I absolutely LOVE this place! Unfortunately I don't live in Downey anymore and I often get cravings for Kyoto and have to drive down. First off, yes this place looks like a whole in the wall from outside, but inside it's fairly decent. Yes, this place can get busy on the weekends, so if you happen to go at peek times you will have to wait. However, the wait is so worth it! The quality is excellent and the presentation is magnificent! I've taken many friends here and they end up loving this place too. Sara (the waitress is really nice) she even has two rolls named after her ~ and they are yummy! At first glance over the menu, yes the prices look steep. I was apprehensive until I saw Kim bring out the slices of tuna for our nigiri. The portions werrrrrrre huge. He was cutting salmon in front of us, and even though I was already super full, we HAD to order a salmon skin roll. It was the best salmon skin I had ever had. ICING ON THE CAKE: I was recovering from a cold and had to step outside for a particularly bad coughing fit. At the end of our meal, Kim gave me some Ricola! Dirty, poor quality of fish. The walls were greasy with who knows what. Horrible fish quality. Rice was weird albacore worse had a chemically weird taste! Also they are way way over priced , I'd pay buffet prices for that quality. The service is sub par they are busy and didn't really check on us after we got our food. And ergo ok a leap and ordered a good about for crap sushi. Our fault but we heard it was great but should have paid attention to Yelp more closely. The place across from portos is way better. Best sushi place around is Noshi Sushi worth the drive. Never again will we go to Kyoto. Lesson learned $100 down the drain. read more

Really 3.5 stars. "A" health department sign on door. Pleasant, quick ,Friendly. Nice prices. Udon soup bowl with extremely tasty shrimp, hint of smoky seaweed. Tempura delicately battered, not greasy! Again, very tasty shrimp. Teriyaki chicken a bit disappointing...overly sweet gummy sauce on seemingly unmarinated chicken. I've been here a couple of times and I think it is a pretty decent sushi joint. I've had rolls, nigiri and sashimi here. I wasn't terribly impressed with the quality of the fish, so I didn't enjoy the sashi that much. The Nigiri was also so-so. This place is good a making rolls though. You can expect to find all sorts of exotic rolls with sauces and textures, too many to count. And on a weekend night, there is often a line out the door, so be prepared to wait a little bit if you come at peak time. read more

Kyoto has an extensive unique roll menu. The Aztec is a popular and colorful roll but I ordered the Salmon lover roll for obvious reasons. By the way it's delicious. The restaurant is a hidden gem and very busy. The staff is friendly and attentive. You can't go wrong! read more

Very delicious. We stumbled onto this place thinking I'd heard of it before and actually thinking it a different sushi joint. Lucky us. Especially because it's so close. We had sake, Unagi, masago sushi and two rolls, Sara's roll #2 and Azteca roll. So pros and cons: Sake sushi was a little thin and lacked the butteryness of higher quality salmon but good. Masago was really good and stacked high. Unagi delicious and a good size. Aztec roll is really good. The lemon needs to be half the size or just the peel. It become a bit overwhelming a full slice of a quarter. Sara's roll #2 is hands down one of the best creations I've had. Just a plethora of flavor cashing into one another on the palette. Just a real delight. As for decor: It's nothing fancy but then I don't care. Service: Nice, amicable behind the bar and on the floor. I do recommend and bound to see me there at least a few times a month. Oh and the beer was good. HITE! read more

Nice little hole-in-the-wall sushi joint. Very small place with limited seating, so be prepared for a wait, especially if you're coming around dinnertime. The quality of the fish is pretty decent, and they have a good selection of rolls. Even their combo plates are good and come with nice-sized portions. Typical beer selection for a sushi joint, which if they have the large Sapporo bottle, I'm happy :) This is a good sushi place to go to if you're in the area and don't want to drive far. We wanted to try different sushi place. We found this one on yelp of course and decided to give it a try. It's a small place and it was a Friday night so there were quite a bit of people waiting outside. We waited about 20-30 minutes and were seated at the bar. If it wasn't just me and my wife, I'm sure we would have waited longer. We order 3 rolls and 2 orders of sushi. Every roll we order was really good. The creamy crunchy roll was my wife's favorite! If you like cream cheese in your rolls then this is one for you. We also ordered a roll with mango, avocado and lemon that was really good and refreshing. The service was a bit slow. But the great sushi made up for it. Oh, and did I the mention that they are Dodger fans? Yup! Let's go dodgers! This is our new favorite sushi spot in the area. My favorite Sushi joint in Downey!!! I will, however, say... it's very very hard to reach them during Covid to put in order in. Really wish we could order on here or on another app and schedule a time for pickup. That part is very frustrating. However, their food and customer service is always on point! My family are weekly regulars to Kyoto & consider it one of the better sushi spots in the Downey area. The owners Tim & Sarah are delightful humans and very hospitable! However, recently I've been SUPER disappointed with the service and attitude of the new staff. They created a new seating system that makes for an awful experience. Previously, if you arrived and there was open tables or seats at the sushi bar you would be seated immediately, like a normal food establishment. Now, when you arrive if there are open seats you are asked to sign in and wait outside until you are called inside. This has happened to my family on two occasions now when there are many empty tables available and we wait more than 20-30 minutes to be seated. Most recently, it was raining & half of the restaurant was EMPTY and they had 3 families outside waiting in the cold rain. When I entered and asked for a wait time I was rudely told by the only female server that works here that they would seat me when they could. Then, I asked if I could sit at the sushi bar since half of it was empty and was told no. A normal person would have left at this point but I wanted to give a place I've been coming to for years the benefit of the doubt so I waited 20 more minutes and only one group was seated in that time period. Finally, I expressed my frustration to the hostess about the new seating policy & was yelled at in front of the entire restaurant to "BE PATIENT! ITS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE!". All in all, I'm extremely bummed that a place I've been coming to for years has transformed overnight & has given me the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Hoping this message gets back to Sarah & Tim so a change can be made before they lose more loyal customers. read more
