I wasn't super hungry when I stopped by here but I was getting my car washed at Bright Car Wash next door and needed to take some medication with food. The service was great. I ordered the spinach quesadilla and added mushroom. I was surprised that it was a single tortilla folded as opposed to the two tortilla round flats I am used to but it was loaded with queso cheese and spinach and tasted delicious. I wasn't hungry and asked them to hold the rice and salad that usually comes with it as I had filled up on chips and salsa. My dragon boat crew and I dined here for lunch after practice today. We rolled in 15 deep, at around 11:30am, and I have to commend the staff here for taking such great care of us! The restaurant was fairly empty, but I can understand how overwhelming it is to see such a large come in without notice. Nevertheless, they greeted us with smiles and happily assisted us with moving tables together. I ordered a small mango margarita on the rocks, and after taking a couple of sips, I immediately regretted this decision. The margarita was the sweetest, most heavily syrup'ed margarita I've possibly ever had in my life, and I contemplated adding water to the drink to dilute it, but instead just waited for the ice to melt so I could continue drinking. Perhaps it was the fact that we overwhelmed the bar that resulted in my margarita being less than their average quality. I'd give their margaritas another shot one day but probably still with hesitation. For my meal, I ordered the Huevos con Chorizo, based on the recommendation of several people around me. For this $6.50 lunch special, the dish comes with rice, beans, and tortillas. This was a ton of food and an absolute bargain! The huevos itself looked and turned out to be a bit dry, along with the rice, and I had to end up added spicy salsa to my plate to get through it. The chorizo is flavorful but not outstanding. Even though I live a couple minutes away, I never noticed this Mexican joint until some friends moved in next door. It was an hour before closing but we decided to drop in for a quick bite. The server dropped off some chips and salsa at our table after we ordered our food. Food took a little longer than expected. But it's ok because the chips and salsa kept us company. We both ordered combos, which turned out to be way too much food for us after the multiple baskets of chips. I wanted the chalupa and an enchilada AND rice. Good thing there's a combo for that! The ground beef was a little dry and the Mexican rice was just ok. Everything seemed to taste the same after a while. We stopped in here for dinner one night - we were staying at the Residence Inn just up the road and wanted something close and good for dinner. I consulted the Yelp app on my iPhone and we decided to check it out. I ordered a Burrito with ground beef, plus a side of guacamole and and order of their cheese dip to dip the tortilla chips in. Neither was very flavorful, so I asked for hot sauce. Our server brought me a cup of their hottest sauce, a bottle of a hot sauce, and a cup of pickled, chopped jalapeños. I threw the jalapeños into the cheese dip along with a good dose of the hottest sauce and mixed it in, and did the same to the Guacamole, then tried the bottled hot sauce on the Burrito. Hidden Gem Alert -- I've eaten at plenty of authentic Mexican restaurants in Atlanta but this by far is one of the best dives I've found. The area isn't the best but this establishment is super clean and inviting. The menu is pretty authentic and offers an array of different items to pick from, to please any palette. I went with the Texas Pollo because I like the peppers and chicken idea. The chicken is great quality and you can taste the "homemadeness" (not a word, lol) in all of the side items. They got pretty busy while we were there and stayed that way even when we were leaving. The food came out extremely quick and the prices are unbeatable! Long story short, I JUST called to place an order for myself and 2 other co-workers. Best bang for your buck and they don't shy away from using cheese. It's a lot of ooey goodness. There's plenty of parking space and upon entering-this place looks like it used to be a fast food restaurant. If you're thinking margaritas-this place is pretty good for it too! The only downside is that their frozen margaritas wasn't slushy, but more watery. Maybe it's because it was large size? FYI:the large is HUGE. Shared the mango frozen margarita and it was still a lot. There was not a lot of tequila and for mango it wasn't as sweet-which is good. This place is really close to our home and it seems to be really popular at lunch and dinner because we don't have many full service Mexican restaurants in our area and this one isn't that bad. Their prices are super affordable and they offer a wide range of Mexican restaurant classics. Usually I get a combination but I opted for a Special Mexican dish during this visit. They give you free chips and salsa and the salsa is delicious and a little spicy. I got the Pollo Texas dish with chicken covered in peppers onions and cheese. I though they would use a white cheese but it tasted as if it was American cheese so that threw me off. If I got it again I would ask for light cheese. The service was good and our waiter was quick for the most part. When we