Out the variety of pastries I picked up (morning buns, brioche, even mini cupcakes, etc.), unexpectedly, my favorite was the kalama olive bread. And it was literally an afterthought add on item. We didn't even bother to heat it up, just sliced and enjoyed as is (some of us spread some salted kerrygold butter on top), but it was absolutely delicious and a hit! Honestly, not sure why this place is still highly rated. I surmise it's only because of "name recognition," and the history of La Farine being a great bakery at a point in time in the past. That doesn't mean it still is today. Life, people, and situations change over time; most things don't stay the same. The quality of La Farine is on par with Safeway, sad to say. The Swiss Twinkie was incredibly dry, to the point when I tried to tear it in half, it instead shattered into a bunch of dry pieces. Needless to say, I didn't eat it. I think it's several days old, given how dry it is. The slice of the Le Sicilien cake was just okay, average at best, and again, I could get a comparable cake at a grocery store. I ate a few bites, the pistachio flavor was pronounced and okay, and then I threw the rest in the trash, which speaks volumes. Cake is one of my favorite desserts to eat, and I always finish, unless it's so bad or I'm thoroughly unimpressed that I can't justify putting the sugar and excess calories into my body. This is what happened with this cake, unfortunately -- I truly wanted to like it. If you want high quality cakes -- do try Crixa Cakes if you haven't already and you like cake (they also have other delicious desserts). Their cakes are perfection, never dry, and just the perfect amount of sweetness so as to not overpower the flavors of the cake. The curried egg croissant with arugula tasted okay going down, but gave me a stomach ache for some reason. Again, it was just okay, very average, and I could get a similar sandwich at a grocery store or even 7/11. Nothing spectacular, and I wouldn't go out of my way for this at all, especially after feeling ill. The croissant was still dry, but not as dry as the Swiss Twinkie. The taste of the croissant was bland and boring, and I've had a much tastier and buttery croissant from Costco. Again, this is really sad, given this is a bakery that's supposed to specialize in making these baked goods, as opposed to a corporate store who we already realize is not giving us the highest quality they can give. From reading other reviews, it seems they also get very dry cookies, cupcakes, cake, and other baked goods from here, which tells me La Farine's baked goods are not at all fresh, and they resell old goods. This wouldn't ordinarily be a problem, if they marked them as such and decreased the price, but they don't. They instead charge you full price, for what you believe is going to be a freshly baked good. This bakery was probably good when the first one opened, and the original owners still owned it, but as tends to occur with small businesses upon selling their business and opening more locations -- the quality immediately goes down, cost-cutting measures take effect, the workers aren't compensated fairly for their time and labor, and it's at this point that customers should speak with their dollars, and stop supporting businesses like these. We would have a much larger quantity of quality businesses if we did this! If the businesses don't want to end up closing -- they need to change their practices, as we keep them in business. For all of the reasons I listed above, I will never support La Farine again. If you want actually delicious, buttery, flaky, high quality croissants and a select few other pastries -- go to Pâtisserie Rotha. I get a dopamine rush just thinking of that place. La Noisette Sweets also looks promising and of high quality, and that's next on my list to try, so you could give that bakery a chance too. read more

Despite many of the recent negative reviews, I really liked this spot! I came on a Saturday around noon, and was surprised to see that there was no wait at all. The inside is really cute and they display all their breads and pastries so you can easily see which ones you want. I decided to get the savory morning bun, which had bacon, ham, and cheese inside! The dough was definitely my favorite part though, as it was super soft snd buttery. It was quite expensive, though, at $5 for the single item. I'll have to come back and try more of their items to get a more comprehensive review, but I really recommend trying the savory morning bun! read more

