Ive been eating here since they opened up im my neighborhood 20 years ago, and this place does not disappoint! The food is always amazing and satisfying. Chef Viko's passion for cooking hasnt decreased at all, and even with all the silly Covid restrictions, he continues to put 100% into every meal he cooks. Came here last night for dinner with some friends and had the osso bucco special. The pork shank was tender, juicy, and so flavorful. Came with a mushroom risotto which was just as delicious. My wife got the bbq ribs which were tender and filling. Try the mango, jicama, cucumber salad! Soooo good. I forgot to ask what was in the dressing, but it had a slight middle eaatern flavor to it. My guess is tahini, but i have no clue. I just know that the food was fantastic and Woodside is fortunate to have this place continue to feed us. read more

Cute in Queens only gets you so far in my book. I've been to Flor a number of times. Because its a bakery, anything with dough is good (pizza, cookies, etc). I had a swordfish, one of their specials that was good last night. HOWEVER, It is one of those places that I WANT to like so much. Local place, cute, decent food...but the service... I apparently am in the minority, but I have consistently had mediocre to bad service. The waitresses ALWAYS have an edge to them, are never really helpful and anything you ask for is treated as a bother. And when I see that I am the kind of person that tries to be extra nice...multiple thank you's, joking, "do you need to sit down, I got this." (no I didn't say that) But in the end I am a service first type of person...so if you don't get annoyed by waitresses ignoring you, being surly, having no personality and seeming like they prefer to do anything but take your order then lets here it for La Flor! La Flor cafe seemed promising but I was a little disappointed. I went for brunch on a weekend, was first really surprised to see that they stop serving brunch at 2pm: is the NYc or what? I got there at just around 2pm, but thankfully our waitress was nice enough to agree to serve us brunch nonetheless. The food is vaguely Mexican, although they have standard American items as well. I ended going to the French toast, which came with fresh fruit and maple syrup: it was good but not out of this world (maybe I just need to stop ordering French toast... it seems like more often than not I end up disappointed). My orange juice tasted like Minute Maid, and my cup of coffee arrived after I was done with my food. I must say, though, that their cakes (cheesecakes in particular) looked pretty good. I might give it another chance for dinner someday, but I'm not sure if I'll be back for brunch. read more

This place has its off days, but on its on days it's pretty damn good. I am never sure how to describe this place when telling people about it - I usually go with 'Euro-Mexican Fusion' or something like that but it's more idiosyncratic, and better, than that would imply. The atmosphere is a bit more, uh, atmospheric than you expect in Woodside, but not in a pretentious way - the decor and general vibe is friendly and lively. The quesadillas are not what you expect when you hear 'quesadilla', but they are great - a sandwich made with two fresh corn tortillas, and the filling of choice, Oaxaca cheese, and mashed potatos (!) in the middle. I usually end up getting the vegetable one of these. Basically anything involving bread or tortillas is a pretty good option - these people know their breads. The salads are also very nice - up to manhattan yuppie-food standards and cheaper, a rarity in this neighborhood. This is also one of the better spots in the vicinity for brunch. I've had some issues with erratic and slow service, and occasionally had a dish arrived cooked oddly (a pizza, yes they have pizza too, had a strangely burned crust). But I still like this place a lot. Maybe not worth the trek from Manhattan to eat at (we have Sripraphai for that), but a great thing to have in the neighborhood. read more

