Kyu is a super aesthetic restaurant that would make for a great date night around NYC. I ended up coming to this restaurant after having dinner at another restaurant and going for an evening walk with my girlfriend. While I was walking, I was able to see the bar area through the glass and thought to myself that this would be a cute place to get drinks at. I walked inside and only wanted drinks, so we were offered either bar seating or at the lounge area near the bar, so we opted for the lounge seating high top. The bar area was cute with tall ceilings (I did not walk passed the bar area to see the rest of the restaurant). Since we still had some room from dinner about an hour ago, we decided to order a dessert to share. We ordered the Almond Fudge Sundae, although I think that the next time I come to this restaurant, I would like to check out the Strawberry Vacherin. The Almond Fudge Sundae was basically three scoops of vanilla ice cream, covered in an almond coating, alongside fudge-filled cones, caramel balls (with caramel liquid inside), and tiny chocolate cake pieces. The desert overall was simple, yet complex, because of the nutty exterior, caramel sauce, and smoothness of the ice cream. I liked the dessert, however, I would enjoy the dessert more if it had just a tad less almond covering. It felt as if most of the bites had too many almond pieces and that overwhelmed the dessert at times. For drinks, we ordered the Panda Forest and the Sweet and Sour. The Panda Forest was a combination of dark rum, herbs, and coconut cream. Despite the ingredients, the flavor was not herbaceous. The drink was basically like a coconut cream with a strong rum flavor. If you love coconut and strong pours, this drink is for you. The Sweet and Sour had an aesthetically pleasing look to it, due to sliced strawberry that was frozen within the large ice cube. The drink was not bad, however, the spiciness of the pepper-infused alcohol left a bit of a burn at the back of the throat after taking a few sips. It was not bad, but I would have to say that the Panda Forest was the better drink between the two. Overall, the dessert and drinks were pretty good. I will most likely return for a special occasion. The restaurant is definitely more on the expensive side. I also heard that they have locations in Miami and in Mexico City. I might even check those locations out, as well. read more

The spicy tuna crispy rice is somewhat dry - skip that. Order the lamb saddle (chef's specialty) and the coconut cake to round off the meal. Ultimately, this restaurant is OVERPRICED. This swanky, Miami-transplant has found a new home in New York City. @kyunyc is the third installment from founders Alan Omsky and Jordan Sayfie, who opened their first location in the Wynwood district in Miami back in 2016. Led by Per Se and Eleven Madison Park alum, Chris Arellanes, this NoHo eatery lives up to its first location's reputation, continuing to churn out pretty phenomenal signature dishes that pay homage to Japanese yakiniku wood-fired grilling methods. This was great, albeit very, very expensive. First visit, we got the tuna on crispy rice, the cauliflower, the Japanese sweet potato, the stone pot fried rice with duck, the lamb saddle, and the s'mores cake. There wasn't anything we didn't like, but our single favorite dish was the lamb saddle, and I'm not sure there's anything that would be a must for next time -- as great as the lamb saddle was, there are other items on the smoked menu that looked great as well. On the downside, everything was very expensive and extremely heavy -- we were told that three dishes per person would be a good amount of food, but we probably could have stopped before the lamb saddle and dessert and been full. read more

Came here on a whim and I would say it was a hit or miss with the dishes, but overall a good experience. We started with Godzilla Water and Lychee juice, which they didn't have on the menu, but happily provided for me upon request. We started with Tuna Crispy Rice which was really tasty with diverse flavors. Although, I did enjoy the Grilled Octopus a lot more, it was probably one of my favorite dishes. Entrée consisted of Udon Noodles, Fried Chicken, and Sweet potatoe side. Without question get the sweet potatoes, it was the best thing on the menu!! So this restaurant is actually new but has a sister location in Miami that is very famous. It's very beautiful inside and the vibes are great off a later dinner. The service was good and everyone was very polite. The food was good but definitely overpriced. We started with the tuna tataki, Wagyu toast, Korean fried chicken, and grilled octopus. The tuna tataki melted in your mouth and the sauce it came with was delicious but the majority of the plate was filled with roasted peppers which was kind of a catfish. The Wagyu toast was fantastic but with a price tag like that it has to be. Although it was delicious, sometimes the buttered toast overpowered the other flavors of the Wagyu and truffle. The Korean fried chicken was cooked very well but the star of the dish was the sauce that it was on and I definitely need to find another place that'll make sauce like this. The grilled octopus was not good. Not even close to the best grilled octopus I've had but I did enjoy the heart of palms ceviche it came with so that's something. For our entree we shared the short rib as it came highly recommended. It was a fun dish since you could make your lettuce wraps and there were a few sauces alongside and it literally fell off the bone. However, it was EXTREMELY salty. I got the first piece on the end which had the dry rub on it and it took me 5 minutes to recover from all the salt. After that, I made sure to scrape off some of the seasoning so I was a little disappointed with that. Finally, we got the milk bread for dessert which I loved. Granted, it was an overpriced piece of brioche with grilled pineapple but still very very tasty. Overall, lots of good food. A few things could be better. All the things could be cheaper. read more

