Saturday night family time spent at La Cocina mexican restaurant. It was our first time here so I had no expectations. Let me just say !! The atmosphere was not just relaxing and friendly, it was not overdone with any fuss. The inside of the place is small yet comfy with its designated seating for any size family gathering. Ok now to the food! Authentic, pleasing, not overly spiced to allow its flavors to speak for themselves. I cleared my plate in less than 5 minutes. Needless to say it will be my second home of comfort!! The kids loved the attention they received from the staff. Their kid-friendly plates were easy to enjoy. I think we made a mistake and came here when we should have gone to the other restaurant in town named La Cucina. This place was the worst. Poor service, poor drinks and poor food all at a high price. We should have headed to Cantina Louie to spend less and have WAY better food. The chips were not crisp which probably means they were undercooked. The salsa tasted like Pace from a jar, lumpy and bland. The empanadas were a terrible disappointment; tiny and hard with a weird mayonnaise dip. The queso was the only decent part of the meal but at $6 it was maybe 3 oz. We each ordered a margarita which was strangely lacking flavor. It was watery and bland. Lastly I had a chimichanga and my husband had the fajitas. The fajitas come out, they light them on fire and then take five minutes before they bring the tortillas. So strange. He just sat there waiting since you can't eat fajitas without tortillas. My chimichanga was small and had some queso on top that looked like it had been sitting awhile. It was not crisp but rather soggy. The refried beans were flavorless and inedible. A huge disappointment and over $65. Save your money and get some better food elsewhere. read more

I've found the reviews on this place to be very hit-or-miss. Not only the reviews here on Yelp, but also other websites, and even recommendations by friends... Some people LOVE this place, some people HATE this place... Me, I thought it was pretty darn good. Perhaps it's just like any other restaurant, it all depends on when you show up. I went for lunch, and the place was pretty much empty, me and about 5 other tables. I was seated immediately after walking in, and the first thing I noticed was the awesome decor. From the outside, there is a lot of loud colors and neon signs, but the inside, great murals, great decorations, nice music playing through the speakers. After ordering drinks, I was served chips and fresh made salsa, and it was fantastic. The salsa was unbelievably fresh and tasty, nice and cool, and the chips were crisp and yummy. The menu looked pretty good, there were a lot of choices on there, and it was hard to nail down a choice. I finally decided on the taco salad with ground beef. After about ten minutes, this plate of deliciousness arrived on my table. A hot, crispy, crunchy shell, filled with ground beef, lettuce, tomato, and cheese, with fresh guacamole, sour cream, black beans, and salsa on the side of the plate, all served with a small Mexican Flag in the food. The portion was pretty damn big, and the price was only around 8 dollars, I left completely full and didn't have to pay much for it. All in all, the food was tasty, fresh, and I was completely satisfied. The service was great, and I loved the atmosphere. I will definitely be back. read more

I dined here several years ago. It was not memorable. Tonight I was in the mood for Mexican so I stopped in again. So disappointed and sad to say their food is still forgettable. I had the appetizer dish with empanadas. Just unseasoned fried beef in a shell. Then try the tamale, rice black beans and yucca fries. All of them were mediocre. It's as though they put no seasoning in their food. Even the salsa was bland. It had tomatoes and cilantro but very few onions and no jalapeño. Just not good. I'm sad to say I will not return. However the wait staff was more than attentive. I had several waiters serving me asking me the same questions again and again. It was as though they were not communicating with each other. So, I might have been expecting too much, given my friends' yummy sounds and excitement at the prospect of dining here. It's at a strange location, which is fine... there are plenty of those in St. Augustine. The wait was awful long! The staff ignored us for a good 5 minutes (you know, they look at you, don't smile or say hello or just a moment please, just go about what they were doing as though you were their own reflection). And THEN when they have time for you they're sweet as sunshine. The service was pretty good once we got seated and ordered. The food... I've had way better. I didn't tasteanything impressive. And I got a mad tummy ache within an hour of leaving. My friends LOOOOOOVED it. La Cocina is a quaint restaurant with great atmosphere and decor. Their fajitas are amazing and fish millanaise is equally good!!! The best of all is their sangria!!!! The pitcher of it is a bit pricey but well worth it if u r a foodie. The menu is well balanced and over the years i have tried almost everything on it. I am never disappointed!! We picked this place when visiting St. Augustine due to the positive reviews. Our experience was not as positive. With a family of five one small salsa just doesn't cut it. Especially if you take 15 minutes before coming to take our order. It would have been excusable if the restaurant was packed however we were one of three parties there. Once ordered the food also took a long time to get to us. The food was not bad even if the price was a little high and portions a little small. However, we did not have a good experience. read more

For starters the service was lacking. 10 min to get chops and water. The salsa was watery and had way too much cilantro. The prices are too high for the portions as well. We have lived in St Augustine for 8 years and this has always been our go to restaurant. Two years ago we moved and still drive across town when we need our Mexican food fix. Last night we celebrated our daughters engagement with a party of 50. She wanted a Mexican fiesta and I have to say I was worried that some might not like Mexican food (like my brother). Naturally we had it catered by La Cocina. From the planning of the menu, to the presentation of the food, Andres (one of the owners) was by my side. I'm a big fan of La Cocina, and recommend you go there to eat. Their menu is great, service is great, and the atmosphere is great. However, I would not recommend ordering delivery, as half of a $55 meal ended up being the wrong order. I ordered the Flaming Jose Cuervos chicken fajita, and all I got were three paper thin chicken breasts that tasted like shoe leather. Not bell peppers, no onions, no tomatoes. Do not eat here if you're hungry. The portions are very small especially for Mexican cuisine. I ordered the chicken fajitas and it may have been one 6 oz. chicken breaths mixed in with a half pepper and half an onion. It barely filled 2 tortillas. If your food items are going to range in the $10-$16 dollar range there should be some substance to them. So many better options in St. Augustine. read more

I have been to this place a few times now with my fiancee'. La Cocina was the location of our second date and I could not have chosen a better location. The staff is very friendly and pays close attention to the detail of your order as to ensure there are no mistakes. I have not tried everything on the menu yet, I sure plan to though. My favorite item thus far is the taco salad with the delicious fresh salsa and guacamole on the side. I highly recommend this restaurant. We went to the restaurant last night with some friends who came into town. The food was very good. The service was great up until the end of the meal. We were finishing up dinner as they were ready to close when they started trying to pick up our plates before we were even finished. They then brought over the check and stood there waiting and watching until we paid the check. We were then sitting outside to finish our visit when they turned off the lights on us. Not the best way to finish off a great meal. Too bad that will be our LAST impression of this restaurant. read more

Totally unexpected!! I am not from the area and a clerk in Belk's recommended La Cocina highly. My best friend and I stopped in on our way home from St. Augustine. Mexican cuisine is my favorite next to good old southern comfort food. The chile relleno was to die for and the fresh salsa is some of the best I have ever had. I cannot say enough about this place. The place was almost empty and I inquired as to why a place with such great food was not busier, I was told that they have "competition" such as Chipotle and some other tex-mex chain. YUK!!! We enjoyed our meals which were beef burrito and tostados. The flavor and presentation of the food was great! My husband, who is not a Fan of mexican cuisine, said he really enjoyed his dinner as it was authenic mexican food. The homemade salsa was the best I have ever had. Awesome flavor - you could tell it was freshly made. The decor inside was breathtaking. It really brought out the mexican culture and had some amazing artwork. We did have to wait a little longer for our food then normal but I would go back in a heartbeat. I dont mind waiting as long as i have chips and salsa and something to drink - our server did a great job keeping us refilled!
