As someone who lives in California, I'm only familiar with La Colombe because of the draft cans they sell at Trader Joe's. So when I was visiting DC for work and saw a La Colombe within walking distance to where I was staying, I knew I had to make a stop. La Colombe is what you'd a expect a hip coffee joint to look like. I ordered a draft latte with oat milk and needless to say, it was great. They don't add ice to it, so that was a bit odd. You definitely can't let the coffee sit for to long otherwise it just tastes like old lukewarm coffee. Generally, it's a great coffee spot in a cool little alley. read more

We stopped here while on vacation in DC. The location is in a cool spot in an alley with lots brick and murals. My vanilla latte was delicious and beautiful. The draft latte was ok--my husband wishes it was colder as it was more lukewarm but the flavor and consistency was different and he liked that, but probably won't order again. The croissant pastries were delicious, but they don't warm any of their food for you so that was a small disappointment that would have made the food experience better. In town for a conference and needed a coffee fix because 7am EST = 4am PST, and I ain't about that 4am life. Heard about this draft latte people have been raving about and decided to come check it out for myself. All I can say is the hype is real!! It tastes like how I would imagine Shaft smooth talking would be. The mouth feel is like coffee velvet. They offer a regular and triple--the triple has triple shots while the regular has two. Same price, so why go for two when you could go for three reasons to make your day better?? Overall, probably one of the top cups of coffee I've had. Also, they have free sparkling water on tap. I kept hearing great things about the coffee so I finally decided to check it out. So glad I found this little gem close by our hotel! Blagden Alley is a fun backdrop - enjoy the art; watch out for the random delivery trucks. After reading reviewers raving about the draft latte, I went with the triple draft latte. It was exactly how I like my coffee: almost chocolatey with just a touch of bitter. The foam was dense and perfect like a stout head. I seriously thought about buying a second latte to take with me. I'm going to be thinking about that draft latte and unfairly comparing it with every lame/subpar iced coffee I drink in the future. I also bought three croissants: chocolate, almond and ham & cheese. The ham & cheese was OK (I'm spoiled by the insane ones from Flour Bakery - Boston), but I happily finished it, and was impressed by the two sweet pastries. My friend is probably the most dedicated repeat customer of La Colombe, and she couldn't wait to take me here during my D.C. visit. Surely enough, there's a reason why she's hooked to this little coffee shop on Blagden Alley because oh boy...it was probably one of the best coffees I've ever had. I've tried many coffee shops in Austin (and trust me, there are a lot of awesome places), but none compares to La Colombe. I decided to try the classic Draft Latte and was instantly amazed by the flavors. Smooth, silky, creamy, and just the right amount of bitterness. I definitely regretted not buying a second cup because it was simply that good! The shop also sells a variety of coffee beans packed for to-go, and I highly recommend getting a box of the Savoia (it'll make your mornings so much better). That being said, I'm definitely coming back here the next time I come to D.C. (and probably leaving with at least 2 cups this time). read more

What a cute little place! A fair warning, there is so limited table space for such a popular, lively cafe - so if you'd want to secure a spot, I suggest coming early. I got the latte and a pistachio sort of brioche and croissant fusion (as explained by one of the baristas). Both were quite tasty! I definitely recommend the pistachio. The filling inside was plain delicious and went well with the latte! The overall atmosphere of the place is enjoyable and I liked how it's sort of tucked in, far away from the busy streets. By now, many people have probably at least heard of La Colombe, even if they are not "into" coffee. Not only does its founder have a TV show, the opening of the DC location has generated much buzz amongst local blogs. I first visited their Philly café a few years back and have been in love ever since, so you can imagine my excitement at La Colombe coming to DC. The café happens to be in one of my favorite neighborhoods, so that's a plus. It's bright with minimalist décor and a bit of industrial feel due to the high ceiling and exposed pipes. Staff, which from reading blogs, I believe are the manager and his wife, were friendly enough. No handlebar mustaches here, but that could change. And of course, the wonderful coffee. They only offer whole and skim milk, and I was able to get over myself enough to order a latte with whole milk. Their beans are strong with rich flavor, and I've always needed to add a little bit of raw sugar to their lattes. I also picked up an almond croissant, which was huge and delicious. It's definitely meant to be shared. The croissant is flaky and buttery with the perfect combination of crispness outside with soft layers inside. It's my favorite croissant in the area. Prices are reasonable--a latte and croissant cost around $6. I pay close to that for a latte alone sometimes. Obviously, I love La Colombe and highly, highly recommend visiting. read more

