Very cute bakery and coffee shop tucked into the corner of the flagship Half Price Books store. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helped walk us through a few options. Had the Horchata Latte, Seasonal Strawberry Guava Latte, Avocado Toast, and Ham and Cheese croissant and everything was delicious and had that local cafe vibe. There was seating inside the actual coffee shop part as well as more seating inside the HPB and an outdoor patio too. Overall the experience was average and nothing to write home about. The matcha was really good and the server was extremely kind, but the whole process was incredibly slow on a day where they didn't seem to be too busy. Wow! La Casita Coffee spot is a true hidden gem you must check out. This amazing coffee shop/restaurant is located inside the largest Half Price Books in Dallas, which is also their original location. Frankly when I was told there was a coffee shop inside the bookstore I wasn't expecting much, but damn I was wrong! First of all, the coffee shop itself is super cool and has this speakeasy tiki bar vibes to it. Their menu is Latin American inspired and they have an amazing selection of baked goods. They do have some available sitting inside the restaurant, but you can also sit at one of the tables inside the store, as well as their patio area. Since I am not much of a breakfast person I decided to try their Cubano sandwich. First of all the sandwich was huge and packed with delicious meat. You could tell the bread was freshly made and overall it paired perfectly with the meat. Frankly, it was probably the best Cuban sandwich I've had in years! My friends ordered their chilaquiles which are a very popular menu item and said they were delicious (I'll take their word for it). La Casita Coffee is such a cute little spot tucked in a corner of Half Price Books. The spot is so warm and cozy. Cafe seating is reserved for dine-in only, but there's seating right outside of the bakeshop for to-go orders. All of the pastries looked divine, but I went with the pesto parmesan croissant since I wasn't craving anything too sweet. It was decent, nothing memorable in my opinion. One of my friends tried the matcha latte and liked that it wasn't too sweet. Another one of my friends tried the hibiscus ember berry lemonade and said that it was sweet and fruity. They both enjoyed their drinks! There's plenty of lot parking available. I don't think I'd come here for the sole purpose of grabbing a drink or a bite. The steak and eggs has a phenomenal flavor and was cooked to perfection with a charred onion salsa. The Cubano was great with a good portion of sauce. Does not come with sides so we ordered sweet potato fries - they were topped parm and grilled peppers. They could have been crispier but they were good. The bourbon fried chicken sandwich was massive! Fried chicken was perfect and the jalapeño ranch added the right zest and was also on house made focaccia. This is a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop/cafe. The ambiance of the place is really nice as it is situated inside of Half-Price Books with a wooden interior. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. There is wifi and a couple of outlets for those that want to work from the cafe. The food was good. I liked the chilaquiles. I thought the french toast and eggs were okay! Both the coffee and the matcha were really good! Highly recommend the matcha! They also have a weekend specialty pastries menu that has some pretty cool items I need to swing back around to check out! La Casita is directly inside the Half-Price flagship Bookstore. They've added a new electronic kiosk for putting in your order. When I ordered a latte on a Sunday afternoon the place was positively hopping! They had a long backlog of orders and ended up staying open past their closing time to get everyone's coffees made. I tried a caramel latte which came in a cleverly constructed paper cup with a spout, which I assume is better for the environment. A wee bit pricey at seven and a half bucks, but a nice pick me up for the afternoon. Seating in the restaurant is limited, but the bookstore is enormous with many reading nooks to sit at. read more

I was impressed with La Casita Coffee--this place is a gem. Their cold brew is my new favorite. I ordered it with a splash of cream, cinnamon, and sugar-free brown sugar syrup, and it blew past Starbucks and even my usual go-tos like Merit and LDU. Rich, smooth, and well balanced. They use eco-friendly cups which I appreciated! The pastries were also impressive. I stopped here after a run at white rock lake looking for a sweet to treat myself with. I took home the cinnamon cruffin and a pop tart--both were flavorful, and just the right amount of indulgent. The service was very friendly and entertained my questions helping me choose between the many pastry options available! They have weekend exclusive items, so if you're looking for a wider variety to choose from, check them out on a Saturday or Sunday. I'm so happy the La Casita Coffee location opened because I've been able to visit much more