I was looking for somewhere other than Urth Cafe to go for a late lunch today. I found this place by searching for cafes on Yelp. Its only a half mile from my apartment, so I thought I'd check it out. Nice, charming place. The menu is quite expansive from breakfast items (served all day), to sandwiches and salads. You are served with a small basket of mini pastry items the bake fresh in house. The food was fresh and clearly made to order. Pricing is on point for the area and menu selection. However, the drink prices are quite steep, e.g. $5.50 for a latte! Urth Cafe is still far superior in terms of food quality and taste. In addition, Urth has a much larger selection of top quality tea and coffee. La Conversation wins with a larger menu selection and the fact that they serve breakfast all day, however, but they can because they are not nearly as busy. Overall, not a bad place to go for a change of pace, but I'm not inclined to return. read more

Stopped in for breakfast this morning and was impressed with the food, but not the service. Hubby ordered the Dante's, which came with the most amazing pumpkin pancakes. He's not a fan of coffee, so he ordered hot chocolate, which was delish and served in a cup as big as my head. ;) I opted for coffee (thumbs up) with the savory ham & cheese croissant and a side of sliced tomatoes. I was thrilled with the choice. It was perfectly flaky and seasoned. Yum! To start, they brought out a basket of pastries. Each and every one of them was stellar. On the way in we passed a case of other baked goods and I have no doubt that any of them would be reason enough to make a trip here. The service was the only reason I'm not giving the full five stars. The staff is pleasant and kind, but not at all attentive. My meal came out a good 10 - 15 minutes before my husband's order, which I'm sure was the fault of timing issues in the kitchen and not our server. However, my coffee was only refilled once and I spent almost 20 minutes without anything to drink and waiting on our check. Had the restaurant been extremely busy, it would have been understandable, but it was only moderately busy. If you're not in a hurry and can look beyond the service, the food was really exceptional. I wouldn't recommend this spot for a workday lunch, but for a leisurely breakfast it was definitely a spot I've give another shot. read more

The only thing I am a fan of is their Pumpkin Soup... they make it on a regular basis, especially during October thru December -- but make sure that you have to call that the cook has it available on the menu for that day. If you call early in the morning or the day before, they can make it. Update - now I found a place which makes the Pumpkin soup much better and fresh every day without having to make the hassles of asking if they have it or not! The place is Assi Supermarket in Koreatown. See my review on it but their Pumpkin soup with big chucks of Pumpkin sells out fast - and very inexpensive for a whole 1/2 quart for around $3.00 which is self-serve at the Assi Supermarket. I tried their pancakes, and for the price, I think its over-rated and there are better pancakes else where -- I never tried their pumpkin pancakes so if there is no other cafes offering it --- then I would understand why someone would love their pumpkin pancakes. They allow dogs on the outside tables to sit with their owners which is nice. The Cons: The service is very slow and having tables so close to each other you can hear all the conversations around you; so its loud. I do think its overpriced for other items on the menu. If you are going to get somewhat normal service is to go on their off hours; don't ever go on their Saturdays and Sundays since there is a sign-in sheet and people waiting for tables. read more

La Conversation has been on my list of places to try forever since it's right by my house. Finally I went there this weekend for brunch. The place is quaint and charming, much like you would expect from an old B&B. This place gives out the cutest little bread baskets complete with miniature croissants, scones and muffins. Let me tell you, the appearance of it is much more appealing than the actual taste as all the pastries other than the croissant were incredibly dry. But, I do think those croissants and the fact that you know it's free more than makes up for it. Who am I to judge free? The pumpkin pancakes were on point. Moist and packed full of flavor. My favorite though was the salmon and caviar baguette. Full disclosure, yes they are fish eggs but dude that's no caviar! I was bamboozled! I should have known though since the dish was only 18.00. However, dude the dish is huge and easily can be shared between two people. The smoked salmon tasted fresh and of course went so well with the capers and cream cheese. Some of the prettiest tomatoes I've seen as well. All in all, the meal was fine but nothing spectacular. read more

My new favorite eatery! I passed by this place many times en route to Sunset but I'm so glad I stopped by. The baked goods are beyond incredible, a piece of the apple tart send me reeling back to Paris - where the pastries are rare treasures. My steak salad was grilled to perfection and the quiche resemebled Parisian style cuisine which is beyond rare in Los Angeles. It was fluffy, ample and delicious! The waiter catered to our puppy, too and provided water for him without having to request it. It is a decadent and wonderful spot for brunch, dinner parties and lunch! read more

Cute French inspired cafe on Doheny. SUPER dog friendly with outdoors seating and they have water dog bowls and treats ready too! We walk here with our dogs and the place is consistently decent. Sundays however you had better have patience as they frequently get things wrong. I think the kitchen gets confused. That said the staff is usually friendly and it's dog friendly outside seating. For me those things are important since I love to take our dogs everywhere. For the most part food quality is ok, neither good nor bad, simply average. For what you get it is definitely overpriced, but I simply go because it's near my house, so location works, otherwise if it was not nearby I would not go out of my way to go here. read more

