I was treated with kindness and professionalism from the moment I walked in. The cakes were delicious, and my family loved and raved about them. Cakes and food is alright. I don't recommend due to their service being horrible. I called for a plain cake for 10 people with drops decoration on the side. They said they couldn't do that because the cake was too small. I didn't want to get any decorations on the cake or writing, just a drip cake. They said they couldn't do it so I asked for a plain yellow cake, they said alright and that it would be $65 + taxes. I was like okay let me check in with my family if that's alright since they didn't want to do what we wanted. (And I love tres leches) I got a tres leches cake for my birthday last year. It was a last minute decision, they were closing, and were happy to accommodate. Great customer service! Lucky us they had one cake left and it was a gorgeous lightly frosted cake, with pink decoration. The writing on the cake was perfect. When we finally dug in, I was amazed at how clean the cake cut. I was thinking tres leches would be kind of a wet cake. When I took a bite, I was in heaven. Full blown tres leches flavor and sooo moist. We bought a cake and even before they made it we asked to change it and they said no and made it we asked for certain changes, but Pam was incredibly rude and refused to make any adjustments. I've been going here for years but looked on Yelp today to order a cake over the phone for pickup a little later today and was shocked at how bad the reviews are. I think everyone's wound up about the process for ordering a cake either over the phone or in person and how it's kind of a PITA. It's a cultural thing. This is exactly how a bakery would be run if it were in a Latin American country (you have to have the PINK receipt, not the charge slip, you have to stand in line and get a number, you have to sign a certain on a certain spot, not wherever you want. I've been seeing the sign for this bakery for years during my travels around Seven Corners! So, today I finally spontaneously decided to pull into the plaza and check it out! As it turns out, the bakery specializes in baked goods from El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and North and South America. There are totally adorable pinatas hanging from the ceiling! The bakery has a large selection of sweets, including many types of cookies, cakes, tarts and more!! I decided to try out a piece of chocolate/vanilla/caramel cake and a vanilla custard tart with fresh fruit on it! The tart was wonderful! I devoured it way too fast! I really enjoyed the cake too, but I didn't realize it had a whipped cream-based frosting; I prefer sweet, buttercream frosting. I would definitely go back again! We ordered a queso bread (kind of like a cunape) and a buñuelo (a large circular crispy fried treat that is covered with melted brown sugar). We cut the cake and there was no fruit inside just a plain cake this is very disappointing. I called for an order of a small cake for 15 ppl and something simple saying Feliz Cumpleaños in pink. The cake is for about 15-18 ppl and I was actually able to keep the order process simple as well with the help of Omar who guided me through cake creation to payment and confirmation. We sauntered over here after dim sum, having smelled the delicious smells of sweet cake. Even though Castro Bakery is next door to Hong Kong Pearl, the clientele were different (i.e., Spanish speakers instead of Chinese speakers). Most of people coming in were picking up cakes (and perhaps one of the piñatas too). Honestly, I was a bit surprised by the cake prices ($30 for a smaller cake, which is why I deducted a star), but I bought a slice of cake and I now understand the prices. It's a layered cake with 2 layers of fruit in the middle (you can choose a different fruit for each layer) - and it wasn't overly sweet like a Safeway or Giant cake. It was pretty freaking delicious - I don't know how to describe it except to say that you need to try it yourself. We ended up picking up an assortment of 6 different pastries. My favorite (other than the cake) was the guava pastry (phyllo dough stuffed with guava deliciousness and baked in a triangle shape). I may have eaten more than my half while my husband was in the bathroom... He wasn't too pleased! I never once encountered bad service and my family and I have been coming here since I was kid. Goes to show how long they have been in the game. Like I said in my previous review, Castro's has the best tasting cakes in my opinion but the customer service is so bad and they need to hire someone who can write a little better on the cakes. We came here yesterday to place an order for mothers day which is today (Sunday). They took the order and I told them what I wanted written on the cake which was "Feliz dia de las Madres." This means Happy Mothers Day in Spanish. My husband went to pick up the cake and the first thing he noticed was the horrible writing. Not only was the lettering really sloppy but they totally forgot two letters. One S for the word "las" and one S for the word "madres." My husband made them correct their mistake and asked them why they don't pay attention more to what they're doing. All the lady answered back was that she wasn't the one doing the writing of the cakes so it's not her fault. I understand that it's not the lady's fault but that is no way to respond to a customer who is in all his right to complain. The smells filling Castro's Bakery were delightful! I entered the bakery looking for a small cake to pair with my coffee. Although I purchased a slice of banana bread and a second slice of corn bread, Castro's bakery seemed to specialize in large sheet cake orders for special occasions. The bread was good, but I would not get it again. There were three large cases of pastries, mostly Latin confections. And all pastries were labeled in Spanish. I have been coming to Castro's for years and love all the cakes and food however lately the service has been lacking and slanted. On this visit I was skipped over numerous times for others that were not standing in the area to order. This visit I was picking up a cake only. After brining this to the attendant's attention I was verbally' corrected' about standing in the waiting area and spoken to in a very demeaning manner. The funny part about this was the night before when ordering we were helped immediately without standing even remotely near the order area. I love love love this bakery! There are a large varieties of pastry and they are so cheap yet delicious. Their semitas de pina is out of this world. I live in Fairfax and once every two weeks I have to endure the 40' drive to get here for my fix, each time buying their whole semitas de pina inventory (They don't make a lot of these, may be 8 large rectangular pieces per batch) My mom likes their pate choux and eclairs a lot.