frequently! - Atmosphere: La Casita Coffee is attached to the Half Priced Books flagship location. The space is small, but with cute, tiki vibes. If you are only ordering coffee and pastries, you can also sit in Half Priced Books or on their patio. - Service: For a full service meal, La Casita is order at the table. I recommend a reservation for weekend brunch so you can guarantee a seat. If you just want pastries / coffee, you can order at the counter. Expect a line during busy times, but it moves quickly. On my most recent visit I saw they added mobile ordering. The employees at La Casita always provide great advice on what to order. - Food / drink: The La Casita pastries are hands-down my favorites in Dallas. I love their monthly rotating items (only Saturdays and Sundays). You must visit in October for their Halloween specials! One of my favorite standard menu items is the ham and cheese croissant. Their drinks are also top notch. I love the ginger mint matcha in the spring and sweet potato latte in the fall. The salted honey matcha and Turkish lattes are great standard options. If you're able to get a seat, the food is not to miss! I think they have some of the best chilaquiles in town. The banana praline pancakes are perfect for a sweet treat and the sandwiches are great if you want something more savory. In the evenings, this location turns into a tiki bar. I haven't tried their evening food yet, but I enjoyed my cocktail when I went in the evening and I hope to try more evening food and drinks soon. I also have to give a shout-out to their to-go drink containers. They are compostable and their large size folds up so you can get the perfect sip without a straw or a gaping hole. I was so excited to come to this place! I visited with a few of my friends because what better way to spend a saturday evening than with food and then exploring a giant half priced books that the restaurant is in? We got here around 5pm so unfortunately there was not brunch anymore but we still made do (: We started off with the croissant monkey bread and berry cobbler muffin. I wish both items were warm because I feel like our rating would have been higher or if we got here right when it opened and they were fresher. The berry muffin was super dry and not much berry taste I would definitely skip out on this one next time. The monkey bread was good but again, hard and cold so if it was warm and fresh then maybe it would have been way better! I also think if there was some kind of icing or glaze on top it would help with the dryness as well. As for entrees, we all shared everything. I got the kimchi fries, loco moco burger, and kimchi carbonara. The kimchi fries were really good! I love sweet potato fries and they were also really crispy. The only thing that I didn't like was that it said kimchi fries but there was not any kimchi on it lol it had a few sauces on the top but was more like a spicy mayo. The kimchi carbonara was not anyone's favorite unfortunately and like the kimchi fries, there was no kimchi either lol I feel like it is very misleading to call it kimchi with no kimchi. The flavor combination was also really weird to me. It tastes like peanut butter, the noodles were undercooked, and the pieces of mushroom tasted like bacon. I wouldn't get this again if I came back. The loco moco burger on the other hand was really good! I think this had to be everyone's favorite dish. We are all a fan of mushrooms so the sauce was really good and with the burger patty, fried egg, and chili oil. I had been wanting to try La Casita ever since I heard they opened a location in the flagship Half Price Books. I got the ham & cheese croissant, a seasonal pear-shaped pastry (don't remember the name or ingredients), and a Turkish latte with rice milk. Everything was good but my expectations were high. The Turkish latte was delicious with a good balance of holiday spices. I had never tried rice milk before; it seemed to make a decent latte. The ham & cheese croissant was good but not very filling or remarkable. The seasonal pear-shaped pastry was interesting looking. I began eating it from the outside in but it was too dry and cakey. I quickly realized you have to eat the inner filling with the outer cake for it to really be edible. I liked it after I figured that out but I still didn't think it was amazing. Overall, I really enjoyed La Casita but it didn't quite meet my high expectations given its reputation, and I didn't feel like I quite got my money's worth. Nevertheless, I look forward to trying some of their other coffee drinks and pastries in the future. I stopped by La Casita for a coffee with my family when we were doing some shopping at Half Price Books this past weekend. It's a small cafe area in the front right corner of the store, and it has three entrances you can use (from the exterior of the building - you don't have to go through the store at all that way - and from the other two sides of the cafe). I've been shopping at this Half Price Books flagship store for more than two decades, so I've visited this cafe in many past iterations. It's great to have a