Great Cuban food with a nice ambiance (despite the strip mall setting)...I had a lovely meal here with my wife. We started with a Papa Rellena and Croqueta. They were delicious. We tried the Vaca Frita and Lechon Asado. While both lacked salt, this was easily solved. Both were excellent. The Frijoles Negros were also flavorful. The best was perhaps their Flan de Calabaza. Personally, I've never found the food here to be anything special. However, I brought my husband here for Father's Day as he's been a customer for years. I will not be coming back. It wasn't as busy as you would expect for Father's Day, and they had 2-3 waitresses on the floor. We were directed outside, where we waited at our table for 15 mins before I had to ask for menus. Throughout our meal, I barely saw any of the two waitresses that were helping my table. They were polite enough. I don't want to comment on the food too much as that is subjective. Like I said, my husband loves the food. However, I will say that I was served potatoes that were still raw. The best part of my meal was the flan I ordered at the end of our meal. When the check came, I noticed I was charged for 2 orders of my dessert. I pointed out the mistake to the cashier, who rudely answered that she "personally delivered the FIRST flan" before my meal even began. I found the mistake comical, and simple enough to explain: She was confusing me with another table. I politely explained this to her, and she called over the 2nd waitress who helped my table. The 2nd waitress wasn't any help. She dismissed the situation saying she told the other waitress 2 flans. I assumed that was where the misunderstanding had occurred so I asked the 2nd waitress to verify that she placed an order for two, but delivered one. At this, the 2nd waitress waves her hand and says "I did whatever you told me to do" and walked away. I turn to the 1st waitress and say, "I am not paying for a dessert I didn't order, or eat." She keeps repeating that she personally delivered the first piece before my meal began. I tried to explain that I 1) wouldn't order dessert before my meal and then AGAIN afterwards, and 2) I wasn't trying to stiff her for $5 dollars when my bill was $60 and 3) I would remember PERSONALLY eating the flan!!! She asked me to speak to my husband about it. I was shocked by the entire situation, her attitude towards me. This entire scene was happening in front of all the other patrons eating their meals. I called my husband over, and asked him how many desserts were brought to the table. He confirmed my answer. At this point, she conceded the argument. It took all 3 waitresses to remove the additional dessert from my order. I will not be going back to this restaurant. Not because the food is bad, or the service is slow, not even for the mistake on my bill. No, those things are true but they aren't the reason why...I simply think it is appalling that a waitress will make a scene in front of her customers that implies I am trying to avoid paying. I left a tip: $5 dollars (the price of the flan) because she obviously needs it more than I do. read more

I like La Cubana I really do. I've gone to both of their old locations in Glendale and have always been a fan of their food. However, this location is lacking a few things that I deem somewhat important when spending a dime to dine out. First off, La Cubana is located in a small strip mall with extremely limited parking. Since the parking is limited you are left to park on the street which can be a bit discouraging since it is located on busy Glendale Blvd. The restaurant itself is rather small especially if you're comparing it to their previous locations. The restaurant has about six tables. They seem to mix and match the tables depending on the party size. We came with a party of six and fit comfortably in the corner. However, if you're planning on taking a bigger party you might want to call them to see if they can accommodate you. Likewise, it might be wise to make a reservation regardless. The whole time we were there people were going in and out inquiring about the wait time which says something about the food. The food is rather good all around. My parents are big fans of the oxtail and haven't been able to find anything quite like La Cubana's. My sisters both enjoy the breaded steak because of its light and crisp breading. I personally, go for the sandwiches because I like their Cuban bread. We typically get some plantains and onion with avocado salad on the side to share around the table which is always a huge hit. I would have probably given La Cubana 4-stars if it wasn't for the service. The place is small and with 2 servers I understand if they were falling behind here and there but the lack of consistency really put a damper on our experience. First off our sides (beans, rice, french fries, and moros) all came out at different times; some came out well before the entrees were served while others came out notably after the entrees were served. Similarly, the entrees all came out at different times. I personally don't mind when entrees come out at different times because I get it, it happens but the entrees had a huge gap in serving time. Lastly, we weren't served the complimentary bread until we asked numerous times, we weren't given ketchup until a good while into our main course even though we asked the two servers numerous times. I promise you, I am not exaggerating. Bread and ketchup are a big thing in my family and we don't mess with such things. Overall Good food, bad location, friendly but inconsistent service. I was really craving Cuban food so I decided to try this place, bad idea. It was bad right from the start our waitress was not friendly at all. She had an attitude while taking our order and when my friend asked for