We always come here for the fruit tarts -- they're incredibly fresh and delicious, and have become a favorite in our family. On a recent visit, a baker was carrying a tart to the display case when my son (who has autism and can be very impulsive) reached out and tried to grab it. I had some time to kill before my cryotherapy appointment down the street, so I figured I might as well pick up some Mother's Day treats while I wait. Everything looked delicious and the line outside kinda told me it was a popular place. So instead of choosing a big ass fruit tart, I instead chose a variety of dessert so I could pick from it as well. I went with two different kinds of mini fruit tarts, a lemon cheesecake and a fudge mini pie. I needed to add some bread so I went with a sour batard. The bread was super soft and perfectly sour. I wished my mother-in-law had grassfed butter to accompany the bread; instead she had margarine, which I won't touch with a ten foot pole, so I ate the slice of perfection naked, and it was still so yummy! Whenever I google best fruit tart, this place always pop up. I live in SF and was too lazy to figure out how to venture here to pick up a tart....but after all these years, I made the drive over just to pick one up. It is was one of the most affordable fruit tarts I've ever purchased (under $30). They are prepared with the right balance of fruit, crust, and custard. The fruit is thinly cut without any sugar glaze. The custard was not too heavy. Lastly, the crust was perfect....butter and flaky the way I like it. I've had Noe Valley bakery fruit tart, but bugs seem to always crawl out their tart. Mollie Stones prepares their tart with a premade non flaky tart crust. My son and I gobbled up the tart in 3 days that my poor husband missed out. I will be back to get another one for my own birthday. read more

The fruits on top are always fresh and sweet. The crust is flaky and light, which balances perfectly with the tart. I can eat half a tart in one sitting! Also tried the Le Sicilien, this cake is moist and chocolatey, with a very small hint of liquor. It has pistachio crumbs on the edges so it gives a nice texture. The fresh berries and cream was just okay. The cake was really dense and with just one layer of fruits, it tasted more like a semi sweet sponge cake with cream. I heard about La Farine several years back when my co-teacher started bringing giant boxes of La Farine goodies into the break room/office (but always saved me my own morning bun, savory morning bun, and chocolate croissant). I'm fairly certain she brought them from the Piedmont location, but we went to the College Ave. location this morning -- right at the split of Oakland and Berkeley. The line was short and moved quickly (there's always a line!). The bakery smelled so good. My husband got a loaf of the sour batard, a savory bun, and a chocolate eclair. I got a mini red velvet cupcake for myself. We came home and so far my husband's had the savory bun and loves it as much I do. The chocolate croissant (which I didn't get this time) is best when melted a little bit. Everything was fairly affordable -- $13 before tip! We will definitely be back! read more

I've been coming to La Farine since around 2018 because their fruit tartes are literally the best! Over the years, I have tried other pastries like their blueberry coffee cake, croissant, and morning bun. I have gifted items like chocolate cheesecakes and other pastries to friends, but no matter what, I always come back just for their fruit tarte. The single one is around $5 and the whole fruit tarte is $25. I think their other pastries are mediocre, but their fruit tarte will be my favorite for a long time. Even my family who can be picky about sweets love their fresh fruit tarte so I always find myself bringing back one whenever I am heading home from Berkeley. Before COVID, I would be able to reserve a fruit tarte in advance by calling to ensure I have a fresh one but right now they are only taking walk in orders. What can I say about la farine that hasn't already been said, it's a really great tasting bakery with local roots in the east bay. I usually get the chocolatine or the mini cupcakes whenever I'm in the area, but you can't go wrong with any of the pastries here. They're all really tasty without that intense sugar injection you'll find at other places, especially at larger chains or big grocery store bakeries. Every year I also pick up one of their fruit tart cakes for my spouse who absolutely loves them! They're not too expensive and make for a nice light desert to celebrate a big day. You should call ahead to reserve one just in case because they've been known to sell out before the end of the day on occasion. One thing to note is there's no seating or bathrooms at this location so you'll have to take things to go to enjoy somewhere else! This wasn't a problem for us though since we were making a trip to the Oakland zoo and planning to earn our treats there later in the day :) read more

Walk in (or just walk bay), take a deep breath, and you're transported to a cafe off a cobble stoned street in France Okay, dreamy and dramatic perhaps - but this place IS incredibly charming and cozy. Beautiful inside, attractive branding, delicious breads. I walk down and grab loaves of fresh sourdough on the weekends & slice it up at home. They have a diverse selection of breads, cakes, and pastries that are piled high, displayed behind the counter. They also have simple brewed coffee in carafes behind the counter (no espresso, though that would take it to a whole new level) and a basic selection of (cold) milks and sugars. There are several coffee shops within a few steps though, if that's not gonna do it for you. The employees have always been warm, welcoming, and helpful. Today my dad and I went, grabbing just a small, single-serving raisin and walnut loaf to go with our Philz coffee... it was delicious - the dough was tangy with the perfect sweetness from the fruit and texture from the nuts. He was visiting town and fell in love with the spot. Grateful to have this gem in the Elmwood community. What a gift to have fresh bread within walking distance??