charming local spot in the bookstore now (La Casita has four locations, including this one). My coffee - a cortado - was very good, and served in a to-go cup that doesn't require a lid (no plastic needed), which worked great and I loved. However, I was a little confused when I walked in. As you walk in the front door, there's a little hostess stand. Are you meant to check in with her? Only if you're eating? If you're getting a coffee but want to sit? I wasn't sure, so we said hello and then walked in. It's made a little more confusing, because La Casita has a cocktail concept open in the same space. I believe that opens at 5pm daily and I thought maybe that's why they had a hostess stand. But other than seeing the name of the cocktail concept - La Tiki Paisa - in lights behind the bar and a few bottles, I couldn't really see evidence of the cocktail concept when I walked in a little before 5pm. I ended up getting in the line to order a coffee. You order from an iPad, not a barista, which might keep staffing needs lower, but did seem to slow the line (you wait, not knowing what's on the menu, and then all of sudden you're at an iPad with pages and pages of items - I spent a minute or two looking for evidence of drinks from La Tiki Paisa, but couldn't find anything). Everyone was so nice I believe the servers name was Tess and was so kind. It's connected to a library with a huge selection but most importantly the best coffee I've ever had. It wasn't a case of saving the best for last, it was a case of enjoying the best first. Though a bit small, the cappuccino was delicious! A side story: When our father would scramble eggs for my sister and me, he would pretend to be ready to spoon them onto our plates when they were what now as an adult, I would deem cooked perfectly soft, as he loved them, but we would yell, "No, Daddy!" until he continued to cook ours till rubbery. In La Casita, I chose just a couple of side orders: scrambled eggs and sourdough multigrain toast. I truly think my dad couldn't have stomached how undercooked these eggs were. I tossed, flipped, overlapped, hoping the heat would continued to cook them. It helped but I could only bear to eat maybe two-thirds. The grain bread seemed to have been grilled, not toasted. It was so thick and heavy, a little greasy, and nothing like 'toast'. W had a crispy potato egg sandwich concoction which she tried to salvage by deconstruction. Total failure. I found myself envying the plate of the little boy beside us. He looked to be about five or six. A few silver dollar pancakes were accompanied by slender green apple slices. Clean and light. Amazing place it's small and quaint and in the middle of a book shop. I would suggest for sure making a reservation if you're going on the weekend it was my first time here and it was well worth the weight while I waited. I walked around and looked at the bookshop. I will say on a busy day. It does take a little bit for the food to come out. But the host was able to see. I was a bit in despair about eating, and they brought us some pastries on the house. They all were amazing. We had the lamb in the steak and they were both amazing 10 out of 10 would recommend. The coffee is also really good. They now have a regular now. My partner and I had a very disappointing experience. Around 4:30 pm on Sunday, a young woman wearing a gray sweater and white undershirt abruptly tossed a "Reserved" sign onto our table while we were already seated. There had been absolutely no indication that the table was reserved. Instead of politely informing us, she spoke in a needlessly hostile tone, saying something like, "This table is needed for other customers, sooo..." When we explained that we were paying customers and had no way of knowing the table was reserved, she became flustered, said "Whatever," and walked away. It was shockingly rude. I later spoke with two other customers who had experienced similar behavior from the same employee, and more than one said they wouldn't return because of it. I shared all of this with the manager, Arlet, including the experiences of a family with a small child and another woman who had also been treated poorly. This level of customer service is unacceptable, and I hope management takes it seriously. read more

La Casita just opened inside the Half Price Books on Northwest Highway and Shady Brook. I used to spend a lot of time at the old coffee shop, Black Forest, in the same spot. Back then, it was all bottomless coffee from pump carafes. La Casita keeps the old bones but feels more polished, like a fast-casual restaurant. I arrived at 8 a.m. on the first Monday after their grand opening. Only two people were there, but it filled up slowly by 10:30 a.m. It seats at least 40 to 50 people comfortably inside and another 10-12 inside the bookstore. Lots of folks were sitting at the bar, which surprised me, since it seems the traffic to the register is destined to be clogged. The baristas were sharp and excellent. The gluten-free banana muffin was creamy, more than I deserved on a Monday. The cortado was strong, tasted like it came from Italy.