asked for to go chips and salsa he said they would probably charge a $1 for a extra chips which seems unnecessary because if we sat longer we would've just been given them. It was fresh, lemon-y the way I like it, creamy, and not too thick. Win-Win! Also, their margaritas are strong so forgive me for not remembering all the little details of my meal, but my seafood fajitas were awesome. I don't know why they call it seafood because it's just shrimp and scallops, but it does taste spicy, hot, and fresh. I enjoyed it with the sour cream and beans. Most places have cheese and lettuce with their fajitas, but that's okay, it was still good. I liked my seafood better than Chef Justin White's steak fajita tacos. Dropped in on a whim on a Friday night at around 730ish. I drive by this place all the time but it never caught my interest until now. Place was pretty packed when I got there. I got the last seat before a wait list started. They give you free salsa and chips (can't stand Mexican places that don't give you at least Salsa). Salsa is taste pretty fresh and has a nice spicy kick. Chips were nice and thick so you can really get a nice scoop of salsa. I ordered my go-to Tex-Mex dish: Steak Fajita Quesadilla. It only comes with rice, but for $9 that's still a great deal. The fajita quesdailla is basically a quesadilla filled with meat, bell peppers, onions and of course melted queso. The steak was fairly tender and well seasoned. The cheese wasn't too overwhelming and the overall size of the quesadilla was just right. They give you a little bit of guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream to add to the quesadilla. Overall I was pretty pleased. The quesadilla passed my test. I also ordered a margarita (tequila, agave, and fresh lime) and it was absolutely horrible. But...i'm not going to bring down the rating. A small tex-mex joint that looks like a fast food restaurant with a makeover sponsored by Corona, La Botana provides a decent quick meal option if you're stopping at 300 down the street. You won't find anything earth shattering or original on the menu, but the portions are big, the service is fast, and the food is prepared well. Although the chips were the bright yellow, El Azteca variety...they were free an on our table within seconds of sitting down. The salsa comes served in those horrible plastic carafes you see at lots of cheap tex-mex places, but tastes better than I was expecting. There's some chipotle and actual seasoning in this stuff, rather than the typical bright red spicy ketchup you'll find at most places in a similar price range. As for the price range, you can't beat the lunch specials. They offer almost full sized versions of a lot of the normal menu items for $6.00 each. Order that with a huge glass of water and free chips and salsa...even with tax and tip it's very affordable. read more

La Botana Mexican on Savoy Near Dunwoody This is my first visit to La Botana, a local Tex-Mex business I've seen for many years, that can be found along the Chamblee-Dunwoody/N Peachtree Rd/N Shallowford Rd access road (Savoy Rd on the South side of I285) at the intersection of Savoy and N Shallowford. This place always seems to be busy - I would say it's a favorite among locals looking for the typical Americanized Mexican food that acted as an introduction into a whole country's cuisine. I have a nickname for this type of Mex food - I call it "schwag Mexican" - not because it's either good or bad, but rather due to its rather limited flavors and "safe" heat levels which only hint at authentic Mexican food. If you're looking for the real thing, then drive on to Buford Hwy and sample any of the limitless number of restaurants along that corridor, especially those where you see Latinos lining up at the door. If you're looking for a bit of nostalgic Tex-Mex cooking accompanied by a cerveza or three (or a salt crusted margarita!), the La Botana will certainly fit the bill. The building sits in a fairly well traveled corner with an entrance from either road - there's plenty of parking so don't let that throw you off. I think it was originally a gas station (like a Magic Market or 7-Eleven) so there's parking all around. The menu features all the schwag Mexican you could want with all the usual suspects and various combinations of tacos, enchiladas, burritos etc served with mushy-beans and red rice. I don't think you'll find anything "special" here but you'll see many familiar items. It's always amazed me that so many of the schwag-Mex restaurants in this town have the same Combination Dinners - when I'm inclined my favorite is the Burrito, Enchelada and Taco (I get them "con pollo") - and I've found that in Atlanta this is usually either the #11 or the #21 if the combo menu is larger. In this case it's the number 11 - it's like all the restaurants have copied the same menu going back through the years - I wonder what two restaurants started it all? It would be an interesting study to see how far back it can be traced (yeah I know, the geek in me just keeps coming out). La Botana also has the ubiquitous lunch menu on the back. I always try to call-out the salsa in these places - I rather liked this incarnation. A bit more spice that the bland red stuff that's most commonly served, this salsa also had a bit more cilantro present. I