La Mar is a Peruvian seafood restaurant in pier 1 1/2 in San Francisco a few steps away from the Ferry building. The decor and atmosphere give the impression of a fine dining experience, unfortunately I'll have to say the prices and quality of service are not justified. Let's start with the food. The food was good, particularly the cebiche leche de tigre. It was very traditional Peruvian style and had the right balance of acidity and spice and sweetness from the fish. The chicha morada (traditional Peruvian non alcoholic drink) was on point. The octopus anticucho was good. The octopus is expertly cooked and tender. The olive sauce and mushroom, potato and Lima been yellow sauce was also good; however, the dish lacked some brightness from acidity. The service: My party waited to be seated even though we had a reservation. Partly because their iPad system wasn't working and the hostess had to charge a back up iPad to check us in. It also seems they are understaffed. The host that took us to our table ended up taking our order because our sever took too long to come check in on us. We ordered some fried yucca as a appetizer however we were done with our meal and had to remind the waiter that we had placed the order for them. La Mar really blew me out of the water! The service was incredibly friendly and consistent (in spite of multiple private events going on throughout our service - shout out to Luis(?)) This was the restaurant week, but I ended up getting a la carte menu items. I started strong with the nigiri sampler. Peruvian flare mixed with Japanese technique makes for uniquely delicious bites. I really loved the kanpachi with aji and salmon nigiri! The arroz norteño was an interesting dish with a seared duck breast and clams/scallops. All proteins were cooked perfectly, but the rice was sort of a weird mushy mass. The dish had an overall great flavor, I just am not sure what the arroz part is going for. I really appreciate that the server gave me a free dessert, since I didn't order anything while my friends did (saying it's sad to skip dessert). Came here at Pier SF and it absolutely delivered. We started with the empanada sampler (corn, beef, mushroom, and chicken) and every single one was on point. The flavors are subtle but really well balanced. The corn empanada especially stood out--slightly sweet, soft inside, and honestly something I haven't experienced quite like this anywhere else. Booked a table for 4 at La Mar SF for my mom's birthday on a Friday, and we didn't realize it was the first day of SF restaurant week!! Of course we opted for their $90 prix fixe menu. From the start, the service really stood out. The servers and host were incredibly accommodating and attentive, and we always felt taken care of without it being overbearing. The meal started with complimentary potato chips and a green sauce that I'm still thinking about. Definitely not your typical chips because these were super addictive! First course (9/10): - Cebiche Clasico - Tiradito Laqueado (torched ahi tuna) - Causa California (Dungeness crab) Such a light way to start the meal. The torched ahi tuna was actually my favorite dish of the whole night. Second course (10/10): - Pulpo Anticuchero (grilled Spanish octopus) - Conchas Pachicay (grilled diver scallop) The best course. Everything was warm, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. Even my parents (who can be a bit picky) loved everything here, which is so rare. Anyway, let's get to the important stuff. The service was definitely better this time, especially during a busy Saturday evening. The staff was extremely attentive and kind and offered great recommendations. Diana was my server, and she was extremely knowledgeable about the food and made great recommendations. I tried these squid ink croquettes, bucatini octopus/seafood pasta, and the beef hearts. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted so good. The croquettes were light and didn't make me full. It was paired with a tasty sauce/paste that I kept for extra sauce to eat with the beef heart. I haven't tried beef heart before, so trying this was a little scary and off putting, but it was tender really good. Give it a try if you haven't had it before! The bucatini pasta was delicious and filling. The perfect way to end a meal. The pasta sauce was creamy but wasn't too drippy. We came here for a special occasion. The outside is beautiful, with waterfront seating. Although SF summer can be a bit chilly, there are heat lamps and if you ask nicely like we did, they even have some blankets to spare. The food is incredible. We had the Dungeness crab paella, which is unlike any paella I've ever had. It was Smokey from the paprika, and creamy. The crab was lightly sweet and fresh. I enjoyed both drinks I had, the prickly pear margarita and the lychee picchu. We also had the grilled octopus as an appetizer, grilled to perfection and not overly chewy which can often be the case with octopus. We ordered three desserts, all great. Our favorite was the chocolate and passion fruit, decadent and the right balance of sweetness. Service was wonderful, I believe our server was Eric? La Mar is a beautiful Peruvian restaurant that has a perfect ambiance to dine in for any special occasion. Beyond the pretty interior and unique bar decor, there is also an outside seating option where you can bask in the ocean views along the pier. My partner reserved a lunch here