La Flor is the quintessential mom-and-pop with authentic food, right on the Woodside/Sunnyside border. A resident of the neighborhood for a year, it is our go-to for a quiet meal around the 'hood, or comfort take-out on a lazy evening. On weekends they usually have beautiful music played by cheerful and talented strings - romantic! Last time I went I was LA-FLOORED - I forgot cash (they are cash only), and the sweet lady told me "Come back tomorrow to pay. The food is ready now." She didn't take my name, or credit card, or firstborn... she just wanted me to have our nice meal. (And of course, we paid the next day.) They are so sweet there!! read more

It's a dark gem hidden below and next to the #7 and among the industrial grit that makes Woodside, but the light dishes have pleased me on both occassions because La Flor has no intention of making you feel guilty about fullness - the size of the dishes are enough to make you feel fed for three hours before you munch on your next treat. Ate a delicious brunch at La Flor today. Two friends and I got there at 11 (on a Sunday) and were seated right away at the last free table by a very friendly waitress who provided excellent service throughout (and she was BUSY.) We ordered a lot of food, and it was all very tasty: we split the pastry basket and a grilled fig and blue cheese special. A friend and I both ordered the smoked salmon and brie omelette, the other ordered huevos rancheros. All three of us loved the food and the relaxed, friendly vibe. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE! I went here because I wanted to have their bourbon vanilla french toast because it had gotten a recommendation from the Daily news. When I went in I was left to sit with the menu and then ignored. I had to beckon a waitress, who seemed annoyed. I gave her my order and waited and waited and waited. I saw individuals that had come in after me getting their food and finally after more than 30 minutes asked another waitress why it was taking so long. It turned out that my waitress had never put my order in. The service here is horrendous, unless you seem to know the waitresses, as my waitress was very nice to people who she seemed to know. This is true from appetizers to desserts, brunch to dinner. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the place is cozy. One of my highest recommendations for a place to eat in the Sunnyside / Woodside area. The food is delicious, inventive, and consistent. I have been there perhaps 20 times over the past few years and I have never been disappointed. The first review said that this place is child friendly. I don't agree. It is small and quiet and jammed with tables and seats. Maybe if your kid is quiet and not active, otherwise you are imposing on everyone else. The staff though is friendly and welcoming to everyone. Unusually prompt for a Mexican place. It is really a fine restaurant on a Mexican theme. The place is more crowded every time I go in so I suspect it will be Moving soon. The grungy street view is actually kind of nice, It's a gentile kind of grunge. The neighborhood is now more Manhattan escapees, more reminiscent of early Brooklyn Heights than deepest Roosevelt Avenue. read more

La Flor is a fusion of French and Latin cuisine, they are super creative when it comes to their menu. It's a sweet nostalgic memory of Paris since I returned from a euro trip last month. I came here with my husband and BFF for a Sat brunch last week. I had their Bourbon Vanilla French Toast with fresh fruit and organic maple syrup. My BFF had their Irish Breakfast- 2 eggs, sausage patties, and home fries. My husband had the Huevos Rancheros- soft tortilla, salsa, refrito beans, and two eggs sunnyside up. The toast was excellent. It had the right fluffiness and amount of syrup without over drenching the toast. The Huevos Rancheros was pretty good too (except I stayed away from the uncooked eggs), it's filling but without the overstuffed feeling. We also had their mimosas and coffee. Waitresses are superb and top notch from taking customer's orders to getting seated right away. I'm sure their entrees/lunch is just as amazing. I'll def save this spot when I'm in the area to try their other items! read more

Almost everything is great here--food (tacos, soups, all salads, mac 'n cheese, brunch, dessert, and everything else I've eaten), service (every single employee is awesome), and atmosphere. My only complaint, and it's a big one (and the reason I took one star away), is the awful live music they have here. I love the idea of live music and supporting local musicians. In practice, however, the space is way too small for live music and the duos they have are just not that talented, in my opinion. I feel horrible saying that as I really want to like these musicians, but it really takes away from the experience of dining there. Last time I was there it was pretty empty and my friend and I had to shout over loud, off-key vocals and even louder xylophone (I think?) playing. I had raved about how good it was to my friend and when we arrived I was actually embarrassed to have suggested the place, that's how annoying the music was. We couldn't believe how bad it was--it was almost funny. I've heard other duos there (horn-guitar) that were at least decent, but it's still just too loud for the space. As much as I love La Flor, I now find myself only wanting to go there at a time when I won't be subjected to their musical torture. read more

