This location is one of my favorite restaurants when I'm in the area. The atmosphere and environment is conducive for family time, meeting up with a friend or out for a date. Often times I find that the service is (very) sub-par- employees are always distracted or not attentive, and usually it takes a bit before they get to your order. I've seen servers pull pastries out of the fridge and serve them cold (when they should be warmed first) not giving a second thought to what their doing. Service in general is pretty impersonal. Though this spot is in a great location and has potential to be better, it's just not meeting the mark. In the Washington D.C. area for a convention, I walked by the La Madeleine French Bakery & Café on King Street several times before stopping in for a late evening meal. It was 9:40 at night and the place was empty but for two tables and myself. At first I thought this was a sit-down style restaurant with full service. It took me a few moments to figure out this was a cafeteria style establishment. Not a negative, but a bit deceptive from the outside looking in. Genet was my cashier/server and I ordered the French Dip sandwich at $8.99 with an upgrade of French Onion soup for an extra buck. I was handed a wooden spoon with number on it and a cup of lukewarm soup. I found a table and had a seat making sure to stand the spoon up straight so my server could locate me once the sandwich was made. French onion soup was - like I said - lukewarm and had a greasy taste. Sandwich wasn't any better. Restaurant was clean, colorful and very appropriately set. Service was matter of fact and courteous. Fruit bowl- fruit was on its last hours of life, grapes were more raisin than grapes. Country French Breakfast- eggs over medium were well done. Potatoes Galette were old and cold, in-eatable, croissant was a bit more of a biscuit than a croissant yet doughy in the middle. Service was adequate. This bakery is a must stop by if you are in the area. The carrot cake was delicious and moist. I know everyone doesn't like carrot cake, but if a cake made with carrots, nuts and cream cheese can be that good then everything else should be a homer in. This was a nice French bakery, and a nice change from Starbucks. We stopped in for a light bite for lunch. We had caesar salad which was very good, vegetable soup which was a bit salty and too thin, and the florentine quiche which was light and a bit flavorless. They told us there were only eggs, cheese and milk in the quiche and I believed them. Next time they should add a bit of salt and pepper. The desserts in the front of the cafe were authentic french and quite fresh. The lemon tartlet, the Napoleon, and the croissant, were all perfection. We enjoy lingering. read more
