It was around 3:30 pm on a Sunday afternoon that my husband and I walked into this place. It is the only Mexican restaurant in the vicinity of Helen proper so we didn't have a choice. We were seated immediately as it wasn't busy at all. We were just craving for quesadillas so we made our orders as soon as we were seated. Service was pretty quick. But boy were the quesadillas such a disappointment The meats (I had chicken and my husband had the steak) were very salty...like they were marinated in the Dead Sea! The quesadillas were excessively greasy too...practically swimming in old used oil cause the chicken didn't taste like chicken and the steak didn't steak like steak either. You know when you have a server trying to show off that doesn't write down anyone's order...then comes back several times to clarify....then still gets it wrong? It won't happen with Amber as your server! She provided some of the best service I've ever had. It made our day on the River even better. Arrived for late lunch on a busy Saturday afternoon - the Dog Haus was taking too long to seat our big party. This place accommodated us all outside on the patio and despite being a party of 9, they were super attentive. Amber even split the bill for us! (Don't worry - we tipped her big!) Food was great - they have queso and guac comes in chunky or smooth consistency. Your choice. Arroz con pollo was delicious and the fajitas were perfect. Menu was big enough that everyone will be happy - from the meat eaters to the vegetarians. Margarita pitchers were available and these were the best option for our big party. Food came out quickly and we had plenty to take home. Amber even offered advice for where to go that night in Helen (Paul's Margarita Bar) and we ended up having a blast. Came in to get some food after tubbing. The ambiance and service was already mids. My wife went to use the restroom and as she was using the bathroom I looked at the price. 17.50 for 3 tacos is outrageous. No sane person would pay that so we decided we would find somewhere else to eat. I did not try the food so I cannot rate that, but them talking trash as I left the restaurant put a bad taste in my mouth. I personally wouldn't eat here just because of the service and price. I dipped my shrimp in the salsa to save it. They would be better off serving it with that salsa and maybe a tablespoon of garlic - but never burn the garlic!! We saw the low reviews, but a different local place also had low reviews but we gave them a shot and they were good (Troll tavern). I had rice and refried beans and the food was decent, I just got full quick as always. K liked his pork carnitas. JA thought the steak needed more seasoning in her fajitas but she ate it all. M had 2 ground beef quesadillas with rice & refried beans but he was too full to eat the second quesadilla because they were nice sized. JO had a steak quesadilla & queso on the side. A great alternative when you want to escape from the typical German fare in Helen. The food is 5 stars (and the options are fantastic!). They have all of the classic Mexican food options/combos, plus low carb options too! Service is good, some room for improvement (but it's a tourist town so you kind of expect that). Helen gets crazy busy during the summer and Oktoberfest, so be patient if visiting during those times. The ambiance is nice, and there is great outdoor seating. read more

The same is mostly true here, my combo fajitas were good but nothing special. Same with my daughter's bean burritos and rice. The one surprise we had here was a dish the waitress suggested to my husband that was off-menu and she said she couldn't pronounce the name. It was tilapia covered with steak and a spicy sauce. He was thrilled with the suggestion and the opportunity to try something that isn't available on every menu! What really bumped this place up to four stars, was our appreciation for their patience with our late arrival and with our menu suggestions. Like every restaurant in the area, they don't have enough staff and service was super slow. I expected that so I wasn't caught off guard by it. I ordered fajitas and cheese dip, both of which were OK. Certainly nothing special about it but it wasn't bad at all. The thing that made me leave were the flies. I didn't notice anything until they brought my food out and then suddenly I was swarmed by flies! I had as many as 5 crawling all over the place at the same time. First I have to talk about the waitress omg. She has by far been my top waitress this year. She was friendly very upbeat. I believe her family owns the restaurant. She get ready to head off to college. Unbelievable young lady. The food here was fantastic and normally when eating at a Mexican restaurant they only have Mexican beers. But these guys had an local IPA. And didn't over charge you for it. Cariño, olvido tu nombre. They use American cheese as the cheese in the enchiladas. So gross. I asked for cheddar or any other cheese and they were like, we only use American in our food......which is amazing if I'm eating grilled cheese. I'm eating Mexican though, so assume it should be jack cheese or at the very least, cheddar. But no. It's American. read more

We were visiting Helen, GA for Christmas and the restaurant we were planning on having dinner at was closed down, so walking back to our hotel we saw La Cabana and thought we would give it a try since it was on our walk back. GREAT take out service and care during COVID-19. We called ahead, they were prompt, and they brought it out to the curbside for us with minimal contact. They wrote a personalized message in every container and threw in a free flan dessert as a token of gratitude. We were out of groceries and honestly were just were so tired of cooking at home and wanted a date night -- and are so grateful we could support their small biz. Great and delicious food -- if you are sheltering in place in the Helen area and are out of groceries and can't get them for a few days--a FABULOUS option. Service was horrible from the time we sat down and until we attempted to check out and stood at the register for a long period of time before anyone decided to help us. Food was ok at best ... definitely not authentic! Salsa seemed to be missing cilantro and had very little flavor.
