Got a haircut with Nika, and was very happy with the results! I had pretty long hair and was prepared to cut off 10 inches or more, but had no idea what cut would look best. Nika immediately had a clear, intuitive sense of what would look good with my hair type and face shape, and gave a detailed description of what she was preparing to do before starting. She was very careful not to cut my hair too short so I wouldn't regret it later - much appreciated! I love how my hair turned out! The entire staff was extremely friendly and polite. Overall, extremely pleased with the experience, and I will be coming back for sure. Nika also recommended trying the "hair botox" treatment (somewhat of a misleading name, it's just a deep conditioning treatment, non-chemical) and I came back a few weeks later on a whim to try it out. My thick, once-frizzy hair has become silky smooth and more manageable/low-maintenance than it's ever been! The staff are close like a family there, which is a nice change and creates a functional, comfortable work environment, which made it comfortable for me to be there as a client. Review I scoured different sites for hair salons in the city; this salon constantly came up with positive reviews. And, I am here to add yet another to their long list of adoring followers. (I also don't write many reviews, but I was so pleased with their work that I knew I had to.) Both women working there worked together to find the perfect color combination to fix my blonde hair; they spent hours meticulously brushing on highlights and using toner to get the perfect combination. They consulted me throughout the process but were also experienced enough to guide me through the decisions. They took no shortcuts-working extremely hard and giving me the exact look I hoped for-bayalage. Additionally, they trimmed my hair, noticing that the stylist before (from another salon) had cut it unevenly; the trim alone did wonders-and the haircut immediately made my hair lay better. A very nice and reasonably priced hair salon in mid-town. I was in town for a business trip, and didn't want to spend over $100 on a monthly hair color tough-up. L'envie was able to take me the same day (mid-afternoon during the week). I had a color treatment with Khadi, and she was very detailed oriented and efficient, and also lovely company. It's not a super luxurious upscale salon, but nice and clean and efficient, and with a great location and staff, and fit what I was looking for perfectly. read more

From the name of the salon you wouldn't imagine there is also a nail salon cramped in there. I desperately needed a haircut and they were happy to accommodate. The space is clean, well lit and air conditioned. It was my mistake I didn't being a photo as an example because I take for granted that not everyone knows how to work with curls. The stylist was lovely but I felt she was a bit pushy insisting on reducing the length in the front. I specifically don't like short layers and told her so but she insisted it was uneven and had to be a particular length. Worth noting they do not have a great deal of products helpful to curly hair and the products they do have are definitely not Curly Girl Method approved. The end result was decent but again not good for curls. I'm sure they do an amazing job of you have regular hair. Also I really appreciated that they accept Venmo payment. read more

