Had dinner at this Hilton restaurant in Santa Clara in May 2023. Overall I give it a 3 star as the quality and taste of the food was very "hotelish" and not really what I expected for this type Of the restaurant t. Food was very bland and I added quite a bit of salt and pepper to make it tasty. Won't go there anymore. I am reviewing based on our breakfast visit this morning. We chose to order off of the menu versus picking the breakfast buffet. I got an omelette (I want to say it was called The Santa Clara). It was loaded with veggies, chicken sausage, and topped with a generous amount of Swiss cheese. On the side I chose the country potatoes over fruit. Coffee was good and service was excellent (Thank you Editha, Po). Yesterday morning we hit up the coffee bar for a breakfast sandwich, Americano and Latte. Do yourself a favor, and do not eat here. I don't know if it's Covid issues or what but it was almost comical it was so bad eating here. We checked into our hotel at 3. Asked about room service but they do not have room service currently and was Told the restaurant opened at 4:30. We waited and had probably the worst experiences we've ever had. First, the front desk gave us a menu to look at to prepare before they opened. Bad idea. They removed items from the menu, so had to make different decisions. The kids wanted the spaghetti and meatballs that were on the menu, but nope. Not at 4:30 when they first opened. All out. No meatballs. Just spaghetti and sauce. Seeing they have burgers on the menu, we asked if they could cut up a burger for the sauce to add meat since there was no meatballs. They said sure. My husband ordered his burger medium with no sauce or lettuce. We also ordered the calamari, and the fettuccine Alfredo with Chicken. The calamari was actually really good, the fettuccine was passable and decent for what I expected. The spaghetti, not great and instead of getting a burger cut up, we received a overwell burnt New York steak. Our kids eat steak medium rare. Had we ordered a steak, it would have been medium rare but we ordered hamburger, not an over cooked steak. Very different, didn't go over well with two tired and hungry kids. My husbands burger was well done, as the steak was. Not medium like he requested. We debated sending it back, but did so because a well done burger is not enjoyable and after the kids steak with their spaghetti, we decided to. They re did the burger and it came with everything on it, drenched in sauce. Overall, do yourself a favor and do not eat here. Tip-If there's a 49er game and you're not staying @ the hotel, you won't be allowed to park here just to dine. Don't bother giving them a made up room number, they'll confirm the name matches the room number. Fortunately we reserved a room during a game. They will suggest to park elsewhere. Would have preferred a different option. Should have ordered an omelet :( way too basic! I was being difficult and didnt want melons for my fruit and was offered berries, thank you for accommodating! Wow! We stopped in here, just for a nosh to hold us over for dinner... but we were so impressed that we made a bit of a late lunch out of it ... and it looks like we're spoiled for dinner! I'm gonna gush a bit here, so bear with me. Sometimes you have the nicest experiences in the place you might not expect to. That's how we feel about La Fontana. We had to admit from the start that the service was so friendly that we really wanted to stay longer than just for a nosh. Patricia has such a sweet smile and made us feel right at home. The Manager, Chris Y., stopped by and chatted briefly during our lunch and made sure everthing was to our liking. We shared the true history of Irish Corned Beef (there is no such thing, says I), since it is, after all, St. Patrick's Day today. We tried their once-a-year (this weekend) special Corned Beef (see photo), but honetly they should make it an occasional special. The meat was moist, tender, and sparse of that salty taste. This preparation lets the flavor of the beef shine through. Just the right amount of fat made it silky and melt-in-the-mouth tender. mmmmmm. I have to speak seperately about the vegetables that came with the Corned Beef. To take the place of hackneyed cabbage, there were al dente Brussels Sprouts, perfect, and halved baby fingerling potatoes, (purple and gold) that looked to be parboiled then roasted, just to keep them creamy yet firm. Spot on. (again, see photo below) Along with warm bread, prepared as you're looking over the menu, comes sweet butter and a petit scoop of olive tapenade, laced with shredded carrot, that adds a nuance of sweet to the gentle acidity of the mix. As an appetizer we shared their Calamari Friti. It was crispy but the calamari was still very tender, and that's a skilled thing to do. There were several shrimp scattered in there for good measure, too! What a nice surprise. But, what was different here was the clever use of jalapeños and yellow peppers, suateed and added on