I'm always tired. At this very moment I am so tired that I wish I could melt into a puddle on the ground and nap so hard that I wake up bewildered in another century. Coffee is my lifeblood. Unfortunately, La Colombe isn't quite the respite I had hoped for. It has the perfect aesthetic for an instagram backdrop if you want your followers to mistakenly think you went to Brooklyn for the weekend, but the coffee and the service fall flat. They use hot (or at least warm) coffee to make their iced drinks, so the ice melts pretty instantaneously. I asked for more ice and the barista rolled their eyes at me. They add an extra shot to their iced coffee, presumably to combat the melting ice. I am generally unaffected by caffeine but the extra dosage made me feel like Shoshana from that episode of Girls when she accidentally smokes crack. Their hemp milk (I was told they didn't have soy or almond) curdles instantly when added to any of their hot drinks. Their hot chocolate has no taste. But the croissants (which they don't make themselves) are really good. read more

We stopped here for some hot coffee and I was absolutely delighted by the hipster/locovore/indie vibe going on. For one thing, La Colombe is positioned on a street that looks and feels like an alley. I wouldn't have called it a street except that it had a name and (at one point when we left) we observed a car driving on it. We would have no idea that La Colombe was there if it weren't for Yelp. Next, La Colombe has a rustic/industrial-chic interior. There's lots of wood, windows, brick, yadda yadda. There were plenty of outlets and many laptop/tablet using folks plugged into them. There was a neat water station (see my picture) that freely dispensed both regular and sparkling water. Third, La Colombe serves ONLY coffee and a few pastries. There wasn't a menu. I don't know how people got pictures of lattes and cappuccinos. There was only a board the described their two roasts. I got the Ethiopian roast because it was described as possessing mango and rosewater flavors. Our two medium coffees were $10. And we added our own cream and sugar. The coffee was delicious. I could definitely taste the notes of mango and rosewater. I am normally not so taken by this sort of joint. I normally resist the trendiness of it and recoil. I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it as much as I did. My turning point was the price for the coffees which is absolutely rediculous. read more

First, I love that it has oat milk in it because I can't really have dairy. Second, how trendy is it to have coffee come out of a tap?? Third, it was lightweight and you don't need ice!! That's a game changer, often people get ripped off with the amount of ice that is dumped into their coffee cups but you definitely get your money's worth here. I keep on going back and forth between how to rate La Colombe. This is not a perfect coffee shop, for a few reasons, but the coffee here is quite arguably the best in the District. Ok, so 5 stars. The coffee is just damn good. And the baked goodies are always, ALWAYS impeccable. Best chocolate croissants I've had in DC (and that is saying something, ha!). And, I mean, how can you not love the gorgeous red&blue&white ceramic dish ware?! It's gorgeous. The building itself is awesome, and the location is both fantastic and infuriating (first time I ever tried to come here I got hopelessly lost...and whenever I try to explain to La Colombe newbies how to get to the Blagden alley location, I'm greeted with confused faces). When my husband was on his 5 week paternity leave for the birth of our second daughter, he took our toddler here for special daddy-daughter time almost every.single.day (we should seriously invest in stock). It's just a few blocks from our house so it's an easy place to frequent. And now, with so much time spent sipping here, his taste buds are completely spoiled and no other coffee will compare. Ha. Here's what I don't like (yet for the quality of the goods I just can't downgrade to 4 stars): -The attitude. Lots of people already commented on this, but while some baristas are totally chill and nice, some (a lot?) have a ton of hipster-know-it-all-coffee-snob 'tude. Kind of a turn off when you are checking it out for the first time or are unsure what to order. -Speaking of being unsure what to order, THERE IS NO MENU. Just go in knowing what you're going to get and whatever you do, do not, I repeat, DO NOT ask for a chai latte. I came in on Mothers Day morning to treat my mom to a cup of coffee and quickly realized this place is my new JAM. I kid you not I think I will be here everyday, they are doing a little too much right. No non fat no vanilla sweetners. Okay the fair trade all natural coffee - I understand this fad, not thrilled by it but not turned off by it. The atmosphere of this place is amazing. Open garage doors on warm days. Cute little tables inside and out for a work space or coffee date. You can tie your dog up outside. Blagden Alley oh how much I love you. But lets tall coffee here. My mom got a drip coffee with cream, smeh could leave that to any other coffee shot. I ordered the "red" something which was a shot of espresso poured over iced coffee. Delicious with a little bit of cream - but oh how I love iced coffee. But while we were preparing our drinks we discovered the best thing ever - the LATTE ON TAP. Being the noisy (tourist for my Mom) we asked for a sample and this thing brought me in the next morning! A nitro infused latte on tap is the next addiction you didn't know you needed. Ask for it with a little bit of ice, and you'll be in love. Its frothy but not too heavy and has a kick of caffeine! And it cost significantly less than a starbucks latte would have. I'm not sure where they're sourcing their croissants from, but they are legit. I've lived in France, and these are some of the closest I've had in the states. I had both a cappuccino and a drip coffee at La Colombe, wanting to try both the espresso and one of their drip varieties. Both were fantastic. DC really lacks in truly outstanding coffeeshops, but La Colombe is really bringing up the group average. Some have mentioned that prices are unreasonable, but I didn't find them to be. Drip coffee was $2.50, cappuccino and croissant together were $7. Staff were also really friendly. I was fully expecting the cold hipster shoulder. The barista even joked with me! Bringing them up to the rare full five stars is location. Who doesn't love feeling like you've stumbled upon a secret spot in an alley, tucked away? I prefer the La Colombe in Philly, which was the first La Colombe I visited. I'm glad the coffee company has expanded to DC though, giving Washingtonians a chance to try their old-school dark roasts. This La Colombe is a bit tricky to get to if you're not familiar with the area. It's literally in an alley, next to the restaurant Rogue 24. There aren't a lot of seats and most of them are always hoarded by laptop-toting younglings. No Wi-Fi though. Like all La Colombes, there's no set menu. I usually ask for a latte and their iced coffees are very good and uniquely prepared. My boyfriend and I also picked up one of their whole bean bags and they were able to grind it onsite for us so we can use it for our Chemex! For now, they don't have an onsite roaster; everything's shipped from their roasting facility in Pennsylvania. I love the gorgeously painted Deruta Raffaellesco ceramic cups and saucers, one of the reasons why I wanted to have my latte at La Colombe and not take it to go. We stood at the counter and sipped our coffees. We noticed that they even had tea brewers, and apparently they make their own tea blends. They also have some pastries and macarons for sale. I prefer Philly's La Colombe for the coffee quality and larger space, but I will say that the DC La Colombe does a much faster job at preparing your coffee. Service can be a hit or miss though, and it gets really crowded and loud in here. read more

