We have to move, probably out of Allston (we're getting priced out after 30 years), and the place I'm going to miss most is La Mamma. It has always been there for us, cooking up tasty sandwiches, pasta, empanadas, burgers and fries, and pizza. The spinach & mushroom empanadas are the best. I do miss my favorite, the plain spinach empanadas that used to be on the menu (I'm hoping I'm not remembering that wrong.) We have tried many, many pizzas over the past 25 years. We love the Hawaiian, which has both ham and bacon. We like the Margherita, the Rustica, and the Buffalo Chicken Pizza...all the pizzas are yummy. You can get New York style. You can get Sicilian. So good. When we're in the mood for sandwiches, my husband loves the steak and cheese. They also have a selection of Chilean sandwiches--the Beef Chacareros is a bit pricier, but it's grilled steak with green beans, avocado, mayonnaise and tomatoes. I am partial to the pasta dishes, when I've saved the calories/carbs for it. My go-to is ravioli with eggplant parm on top. Oh my God, I love it. Although, I do take off the generous pile of melted mozzarella off the top--a bit too much fat and calories--you can eat it if you want! :-) I've also tried the Fettuccini Alfredo, a rare treat. but sometimes ya just gotta. Re-start the diet tomorrow, dude. I'm sure there are more dishes we've ordered from La Mamma and enjoyed. NEVER in 15 years working in Allston MA, having numerous of Restaurants delivering to me & my team @ advance auto, up the street from them!!! I have we ever had any delivery issue, but this restaurant seems to only have delivery driver that does not speaks nor understand English!! This place has awesome hot subs. I have not had a good cubano outside Florida ever. La Mamma's cubano may not be entirely authentic, but it's delicious, as is the hot pastrami, and every other sub I've gotten! Also, it's open late, which is a plus for weird work schedules. read more

I used to get La Mamma 30 years ago in college. The quality control has suffered quite a bit in the interim. I got a ricotta and sausage calzone which was delicious if unbalanced. The pizza is delicious NY style, they don't rip you off on toppings, they can make gourmet style, their pasta dishes are excellent, they have some nice Mexican dishes, it's family owned and been part of the neighborhood for decades. The owner of this place may be the biggest jerk on the planet but DAMN they make a great pizza. Can't get enough.

Their pupusas were okay. However, their empanadas had too many onions. The empanadas should be called onion empanadas instead. The meat/chicken to onion ratio was off. I'm latin american and the amount of onions placed in empanadas should be minimal just for flavoring. I probably won't order their empanadas again. Deliciousness Found in Grittiness Is it really possible to find something tasty in a place that looks gritty? This place is one example. The first time I came here, it was with a group of guys that I know after a Friday night of drinking some beers. A guy was craving for more food, and we ended up getting a pizza with pineapple slices on top. It was not a bad pizza, but it was definitely a mediocre pizza. The flavor of the crust was a little bland. This place's specialty is actually not pizza, but cuisine from Spanish speaking countries in South America. I walked back in, and ordered a beef Chacarero, and a Empanada. A Chacarero is a sandwich originally from Chile, and it usually has meat, green beans and some sort of avocado sauce, somewhat similar to a Mexican Cemita. The bread of the Chacarero is actually excellent. It has a nice chewiness. The beef was juicy and had a pretty good flavor and was really tasty with the avocado sauce. The Chacarero is significantly better than the pizza they serve here. Their Empanadas are not bad. An Empanada is a fried dough pastry with meat inside. I got a Beef Empanada and it has a nice crispiness on the outside with a little greasiness, and the beef had a hot and nice chewiness on the inside. If you add a little spice, it can make the Empanada tastier. I would say that a couple of Empanadas are definitely better than the pizza they serve here. The interior definitely has this gritty look, and it gave me the feeling that I was not in Boston, but in the worst areas of the Bronx borough in New York. The people who run the place definitely have this demeanor that they do not like to get besmirched and one of the persons who work here has somewhat of a snide appearance. It is definitely one of the uncleanest places that serve food, but somehow they can keep the government inspectors happy. I guess to make your experience enjoyable, just order take away from this place and eat the food in the comfort of your own home. Overall, if you are looking for a great Chacarero or a decent Empanada, this is actually a great choice if you do not mind grittiness. I would not recommend this place to get pizza, as there are plenty of better pizza places in this neighborhood. Just ordered from this place for the first time and I have to say, I'll be coming back again. Out of the three other local pizza places I've tried, La Mamma's definitely has a more flavor. Update 10/6 - After this review, I've gone here few more times. Still been great until today. They overcharged me when I placed a delivery order. I called to question the charge, and they told me delivery is a charge. But that didn't explain why I was charged so much for two items. They said it was a mistake, and he'd refund it. I told them to cancel the whole order as I was never told there was a delivery charge. He tried to explain they have to charge and I understand there should be a charge, but I've order this before and I've never been charged the price I was being charged. read more