La Flor is a great find. On a pretty dingy block under the 7 train, it is a quaint and friendly place for lunch, dinner and especially breakfast. It's some kind of Mexican fusion restaraunt/bakery. The Mexican part is obvious, tacos, tortas quesedillas...but these are usually somewhat fancied up, for instance the Shrimp Quesedilla is amazing, a huge mound of tortilla, shrimp, potatoes, cheese, different salsas and god knows what else. But they also have all kinds of sandwhiches, wraps, pizza, salads etc. I haven't tried that much but I assume it's all good! For breakfast, I like the Puebla, which is eggs scrambled with sausage, potato and some peppers with tortilla chips. Ask for the salsa so it's not too dry, it's a nice starchy, hearty breakfast. The tortas are unique and great as well, the "La Flor" is a bbq pork sandwhich that I'd recommend. Deserts are recommended as well, chocolate bread heated up in the oven is amazing. And the hot chocolate, which they describe as a mix between mexican hot chocolate and the standard, was great. UPDATE: While having countless lunches and brunches there, I'd only been for dinner once before, on valentines day. Went back tonight (a friday) for the second time. I had the BBQ Ribs. It was the best thing I've ever eaten. Spicy mexican coleslaw sitting on top a huge mound of ribs coated in chipolte bbq sauce sitting on top mashed potatoes. My favorite things to order. I order the appetizer of chicken flautas. I often order two, and that is my meal. Three perfect flautas with different sauces and cheese, on a bed of lettuce and tomato. Perfect. The Mexican hot chocolate. I often get two. Just do it. Nothing needed. No extra sugar. Just slurp it up. The tres leches cake. Made from scratch. I told my boyfriend to get his own. MINE! A pleasant surprise. My boyfriend ordered the ribeye, which is often on the specials list. I normally do not go for steak in restaurants like this because I have been disappointed. Oh snap! I will now find it difficult to go there ever again and not order a steak. Not like the steaks in a New York steakhouse. But, it is a fantastic meal! Good, good, good. I've always passed this little place in Woodside finally deciding to go for breakfast and finding out it's an amazing breakfast and brunch spot. We ordered the steak and eggs, blueberry pancakes, and smoked salmon omelette. We were blown away on how delicious everything was. So authentic and filled with tradition. Food: The omelette was creamy and the salmon wasn't overly salty. The hash browns were cooked with zucchini and all of the flavors blended together amazingly. My mouth was watering throughout the meal. The salsassssss (as described in the menu) for the eggs were not too spicy and the Spanish flavors came out of this not so classic steak and eggs. And for last, the best blueberry pancakes I have ever eaten. It was fresh and beautifully presented. With two pancakes cut for you and a side of real blueberry maple syrup, the blend was rich and and warming to the palate. Service: This restaurant is cash only. Had to stop by ATM after bill but honestly the food was so great we didn't mind. However, the service was a bit slow. We got there earlier before the rush started and service was fine. The waitress was very very nice. It just seemed a bit understaffed for the rush of people that followed after us. This however does not make me lower my review for the restaurant, because the food was truly amazing and the experience was very positive. A must try. Will definitely come back. read more

We had brunch here recently and were completely charmed by this place. The interior is really homey, the service is friendly, and the baked goods are truly delicious (try the chocolate brioche). The coffee is also quite good. We both felt that our brunch entrees were trying a little too hard to be cool. I got huevos rancheros, which had all the right elements, but in a fancy presentation that didn't feel as earthy (or as filling) as one thinks a dish by this name would be. My bf got pancakes with a blueberry reduction. They were pretty good, but drenched in the sauce -- to sweet for his tastes. The food was by no means bad, just slightly over-conceived. We'll definitely be back to try dinner sometime and to poke around the brunch menu some more to see if there are any dishes for us. The space, staff, and baked goods are all definitely 4 star, but for now the food itself is about 3. read more

Update: With this update, I took one star off for the poor service, but still kept the high rating from my 4/9 visit because of the food. So I came here again with some friends for my b-day on Sun 4/27. I made reservations, even though the staff said it wasn't necessary (I was expecting 14 guests). I didn't like the service at all...no one came to ask if we wanted to order appetizers, to order entrees, and very rarely did they come to check on us. Also, I wasn't crazy about the fact that they had guacamole but no chips! We went across the street to the deli to get a bag of Tostitos. I understand that service might have been lacking because they might not have been prepared for so many of us (even though I let them know 2 days in advance). All that being said, I will still come back here because the food is just that good. My reservations for 6:30 PM turned into a four-hour dinner because my friends were late, and so none of us actually ordered any food (appetizers or otherwise until 7:30 PM, at the earliest). The guitarist playing that night was very good, and I will go back and tip him, because we were too wrapped up in our festivities then. Few of my friends ordered the same dishes and desserts, so I got to sample quite a few. Here are the round-ups: Apps: Yummy- salmon tartare; crab cake. So-so: Taco (reminded me of egg rolls; hard instead of crispy) Entrees: Yummy- Steak quesadilla, BBQ pork ribs (spicy!), Mexican pizza So-so: Grilled veggie pizza (not as good this time); pizza with salad, beans and anchovies (very weird) Desserts: Yummy!- Cheesecake, chocolate cake, tres leches cake, chocolate souffl (much better that night), So-so: Flan (too bitter), raisin bread (it was a substitute that night; too sweet) The staff even threw in 2 free desserts. So, for about 6 appetizers, 14 entrees, and 6 desserts, it came out to about $27/person after tax and tip. read more

