I haven't been there yet or even tried there stuff yet but felt compelled to review based only on the customer service I received when placing a relatively large order with Bebe (I hope I spelled it right) over the phone. I called to place an order for 7 dozen croissants to pick up in a few days and Bebe was so kind and helpful! I asked for a break on the price, given the size of my order, and she didn't hesitate to take care of me. Overall, I was very impressed with Bebe's attitude and kindness and wanted to acknowledge her for that. I live down the street from La Conversation and have been dying to try it ever since I moved in. I finally motivated myself to walk there for brunch one Sunday, and am definitely glad that I did. It has the feel of a neighborhood establishment... we walked there and it felt like most of the people eating there had probably done the same thing... which is something rare and great in LA. I feel as if I came here more often, I could definitely establish myself as a "regular" as a lot of the patrons probably are. They are very friendly and accommodating (I saw them add a table outside when there weren't any left a couple wanted to sit outdoors). I had the breakfast burrito, which was made exactly as I wanted.. mostly with eggs, a light amount of cheese, and spinach, wrapped in a tortilla... no grease. It can be customized base on what you like in your burrito. What I hate is when they try to put too many things in the burrito, or it is greasy, or heavier than it needs to be.. but La Conversation had it just right. Everything is made to order - as they remind you on every page of the menu - so be prepared to wait a bit for that quality. They give you a basket with mini muffins in croissants to tide you over while you wait, which are just the perfect amount of pastry to not ruin your appetite. I love the neighborhood feel of the place, and that, well, it's in my neighborhood. I'm not sure if I'd drive from afar and look for parking (very difficult in this area) to eat here, but it's definitely a go to for those within walking distance. read more

I can't believe I'm the only one giving this STUPENDOUS place a 5 star rating. What's with you people! This is my favorite cafe in all of greater Los Angeles. The staff is SO nice. I've met the owners a couple of times cuz they're usually out and about chatting with guests. The decor is downright charming (French-ish). The wallpaper looks like drapery, but it's just wallpaper! I almost ALWAYS see a celeb at this place, yet don't mistake it for the Ivy or some other foofoo uppity restaurant; La Conversation keeps its sweet, down-to-earth feel. All menu items are a dream realized. Potatoes are perfectly seasoned, so many salads to choose from, pumpkin waffles (MMmmm), brie/turkey/caramelized onion sandwich (dying here), oatmeal, pastries, and more. For breakfast, they'll bring you out a basket of mini pastries that include mini croissants with a glaze drizzled on top, palmier-type thingies, and various flavored mini muffins. As for location, it's near Melrose and Doheny and it's NOT hard to park. You have PLENTY of options. There is a small lot for maybe 6 (?) cars, metered parking up and down the side street where you enter the lot, and lots of (unmetered!) parking on Doheny. Definitely try this place out. I can only speak for the baked goods so far but you can tell they are expertly crafted and the price tag reflects it. No diss to French bakeries and cafes but it may not have been the ideal place to order a breakfast burrito. It was slightly bland and in need of some real good salsa. But the fruit was fresh, sweet and balanced out the burrito quite nicely. I did take a croissant home with me and that was pretty good after a few hours of departure and consumption. The place is nice and very different with their decor. The staff was very friendly and service was above average. I should have been a bit more adventurous with my order and maybe would have been more pleased with the experience. This place is pretty much the epitome of the word 'adorable.' From the kitschy flowered wallpaper and knicknacks to the cute old ladies brunching and having a grand old time in the corner, this place charmed me from the moment I stepped foot inside the door. I found parking pretty easily on a weekday late morning at a meter and was seated right away for a party of 5. As I perused the menu I realized I wanted everything, but I decided to go with the quiche du jour, which was a smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill. YEESSSS! If they're serving this quiche, order it immediately. In fact, order any quiche, because it's the perfect balance of eggy and crusty and it's absolutely divine. We were really excited about talk of free mini pastries but it turns out they only do that on the weekends. So one of the employees very kindly cut up their almond croissant and carrot muffin so we could have a similar experience. I had a nibble of each and they were fantastic. So fresh and not too sweet. Next time if i'm in an indulgent mood I'll be sure to order those pumpkin pancakes I keep hearing so much about! Especially with the hen group. we just came off of a wonderful baby shower weekend extravaganza at the le montrose and they suggested we come here for brunch on a rainy Sunday morning. The place was all things Francois. Down to the service. They will seat you when they want to, don't ask. They will bring your coffee and water when the mood strikes. But we were ok with it mainly because that's how the French are right? I was served a steaming mocha, which was tasty and stuff but $3.50 for about 3 sips. The pastry basket they bring you isn't that fresh, but it's the thought that counts right? For my main dish I chose the filet mignin eggs benni atop croissants. I chose wisely. it was like a whole steak first of all and so well cooked, not a piece of fatty meat anywhere, I was impressed. The eggs were poached perfectly--on the verge of being runny but not, nor overcooked. The croissants got a bit soggy but i really just needed a bit to sop up my heavely poached & filet. My friends breakfast croissant (at only $6) was huge and delish too. The pumpkin pancakes were light and subtle barely needing any syrup. We came here for a birthday brunch on a Friday. We both took the day off to have a special time. She had been here before and said although there usually a wait for the food, it was a nice place. There were 3 of us and a child (who was very well behaved). We mentioned to our server that we were here for a birthday and specifically the Kogolof French Toast for the Birthday Girl. As expected the food did take a while to come out, but not surprised. When we did get our food everyone said they liked their dish. After a couple of bites, the Birthday Girl wondered if she received