Trust me friends, you're better off grabbing a breakfast burrito at the oaks in the Franklin village for $8.00 and a gourmet coffee to boot. The coffee here was mediocre at a diners best. If you've smoked in excess for 20 years and have lost your sense of smell and taste then a coffee might be delicious at la conversation. This place is a delicious and adorable little hidden gem! The vibe is super warm and cozy - a welcome reprieve from the sterile ambiance that seems to be en vogue these days, and the staff is super welcoming. Cher, my waitress, was super sweet and friendly. So far I've only had the eggs and toast and an incredibly delicious peach tart, but the rest of the menu looks really good. Went here for the first time yesterday and liked it a lot! I wasn't supposed to have any of the treats in the basket but they were sorta calling my name so I tried a couple of them and they were so good I had to finish them off. I ordered the salad nicoise and it was great- big portion, fresh tuna, good eggs and nice tomatoes. My only problem was that the lettuce choice wasn't great. I prefer mixed greens but no biggie... Came here for breakfast this past Saturday with the bf, my pa, his wife, and my new mini weenie. Thankfully we were able to snag a spot outside, because my pooch is only 8 weeks old and I wasn't about to tie him up all alone. One thing I was really diggin' about this place is that they give you a little basket with an assortment of their muffins and frosted croissants (all mini sized). It was such a hefty basket I thought my dad had ordered it on the sly, but nope...it was free! We did however, order the brioche for everyone to try (which is basically a cinnamon roll with less icing). So, after stuffing my face with pastries, I remembered that we were going to Crumbs shortly after, and if I wanted to even be able to take a bite of another sugary treat, I should put the brioche down...which was hard because it was really very tasty! For the main course, we ordered the Eggless Burrito, Huevos Rancheros, and Eggs Benedict. The Burrito was very hearty, stuffed with chicken and lettuce, it made me feel like I was being somewhat healthy after the pastry pig out. The Eggs Benedict were very good as well, and served atop a halved-toasted-buttery croissant instead of the standard english muffin. I didn't try the Huevos Rancheros because my pa managed to scarf it down in record time, so I'm assuming they were quite delicious. The server was great, never had to ask for refills on coffee. He also had a great sense of humor when my pops started giving him a hard time about the measly side of fruit. I came here with my patient who is in a wheel chair. My patient wanted to sit on the far wall against the window rather than the table closest to the door. The staff there were more than accommodating, as well as the customers we had to squeeze by. (Which was refreshing.) We had a small basket of pastries; some baby muffins and croissants with icing on top. The baby croissants were cute and tasty! Didn't ever think to put icing on top of one! And I'm pretty sure they offered Arnold Palmers (half ice tea half lemonade) from scratch. I don't like the mix personally, but the presentation of this simple drink looked delicious. Bottom of the glass was lemonade, the top half iced tea. I swear, simplicity is best. ANYWAY! For breakfast we had, pumpkin pancakes with scrambled egg whites and an eggs florentine. I didn't try the pancakes, but from my knowledge, there's no way to screw up a pumpkin pancake so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say they were delicious! Now, the eggs florentine, as well as the eggs benedict, came on a croissant. Just the idea of a croissant instead of an English muffin had me smitten. I knew I was going to enjoy this.... yet sadly... I was so utterly disappointed. When you break the egg, it is supposed to mix with the hollandiase to make this creamy, saucy, extra depth of flavor to coat the other components of the dish with. The egg was poached perfectly but there simply wasn't enough sauce for my liking. Another aspect, which I'm being super critical of, was the spinach. TALK ABOUT F***ING FLAVORLESS! Taste like damn near CARDBOARD! I hope the kitchen staff had sauteed this spinach with clarified butter or maybe even olive oil. Added some garlic, shallots, maybe an onion, and added salt in pepper while still in the pan... I really hope they did. I would like to believe that the kitchen staff just didn't season enough rather than not at all... The lack of flavor on this four component dish completely threw it off. I expected better. NOW, with my critique out of the way... I do want to say I will definitely be back to try something else, the menu still looks amazing! And the case FULL OF PASTRIES AND BAKED GOODS?! Came here with my friend while we were in LA for the weekend. We walked from our hotel and didn't really know what to expect from the outside. It's the cutest little French style restaurant and the inside is adorable. We sat outside and it was pretty good people watching (Saw Amy Adams come in with her husband.) The brunch menu was big with a ton of good options. My friend and I both ordered the eggs Benedict and a cappuccino. It took about 15 minutes to get our food (which the menu prepares you for) but it was literally the BEST Benedict I've ever had. They serve it to you on a buttery croissant with just the right amount of hollandaise. Both eggs were poached perfectly. Came with rosemary potatoes that were seriously delicious. I love this place! My friend got the basil omelette and I got waffles with strawberries and bacon on the side. Oh, this waffle was heaven on my mouth. They forgot my bacon and I had to ask for it again. No big deal. The service was good, especially since it was Saturday brunch time, there were many people. I live relatively close to this place and I feel sad that I don't make more of an effort to frequent it. The last time I went there (a week ago) I had the Filet Mignon sandwich. The baguette was crispy and soft and the meat was exceptional. The other time I was here I had the pancakes, which are also tasty. The biggest draw of this place though has to be the vibe. It's a little, very low profile spot, off of Doheny and Santa Monica with cafe style seating inside and out. I know others consider it a cheap knockoff of an authentic Parisian cafe/bistro, but the truth is it has a character and quality all its own. I do agree that the service is something less than stunning and if that was better I would have given this place 4 stars. I've never had a chocolate croissant so packed with chocolate ever in my life until I bought one from this cafe. Good God, I needed a nap after eating that thing. It beats a fuckin' bun from Cinnabon. It's delicious, but love your body, and drink tea/coffee while eating this croissant and let it digest for at least four hours. The red velvet cake is also good! Light, not too heavy and not too sweet. I've bought the cake a few times on different occasions, and every person I bought it for either asks me where I bought it or if I can bring some again. Went here with friends for brunch and had a delicious florentine style eggs benedict. I was so full by the end of the meal I felt I needed a nap and some tums. We sat outside on the sidewalk in the sunshine although it was a muggy LA day where the clouds were going in and out. Our waitress was pleasant and didn't rush us at all even though we were campers, lingering after our check had been paid mainly because we hadn't seen one another in so long. My friend ordered the pancakes which looked tasty and fluffy. My other friend ordered plain boring eggs. I used to work around the corner and would go here almost daily for a pastry and coffee. It's probably also the reason I gained ten pounds, but that's besides the point... The pastries are friggin' awesome. Most other bakeries I know of in LA are either cupcake-centric or croissant/muffin-centric, but this place has it all, and then some. So if you just want a zucchini muffin (the best one ever-so moist and the perfect density--I never thought I'd describe a muffin's density in my life, but La Conversation inspires me to), or a spinach and cheese croissant, or a chocolate-dipped cookie, they've got it. Definitely no calorie-counting here, though. I do love the gougere--the savory puff pastry they bill as "no sugar, no salt!", but conveniently leave out "all butter, all cheese!" Last weekend I actually sat down for breakfast and got the oatmeal. I thought perhaps a bit steep at 6.75, but then it turned out to be the best oatmeal ever. There's something about the oats--big plump oats that are the perfect level of mushiness--with lots of fresh bananas and strawberries on top, and milk, raisins, sugar, and toasted almonds on the side. Holy delicious. Service may be lacking, but I just love the atmosphere--a little cafe/bakery tucked on a side street with kitschy decor. But there's something authentic about it, as opposed to all those other LA establishments that attempt authenticity, but end up feeling exactly like a place that's "trying" to be retro. read more