A friend and I were in town on vacation last weekend and we wanted to get a blowout and/or nails done before heading out for the night. After a quick Yelp search for nearby places, we found this salon and gave them a call. They were very friendly and had availability for two blowouts right away, so we headed over. So happy we stumbled upon this place! They offered a reasonable price for the blowouts. After a nice shampoo/condition and scalp massage, Nazima politely offered me a haircut to help with the shape of my hair. I had been secretly craving a haircut as I recently tried a DIY trim and slightly messed it up. She described what she would do to refresh the layers and increase the volume, etc. She seemed very professional and knowledgeable, including re: what to do for my naturally curly hair which I usually wear curly. So, I decided to go ahead with the haircut, and I'm glad I did! Meanwhile, my friend was able to get a manicure done by a lady from the adjoining nail salon simultaneously with her blowout! This is a great, reasonably priced for a guy to get a haircut. I come here whenever I'm in NYC, which is about half the year. I discovered it maybe a few years ago and have been returning again and again ever since. I've had both Nika and the other stylist (sorry, don't know her name) cut my hair, and have been really happy with both. They both understand how I want it cut, but they're also not shy about saying if they think trying something a little bit different might be worth a try. I'll admit I'm pretty vain when it comes to how my hair looks and I had my hair cut at a lot of places before I found L'Envie. I knew Dilya from years ago, and I regret it took me so long to come find her at this new studio she moved to. I had three inches cut off and she provided such a thorough haircut and very collaborative during the process, verifying length being ok with you, etc, definitely recommend her. I had a terrible experience. I came here because the salon is close to my office and they have good reviews. I wanted to lighten my existing balayage that I had done at a high end salon. A few red flags jumped out at me as soon as I walked in. I probably should have left, but I felt the good reviews weren't there for nothing. Firstly, the "salon" is an extension of a nail salon. Secondly, a woman was crying, absolutely hysterical, about her balayage. The staff was obviously stressed about this woman. They ignored her cries, occasionally responding but generally brushing her off. The next few red flags came from my own dye job. Michael slathered bleach without direction or skill. Compared to the job done at my previous salon, he was crudely applying it with no pattern. As I am sitting waiting for the bleach to take effect, him and a few other stylists come to me asking the same question- which color I wanted and to show them a picture. I felt it odd, but explained myself every time, only to be cut off mid way. By the time another flag was raised, it was too late to leave. I spotted a few of the stylists gathered around a color book, discussing in Russian. That's when I knew I was not in good hands. My hair is shampooed. As I am being washed I feel a few extra hands come to the sink and explore my hair. There is frantic conversation in a foreign language. I ask what's wrong, is everything okay? A few moments of silence and then a garbled affirmative. Turns out everything was not okay. My hair ended up being botched horrifically. I had bright orange strips, randomly placed, in uneven patterns all over my head. Gone we're the subtle highlights I had not only a few hours ago. Instead, i looked like a cartoon. I even sent a picture to my mom, in disbelief, of the botched job. She was in shock, joking that my own father would probably walk past me in the street instead o interacting with my strange new look. Michael picked up on my distress and brushed it off, continuing to happily chat and work with his other client he took on in the mean time. No he did not approach the issue as soon as it transpired. He casually looked over his shoulder and turned back. The other stylists at least made an attempt to fix it. I asked for a neutral black as was my natural hair. They attempted to talk me out of it, but there was no way I was trusting them to try again with coloring. I figured all black would be impossible to mess up. I ended up leaving with black in some parts, orange in some, hair. Just horrible. I also had to pay for the botched job! I'm still reflecting on how ridiculous this whole situation is. How the "stylist" casually reacted to the mistake, how he, on the first place, just slathered chemicals around with no direction or purpose. At the end of the debacle, he had the gall to try and charge the full price for the balayage. I countered with just the price for the black dye, which was way too much for what my hair had to go to, and the cover up of the l high end salon job that I had prior to this disaster. "L'ENVIE", has proven to be a more than adequate barber shop/hair studio. It's always difficult to determine the skill level of a hairstylist based on the experience of others --the vast majority of barbers (as Mark puts it) are in fact butchers: their innate skills are lacking, their styling options are horrendous, and their core nature is nothing short of brutal and aggressive. Marquis Markette and Jack have recommended that I go to an actual stylist rather than the typical tainted barber who claims to know how to give a proper haircut. Some of the barbershops have been OK, most have been a VERY poor experience ... the smallest percentage have proven their expertise ,,, Although I'm not a barber, I can equate it to skiing (based on MANY experiences) --it doesn't take much to learn how to ski, but to be an excellent skier, THAT requires both tremendous practice and supreme natural ability ,,, Upon entering "L'ENVIE", (for the haircut option) the customer will receive a hair-wash and will then be prepped for the haircut. Marina was my barber, and overall, she did an excellent job. During the haircut, after I asked Marina about my specific hairstlye, the barber next to us commented that it won't be easy to do a good job on my hair-type. I found that comment to be extremely offsetting. Maybe he chose the wrong career? While I was getting my hair cut, I noticed that my hairstyle was more 'cabochon' than 'faceted', so Marina spent the time creating a fading that wasn't too drastic in order to combat the 'cabochon'. She spent the necessary time and effort to do so. The owner (I believe) was very respectful and professional. It is important to be heard, and BOTH the owner and Marina provided that excellent care and customer service. The overall experience was great, though because of the butchers out there (i.e. previous bad experiences), I couldn't take my eyes off the mirror to enjoy my tea ,,, "L'ENVIE" is highly recommended !! 4.5/5.0 read more

This place is across from my office, so I decided to give it a try based on the positive reviews. I went in for a haircut, and was given a great rate for a highlight/cut so I ended up getting my highlights touched up with a partial, in addition to a cut/blowout. (I usually am pretty breezy about haircuts, but I can be finicky about color.) Nika did both, and she was like a mindreader in terms of knowing exactly what questions to ask, and exactly what style/color to deliver. She NAILED IT. Very very happy with the result! Thank you to Eva (not sure of the spelling!) for correcting an awful haircut I got in Park Slope. I called on Saturday night after leaving my regular salon with a botched Pixie cut and they were able to squeeze me in on Monday night (I couldn't make it there Sunday).