I've passed La Mamma up at least 100 times when looking for dinner nearby. The place is dingy on the outside and dingy on the inside. Their enormous menu spans at least three continents. After 30 seconds of looking around, all my self-preservation instincts were telling me to get the fuck out. Mamma must have seen the suspicious look on my face because she started firing options at me. In the middle of her assault, she hits me with "tenemos empanadas". WE HAVE EMPANADAS. I love empanadas! I eyed her separate empanada menu. Beef. Chicken. Pepperoni and cheese. Just cheese. Ham and cheese. And lots more options, each for 1.50. I went with the beef, chicken, and pepperoni empanadas. But she ignored me and gave me beef, pepperoni, and just cheese. Fine. They were fantastic! I thought they might be homemade, so I asked. And yes they are. She said I had to try their Chilean sandwich and I promised I would next time. In hindsight, I should have ordered 4 empanadas. So, if you're hungry get 4 instead. That's all I have on La Mamma for now. I'll update my review after I try the Chilean sandwich. UPDATE: I tried the beef chacarero sandwich. Its got a lot going for it: it is made with La Mamma's own bread, it has lots of steak, and interesting toppings like green beans, some kind of garlicky Chilean guacamole, tomatoes, and mayo. The "and more" part of La Mamma is Latin food specifically El Salvadorean pupusas and empanadas and possibly other stuff I haven't yet discovered. They have 3 types of pupusas as well as a ton of different types of empanadas, both meat and vegetable filled. Some empanadas include - corn, broccoli, spinach, mushroom, chicken, beef, etc. All are also filled with cheese. In fact, those little empanadas are PACKED with cheese. As for the pizza- it's run of the mill, a-ok pizza. They sell slices too. Now friends, this isn't the classiest of joints. This is a hole in the wall corner pizza place with 80s style booth seating, and all sorts of characters come in and out. I once saw a college kid projectile vomit from his seat and his poor friend helped clean it up. What's lovely about La Mamma is that it's open late, closes at 1-2am! Each combination adds a new layer of satisfaction and utter mouth-stuffing bliss. Price. It's cheap. Like, really cheap for Boston. A large 16" cheese pizza starts at $9.00, and the ricotta is only $2.00 more. An $11.00 pizza that tastes this good? I'm still trying to figure out how they get away with it, but hey, I'm not complaining! Delivery Hours, Speed, and Fee. I wish La Mamma would extend their hours to 2AM, but I guess that's my incentive to stop drinking earlier and get my order in by 1AM! I've always ordered through Grubhub.com, and even during peak delivery hours on weekends, La Mamma always beats the delivery time estimate, usually between 30-40 minutes. And, delivery is FREE, so tip your driver extra generously. Friendly Drivers. Many people may not care as much about this or simply overlook it, but I do not. I've had drivers from other restaurants practically throw my order into my hands and sprint away, without any "thank you" or "have a good night." Not at La Mamma, though. Every driver has greeted me with a smile, thanked me for my order, and wished me a good night. Considering I am often one of their last deliveries (I'm keeping them working longer), I truly appreciate this. Other than the above, it should also be noted that drinking beer makes me crave pizza. I have to say, empanada here are just amazing. I decided to get two empanadas, a spinach and a cheese, around 9 pm. They started to make them (not just heating the already made ones) after I ordered. They said it will take about ten minutes, but It does not take that much time, well at least I felt so much quicker. Both empanadas were all freshly baked. The shell was perfect, perfect thickness, hard on the outside but soft on the inside. Fillings were satisfying as well. They were never stingy with the fillings. They called to ask about it, and I received an angry phone call from the delivery driver telling me he has the "facts" that he delivered it. My colleagues and I are no strangers to bad delivery food. This place takes the cake (if that cake is made of salt, rock-hard pizza crust, wilted lettuce and terrible, terrible ranch dressing.) Everything was god-awful. The chicken was tough and dry, the fries were chewy and damp, the subs were loaded with salt, neither italian sub came with hots (although one had some kind of weird red relish sauce), the pizza was hard enough to use as a hammer. Not once, twice, and BOTH times they made me pay full-price. Another time I walked in and the cook was sleeping at a table. It took a couple minutes of standing at the counter for him to wake up and take our order. I have friends in the neighborhood who have had similar experiences, but I'm not going to share second-hand stories via Yelp. Also, good luck turning from Quint Ave onto Brighton Ave with the delivery truck driver CONSTANTLY parked like a jerk. I ordered the large box of calamari and I received about 10 BURNT, terribly cooked pieces of calamari. I was SHOCKED. It was a large box but the contents inside were disappointing. Their pizza is completely average, crafted with the same nonchalance with which the owners answer the phone. For Boston, though, average is actually far above average. What sets this place apart, however, is their selection of delectable subs and empandas ($1.50). Staples like the Chicken Parm and Italian subs are modestly priced yet stacked high and wide and bursting with colors and flavor. The empanadas are small but equally delicious. Try these and their specialty dishes and you won't be disappointed. I talk to some people who are put off by this place because of the rudeness they perceive behind the counter. True, the LaMama guy rarely smiles or exchanges a kind word, but once I left my credit-card behind and he chased me and caught me in front of the Burger King on Brighton Ave. I was impressed. I wouldn't order the pizza here. Despite being billed mostly as a pizza place, the pizza is thin and sub-par. What earns the four stars is the Latin food here! I tried a broccoli empanada which I now look back on as The Best Broccoli Empanada Of My Young Life. It tasted like a crispy pocket full of piping hot cream of broccoli soup (not that watery though). In the best way possible. Also less than $2. The man at the counter was very friendly and I see from other reviews that this is not typical. Maybe he was in a good mood. Maybe I was looking particularly bodacious that day. Whatever the reason, he offered me some homemade hot sauce which was amazingly flavorful and delicious.