didn't try the alcohol since I was headed back to work (this was a late lunch - I had errands to run then hit it with my dining companion about 2:00 PM - the place only had a couple of tables and the servers were obviously bored). The interior still had the remnants of Cinco de Mayo decorations. Speaking of service, I thought the servers were good in general if a bit slow (but that was probably due to the time of day). Once the food was ordered the food came out within just a few minutes. I ordered my usual lunch portion chicken fajitas and my dining companion the poblano con pollo (the pre-baked stuff poblano had chicken poured over it). The food was blistering hot and in general good if a bit bland, but it met my expectations. In general La Botana was good if not great. I think it's a great location for meeting friends, particularly after work or to get a quick bite when the traffic along I285 is so bad it's not worth sitting in it. I did like that there were a couple of local brews available on the menu - that's always a good sign - on this day they had Sweetwater 420 and Terrapin's Hopsecutioner along with a rather extensive list of Mexican beers. Thank you Chuk V for suggesting the carnitas. Far too many Mexican joints pull their unnaturally perfect cubes of slow cooked pork from a freezer bag before dropping them in the deep fryer. Not La Botana. Take a moment and go look at the picture. Go on, the review will still be here after you're done there. I had three hunks of crispy slow cooked pork awesomeness, each the size of a child's fist. These were generous pieces carved off a pork shoulder in the back, not some pre-packaged chicanery. I have been lulled into complacency far too many times and had my heart broken by mediocrity. Pork shoulder deserves better. Carnitas are the way to get a Southern barbecue lover to appreciate Mexican flavors. The pork alone was awesome enough, but in addition I was pleasantly surprised by how good the beans were. Someone back there learned from Mom what beans need in order to not be something skipped over on the plate in favor of more chips. The rest was pretty forgettable, but I will certainly be back for the carnitas. A friend of mine lives super close to La Botana and suggested a group of us go there for margaritas one Thursday night. I am the biggest fan of frozen strawberry margaritas - and they offer margaritas by the PITCHER here - so I couldn't say no. Their parking lot was packed when I got there around 6 pm. Inside, however, wasn't too busy. There weren't nearly enough people in the restaurant to account for all of the cars outside. I wondered where everyone went after parking there... Haha. Our group of about 10 decided that it would be best to sit outside in their patio area. This was perfect because they didn't seem to have enough seating for our group inside, but their "covered" patio-area was fairly empty. We started with a pitcher of their regular margarita. I thought it was alright, but I'm not a fan of margaritas on the rocks. I like the blended, frozen kind - and it has to be strawberry. So the next 2 pitchers were frozen strawberry. Yay! I have to admit, the strawberry margarita had a funky aftertaste, but it was probably the tequila that they used in it. Not sure what kind, but there seemed to be a good amount of tequila in the margarita. I was very satisfied with it! Their complimentary chips and salsa are good. They're not the fresh, homemade tortilla chips, but I still thought they were good, and the salsa was great. I could barely taste the cilantro, which is a HUGE plus for me! =) For my entree, I got the Carne Asada Burrito. I asked the server if they put cilantro in it, and he said no. Score! The burrito was huge, and it comes with a bit of sour cream and guacamole with shredded lettuce and rice. I was impressed! Since it's covered in a green sauce, you have to use a knife and fork to eat it. The steak and other good stuff inside the burrito was flavored really nicely. It was delicious! La Botana is located on savoy street right next to 285. You can definitely notice their sign when you pass by. Parking: There are limited parking spots available. Every night, especially weekends, it can be hard to find a spot. There are covered patio area available, no bar area inside. We have been ordering takeout or dining in for a long times. It did take us a few tries to find our favorite dishes there. Because the shredded chicken is not the way we like, kind of plain; grounded beef is very mushy to me. BUT! Their grill chicken breast dishes are delicious, breast comes out tender with the topping you preferred, seared to just right with a lot of juice! My favorites are the chicken fajita quesadilla and taco de carne asada. These two dishes are full of flavors and came out just perfect! The tacos come in corn tortillas with grilled juicy steaks and onion cilantro. Pairing with their special hot salsa just perfecto! Big salsa to go is available for $2 with two bags of chips. It's the first time we've ever not left a tip, and that's only after waiting a considerable amount of time trying to flag down our waitress to discuss a discrepancy on our bill. Of course we had the same waitress that was punching in orders right at the entrance while 3 or 4 groups came in and couldn't be bothered to greet us.
