What a bad experience! I came early afternoon, around 1:45pm, and waited over 10 minutes at the cash register waiting to order. Not a single staff member acknowledged I was there and waiting. They were not busy, and I was the only person waiting to order. After placing my sandwich order, I took my number to the table and waited. And waited. 35 minutes later I went back to the counter to ask about my order. When I told them I'd ordered a croque monsieur, the 2 staff members said, "Oh, she gave that to someone else." My cousin selected this place as a last-ditch effort to get food nearby. I read that it was like a "Country French Cafe" so I immediately likened it to my favorite French places back home with a country twist to it. I had ordered the Holiday Cafe Sampler, of which included a Turkey & Cranberry Puff Pastry, Tomato Basil Soup, and the Pesto Pasta. I did pick up a Linzer heart-shaped cookie. We found a place close to the fireplace in the middle of the cafe and sat down to it. While my cousin enjoyed her food, I just kinda felt like it was meh. The Puff Pastry was excellent and flaky but the filling was seriously lacking. I didn't taste any cranberry and the turkey was mini turkey meatballs, maybe 4 or 5. Really disappointed. The soup was ok but I felt that more herbs could have been used and less salt. The pesto pasta was very cold and uninteresting. The best part of the outing was the cookie which was excellent. I used to love this place. My dad used to bring us to La Madeleine all the time. It has really gone downhill compared to a few years ago. The quality of their food used to be much better but lately is just OK. It all looks great but the flavor is lacking. This place is on the pricier side. I wouldn't mind forking out more cash if the quality was better, but it's not. Service is very slow, disorganized and friendly enough. It's a cafeteria style set up. Grab yourself a tray and stand in line, pay at the end. They get +1 star because of their complimentary bread and jams. The bread is always fresh and the jams taste delicious. Their bread station is located at the back of the restaurant, just help yourself. Overall, it's a nice place to catch up with a friend over a pastry and hot drink. The patio tables outside were disgusting. Trash, old plates and trays were scattered around outside and it wasn't even busy. It was a beautiful weekday afternoon and I was attempting to enjoy lunch outside but it was ruined. I had to clear the LEAST dirtiest looking table by myself. 4/13/19 The Chicken Crepe Revara and the shepherd's pie without the crust were delicious. Tried the oatmeal raisin cookie and the caramel creme brulee are good. The brulee was served cold so I asked for it to be warmed up a bit. 2 minutes in the oven and it wasn't hot, but it wasn't cold either. The atmosphere here is nice and warm. Especially since we are sitting by a cheery fire. We hear people speaking in many different languages as we sit here just enjoying our time together. We will enjoy coming back here again. read more

I was disappointed by my visit to this particular La Madeleine. Staff was indifferent and confused. No clean tables available although restaurant was only half full. I asked staff for help clearing a table, they nodded and never returned. Watched them walk by table after table, never clearing a one. Myself and several others had to make our own spaces to eat on dirty tables (i.e. not wiped down and covered in crumbs and dirty plates, glasses, silverware. I also observed the same sandwich be carried around the restaurant for over 10 minutes until it was delivered to a table that the server has passed 5 times at least. When it came to the food, I received my soup immediately. It was hot and tasty. Sandwich was good but salad was watery and nothing barely any green lettuce. The 'fresh' bread was stale, one container of butter available and no jellies. If you are going to offer these amenities, at least be at company standards. I'm pretty easy going regarding most dining experiences and forgiving of staff that's trying hard and just can't get ahead. These people didn't seem to give a darn. With chain restaurants customers expect consistency. On this day, this particular La Madeleine let me, it's other customers, and the restaurant brand down. read more