I'm obviously in the minority here but calling this place amazing would be a slight exaggeration. I finally managed to come here after many passes- either I wasn't hungry or too hesitant to venture in. I'm glad I made it this time around. Service is lacking but on a busy Palm Sunday, what would you expect. The interior decor is a little too dark and seemed almost unsanitary at times. Located at the Woodside/Sunnyside border, it's a quaint hole in the wall with a delicious menu. The Egg white and Spinach omellete had the perfect balance. Slow, often aloof service is on par with the good but unfulfilling desserts at this pleasant-looking cafe. My friend went with the Kahlua tiramisu which didn't taste particularly boozy but had good coffee flavor. My banana bread pudding came doused in a think vanilla sauce and had the appearance of french toast, throwing off my expectations and leaving me craving real bread pudding. The fruit salad that accompanies every dessert is a mirepoix of everything from canteloupe to apple. However, it's so...dicey that it becomes next to impossible to pick up with the forks provided, and can even clash with the flavors of the dessert itself. Best f'ing salad I've ever had! During a recent visit to see my brother and sis-in-law, I was in need of a light meal before flying back to the West Coast. My S-I-L was certain that La Flor would be the right choice for my needs. And damn was she right. La Flor has a very quiet and unassuming atmosphere. At first glance I wasn't impressed, and assumed that I'd be disappointed. But after taking one taste of the Garbanzo & Spinach Salad, all of my assumptions were thrown out the window. It was a glorious concoction of chick peas, cooked spinach leaves, garlic, and lemon vinaigrette. Every ingredient was well matched, and fresh. According to my S-I-L, all of their plates are as good as my salad. I look forward to flying into town for my next visit (now sooner rather than later) and heading straight to La Flor. I came in with a friend on a Saturday evening for deserts and was very disappointed to discover that what I had remembered as a cute restaurant took a bad turn. The service became obnoxious when the waitress heard we came for (only--in her words) cake and coffee--regardless of the fact that 'only' three other tables were occupied. It took over half an hour to serve us two peaces of cake and coffee!!! (did I mention that only three other table were occupied?) The cakes were reasonable in quality and size but nothing special, however, the coffee was way below average. After indicating we wanted the check we waited another 15 minutes. We ended up paying close to $25 for our order including tip-- highly overpriced for Woodside, especially given the mediocre quality! Next time I want obnoxious service with a high price tag I'll go to the UWS.... read more