Miami vibes in NYC. This spot definitely has a different vibe and ambience . Love the interiors and the open kitchen look. It was two of us and the portion size was decent so we were quite full: We ordered with the shishito peppers, Korean fried chicken and the stone pot thai fried rice. Everything tasted delicious and was served hot. Highly recommend the stone pot fried rice. For dessert - we got the soaked milk bread which was average. The bread was not soaked or moist as expected. 10/10 for the pink puppy cocktail which was vodka, lychee juice and yuzu. Very light and easy to drink. Ended up getting 3 of those. Very expensive dinner but enjoyed some of the entrees a lot. Favorites of the night was the crispy flavorful fried rice, tender ribs and delicious potstickers. I would skip the bone marrow (too meaty and did not enjoy the texture that much) and order only 1 of the fried chicken ( very large chicken pieces, felt heavy). The dessert pineapple bread was light and airy. Cocktails were great all around. This place is not perfect but I still love it a lot. I've been here 3 times, once for dinner and twice for brunch. I prefer brunch, I just think it's an overall stronger menu and lower key vibe. But their heavy hitter dishes are available on both menus. Their drinks are good across the board and strong enough to get the job done. Roasted cauliflower: obsessed. Tastes so fresh, yet spicy, yet creamy and rich and cheesy. It's served in a cilantro sauce and with a creamy goat cheese sauce. Kale chips: I don't even like kale but these were addicting. Pork buns: solid, really good. Stone pot fried rice: would skip, not special especially for the price. Braised short rib: amazing! Highly recommend. Tuna crispy rice: my favorite thing on their menu. I understand why people say this isn't their favorite crispy rice in NYC but Nobu's crispy rice is too chewy. I said it! KYU's crispy rice is chewy but doesn't hurt my jaw. And the texture and freshness of the tuna, it goes without saying, is great. Build your own sundae (brunch): skip! Simply bad. Steak and eggs (brunch): solid but not at all a must Fried chicken: the first time I had this it was just okay. The chicken wasn't as tender as I'd have liked. But the other two times it was spectacular. The spicy sauce it comes with really elevates it. Everything scones with miso butter (brunch): an absolute must!! SO good. Buttery, warm scones with everything seasoning (savory). Served with a dish that's half butter and half a sweet, thick miso syrup (reminds me of a thick maple syrup sort of). Really delicious. Cinnamon roll (brunch): super super sweet. However it is also a must. The chai frosting is really good and special. The service is decent enough. Everyone is nice and the food comes out pretty fast. It's otherwise slow. As in, you can wait for your server to bring you the check for like 15-20 minutes. Overall, KYU is expensive, but it's special enough to where it's worth trying for an occasion. My girlfriend and I used to come to Kyu a ton when going out for date night. She has food allergies, so there's limited options in terms of restaurants that taste good that we can have. Unfortunately, the chef decided to take away options such as corn crispy rice and fried rice were previously safe for her to eat. When asked if they could accommodate us, we were told that the chef would not accommodate us as not to "sacrifice flavor." Unfortunately we will be taking our business elsewhere until the chef decides to check his ego. Which is upsetting considering this was one of our favorite restaurants. You can have your "extra flavor", but you will continue to lose your customers, too. read more

Apparently their Miami restaurant is very popular...I have no doubt it's popular for the right reasons but NYC is at another level when it comes to gastronomy. KYU is more comparable to TAO or Buddha Bar - decent food but inflated pricing. If ambience is what you want & you don't mind the average food then yes KYU is up there with the other two. We celebrated our wedding anniversary earlier this week; the restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night. It's nice to see that our beloved city is back to its old self. Now food & drinks- we ordered the Pink Puppy & Sensei cocktails, both of which were good! Not knowing what to expect, we opted for ala carte menu: Roasted Cauliflower- we were told it's their signature dish; it didn't disappoint but some people may find the $32 price tag a bit much for cauliflower. Tuna Crispy Rice- I was most excited to try it, based on the description on their menu. However neither hubby nor I liked it much. It was too bland..tasteless really. Stone Pot Thai Fried Rice (King Crab) - it was