I love basic breakfast here before heading back down to good 'ole Virginia Beach. It's quick and clean. My family likes the baked goods here, and I think service is pretty friendly. My benedict came on croissant, so when I popped that over easy poached egg, the runny yolk soaked my flaky pastry! Yuummm. I went with a caramel "macchiato," which was pretty much a caramel latte, but don't let me bring my coffee snobbery out in public. It was sweet with nice foam. It was a nice getaway weekend, so I totally spoiled myself. I did get a chocolate croissant to-go and ate it for breakfast in the office. 8 seconds in the microwave was all it needed to get warm, chocolaty, and yummmyy. We came here with a party of about 6 people, but you would think it was closer to 60, with how frazzled the employees became as far as taking our orders. La Madeleine used to be a favorite hangout, going there several times each month. Then I moved a bit further West, to the suburbs and only got to stop in seldom. The recipes are the same, and SHOULD lead to similar experiences at all location, but they don't. I have owned 5 restaurants in the past and hold a certified food handling manager certification. This particular review is for the location in Falls Church. Everything in the restaurant is old, and poorly kept. There is dirt and grime everywhere, evident of a sloppy cleaning crew that only does a superficial job. There are cleaning tools (like brooms and dustpans) literally laying around on the floor. The ones that are hung up on the wall are dirty and as a consequence the wall they touch is dirty, too. The portion of the storage room that is visible from customer areas is in disarray, lacking all organization and piling goods and supplies willy-nilly, all over the place. I am surprised this place passes their State inspection. But don't worry, I called in the inspector to pay them a visit and check the cleanliness of the place. Nobody cleans the tables and chairs, so you need to be careful where you sit and you need to wipe down your own table. Service is below any expectation. Nobody gives a crap about you being there; they just keep chatting with each-other or milling about, aimlessly. They either lack training or they just don't care, or both. You sit and wait and nobody pays you any attention. Took a good 7-8 minutes before anybody even bothered to come near me, although there was only another couple in front. When you pick up your cutlery, you have to check it out carefully because the washing is poorly done and not all the spoons are clean. Now, to the food! I had a chicken friand and the tomato basil soup. The soup was great. After all, they just cut open the bag and heat it, so there is minimum opportunity to screw up soup. The chicken friand had sat on the warming display table for hours (long past the recommended amount of time to keep it there. Everything was dry and felt like eating sawdust. There are several reasons for discarding food that has sat in the warming display. One of them is health and safety, and all the others are about taste and texture. This food item gets 5 Yucks. By the way, this is not because of the bad recipe, just because of the bad, uncaring staff. Now to the drinks! I had The Cappuccino. It did not look anything like the picture and there was a fair amount of spill that went into the little saucer. That is NOT how you serve it. If you spill a little while bringing to the customer, just put a clean saucer under it and wipe the outside of the cup! I also had a cup of ice water with lemon. Except, there was no ice in the machine and there was no lemon in the little cooler container that normally sits next to the soda/water fountain. How hard is it to keep the ice machine filled and the lemon slices supplied, especially when you have almost no customers in line? Very disappointing service quality. Same goes for the signature bread display with butter and preserves. On my first two visits it was mostly empty, on my last one even the display had gone away. Not sure if this is a corporate policy or just the local store being mismanaged. Now to the ambiance! This was the most disappointing aspect of my visit. Before writing anything about this, I make sure that I go to the place at least three times, with at least one of them on the weekend, to encounter all kinds of conditions. During the week, it was mostly empty, with slow service and disinterested and aimless staff. During the weekend, it turned into a dump. There were a lot of customers (some of whom even brought their own paper cups of coffee from another provider), occupying multiple tables and having loud conversations in foreign languages and sitting there forever, keeping the tables unavailable. There were at least 4 tables that were occupied when I walked in, were occupied by the same customers during my visit, and they were still occupied by the same people when I left. Not one of them had any La Madeleine food or drink items in front of them, but had coffee from Panera and other places. Yes, I am also an immigrant to this country, but I have acquired the decency of not intruding upon the enjoyment of others, who are in the same establishment with me. Boorish behavior does not belong in a public eating establishment. Overall, company management should either retrain or fire the staff, then temporarily close the place and rebuild it so it does not look like a rundown hovel, and then we can only hope they will not let the standards of quality run into the drain, again. read more

This place has horrible customer service and they do not keep food items or beverages filled. The workers are lazy and do not even provide the minimum amount of attention to their guests. We stood in a line of people waiting to order for at least 15 minutes. There was extra staff hanging out at the cash register and walking around and not noticing (or caring) the people waiting in line. Once we were able to order they were out of most hot items, specifically the chicken friand we wanted, which is fine. After ordering TWO caesar salads we were just handed one, so we waited longer for the second to be made. After the amount of time it took to make the salad and get checked out the chicken was cold and so was my mushroom soup. THIS IS HOW LONG IT TOOK TO ORDER, RECEIVE THE FOOD, AND PAY. After paying for my items on this visit the mango tea ran out in the middle of filling my cup. I politely informed the staff and proceeded to take my time eating and catching up with my friend. After at least 30 minutes I return to fill my tea and there is still none. I'm told "we don't have anymore" because "she can't find it." A manager is asked and shows them very quickly where it is. When the manager sees us standing there staring and asked us what we were waiting for I told him we've been waiting a very long time for the mango iced tea. He replied with "it'll just be a few minutes", at which time I informed him I asked for it 30 minutes ago. He then walked away without really giving a care at all. If they had taken a minute of consideration to ask someone 30 minutes earlier the tea would have been made. This is just one example of the bad service experienced at this location, and it's so simple. I picked up a salmon Caesar salad today and I was very disappointed to find that they are using iceberg lettuce rather than romaine. And there was no signage to indicate they made this choice. Obviously, a Caesar salad is known to have romaine lettuce. Since this was a takeout order I did not discover this until I got home and I wasn't gonna drive back because I don't live that close. Very disappointing because iceberg lettuce is not as flavorful and is certainly not as nutritious. This was my first time here! My overall experience was okay. What I loved the most is the cafe ambiance- as I was sitting by the fire. It was warm and toasty which was perfect for a rainy day! So I went and ordered the chicken pesto sandwich with a side of cream of mushroom soup. Raspberry lemonade and lemon tart for dessert. The sandwich bread was extremely hard and I had difficulty chewing it. The cheese wasn't melted and I asked if it's possible to melt the cheese-- I was told no. The soup was delicious. Supposed to be a pesto pasta with a regular size bread, but instead I got a white pasta with a mini cold bread, after 20min of waiting at the rush hour 12:30pm with only one person in the kitchen making all the Dishes for a big line of clients.