top, as a sweet and spicy accompaniment. We took a little bite of pepper with each calamari, and boy was that good. Then, with careful timing, Patricia brought over our French Onion Soup. Now, hold on .... I know what you're thinking... how good can it be? Let me tell you ... I have had, and made, French Onion Soup around the world; New York, Paris, San Francisco and have not had better. (Well, maybe mine, but I add a float of Cognac below the cheese, ...and maybe I'm partial). This was a genuinely wonderful crock of soup. Obviously made from scratch, the bone stock was rich and flavorful without having to resort to that salty curse that so many restaurants rely upon by usuing onion base. I was delighted to find a small bay leaf in my portion, so you know it's done right! Capped with the best Gruyere (yet another photo below) and a crust of baguette, it was a good helping of winter warmth. As for drinks, they have a full bar, and a respectable wine list. We just had Arnold Palmers; it was only lunch after all. We could tell from where we sat, out in the dining room, that La Fontana has landed themselves a chef that knows what he, or she, is doing and a kitchen staff that is paying close attention. The food was thoughtfully prepared and carefully presented. The seasoning was delicate, and the menu is well crafted. You will likely be as delighted as we were. Enjoy! read more

NAILED IT!!!!!! This place is amazingly amazing! My husband and I stay in Santa Clara often for his job in Sunnyvale. We sometimes stay at The Hilton where this restaurant is located. We just happened to book a hotel across the street at the Hyatt! So disappointed in the hotel and their food.... so, we walked across the street just to drink and eat here at La Fantanas They never, ever disappoint. Their bread with butter, cracked pepper and sea salt is so good. Our favorite dish on the menu is their Cowboy steak. Tons of food for the price. The steak is cooked to perfection. And their drinks.... they are always perfect. One thing we look for in any establishment, is consistency, and this place never disappoints. I highly recommend this restaurant. We came here on a Sunday morning for their brunch buffet. We confused it with the buffet we wanted to check out at Tusca, (one is in Hilton, the other in the Hyatt) so we were a tad surprised by the differences in what we saw available at the buffet. Despite frustrated by there not being a big as selection as we thought there would be, there were some very excellent food finds here. The potatoes were cooked and spiced to perfection. They were so good that they were all almost gone when I got to them. And boo, it took them forever to refill them, so my boyfriend didn't get any. I don't know think they even had by the time we left. Also, the server offered an omelette. I got a Denver omelette with ham and peppers. Sooooo freaking good. The eggs weren't cooked too soft or too hard. Just right. And the perfect amount of cheese - not too little or too much like a lot of places. Seriously I think one of the best omelettes I've ever had in my life. The orange juice was fresh squeezed and delicious too. And we got free refills. Everything else at the buffet didn't impress me too much. I don't think we'll be back because we were told Tusca is ten times better. I ordered the mango blackened salmon salad with corn and black bean salsa, grilled lemon and mango vinaigrette. The salmon was a generous portion but very low grade and flavorless. The corn was canned and I'm not sure in what decade the lemon was grilled. The only fresh items on the plate were the diced mango and the lettuce. Typically I am held hostage in my office in Santa Clara....no car and only the dirty deli downstairs to get food- we decided to mix it up and walk to La Fontana.... Let me set the scene- It was 12:15, its an empty hotel restaurant- two of us walk in: Hostess says "Do you have a reservation?" We say no- looking around at the empty tables.... She clicks on her screen as if she has to move around all of the crazy reservations she has, sighs and picks up the menus.... She leads us to a table- we go to sit down....it has a "reserved" sign on it....she says: "No, not there...the other one"....okay..... The waiter comes by almost instantly and asks us if we are ready to order...."Um I think we will need a minute". He proceeds to stand there.....okay.... I decide on the $19 hamburger- but wait....its $1.50 for cheese....okay...$20.50 We get our food- I'm unimpressesd. The burger is overseasoned, clearly frozen prior...tastes like something from US Foods (I used to work at a hotel ok, I know your tricks).... $48 for two for lunch...round that up to $56 with tip....and you can guess...we probably won't come back....okay. read more

