Ambiance - casual, intimate, great for celebrations Service - exceptional, everything was timed really well and didn't feel rushed Food - fish quality & presentation was 10/10

I went for my anniversary and really enjoyed my time here! To start off: I ordered sake and I definitely really enjoyed the hakkaisan yukimuro 3 year aged as it's super fresh and full bodied. The yuzu one actually just taste like juice so if you don't like alcohol, that one is a good one and if you do like sake I would recommend the other one. Most of the sushi was fresh and tasty and comparable to other great omakase spots. Some notable pieces were their isaki piece for its unique flavor and texture and their truffle miso black cod which warmed my soul up immediately being warm on top of a bed of rice with yummy truffle on top. Their uni is good but I've had better. It was even better on an add on I recommend... I got the oyster caviar uni and it was definitely top tier! They offered me some free house sake closer to the end of the course and we ended up trying their birthcake! They gave us 1 for our anniversary which was such a surprise! Another party had an actual birthday and they played some music and turned on the strobe lights for him so much fun. The place is romantic and dark so you don't need to worry about looking your best. One of the more trendy omakase style decor vs that light cedar look.

Such a wonderful Omakase!! There are so many in the city now, that they really have to have all the things to compete. 1. Fresh, innovative fish with garnishes 2. Friendly service/chef 3. Comfortable or beautiful atmosphere/ambiance My husband and I are omakase addicts! We had some friends in town from a small town and they had never been to an omakase before this one. I was SO happy when they told me we ruined sushi for them back in their home town. Because they won't be able to get this level of omakase without coming back to visit or flying to Japan! We were all super satisfied by this meal!

Every piece was flavorful and fresh and service was wonderful by the chefs. Complimentary sake at the end was a nice touch. Ambiance was great, but slightly put off by the sales technique with the iPad photos of extra pieces at the end. Other than that, it was perfect!

Fresh, affordable omakase with great variety. Chef was super kind and generous -- even gave us free sake and a sushi "birthday cake"! Highly recommend if you want quality without spending $$$.

My first time going to an Omakase style restaurant. I was a bit skeptical that I would enjoy all the different fishes as I usually only order tuna and salmon. After this experience, I'm not sure I can go back to non-omakase style sushi anymore... it was so good! I can't even name the fishes I had, but they were ALL fresh tasting and yummy! Thank you Zen Sushi! Will be coming back soon!

One of the best affordable omakase in NYC Fish is incredibly fresh, the service is warm and attentive, and the cozy vibe makes the whole experience feel extra special. If you're in the LES and craving omakase, Zen Sushi Omakase is 100% worth a visit. Definitely coming back.

This is the waagu beef dish. Very small bit size ... although very small, it was tasty and delicious

Best sushi experience ... the food tasted amazing and the fish was very fresh. However I was not satiated or full as the pieces were bite size small. Additionally the first two courses were sashimi consisting of 2 thinly slices of fish. If the omakase was 17 courses, I believe it would make the meal far more superior.

The fish here is exceptional. You can tell the chefs come from strong pedigree. The scallops were probably my favorite, but everything was well-prepared. They give you enough time, the sake selection is excellent, the price is fair, and the rice is exceptional. Nothing stood out as bad. I got the eel and foie gras add-on, and that was incredible too. You've gotta go.

Made reservation for 5p for two on a Saturday and the place was pretty empty. There were only a handful of us at the counter. It was 89$ for 14 pieces and was very mediocre at best. A few pieces were a little on the fishy side, and overall, the portions were quite small -- we both left still feeling hungry. We were on the 11th piece 30-ish mins into the meal and that's also when they asked if we wanted to add additional pieces. Overall, service was great and staff were all super nice but food fell short for us. I think there are better places in the same price point.

The is some of the best sushi I have ever eaten in my life . The food is fresh, expertly prepared, and tastes like no other. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and engaging. Run, do not walk!! You will hit be disappointed. Say hi to Jason.

The fish here was spectacular! This place did a good job with seasonings and sauces on each dish--they complemented the fish well but did not overpower. There was not one dish we didn't like! The only thing that was rather disappointing was the ambiance. We read about people's fun omakase experiences where they got to chat with the staff, learn about the sushi, and engage with everyone else around them, but our sushi chef did not talk with us very much and only half the bar was filled when we went. It was pretty quiet inside and we could barely hear him when he was telling us what dish he was serving us. I would go again for the meal but would probably try someplace else for another experience.

This restaurant exceeded our expectations. Every bite was an experience and Jeff did amazing at explaining each sushi

The atmosphere here was a bit more lively and crowded compared to the more relaxed vibe of the UWS spot. I enjoyed my meal even more this time around. I started with the beet salad, which was delicious and offered great value given the generous portion size. it featured sliced beets, arugula, goat cheese, and walnuts. I also had my eye on the hijiki soybean salad--which is a bit smaller and reportedly homemade--so I may try that next time, along with the warm mushroom salad which looked very tasty. The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. The entrees provide a substantial amount of food, and I especially appreciate that they allow you to choose which roll comes with your meal.