for us over a month in advance and it was still decently booked up. My experience here was fabulous, we showed up early to our reservation and got seated immediately. The server was extensively helpful with explaining the menu and giving recommendations, it made it so much easier to decide to what felt like an extensive menu. To start, we got a Lychee Picchu, which consists of bounty white rum, lychee, and lemon. Sweet, not too strong, and cute. Not to also forget, the complimentary potato crisps with sauce. My partner asked the server to bring everything out all at once opposed to by appetizers & course so I can get the perfect aerial shot of all the dishes, to which they of course complied. We decided on Leche De Tigre cebiche(ceviche) which has chopped seafood, onion, choclo, cancha, rocoto leche de tigre, topped with a jumbo prawn. Absolutely delicious, you can't go wrong with cebiche. Very generous with seafood to my surprise. Our personal favorite was the Pulpo Anticuchero, which is grilled spanish octopus, anticuchera sauce, oyster mushroom, and fava bean kapchi. Gorgeous plating and the octopus was so tender, the flavor profile of this dish was perfect. Finally the Lomo Saltado, typical Peruvian dish of wok stir-fried beef tenderloin, tomatoes, red onions, cilantro, jalapeño, oyster sauce, soy sauce, potatoes, and rice. Honestly I never step foot in here because I thought it was a tourist trap. My partner went with a work group and they really enjoyed it so she brought me. We first visited the bar and the second visit out back outside. The bar is nice but being outside is where it's at. Gorgeous view and ocean breeze - ooo la la! All you need is a drink and some bites and you're all set and that's exactly what we did! The sours are a little too sweet and gave me a headache so I went with a more straight up drink and did much better. Came in for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night with reservations at 8pm, we got there at 7:30pm hoping to a table early, no luck, they were still sitting reservations for 7:45 at 8pm, they were really busy. We ordered the Chef Tasting Menu and the Nigiri Tasting. The Nigiri Tasting came with 2 pieces each of the Akaushi Wagyu Skirt Steak with Quail Egg, Ahi Tuna, Hamachi Belly, Salmon Belly & Roasted Tomatoes, all tasted great. WOW! Just WOW! I got back from a beautiful team dinner at La Mar and it was by far one of the most incredible dining experiences I've had in some time! Arrived at 6pm for our Holiday team dinner and were tucked away in one of their dining rooms. First of all, it was decorated beautifully with string lights and of course sea/ocean vibes. When everyone was gathering in, we took some time to chomp on some sharable ceviche + empanadas (delicious). Of course, we had to take advantage of the full bar and snagged a few cocktails. I started and ended my night with an incredible lychee cocktail. We sat down to dinner and the magic happened! First we were served The La Grab Bandeja La Mar which was a beautiful platter of Lobster, Salmon, halibut, and tuna sashimi and shrimp. This was served with some great sauces. For our official first course, we had great Scallops, Roquitas (rock shrimp in an squid ink tempura + pickled vegetables) and some great crab tacos. For our mains, we had the Tomahawk steak (served perfectly medium rare, more rare than medium - my favorite way to have it). It was a little too rare for some, but I love when my steak is still mooing. This was accompanied by 3 different Chimichurris. We also had a delicious Arroz con Cangrejo (risotto) and pescadero Entero (whole catch of the day) which were amazing an flavorful as well. We finished off the night with some incredible desserts. So good, totally forgot the names of them, but one was a chocolate mousse and the other was a hodge podge of ice cream, cotton candy, strawberries, and some crispy pieces. Super yum! I had tried La Mar pre-Covid and fell in love with the ambiance and the food - 10/10. We recently visited again after more than 5 years and it's still as stunning and the food is delicious. We had a sampler which included Clásico, Nikkei, and Victoriano. My favorite was the Tomahawk, It was huge, well prepared and had tons of flavor. The Loma Saltado was very good. It was a bit overshadowed by the Tomahawk, but still held it's own, according to my wife. The Arroz Negro with Stripped Bass was amazing as well. La Mar has a ton of seating and a really nice lobby and entrance. We had reservation, so it was quite easy to get in and to our table quick, even though the place was packed when we walked in. They also have a great bar room where people hang out while waiting for their table. All the servers had their roles down and were super attentive to our party throughout the dinner service. The main dining room is vibrant, very dim, and loud from the music and all the people. You can see part of the kitchen and the specials from the chalk boards near their fish display in the front. They also have an enclosed outdoor seating area with glass walls and pretty lighting. My group of five got a nice round table in the corner, and we could see everything from our spot. We ordered a bit of everything such as the lomo saltado, the empanada tasting (corn was my favorite), octopus anticuchos (very tender and cooked right), scallops, croquestas chifa, cebiche, seafood bucatini, nigiri tasting, yuca fritas, and their big sea bass