our favorite entree of the night. Recommend it! Baby Back Ribs- I get it, BBR is supposed to be sweet but, at the end of the day, they shouldn't taste like dessert. The meat however was 'melt in your mouth' tender. Dessert -Soaked Milk bread was recommended by our server. Presentation & taste wise it was very average. In my head I though it might be something like SPOT Dessert bar's Golden Toast (our all time favorite)..it doesn't even come close to it. Overall, do check it out for a date night or a special occasion. On Seven Rooms app, when you make a reservation they typically ask if it's a special occasion. We did mark it as our anniversary celebration but there was no mention or even a basic 'congratulations' from anyone at the restaurant..no big deal but, in case you're expecting any special touch for your celebration, you're in for disappointment. When I first heard Kyu was coming to New York I got excited, then worried. The sequel is rarely as good as the original, you know? Well, I was right to fret. Kyu NYC is *not* as good as the one in Miami. The vibe os close, but feels a little try-hard. Those Florida sunshine smiles don't come as naturally to the staff up here. The food is also close but not quite as en pointe as the OG. TYE roasted cauliflower came out way over-spiced. The Miami version has significantly less heat. The duck "burnt ends" had no char whatsoever. I'm still not sure what was burnt. The sauce was good but we didn't need a gallon of it poured onto a flat plate. Drinks are lovely, food is slow to arrive. The dining room is crowded AF. I mean, like a subway car. They should remove five tables. For real. Maybe seven. The bar seating area may have been designed by artificial intelligence, because it is the most cold, uninviting little area imaginable. Seats are too far from couches, high tops are indeed right on top of other seating spots, and the lighting looks like giant brown buttholes. I'm not kidding. You should also know the cost of Kyu is high. This menu is not a good value and should be considered for expense accounts only. You'll spend money better at two dozen downtown restaurants. When I visit Manhattan to hangout with my team and explore my old stomping grounds I spend a chunk of time organizing our events. Feasts and bar crawls to 5am are all on the table. One of my coworkers, and friend from Texas, told another colleague to not let him hang out with me after the events this trip. His reasoning, when an idea person and a yes person get together, the night is one endless epic adventure. He wasn't wrong considering our adventures during our last all-hands. I hit the hotel at 5am, second one to land back at the office at 7:30am. The co-founder laughs with me later that morning, "I heard about you all last night." I quickly glanced at my imaginary watch laughing and said, "I am here bright and early." I had just started my second 3-shot latte. After how busy Q2/Q3 were I figured I would pass on the crawls and get us into the legendary KYU this time. This my second time visiting KYU NYC. This time I had a much better experience than the last. Overall the service was excellent. The servers were very attentive and gave great recommendations. This time I tried the Ribs, Roasted Cauliflower, Sliced Hamachi and Tuna with Crispy Rice. I knew the Tuna with Crispy Rice was going to be amazing, however I was surprised by the Roasted Cauliflower. It was absolutely amazing!! The goat cheese filling along with the shishito vinaigrette was a heavenly combination. The hamachi was so fresh and light, simply delicious. The baby back ribs were very tender and flavorful, however they were a bit salty. Both my date and I agreed that the sauce they were smothered in was a bit too salty. Over all the meal was delicious. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to try out their desserts, which means we have to come back and give them a try. Our reservation was for 2:45 and they said the kitchen closes at 3pm until dinner. I don't understand why would they allow reservations at this time if they are closing the kitchen. One of the best meal I've had in NYC. The restaurant is dimly lit and great for a date night or dinner with friends. The service was very good, we ordered the crispy tuna as an appetizer and I went to the bathroom after ordering. By the time I came back, the crispy tuna was already on the table. The short rib stole the show-- literally to die for. It fell right off the bone and was served with several unique and delicious sauces. The fried rice was a great accomplice. I could've lived without the sweet potato but I was also full by the time I tried it, so take that with a grain of salt. Already thinking about coming back to Kyu. read more

