The food, while always excellent, was even better than usual on my last visit. My quiche Lorraine is fresh and bursting with of chunks of ham, with a crisp Caesar salad and my favorite French onion soup. It's a great lunch and I don't feel like I need to do something healthy later to counter gorging on French food. Y'all need to fix the ordering system. The two hollow headed ladies in front of us were so confused - and then kept interrupting as we ordered and picked up items - that I almost walked out mid order. While I assume neither was a Nobel laureate, some of their bovine behavior would have been alleviated with a menu board. It was so infuriating as a guest. I'm trying to get to the end of the line so I can give you money -- and they're hosting a Mean Girls reenactment because they can't figure out how to get food in a restaurant. This is not the place to go in the evening. Two friends and I wanted Caesar salad and rotisserie chicken but we found out they discontinued this item several years ago. One friend and I ordered breakfast, which the menu states is served all day. Ordered eggs over medium and they arrived over hard, for both of us. I ordered ham but got bacon and the manager later brought me the ham. Bacon was not fresh tasting and was probably cooked that morning and refrigerated all day. My ham was literally thinly sliced deli meat. Three coffee thermoses held lukewarm and cold coffee. The manager did offer to make me fresh decaf coffee, and the new coffee was delicious. But my friend drank her lukewarm regular coffee. My other friend asked for his tomato bisque to be reheated. By this time the manager was probably getting sick of us. The bread was the only thing that was fairly good. I noticed the place getting packed with seniors around the time we were leaving around 7 pm. I could not understand this. read more

The food is delicious! And the service is impeccable! My husband and I have enjoyed brunch, dinner, and dessert here several times. Tonight we both tried something new. I've been going here for years and for some reason, I think this place is lowering their standards. Their prices are increasing and the portions are getting smaller. Aside from that, their chicken friand is pretty good with their mushroom sauce. I had the grilled chicken Caesar salad today. It was delicious. Always ask for the dressing on the side because they are a little heavy handed when they dress the salad for you. This place has complementary bread and jam by their drink station. Totally take advantage of it. :) Their strawberry rhubarb jam is pretty darn tasty. For dessert, they have these mini servings of their signature cakes. I recommend the Sacher torte because it's made with a dark chocolate cake layered with chocolate ganache and raspberry jam. This location is nearby and very convenient. We go here frequently because we love their soup and the food in general is consistently good. The service can be hit or miss there, though. For a long time, it was top-notch but has kind of tapered off into being sort of "meh." I think the driving force behind the over-the-top service was a manager who I no longer see in the store. This super nice cashier paid for my meal today! (I was such an airhead that I forgot my wallet at home! I was so embarrassed!) She was so understanding! I definitely owe her one! So my first time at this location, I ordered pick up. I got a caramel macchiato and put in the notes "iced if possible", for some odd reason they steamed the milk and then put ice in it. This monstrous creation was absolutely terrible. And 4+$ at that. Then there was my croissant sandwich, I paid the extra to half avocado on the sandwich, not only was it not on the sandwich and on the side but wasn't even sliced so that I could put it on the sandwich with some level of ease. And then there's my ham and Swiss croissant pasty that is ice cold. 17$ so that I could heat and assemble my food myself and drink an incredibly watered down macchiato. I have been to a La Madeline for desserts before, but I finally was able to experience the food and environment here last week for the first time! Environment: I was pretty surprised that I only found two other reviews for this location because it was packed on the Sunday afternoon that I went. People left and right with all sorts of foods. I had always thought La Madeline was a bakery with just salads and little pastries. Boy, was I wrong. My friends had to do a walk through for me because I was terribly confused with the ordering process. If you want a dessert, you order those at the first counter when you first walk inside. For everything else, there's menus that you can browse through. If you want something from the menu, let the employee take your order at the front of the salad line. In return, he'll give you a huge wooden spoon with a letter/number (so they know where to find you). At this point, pick up a tray and go through the salad line. In this line, you can order hand-mixed salads, fruits, and quiche. Pick up a glass cup for drinks, and then you pay at the end of the line and seat yourself. Items ordered from the menu will be brought to your seat. Service: Excellent service. The employee did a great job of not laughing at me when I mispronounced Beef Bourguignon and kindly directed me toward the cashier at the end. Overall, the employees had a high level of enthusiasm, and the cashier even expressed a friendly "bon appetit" when I left to take a seat. We had a table of about 10 people and there were no problems. All of our food came out in a timely manner and we were all satisfied. Food: As said earlier, I ordered the Beef Bourguignon, a Quiche Lorraine, and a Strawberries Romanoff. My boyfriend also ordered us Creme Brulee and a Sacher Chocolate Cake Parfait (my favorite). I was a bit disappointed with the Beef Bourguignon because I'm a huge fan of rare beef. I wasn't expecting for my beef to be rare in this case, but I did expect it to be more tender (almost a pot roast consistency). It seemed very much that the dish was put into the oven when I ordered it. Tasted quite bland and the pieces were overly chewy. The potatoes around the edges were a bit dry and burnt, which wasn't appealing. I had a hard time finishing that dish. Quiche Lorraine was very good; stuffed with the right amount of meats and was the presented at the right temperature. The crust flaked off nicely and the inside was very moist and had an appealing texture. As for the Strawberries Romanoff, I should have ordered two of those. The cream that they put on the strawberries tastes like heaven. I love how light and fluffy the whip is, and it compliments the strawberries well. I also feel that La Madeline actually washes their fruits and hand picks the ripest, reddest strawberries. They were really clean and super sweet. Strawberries Romanoff is a must get from here! The desserts were also really good from here. I know some of my friends come here only for the cakes and tarts. I've actually tried several of their desserts, and I have yet to taste one that I don't like. However, I think the mini portions are enough for me because the cakes tend to be very sweet and rich. I know I ranted about the Beef Bourguignon, but La Madeline still gets 5/5 stars because the environment was nice and clean and the staff was friendly. The other items that were ordered also tasted very good, so I think I just ordered something that didn't suit me. A few of my friends ordered sandwiches and salads that looked excellent. As we were eating our meals, I was already planning for the next time I would come back to La Madeline because I loved it so much. It was my first time here and I was quite confused on how everything went. I had to go look for an employee just to help me figure out how to order, and ask if it's open seating and etc. I actually told myself inside the restaurant the next time I come I'll have to definitely come when its much slower and less people there. The food was actually great tho despite all the noise going on. It would be a great place to take the family. But in my opinion not somewhere you would want to carry a conversation. I'm never really happy with this location. The food is not as bright or fresh as it was in years past. Typically when I go, I get a croissant and coffee. The older gentleman at the register never charges for coffee, which is nice, and because a cup of coffee is almost pure profit for them. Last time I was in, though, he charged me for both. That's ok, but inconsistent. I asked why he was charging me for coffee when he never did before, and he literally said, "our District Manager is here today so I have to." read more