So my disclaimer is that I'm not a coffee drinker, but the barristers were all very nice despite this. They explained the different types of coffee they had (and different techniques of brewing), then guided me towards their teas. That being said, their coffee beans smelled delicious! Yes, bummer that there isn't any internet, but I think it's a perfectly lovely place to chat, or read. I loved the space! It looks like it may have previously been a garage??? Regardless, there is a large roll-up door. I went on a rare sunny, but not humid DC afternoon, and they rolled up the door, allowing us to enjoy the sunshine (and the breeze!), mostly in the shade. La Colombe is tucked away in an alley off the beaten path. Don't be freaked out because you will be walking through an alley. It's a small shop with a decent number of tables along the left side. There's no menu and like the other reviewers said - you won't find a dozen different syrups here. It's unpretentious and simple. The staff will be more than happy to answer questions even during peak times if you need help. My go to is a good latte or cappuccino - never fails. Great quality for an even greater price. La Colombe is the cute coffee shop of your caffeine induced dreams. It is located on Bladgen Alley which is, in fact, an alley (shocker) so you'd better off ditching your car for your bike or walking...if not, you could park on 10th St around M and N sts NW. I love the clean look of the place and the relaxed vibe. The furniture is not comfy (but the quality of coffee makes me forget about this part very quickly). On the weekends, be prepared to fight for space to sit down. On to the best part: the coffee. I went for the iced coffee which had a smooth and strong flavor. I split a chocolate chip almond toffee cookie which was soft and chewy with crispy but was veryyy sweet. They have a cool water dispenser for free sparkling or cold still water. Today was opening day for the much anticipated La Colombe. The atmosphere is trendy, bright and cozy. I went in first and foremost to check it out and to get a drink along with something small to eat, but they were sold out of food by the time I got there. I also noticed a lack of menu, but they only serve coffee and espresso drinks with not much room for specialization from what I saw (flavor syrups, milk choices, etc.), so maybe there never will be a menu? My cappuccino was delicious and had a really unique giraffe looking design on top. One thing that really impressed me were the prices! One drip coffee and one cappuccino for $5!!! Oh, and just a warning, I am proudly one of the biggest coffee snobs in the District so brace yourself for some dorktastic comments: La Colombe is located in Blagden Alley and doesn't really have parking. It's more of a bike or walking to coffee shop, aka neighborhood coffeeshop. Remember those? That was always the idea and then some other chain stores ruined it. Well, Colombe gets back to basics and does it perfectly. I dropped in for a latte at 730am on a Wednesday and was really impressed. The coffee was smooth, smooth, smooth. I was so impressed I purchased a bag on the spot. The milk was expertly foamed. The latte was served "for here" using the super cool cups and saucers that are a trademark of La Colombe. I loved everything about the latte. I also got a plain croissant and was really impressed. Probably the best croissant I've ever had. Seriously it was that awesome. One of the cool features they have in the shop is a seltzer and regular water tap. Both are filtered. Both are awesome. Really great detail. I was less enthused about the Alpha Dominche coffee makers that are custom installed. They are finicky and the barista admitted a number of pretty big flaws in the system. Whatever, I liked the espresso just fine. But just so you know, this system is all show, not all that awesome for a finicky coffee snob. The shop is really tricking cool. It's an old warehouse type building with exposed bricks and beams and stuff. Super organic, but really clean. I like it. And a couple of walls are 100% windows. In fact, one entire wall consists of glass garage doors that can be opened up when the weather is more agreeable. You really can't beat that atmosphere. As a side note, I was really against liking La Colombe because their founder is all over TV and kind of becoming too commercial. But the shop is really great. The only thing missing? A kitschy record player spinning hipster vinyl that i've never heard of but which is too-cool-for-school (the music was a bit on the generic coffeehouse side of things). Since moving to DC, I've been struck by how uncool this city is. A big city full of millennials, and it still feels stodgy. And no good coffee, either. I'd given up looking, and I stumbled upon La Colombe by chance. I found my coffee, and I found where they're hiding all the coolness, too. This is hands down the best coffee I've had in DC. Maybe even anywhere. It's that good. The location has the most wonderful feel to it, and I love the open air in the summer. Bonus - it's a short jaunt from metro. In a sea of Starbucks and Coffee Beans, I was trying to find a nice independent coffee shop in DC. I stumbled upon La Colombe and thought I found that, only later did I realize they had twelve locations spread across Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York...that's still pretty small in comparison though. Overall it was a great setting for a simple cup of coffee, I enjoyed my experience a lot and was able to recharge (both mentally and physically with the amble wall outlets) for my travels around DC. I'd recommend this shop that seems to be frequented more by locals than tourists. read more