I was pretty disappointed with my experience. Hint: No Asians dining at an Asian-inspired location. After seeing all the positive reviews, I was excited to try the place out. The menu looked fun and I was eager to see if it lived up to the appealing images. However, it fell short. Eat with your eyes, not with your mouth. While I'll take some fault for not looking closer at the detail Asian "inspired," I still didn't think that'd affect quality much. I walked out questioning my time and money spent. What I ordered: - The sweet potato. The Parmesan added an unpleasant bitterness. I think better flavor combinations could have been found, even for the other items on the menu. - The short ribs were okay, but nothing special. The addition of wasabi on the side felt out of place. Does this make it seem Japanese? - The rest of the vegetable dishes were passable, but some of the toppings and seasonings didn't complement each other well as if someone dumped it all on. The crunchy kale was good, just unsure if this is supposed to be Asian-inspired. - The Thai fried rice wasn't bad--I enjoyed it-- cilantro doesn't make it Thai though. - The lychee drinks didn't taste like lychee. What even is lychee anymore? - Coconut cake was great, I'd come back only for this. The only thing I'd recommend is the crunchy rice tuna bites and the dessert; maybe stick to that here. Amazing 10/10 would recommend! The Korean fried chicken and duck scramble were so delicious and tasty that we were stuffed afterwards. But the soufflé was so light, and with that matcha butter, we made sure to save room to try that too! We did a pitcher of guava mimosas that went perfectly with the food. Good food and good service. The appetizers were delicious but the mains were just ok in my opinion. Would recommend the tuna crispy rice, crispy kale, and the Wagyu toast. Those were the highlights. I would say the highs were quite high but the ones that weren't highs were very average for the price. The stone pot rice didn't have enough crispy sides to it. The Korean fried chicken pieces were a bit on the large side since it was the thigh meat and the drumstick. I think had they been the party wings, that might have tasted better. They had an interesting sauce that kind of tasted like cheese but the chicken needed to be dipped in it. I was really looking forward to the short rib but the taste was a bit to smoky for me. My favorite Miami restaurant has come to NYC. Since my husband and I found out, we've been here twice (and brought friends the second time around). I passed the neon sign walking from Barry's in NoHo. What a crowd pleaser. Satisfaction rating... ! My criteria is pretty simple for these ratings, but that doesn't mean I'm easy to please. What do I look for? 1. Food - just what I was craving. We tried the short rib, crispy rice with yellow tail, octopus, crab fried rice and a couple cocktails each. All delish. 2. Service - great servers and hosts. They're so nice and complementary! I would have tipped anyway... but genuine compliments are always welcome. 3. Ambience - trendy and clean, wish there were more bathrooms... the line was long on a Friday night. 4. Tables/ Chairs - pretty comfortable. For food, we got the Korean fried chicken, tuna crispy rice, and breakfast burger, all of which were delicious, but our favorite dish by far was the cinnamon roll! This used to be one of my favorite restaurants and now I do not know if I will ever go back. Over the past year the quality has dropped on all fronts, ambience, service and food. Our tomahawk steak was cold and had to be sent back. They ruined the wagyu steak tartare with too much mayonnaise. Half the cocktails we ordered were not balanced. My drink was empty for almost an hour. We had to ask for our plates to be changed and when they were they didn't provide clean plates to every one. We had to ask for cutlery when our steak arrived and then they didn't bring enough for us so we had to wait longer. We constantly had to try to get attention to order. The bathroom line was so long it was spilling into the restaurant around tables. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, the nyc location has been open for two years. Great happy hour spot! I imagine it gets a bit pricey when it's not happy hour. I would recommend making a reservation, we walked in right around 5 and luckily there were 3 bar seats available for our group, but they filled up quickly! Everything we ordered felt forced. Crispy rice was definitely different but there's a good reason why it's not a popular way to make sushi. The caviar sandwich was just messy and should have been toast or on one side instead. The King Crab fried rice was overdone just for the showboating at the table. The inside was good but rice was overdone on the sides. The server had some trouble scraping off the sides initially. - $200+ "wagyu" tastes like it's fresh out of a furnace with how overly-smoked it was. Easily the worst steak I've ever had that was marketed as "wagyu" and the worst steak I've ever had that was more than $35. Didn't even finish the "32oz medium rare"portion which was probably closer to 16 oz medium well - condescending waitstaff, especially the bus girl that brought us the wrong drink, slammed it on our table and snapped at us when we simply tried to explain that to her. We let our waiter know and got a sarcastic apology and fake offer to call a manager. Unsurprising response given he was constantly trying to upsell everything all night (no I don't think a table of 6 needs three orders of your "wagyu" toast) on top of the other $800 of food we had already ordered - the duck fried rice was good so I'll give them two stars instead of one read more

Kyu leaves a great impression with their delicious foods and cocktails. The ambiance is definitely NYC chic. I really enjoyed their Crispy Tuna Rice, different from many I have tried. The dishes come out as they are ready so do not expect for all orders to come out at the same time. The short rib and duck was phenomenal. read more