The short female working the counter was beyond hateful and rude to almost every single customer in line. I was praying she would have been rude with me. Used to be a pretty fair restaurant. It's now pathetic. Ordered the seasonal turkey, dressing, green beans almondine with cranberry orange chutney and mushroom gravy. Their website has a picture of the dish which looks delicious. What I got was: thinly sliced sandwich style turkey; instead of the dry dressing pictured they served spooned up mush dressing that looked like a plop of dog vomit (uneatable) ; about 10 extremely thin, small green beans with 1 almond per serving; NO cranberry orange chutney; about a tablespoon of gravy; and not a crumb of bread for the meal. If you're in that area save yourself some grief and your palate being insulted and go across the street to Market Street Grocery or even the Whataburger. This was disgusting. read more

Tried something new called the Chicken Friand de Madeleine. This is going to be a new staple for my visits here! It's basically a pate chaud with mushrooms and mushroom cream on top. Absolutely heavenly. I love pate chaud (a well known and popular meat filled pastry in my culture) and I love the cream of mushroom soup here. It's the best of both worlds when you combine them together. You don't taste much chicken in the friand until you reach the middle of it, but the outside is a crispy, golden, and flaky goodness. The mushroom cream makes it soggy in a fantastic way and softens up part of the bread. I was super hungry after my classes, so the chicken friand didn't fill me up. I would suggest ordering a potato galette with this, which I will describe as a patty of crisp hashbrowns, or anything else you would like on the menu. Note: I am am not an overly critical reviewer, I feel this place could live up to something much better than what I was serve and payed for. For $10 to get a lunch sampler I was very unimpressed. I believe the quality of the food could be just a bit better if they trained the staff more on prep and presentation. The soup is obviously from a can, my french onion soup was so salty I returned it for the country potato which was MUCH better, the french onion soup had a slice of bread dipped in it with a sprinkle of shredded cheese, no fun, everyone orders this soup for the soft bread and gooey cheese, I have a feeling that they typically prepare it the right way, though this day the staff just did it the fastest way. My quiche florentine was oily and crispy(not in a good way). The strawberry romanoff (thing) was delicious, though I'm sure it was not worth the 3$ or so that I payed for it. I did like the atmosphere. My girlfriend ordered the croque monsieur, it was too big to eat with her hands and take a single bite, the filling was falling out, and it was burnt almost black on some of the edges. No where near an actual sandwich of the same name I had many times in France. All of this was a real bummer, considering it is hard enough to find healthy food at a reasonable price in Arlington considering I have almost burnt out Poteger, Jason's Deli, and Beruit Cafe. read more

I discovered LM in 1986 when I lived in Houston and immediately fell in love. The country French décor was so inviting. The staff had French accents and helped make the place seem authentic. And then the food. They had the best buttery crusty croissants, marvelous mushroom soup, yummy pastries and the best pecan tart anywhere. What's happened? Were the bean counters and food police given control of the recipes? Is there any butter left in the croissants and pastries? Is there any cream left in the cream of mushroom? At least the bread is still good. And the madeleines are pretty tasty. But I'm hard-pressed to want to spend $20/year there now, where I used to spend that much in a month, when I was poor. I have been enjoying La Madeline's since 1990. This is the only horrible La Mad. Only good thing I can say is the service is reliable-always horrible and you can count on not getting what you order or pay for. Consistently s l o w, everyone is in a fog running around with plates of food in their hands trying to figure out who's food goes to what table( all the while, the plates getting colder by the minute). The first time was a bit frustrating because I wasn't sure how their little cafeteria system of ordering worked and there was no one there to ask and when we asked someone behind the counter they were very rude, but I've not seen her there again and it's been a great experience every time I've visited since. The food is AWESOME. Breakfast and brunch is the best. I love the Country French Breakfast and the Egg Crepe Champignon. Coffee is great. Atmosphere is great. Staff is friendly. Highly recommended if you're a fan of simple little french bistros with great food and friendly staff. Food is served uber quickly to boot so it's great if you're in a hurry. This la Madeline is pretty much par with the others. I wish they didn't try to speak French because it always seems lazy and half-hearted. I have a French foreign exchange student and took French through high school and college so maybe I'm jaded. They generally have a good selection of bakery items and the typical pasta, salad and sandwich mix of a bistro. They offer complimentary bread with blackberry and orange marmalade.