Nearly 5 years ago at Jean Georges in Manhattan, my dining companion and I loved the superlative coffee they were serving. When we inquired, our server said that it was La Colombe brand. While not close to DC, he mentioned that the main outlet cafe was closer to us (Philadelphia) than NYC. While we went to Philly twice, we did not get a chance to stop by the La Colombe cafe. Lo and behold, earlier this year, I read that La Colombe opened a cafe between M & N, 9th & 10th Streets in the growing Blagden Alley. Of course, this would mean a trek into the center of the city for coffee. When we arrived, we noticed that there was no parking--though we later found some along nearby streets. After walking inside, we were struck by the unique Steampunk coffee machine (for making individual cups of premium coffees of single national origin), cute pastry case filled with an assortment of impressive sweets and savories, understated industrial interior (exposed brick, spray painted transition between ceiling piece and wall) as well as the genuine pride with which they prepared coffee, espresso drinks, etc. COFFEES: - House Blend-Corsica (Dark Roast): Fantastic balance of flavors with a smooth finish free of the burn present in dark roasts like those at Starbucks, it is a great overall drink and has enough punch to enjoy over pastries. - Steam Punk (Panama, Haiti, Brazil, Ethiopian Kaffa, Ethiopian YirgZ): Ranging from lighter to more fruity and earthy, these are coffees to sip and enjoy for distinctive flavor notes (without milk). Overall, they are a bit light and could use more beans to up the concentration of flavors. *All coffees are served in fancy table wear with the option of adding half-and-half or steamed milk, plus simple syrup and various sugars. PASTRIES: - Pistachio-Cardamom Morning Roll: Nutty, spicy, and sweet, this signature item is easily our favorite and most distinctive of La Colombe's sweet offerings. - Croissants (Butter, Almond, Chocolate): They have more density and oomph than typical French bakery items, but they are still delicately flavored and elegant while being full-bodied. Almond is our favorite with the butter being a close second. The chocolate, while pleasantly bitter and barely sweet, is the most plain of the three. OVERALL: La Colombe serves premium quality coffee and pastries at a great value. In fact, the coffee is only $2 (less than a small cup of Starbucks in Falls Church) and the Steam Punk is only $3. The pastries are ~$3.50, which is very reasonable relative to its flavor and size. There are a couple of parking spots around the area which you have to pay. Once you find parking you will see that La Colombe is in a cute brick building. Walk in, and the decoration is amazing. There are tables inside. The coffee is great and I ordered an Oat Milk Draft Coffee which was amazing. They have different types of coffee which they rotate so you may like something at one time but not carry it year around. A great way to try new things. They also carry pastries and ordered a matcha cookie which wow, amazing. Overall, love the coffee, pastries, and atmosphere. Great hang out place and once you are done, you can walk around and look at the murals. There are a ton of them. It's like a mural alley and you can find a map inside the coffee shop to see where they are. read more

Location is nice and clean but the cold brew was watery and weak. Not the worst but not the best. 3/5