I have been there few times for take out dessert and seen the waitress drinking wine out of the bottle that serves the customer. So the other day we wanted to dine. The restaurant was pretty empty and waitress was seating next us somewhere we didn't want to. When we asked the lady to seat as our preferred table she said no. Mind you this is the lady who we saw drinking out of the bottle before. The way she refused us we felt very Unwelcomed. When we told her that no one is there why can't we seat there? She just said no and put the menues away knowing that we won't dine there. We walked out and realized that she could have been drunk. LoL anyway there are lot more restaurants out there!!! Stopped for lunch on an early Wednesday afternoon. The restaurant was quiet, comfortable and colorful. The menus are handwritten, which is a nice touch. We ordered the Crab Cake w/ corn salad and chipotle aioli, Flautas de Pollo, Shrimp Chalupa and a Mozzarella & Heirloom Tomato Salad (Special). The crab cake was smaller than I expected, but tasty nonetheless. It had a nice pan fried outer crust. The corn salad underneath was good, the corn was so sweet. The flautas were nice and crispy, perhaps a bit over fried. The greens and tomatoes served with them were fresh and tasty. The shrimp on the Chalupa dish were overcooked and slightly tough. The avocado sauce had a perfectly balanced spicy kick to it. My favorite was the Mozz & Tomato Salad. The cheese tasted fresh, as did the mixture of greens. The tomatoes were a nice texture, not too soft, not too firm. Presentation was beautiful, piled in the middle of the plate. There was a woman who worked at the restaurant that was so nice, she brought us a complimentary slice of cake. I would definitely dine here again, can't wait to try some of the other items! read more

I find that I keep returning to La Flor because it happens to be one of the few places near Jackson Heights that offers nice salads with homemade dressings not consisting of the dreaded iceberg lettuce. But La Flor is much more than that. It has menu items that appeal to most tastes. Try it for the breakfast options. Its Black Forest Ham and Brie omelet is fluffy. light and amazing and is served up with some creative home fries with veggies such as grilled zucchini. You'll also find a couple of slices of brioche on your plate, and given the time of year you stop by, you may also be served a nice wedge of melon to cleanse your palate. Their blueberry pancakes are accompanied by warm organic maple syrup...ask for it to be served on the side. The homemade granola is filling and a great choice on cold winter mornings. Go at dinner time and try their burgers, pastas or fish options. All are good and expertly and appealingly plated. Individual pizzas are also recommended, and don't forget to try the bread pudding. It's decadent! Good food, fair prices and live entertainment on occasion by local musicians. Meter parking is readily available and the 7 train runs right above along Roosevelt. My husband and I had brunch today with our five-year-old. We truly enjoyed the place and the food (great prices!) but we were a little surprise and disappointed with the pancakes that our daughter had. The serving was quite small (two pancakes cut into quarters), almost not enough for such a young child. And the price? Funny but it was the most expensive item. The dishes that my husband and I had cost less than $6 each, and hers was $8. Anyway, I recommend it, but don't order pancakes if you are trying to kill your appetite. read more

This is the best restaurant in this area of Queens. The food is always delicious and the staff is warm and attentive. We have used them for catering (food for 50) as well as family dinners in the restaurant (8-10 people). Last week, I had the blackened tilapia and a shrimp avocado salad. My husband had the ribs - he said they were the best he ever had. We've also had the salmon, the tacos, Lamb chops. The kids live for the Mac and cheese. The food is reliably consistent. Almost everything we had was terrific. The Tinga salad was so good it's something I'll order again and again as was the mango jicama salad which I think was a special. The crab cakes were also tasty. For entrees, my companion had the lamb shank which was so succulent. My steak quesadillas while visually gratifying, was a little too bland for me. I just wish one of those colorful sauces that was used to decorate it brought more flavor, spice, anything to give the dish some dimension. For dessert, we were going to just split the tiramisu but they also brought over a slice of the tres leches cake. Both were delicious but had to take most of it home since we were so full. read more

After asking for more bread to fill up on during our very long wait I was informed it would cost me $.50 PER PIECE of bread. I passed and instead held out for my overpriced unauthentic Mexican food. You know you are in the wrong place when everyone speaks American English without an accent! Maybe this place would pass for real food if it were in Manhattan but in Queens you can get much more authentic food for half the price and zero attitude. Do not eat here. read more