My rules when traveling...never eat at the hotel...so I am to blame for this review. There are not many breakfast choices near the Hilton so I ate here out of convience...big mistake. Day one my Omlette was screwed up. Mushrooms were added in and I can't stand mushrooms (long story on why I don't eat them). The waiter took my omlette back and I sat there eating my toast. Breakfast took 45 minutes and it wasn't that crowded. Luckily my appointment was running late. Waiter was nice and apologized and fixed everything. Day two my Omlette was screwed up again! Is it Groundhogs day today?Where is Bill Murray? The sad part it was the same waiter. I joked with him and said no mushrooms. He laughed and said that is why I'm writing it down today. Guess what? The chesse was missing. How hard is it to make an omlette correctly. Again waiter said sorry and went to kitchen to fight with chef. It was fun to watch the show. Breakfast took me an hour this morning. I am going to be late for work today. The decor is nice, the wait staff is nice and the food is okay (at least for breakfast) but screwing up orders in the morning when I'm trying to get to work is not acceptable. Next trip I am going to have to find alternative to breakfast here!!! Work lunch to welcome the new girl to our department. We were immediately seated at a nice large table near the back window with a lovely view of Levi's Stadium. We were promptly served our beverage order and then almost too quickly our server was back to take our meal order. I decided to go with a caesar salad and the skirt steak with arugula. The salad was nothing special or exciting, but I can say it was fresh and tastey. When my entree arrived I was pretty disappointed. There were six small slices of skirt steak on top of an arugula salad. I guess for the price of the meal I was expecting a lot more steak and a lot less green on the plate. I basically ate two salads for lunch. I don't believe the description matched the plate at all. The steak was cooked very nicely and a perfect med-rare but it completely lacked seasoning. I needed to be generous with salt and pepper. The arugula was also severely underdressed and I happen to be someone who prefers light dressing on my salads. I just feel like arugula tastes like weeds if not dressed appropriately. I've been here plenty of times over the years and will most definitely be back. I'm giving La Fontana an average rating, but not because there was anything average about it. First, the house merlot was the worst wine I've ever had. I'm a frugal foodie, so I've tried some pretty cheap booze and this was still the worst. I took two small sips and declared it "blah." The service, when you could get their attention, was thoughtful and polite, but slow. My husband and I were happy we ordered our steak and lamb medium rare, or perhaps we could have been there all night. Now, about the food. . . My husband's beef filet was done just right, juicy and tasty. It wasn't the best we've had, but it was flavorful and tender. My dish was lamb chops. The dish was arranged nicely, with roasted garlic, portabello mushrooms, asparagus and mashed potato symmetrically highlighting four huge pieces of lamb. I excitedly took the first bite of meat. I got nothing but lukewarm fat. I took the second bite of meat, only to get the same. Really, there was nothing else to do but down the unpleasant sensation with the cheap wine. By the time I was done, I had quaffed 3/4 of the merlot just to wash down the lamb. Of the four chops, only one seemed to be made of meat. To be fair, the flavor was fine, albeit served cold, and the asparagus was cooked but crisp. In the end, here's how I'd have to sum it up. The full portions at La Fontana are huge, but the prices are hotel prices. The lamb cost around $25, and the modest six-ounce filet cost about $18. The hideous house wine was later declared a bargain by my husband, whose soda cost $4. The wine was $5.50. My son got a huge-size kid plate of chicken fingers and fries. I wouldn't go back. This restaurant is really about 2 1/2 stars, but I'm giving the half star for the new staff that really seemed to be trying to figure out what diners want. read more

I stayed at the Hilton for business and here's what I had: Burger with Swiss and Mushrooms: Fries were crispy, meat was fresh, but that's about it. They were plain ingredients--sauteed mushrooms, big ol' beef patty, and a slice of swiss--thrown together between a toasted bun. No sauce, no seasoning. NY Strip Steak: I liked the potatoes, shoe-string onions, and asparagus. But the meal's main attraction, the STEAK, was pretty tough, even when I asked for medium rare. Pasta w/ Chicken in Sun-Dried Tomato Cream Sauce: This was my FAVORITE of the three. Pasta was al dente, chicken was flavorful and tender, and the cream sauce was light. I liked the addition of spinach. Overall, it was well balanced and delicious. This was worth my [company's] money. Because of the last meal, I raised the overall rating to 3 stars. Staff was super-friendly, so I feel guilty for giving a low rating. But honestly, only come to La Fontana if money is no object. You're better off having a sentimental meal somewhere else. read more
