunch. Great rolls! We have yet to find rolls like those, and occasionally have cravings The waitress is super nice too. We can only go there if we happen to pass by, but she still remembers us. Great customer service!
