Met my friend for dinner here. We ordered a variety of small bites. I tried the ceviche trio and empanada sampler but canceled the sampler for just chicken empanada because I was full overall, the food was great. I liked the empanadas the best since the crust was crispy and flaky and it was completely filled with chicken. The place is huge so the ambiance is less quaint. Our waitress was good but she didn't have to find the wine we ordered as it never came. When our wine glasses were empty we had to ask for it to be refilled. The place was busy in a Thursday at 6:30 pm. It's on the more expensive side $$$$

Checked out this well-known Peruvian restaurant over the weekend, located right next to Pier 1. They offer both a tasting menu and an à la carte menu. We decided to order à la carte so we could choose all of our favorites. Overall, everything was absolutely delicious, and the ingredients were incredibly fresh. The price is expensive though and the service was quite slow as the restaurant got very busy. My favorite dish was their signature Gran Bandeja Cebichera, a chilled seafood platter featuring ceviche, crab topped with purple sweet potato purée, charcoal-seared nigiri, sashimi, octopus, and jumbo prawns. Every bite was fresh and vibrant, and the variety of sauces created a wonderful balance of bright citrus, natural sweetness, and umami. It was layered, refreshing, and full of flavor. Among the hot dishes, I especially loved the whole charcoal-grilled cauliflower, served with eggplant purée, crispy garlic chips, and a sweet pepper sauce. It had a beautifully charred exterior while remaining tender inside, with an amazing smoky aroma. If you enjoy cocktails, their Pisco Sour is a must-try. As Peru's most iconic cocktail, it strikes a perfect balance between sweet and tart, making it crisp, and refreshing.

Beautiful location, super hip vibe. Menu is a Peruvian excursion that needs a bit of explanation but servers are more than happy to assist. Started with the house chips and aioli, then nigiri, then cod and halibut. The fish was exceptional. Ended with Suspiro and chocolate cake - perfect!

Came here with a friend to try this restaurant in person! I had had takeout / catering for a friend's birthday previously and had been meaning to come try it again :) For food, I got the Chaufa Aeropuerto, and my friend got the veggie saltado! They also give you complimentary taro chips. It was my friend's birthday as well so they gave us a free tres leches dessert with a candle - super cute and sweet of them! The food was delicious, and the dessert was amazing as well! The cake had a good cinnamon flavor, and was creamy and not too sweet! The dishes were also very good. My friend's dish was a bit smoky with a side of rice. My dish was a good fulfilling combination of seafood and wagyu steak, on a bed of rice. Definitely a very delicious meal! The ambiance is also very nice - the restaurant is beautifully decorated. The service was also very good :) Would definitely come back again for more meals!

A what should have been a pleasant catch-up with a close one visiting from NYC turned into a poor experience at La Mar. I suggested a few places by the Embarcadero to meet up. We decided on La Mar. I had been many years ago and remember it being good. Only the bar area is open from 3-5 during the weekdays. Service started fine with our server being attentive and quick. They even came around right before 5 and asked us if we wanted another round of drinks before happy hour ended. We both decided to get a glass of wine. About 10-15 minutes later, we were still on our first drinks when the server came back and told us we needed to close out and leave. I was surprised by this sudden interruption so I asked for clarification. I thought maybe they were changing shifts so we just needed to close out. They said no, we needed to close out and leave because they need the table back. I again asked for more details. I explained we still had our wines we hadn't touched, the bar was more than half empty and they should have told us when we sat down if there was a time limit with the table. At that point, they didn't know what to say so I asked for a manager. At first no one came back except the server who still insisted we pay. So I reluctantly told them i will close out our bill but we'd like to finish our wine before leaving. They then said that was fine, we could stay. A few minutes later another person came to our table and apologized for the miscommunication. They said something about getting us mixed up with another table who had a reservation for dinner there, then told us we can stay as long as we'd like as long as they got the table back for a 6:15 reservation. I'm not sure how the mix-up occurred but what a poor way to end an otherwise solid experience. Drinks and the ceviche we had were all delicious.