the correct dish. The French Toast was not made with Kugolof, it look exactly like my regular toast that came with my Salmon Omelet. She also realized that while chewing the French Toast, she had some foreign matter in her mouth - a piece of a plastic bag. I called our server over and said we had 2 items to address: 1) Birthday girl wasn't sure she got the correct French Toast since she ordered the special Kogolof FT. I showed him it looked exactly like my brioche regular toast. - His reply was, "Yes, this is our "Kogolof". I asked him why I had it then since I ordered the brioche toast - "Yes, this is also our brioche". Weird, but ok. BDay Girl still liked it, tomatO, tOmato, you know? 2) We showed him the approximate 1" piece of plastic bag that was in her dish. He look at us and annoyed said, "what do you want me to do about it?" - when all 3 of us were too shocked to answer, he said, "What do you want from me?" Finally I asked Bday Girl if she'd like something different, or another order of the same, or to keep what she had. Shock still she said, I can eat this, it's fine, then our friend finally said, we thought you might like to know. Again annoyed, he said, "Ok, what do you want, another order, taken off the bill, what?" He was so annoyed we stupidly said "we'll let you know". In the end, our friend picked up the tab and didn't let us know until later that our server never took it off the bill, or even discounted it. Sadly, i don't think I will go back to this cute place. Pastries and pasties. One I love, the other I despise. One is the truth, the other is lies. Pastries from La Conversation are four-star worthy, potentially five upon further deliberation. I've had me some almond croissant, red velvet cake, hazelnut tea cake, and strawberry fruit tart at this small French bakery located just north of Santa Monica Blvd. on Doheny, and all of the aforementioned are well worth the three quarters I remit to the parking meter to patron this establishment. The cream cheese icing on the Red Velvet ranks high in my little black book of thigh-fattening delectables, and the tea cake tastes just light enough to convince yourself that it's good for you. The almond croissant is drizzled in chocolate, and is, like anything else that's baked with layer upon layer of butter, quite delicious. The decor of this place is cheesy French, which happens to strike my fancy. The wallpaper is a red and white striped faux curtain, the walls are clad with baroque-esque paintings, and classical music fills the air. Fun atmosphere for enjoying a fruit tart or two. And, if the management and/or owner of La Conversation happens to be reading, one of your employees calls the place "L.A. Conversation" (as in Los Angeles). I drive by this small bakery daily on the morning commute, decided to give it a try. Stopped by for a quick bite and had to wait over 20 mins to give my order (I know this because I texted someone a few minutes after sitting down and receiving my menu) ... btw it was not busy. After waiting patiently, I calmly mentioned to the waiter that I was ready to give my order. I was then met by a steady stream of attitude and disrespect. I thought maybe I was imagining things and being too critical and therefore bit my tongue and placed my order. After the waitress left, the party at the table next me approached me saying they overheard the patient interaction and couldn't believe how rude the server was. Regarding the food, it was average. Nothing special. Bread was hard.. a few hours away from being stale. Flavor was underwhelming. Prices were excessive. I don't leave reviews often but for someone in the service industry to treat a customer like that is dumbfounding.. especially considering it was unprovoked. I don't know what the big deal is with this place. I've heard so much about their breakfasts and their chocolate croissants but I've been there twice and neither time wowed me. First of all, parking on the weekends is a bitch. Second, the chocolate croissant is too heavy. It was just super sweet and sort of flat/soggy. Wasn't impressive. Finally, I had the eggs, herb potatoes, baguette breakfast and the potatoes were way too dry and tough. The eggs didn't have much of an "egg" taste to it. Shouldn't farm fresh eggs have that rich egg yolk taste? The baguette was okay (Amadine has way better baguettes). I do like the little complimentary pastry basket they give you but I don't like it enough to go back a third time. P.S. Picture a French cafe situated in the midst of both high-end business and the pulse of West Hollywood - cue La Conversation. La Conversation is a cafe that is so dear to me, I even wrote a short film about it (really). This is a cafe I was taken to almost 20 years ago for a cappuccino and my first "real" film meeting with a Director. I still, to this day, remember how good that cappuccino was. Before I go any further, allow me to take you into this bakery that transports you into a dream-like world of stainless steel coffeemakers from days of ole, miniature furniture placed strategically along the walls, wallpaper that seems as if the nostalgia of the Parisian streets have found a home, and the piece de la resistance - the pastries and desserts. The smell of fresh eclairs penetrates your nose, enticing it with childlike sweetness. This however doesn't even hold a candle to the menu itself. A menu that has only gotten better with time. A menu frolicking in fresh ingredients and uncompromising in taste and simplicity. So upon parking in the tiny and quaint (and often packed) parking lot behind the restaurant, just off of Doheny, you enter from the street side. Tables and chairs adorn the street as well as a full restaurant inside the painted red and blue doors. Once seated, I encourage you to look around. Every little detail was well thought out by Founders Steven Carson and Michael Carmona who began their journey in Philadelphia after having had studied in Paris and the success of "Conversation" and "Carmona's Birthday" (Bakeries in Philadelphia and Los Feliz). La Conversation is precisely as it suggests: A quaint little stop that will transcend you to the cafe's in Europe with fare that is both invigorating and satisfying. And, as it were, I have had some of the most relevant conversations of my life there - as have many others, including celebrities. This Cafe is unlike any other and it is apparent from start to finish. I would highly recommend venturing in for any meal: breakfast and lunch (or an early dinner). Breakfast: Their fresh fruit and oatmeal is beyond good (which seems basic but trust me, this is worth it), as are the egg white scramble with fresh vegetables, pumpkin (yes, pumpkin) pancakes, Egg Florentine, basket of fresh pastries (brought out at the start of the meal), and pretty much everything on the menu.