Been twice, once for lunch where I had a fabulous Mexican sandwich with my wife, who is also an excellent judge of sandwiches. Delicious! Had to return for the dinner menu. Had the chicken enchilada for dinner - very creative, lovely to look at and excellent with the fresh masa tortilla bed. If you're in the neighborhood (Jackson Heights not too far from the subway station), go. Not expensive and a wonderfully creative take on Mexican and Latin cuisine. Driving around Sunnyside on a Sunday morning, I had an enormous craving for Mexican breakfast. One that would make justice of their vast cuisine and not the typical bodega-like bacon egg & cheese... After a quick search, i found "la flor" as my nearest best candidate. The name is honestly a bit bland and not so food inviting. "The Flower" as translated to English did not remind me of re-fried beans or eggs, but being hungry, i ignored my antics. I walked into a rather dark but yet cozy and charming setting. The restaurant offered a more Spanish feeling along with the acoustical guitar in the background, they did though, decorate the interior with plenty of flower paintings and tile. Definitely an oasis from the archi-urban scape of Sunnyside. I started off with the two most popular dishes (per the waiter): the french toast and the "huevos a la mexicana". Not too long after, i was given the egg dish. Nicely decorated given the fact that it is merely eggs, beans and tortilla along with some spicy veggies. Right from the get-go i felt the spice in the eggs. I don't complain since i happen to like spice in my foods, but it can catch someone else off guard. The architecture of the dish made it easy to eat and the refried beans were not salty as i expected (which is good) and added a nice balance to the eggs. Shortly after the star of the show came, the french toasts. Presentation was OK. I, however, appreciated the syrup on the side. After a small bite a bigger bite followed. You could tell the french toasts were fried a little bit longer than usual, giving them a more crispy texture, but the syrup with fruits made it all better. The syrup and the crispy-ness of the toasts made me feel i was having desert instead of breakfast. Highly recommended. I ended my Sunnyside experience with their chocolate soufflé. Took about 10 min to make. Felt a little watery, perhaps because of the raspberry gelato on top, but the hot fudge was also there to save the day. The dessert was so so. I will definitely come back again, as i can tell the chef and the rest of the staff take breakfast crafting seriously and proved once again that Mexican cuisine is far beyond the cheap snacks you encounter in the streets. read more

We kind of camped out and the server was totally nice about it. For dessert we got this hot chocolate cake that was so delicious. Everyone talks about the breakfast at La Flor, but the piece de resistance for this charming little restaurant is dinner hour. Referred by friends who used to live in Jackson Heights -- he is a wine editor/writer and she a fabulous cook in her own right -- we approached this humble restaurant under the 7 train underpass with a little bit of doubt, I have to say. Those doubts were immediately dispelled. The starter, grilled figs drizzled with balsamic vinegar and stuffed with gorgonzola cheese, melted in my mouth. The special that night-- grilled fish with mango & avocado salsa -- was delectable. The accompanying guitar music only added to the ambiance. The staff are sowelcoming -- you will feel right at home. Do not be surprised if the chef comes out of the kitchen to find out how you liked the fish. The only thing that could improve this restaurant in my opinion would be cloth table covers and candlelight. Wonderful restaurant. Under-rated for it's dinner service. And the prices? This is the most unassuming restaurant that I have ever patronized. It is located beneath the elevated 7 Train on Roosevelt Avenue. It is also the best Mexican restaurant that I have ever been to. I cannot assess it for authenticity. Mexico is a big country, and their are many regional food variations. Once you enter, the place is dimly lit with white table clothes. The menu run from $10-$20 a plate, but the portions are large, the food is fresh, and everything is extremely well done. The staff is friendly, and you don't hear the train. The options are always great -one can eat very modestly and still walk out satisfied. Never had a bad experience with any meal with any group I have been with. The service can be on the slow side. A friend recommended this small Latin restaurant. Arriving, it's typical of the restaurants on Roosevelt Avenue. However, the menu is quite different. More exotic and extremely delicious Started with the Shrimp Quesadilla as an appetizer, and it was fantastic, not your typical quesadilla. I was recently reintroduced to La Flor by a friend who recommended it for breakfast on a Friday. We brought 2 toddlers and enjoyed a comfortable and delicious meal of fresh baked goods, fruit salad and a vegetable frittata. All was delicious. Coffee was very good (and I'm super picky) service was very good. Prices are very fair. My husband and I went for brunch today and again, were delighted by our meal. He got eggs Benedict (over spicy corn bread) YUM and I got a shrimp quesadilla. The quesadilla was one of the more delicious things I've had in a very long time. Home made tortilla, fresh plump juicy shrimp, amazing flavors. This was no average quesadilla! I would go back just to have this dish again. We've been in sunnyside for over 2 years and I'm bummed that we haven't been coming here every week. This is def our new go to- be it for a meal with our child, or a date night. Arrived here on a Friday night. The quaintness of the place along with the nicely placed ceramic pieces made me feel like I was in a unique place. There are always a good amount of people here. The menu itself is delightful with parchment paper and they have specials too. We split a mango-style salad which is just right for 2 people.