Gave La Mar a second chance as last time the food was really good but the service left lots to be desired. This time we were a party of 4 and were celebrating a birthday which they acknowledged and thoughtfully wished happy birthday to our celebrated guest. This time I ordered the ceviche limeño, which was a mix of shrimp, white fish, octopus and calamari served with crunchy corn, soft corn and sweet potato marinated in a delicious sauce with a hint of spice (the base tasted similar to leche de Tigre) Other guests in my party ordered the whole roasted cauliflower with eggplant puree, and the rice with shrimp. Both were delicious. I tried two new alcohol-free drinks: guayaba healer (guava, lime and tajin) and the red October. Both were tasty, however for non alcoholic drinks $12 is a little steep, particularly for the red October which is served in a fluted cup and has a lot less volume than the other non-alcoholic drinks. We ordered two desserts, both were excellent: the suspiro loco with cotton candy and Dulce de leche, strawberries and crumbled graham cracker-like cookies, was crazy and fun, yet well balanced. The second dessert was the tapioca tropical, which is a tapioca pudding with toasted coconut, raspberry and ice cream, which was not too sweet and quite delicious. We got a complimentary coconut tres leches for the birthday guest, which was also delectable. As for the service, it was definitely improved compared to last time, yet not seamless. We were sitting inside this time and had a bigger party. Our waitress was very friendly, however one of the items we ordered never arrived and I had to point it out to them when the check arrived. She apologized and they took it off right away. One of the hosts came to check in on us a couple of times throughout the meal which was much appreciated. Our water glasses were kept full, however it still seems they are understaffed. If I could give half stars they would get 3 1/2 but since the food has been consistently good I guess 4 starts will do for now.

Seafood heaven! My colleagues and I had a lovely dinner here on a Wednesday evening. Our waiter was Carlos who was awesome and great at providing recommendations. I ordered the butterfly pea mocktail which we refreshing abd I loved the colors. It contains: seedlip garden, butterfly pea & ginger cool water lime, agave, ginger beer mint. We ordered some appetizers which included: Limena Causas, Vegana Causas, Yucas, Fried Potatoes, & Plantain Chips. For our main they ordered 2 Lomo Saltado's for the table. Unfortunately I wasn't able to partake due to my gluten allergy so I ordered a special option on the specials menu...scallop cerviche which was decadent. I've never seen scallops as an option for cerviche and it did not disappoint. Other than squeezing the 4 of us on one side of the table which should've only had about 3 of us especially since I was between 2 guys. The food is fresh and delish. It's expensive but worth it if you love seafood! Yum.

I just had a really nice lunch at this restaurant. The salmon dish was simply delightful. The service was very friendly and attentive to all of my wishes. My waiter was very kind to ask for if I had food allergies or food restrictions. I give this place a thumbs up for exceptional service. The ambiance of the restaurant was very pleasant too. 5 stars !

Been here on 2 different occasions and loved both! Food: 10/10. Super fresh fish. Every dish had its own unique flavor. No notes Service: staff is always friendly and service is responsive. If you do the whole fish experience, budget more time as they do space out the courses Ambiance: sat on the outside patio deck and it was lovely. Great waterfront view Would recommend trying the whole fish experience! 7 different dishes all from one fish

Beautiful location at the Embarcadero. Great service with friendly and attentive staff. Plates were overturned at almost each dish so we had fresh plates. For the price point, I was expecting perfection with the food. Some items were fantastic but the main dish, the grilled whole fish was a bit disappointing. It seemed quite dry like it was overcooked. What we got: Cebiche (Clasico): Catch of the Day, classic leche de tiare red onion, habanero, corn, sweet potatoes $32. 5/5, the deep fried crab was phenomenal! Causas (California): Dungeness crab, purple potatoes, avocado quail egg, creamy aji amarillo sauce $36. Beautiful dish and well prepared purple potato, but wasn't that memorable for us. Sides (Yuca fries): Yuca Fritas $9. Can't go wrong with yuca fries Empanadas (Tasting): $34 with four empanadas including Mushroom, Corn, Beef and Chicken. The beef and the corn were good. Grilled Fish (MP $100+) w/ Quinoa Fried Rice: the Quinoa was the best part of this dish. Overall, La Mar has very spacious seating and great for large and small groups. They have the WOW factor for both indoor and outdoor seating.