Honestly, I'm surprised this restaurant has a four-star rating. While the service was excellent,…read morethe food was consistently disappointing. We started with a lychee martini that tasted overwhelmingly of vodka, with barely any lychee flavor. Of the appetizers--the seaweed salad, cucumber salad, and edamame dumplings--the cucumber salad was the best. The seaweed salad tasted like a standard prepackaged version, while the dumplings had an unusual, unpleasant flavor and tasted as though they had come straight from the freezer. For our main dishes, we ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box and udon with tempura. The udon was acceptable, but the tempura was excessively oily, lacking the light, crisp texture you would expect. Even the chicken teriyaki was underwhelming; it tasted more like a reheated, prepared meal than something freshly cooked. The sushi was another letdown, with an odd flavor and appearance. The dynamite roll was especially disappointing, with an unpleasant texture and very little flavor beyond a touch of heat. The staff deserves credit for their attentive, friendly service, but unfortunately, that couldn't make up for the quality of the meal. We left feeling genuinely disappointed.

Every single fish is very high quality I find many places like the skimp out on the less popular fish but not Sanyuu West. I think the omakase is also at a very good price for the quality and amount you get though I know it is more expensive than maybe the average omakase spot right now. I also find that other spots usually underdeliver. I wish I could save more detail but honestly I have nothing more to say other than the fact that Sanyuu Weat amazing. The restaurant itself is also more spacious than I expected. Besides the main bar there are two sitting areas near the window as well as seats lined up to the bathroom to make yourself comfortable two things that I think are a rare find now in many places. A lot of thought is put into this restaurant layout and I think you can tell. The service was also great I found myself never lacking in water or waiting too long for my next piece. In fact, I had started to apologize about drinking so much water because I felt like the hostess was constantly at my side refilling my cup and she just turned to me and said, "don't apologize. Drinking water is very important." So true!!!! I'm very picky abt my recommendations to friends, I'll review any place I go to and give my thoughts but a real recommendation? Now, having said that although the food was decent, there were a couple of questionable choices in the overall presentation and plating and the sauces that accompany the black cod bento box I ordered, which did not actually come in a box. Everything is brought out piecemeal so you don't get an actual meal before you, but a lot of little plates brought out at different times, kinda like the Japanese equivalent of Tapas. We have been to this location twice, hoping the first time was a fluke, and trying to give them a chance only for the second time to be worse. The waitstaff is entirely disengaged from the customers. They rush you through the order process and don't explain any of the menu offerings, such as what is the difference between the different platter options. When they do come over, you are greeted with the sweetness and warmth of an unemotionally flat "What do you want?" After you get your food, no one comes over to refill water and cups are initially filled halfway with too much ice. No one comes over to remove plates afterward, and they definitely show no interest in finding out if you are enjoying your meal in the least. The booth we were sat at had not been cleaned after the last party's use so there was sauce all over, and it got on the back of my pants, which I later discovered while walking home...the joy. After eating comes the best part, they come over with these tablets outlining your check on the screen. Meanwhile, the tablets are strapped to their bodies the entire time. They don't allow you to scrutinize the charges in peace, no, they stand there impatiently for the duration either swerving from side to side of tapping their foot signaling discomfort that you're taking way too long. The funny part is the straps have clips to remove the tablets so it's not like it's impossible to leave the tablet and come back shortly. The whole process feels very rushed and pressurized for you to tip with one of the predetermined button selections, which start at 25%. Ummm, service sucked so no, we're definitely NOT starting there. I guess now we're both disappointed. Eventually, you get no paper receipt for your records even if you ask for it to be printed. And the whole time, the waitstaff is with you judging you on your tipping and not even being graceful enough to restrain their reaction. So no, not going back, and definitely would not recommend as a place to have a good time. Now, if you're looking for an uncomfortable experience served by someone that completely ignores you during your entire time there and expects an exorbitant tip to boot, then yes, this is the place for you!

Do of course I use Yelp to find something that catches my eye close by where we need to be. I found umami Sushi. We usually can't go wrong with Japanese food or sushi. We had no problems finding the place. The description said it was a small restaurant and as we entered the dining area was very small. Our hotel room was probably bigger. That doesn't bother me especially if we get there, there tables for us to sit comfortably. I also trust my judgment when I find a place that seems to be popular by the locals. The restaurant was empty when we arrived. We were the only ones there, but for some reason we bring good vibes to the places we eat because not too long after we placed our order, people started coming in, to the point that the small dining room was packed. I love Omakase style Service and what we ordered was a sashimi/sushi platter for three and two special rolls. I thought I got to choose the rolls but even that was chefs choice. I was just a bit worried that they would give us the cheap rolls like spicy tuna or California roll. The platter came out and it was beautifully prepared with a piece of sashimi for each of us and the rolls the chefs chose, ended up being two of my favorite rolls. The types of fish they selected were also great quality fish. We were lucky to have placed our order before the crowd came in our we might have had to wait a while because how they prepared it would have taken some time. The service was just right. Because they got busy right away, the waitress was forced to attend to everyone and couldn't really socialize with us. In fact when we finished our platter we were debating what we wanted for dessert but the waitress didn't even ask us and instead she just brought us the bill, so we said to ourselves, "I guess we're not having dessert here." So we paid the bill and gave an opportunity for someone else to take our table.