something on the menu she said they didn't have it. That's fine but what bothered me was that about 10 minutes later another party next to us asked for the same thing she said yes sure. I asked for a Cuban sandwich when I got it it had mayo instead of mustard. Cuban sandwiches are suppose to have mustard. My boyfriend asked for water when he first got there he didn't get it until he was done with his food he also asked for extra bread and again didn't get it until he was done eating. Back to the waitress, she was just horrible not friendly at all. I felt like taking the family out for dinner (una ves al año), since I was jonesing for some Cuban food like I used have when I was a kid growing up in L.A. (Rampart). I didn't want to deal with El Cochinito parking lot situation, word on the street is that El Colmao is not as good as it used to be, El Rincon Criollo esta en casa de carajo from Pasadena, and the only Cuban left at Versailles is me when I show up (full disclosure: I am half Cuban and Mexican, so the black vs. pinto beans is a daily struggle for me), so I decided on La Cubana based on the current Yelp reviews. The place is small so our party of 4 (2 adults and 2 children) waited for about 10 minutes to be seated. The young lady at the front was nice enough to give us some buttered bread, which our gluten deprived children devoured like piranhas. After reviewing the menu, we decided on the following: Croquettas: Warm, flavorful, and creamy. If you think Porto's makes the best croquettes in town you are sadly mistaken. 5 Stars Papas Rellenas: Warm and fresh out the pan. 5 Stars Media Noche: Wanted a Cuban sandwich but they ran out of the bread, so I went with the alternative. I can't remember the last time I had one as good as this... the bread was perfectly warmed and not greasy. The roast pork, salty ham, sour dill pickles, tangy yellow mustard and sharp Swiss cheese all came together like a symphony at Disney Hall. 5 Stars Bistec Empanizado came with white rice and black beans on the side: It bit to gamey compared to the organic, free range, no conflict, fair trade, and grass only feed imported beef the family is used to, so I suggest you pass on it unless you want to taste bistec like abuela used to make in the same skillet as the liver back in the 70's. 3 Stars Ropa Vieja came with white rice and black beans on the side: Hands down the best I have had in a decade or so in L.A. The flavors are as authentic Cuban as you can get west of the Mississippi by far. Most other restaurants try to fancy up the ropa vieja with a bunch of non-traditional herbs and spices... pa que? If you get only one thing this is the dish I recommend. 5 Stars I have read some of the reviews complain about the service, which has room for improvement. It is not so bad that I would hold it against them since the food more than makes up for it. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, so over time I am sure it will improve to most folks' satisfaction. I will definitely be stopping by again in the near future. I have been dining at La Cubana since they used to be on Colorado. I'm cuban and honestly the food is the most authentic and delicious cuban food there is in Southern California. My personal favorites are the Rabo Encendido (Oxtail), Palomilla a la plancha (Grilled steak), Lechon (Roasted Pork), Pan con Bistec (Steak sandwich) are all delicious. Awesome. I went here several years ago when they were at their original location before they closed. This was a long time ago when I still had a Nokia phone and Yelp and the internet was not quite a thing that anyone could afford. The space is small but the food is delicious, the servers are amazing, and I cannot wait to come back. This is by far the best Cuban food I have had in the area. Granted, I am not Cuban and therefore I cannot speak to authenticity, but I can't say as someone who loves food and as someone who is eaten at several Cuban restaurants, that this is far better than any other type of Cuban food I have ever had. After a 12 month hiatus the sleeping giant returns for dinner. Folks in Glendale are just happy for the sighting and romantically fantasizing on a couple of past loves, such as: the Fricase De Pollo (stunning) or the ever so sexy Pollo Frito (soo good you can eat the bones), you also have the Pan con Mantequilla and Chicharritas de Platinos verdes as a starting point. I love this place. used to have a larger spot on Maryland and reopend in a smaller location. This has been a favorite of my eife's family for years. We have bene all over to close to every Cuban restaurant in the greater Los Angeles Area. I dont feela nyone comes close to this place. The palomilla is perfectly cooked and explodes with flavor. Garnished with mild white onions and a lemon. The empanada's filled with seasoned cuban style beef (picadillo) are delicious and have a sweet taste to them. I hate to do this but it's the second time i get sick from eating here. Sadly, it's the most authentic Cuban place around as far as the food execution but i knew there was something off with the flavor of the meat and ham. The ham in the croquetas was almost bitter which means it's not fresh and the steak had an off taste as well. I went back and got sick again after eating pork. I'm very disappointed and wish i had a better review being that I'm Cuban and support small businesses but ethically I have to say the truth, I know the food is not fresh. As far as the rice and beans, they're safe but full of seasoning packets and not fresh ingredients which is disappointing for a Cuban cook- the owner that looked very stressed. The service was fine i don't expect ppl to kiss my ass for a $15 meal I'm sure they could be friendlier but what I care about is good food & quality, which was not up to par.