We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday and overall had a really nice experience! We had reservations and were seated pretty much right on time, which I always appreciate. We tried quite a few things, including the ceviche sampler, empanada sampler, Classico ceviche, octopus, and of course, a Pisco Sour. The ceviches were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. I also really enjoyed the chicken and steak empanadas! The mushroom and corn flavors weren't really for my palate, but I liked being able to try a variety with the sampler. The one dish that fell short for me was the octopus. I order octopus pretty often, and when it's prepared well, it can be incredibly tender, almost with the tenderness and texture of meat. Unfortunately, this one was quite chewy and tough, which was disappointing. The Pisco Sour was delicious and a must if you're coming here! At the end of dinner, they surprised my husband with a complimentary tres leches cake for his birthday, which was such a thoughtful touch. He normally isn't a fan of tres leches, but he actually really enjoyed this one because it was super light and not overly heavy or sweet. Overall, we had a great time celebrating his birthday. Between the ceviche, drinks, service, and birthday surprise, there was a lot to enjoy. The octopus was really the main thing keeping it from being a 5 star experience for me. 4/5 and I'd definitely come back!

The food and presentation were on point. Every dish was delicious and full of flavor. I especially loved the crab tacos and the leche de tigre. The complimentary chips were a great touch and paired really well with the dip. Also, the waterfront view was beautiful and really added to the experience.

    Anticuchos

As a Peruvian, I give La Mar my stamp of approval! I came with a friend and each dish was elevated and authentic! The restaurant itself, as the name implies, serves the greatest seafood hits Peru has to offer. It sits right on the SF Pier (1 and 1/2) and even has a patio overlooking the water and bougie yachts! (Super nice! Bring a jacket for the patio though--this is San Francisco!!) We sat in the main dining room. The main dining room has simple decor--very industrial-looking. Our waiter, Brad, brought us some papas nativas chips and huacatay sauce to dunk them in. I love huacatay and this sauce was fresh and flavorful! We devoured the entire tub of chips. We then got a Causa California which is an elevated classic causa with crab, quail eggs, tomatoes, purple potatoes, and aji amarillo sauce. DELICIOUS! It wasn't plated in the classic fashion, where the crab is between layers of the potato puree, but it didn't detract from the flavor or presentation one bit. Next were the Anticuchos: a slam dunk! I found the flavor to be slightly different to classic anticuchos, but delicious! Pro tip: do NOT let the waiter take away your huacatay sauce so you can dunk the crispy potatoes in the sauce! For our entree, we split a Chaufa Aeropuerto. Again, some creative liberties were taken: broccoli was added when the OG dish usually doesn't have broccoli. The stone dish it comes in also seemed really small--but do not be fooled! Inside is PLENTY of delicious goodness! The scrambled egg on top with the shrimp and Wagyu beef took this dish to flavor town!!! The only thing I would add to it is something crunchy, like wontons. By this point, we were stuffed, but there's always some room for dessert! So we split a Choco-Maracuya. LOVED this dessert! You crack it to reveal the layers. The presentation makes it look like a lemon but it's chocolate! Inside are 2 layers of chocolate and passionfruit cheesecake. SO GOOD--with the graham cracker and strawberry crumble? YUMMmm! The only down side was that someone told my friend the sparkling water was free (it wasn't). Not sure if that was a misunderstanding? Regardless, if you want some classic Peruvian seafood dishes (with some twists) come to La Mar! I know I'll be returning multiple times as I LOVE all of Gaston Acurio's restaurants! Bill attached below! Also, special shoutout to Brad and the entire service team, who were very sweet and constantly checked in to make sure we were having a good time!

It's a pretty small area, but we came at around 4:30 on a Saturday and they still had a good amount of seating left. The workers are all super friendly and service is really quick. We decided to share the fish and chips, which we enjoyed, but pretty standard fish and chips. The fish were fried perfectly, and the chips reminded us of thicker in n out fries. We really enjoyed the sauce it came with, but weren't the biggest fans of the hot sauce. I also appreciated that it came with limes, it really enhanced the fish! After finishing the fish and chips, we had been wishing we had tried the tuna melt since we've never had one, and wow I'm glad we gave it a try! The toasted sourdough and the tuna paired so together, and the side of pickled vegetables were a great compliment to the dish. I really loved the Russian dressing, it added a great tang to the sandwich. Definitely glad we were still hungry after the fish and chips because the Tuna Melt was incredible! Definitely want to come back for this again