Sounds cynical but I didn't want to like this place. I hate looking for parking but I found a meter spot relatively close by and the interior decor is supposed to be cute and very "french" but it's more like some old ladies home. But despite all that, the food was so freaking delicious. We ordered some steak sandwich and a filet mignon salad....no complaints. My salad was fresh, and the filet mignon was perfectly cooked. So this bakery was originally in West Hollywood on the corner of Nemo and Doheny just off of Santa Monica Blvd. It closed in January of 2019 when the owners retired but I was recently at a party that had pastries catered by them! The family that worked there since 1982 has kept the business alive. I looked up their website and found out they are still open for delivery! Fresh croissants and cakes delivered?! YES PLEASE! Delivery fee is minimal much better than what I would have paid on Uber eats. It was a neighborhood staple and I hope that with the support of the neighbors who love them they can bring a new storefront to us soon. I went here today, wanting to try something else and reading the reviews, it seemed like a likeable place. It really is - charming and quaint. It's nice and little but gives a bit of home-y vibe. Like a good place to read a book, or laze around, or chat with friends. I've never had pumpkin pancakes, and it was quite interesting, but the croissants were good. I took one one of salmon and cream cheese for lunch. Prices are moderate, there is a small parking area at the back, so be prepared to park on the street! Considering the fact that I'm used to the Parisian culture(small tables/sitting closeup to strangers dining in a cozy space not minding your conversation to be publicly broadcasted, becoming part of the 'conversation orchestra'), my review is biased. Americans would probably think it's a bit stuffy, and that there is barely enough space to comfortably put their upper ligaments on the surface of the cute tables. Food is really savory. I personally like their pumpkin pancake and quesadillas. For dessert, my favorite is the Saint Honoré, which I've tried at multiple French boulangeries(U.S.&France), and this place is awesome at it. But it's not for everybody(if you don't like fresh milk vanilla creme+beard papa's+chocolate croissant+crisp glazed sugar, you probably won't like it). Scrumptious bakery selection & an innovative menu! I ordered the "Eggless Burrito" last Saturday on a brunch date with my sister that left me smiling & savoring every last bite. I was told the wait here could be a little daunting, but we must have just beat the rush as we were seated immediately at 10:45 among a few other open tables. The street was littered with waitees by 11 o'clock. The complimentary croissants are delicious! We ordered mini red velvet cupcakes for the road from the bakery inside that didn't disappoint. This was an AMAZING breakfast. The food was amazing but the service was terrible. The hostess sat us outside, we waited 15-20 minutes without a word from anyone, not even a drink order. Then our friend decided to bang his fists on the window and someone came right out to take our order. The food was great but the service was awful.