entree special. Some of the dishes were great and cooked properly, but a few we didn't care much for. The scallops on their shells were small and a bit rubbery, and the nigiri was a hard pass. The rice was over-seasoned and on the harder side, and some of the combinations didn't really make an impact to the meal. The sea bass was super delicious and meaty! The fish was presented very well with it being deboned, split in half, and easily big enough to feed around six people alone. Overall, the food was good, vibes were fun, and service was solid! I've been to La Mar once for a huge party of 30. I have to say that they were well prepared to take care of us. With a prix fixe menu set, ordering drinks was our only task. Oh! Also super cute that they provided us with our own personalized menus. The food I had was great. I can't think of one thing that wasn't delish. We had a great visit to La Mar. The space is beautiful and very spacious, and we were seated right by the window inside the tent with a nice view of the water. The staff was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. We ordered the Clásico ceviche, which came with catch of the day in a classic leche de tigre with choclo, habanero, and sweet potatoes. It was fresh, bright, and flavorful. We also had a tasting of four empanadas (two chicken, one mushroom, one beef), and it was nice that we could mix and match. For mains, the Lomo Saltado was solid, but the Tacu Tacu tasted bland and was just ok. The Pescado Enchichado leaned sweet but was cooked better than expected. The Black Cod Criollo was dry and a bit bland compared to everything else we had. We also tried the guava juice. It was a bit sour. Overall, good food, great service, and a relaxing waterfront ambiance. I would come back but would try different mains next time. read more

My best friend and I came for a nice dinner while we were in town, recommended to us by a local friend. Our server Luis was AMAZING, so warm and friendly! The cebiche nikkei and the salmon belly tiradito were the highlights of the food, but everything we ate was amazing- fresh, innovative, perfectly cooked. The atmosphere was packed and loud but cozy and I loved the interesting g light fixtures. For a drink, 2 cebiches, empanadas, an entree to share, and a dessert, it was about $250 before tip. I hosted a private event here for my medical school graduation. From the start, the event coordinators were timely in their responses, communicative, and clear on what needed to be done before the event. I appreciated that they gave me ideas on how to elevate my event, such as having hightop tables in addition to our seated dinner tables for mingling before the event. The food and drinks were delicious and definitely did not disappoint. The menu was well worth the price for the private event! Booked La Mar for my birthday dinner. I had not been back since the renovations so I was excited to see the new place. They are very responsive on open table and were so accommodating when adding an additional person. Our server was amazing and they placed us at a private table which was perfect for our group. Went to La Mar on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. We started the night off by going to the bar area that opens in the afternoon before the main restaurant. Was very happy with the drinks we got, the service and ambiance. While it wasn't super busy on the day before Thanksgiving I could see how this would be packed on a regular business day. After doing the bar area for a while we were seated at our table for our reservation. We ended as a table all doing the "Around The World" multiple course item. This was great because non of use really knew what to order. Felt like this was a great option to get us all familiar with the different options that we would choose in the future. Overall this was a wonderful evening and would recommend this for anyone who is in the city to try out. read more

TLDR: Great Peruvian/Spanish/Japanese food and I absolutely love the pre-dinner chip services they have here -- not only unique but delicious. Service is usually lacking a bit because of how massive and packed this place always is. Still, the food here is worth coming back for, and there's almost always a reservation available. ------ FOOD: 1) EMPANADAS (5/5) - These are always great. Nice buttery, crisp pastry with piping hot fillings (from chicken to beef to mushroom to corn). You can get a flight to try all the flavors or just choose a set of your favorite fillings. My favorites are the chicken and beef. 2) TRES LECHES (5/5) - I loved it. The cake was thoroughly drowning in various milks. 3) WHOLE FISH (4.5/5) - I'm sure it really depends on the catch of the day, but we loved the whole fish we got here once. It was flavorful, buttery, and large enough to feed 4. 4) CEBICHE (4/5) - Not my favorite ceviche in the city, but I love all the extra accompaniments that come with the dish. Great for pairing with your table chips. 5) LOMO SALTADO BEEF (4/5) - I love all the veggies the beef gets stir fried with, especially the tomatoes. The beef itself was good but it was a little tougher to chew through that I would have wanted. 6) SALMON (3/5) - Not as tender as I would like and it just didn't taste that great. ------ SERVICE: * Usually slow. Will take a long time to order but the environment is nice at La Mar so it's not too bad to wait a bit. * In general the restaurant feels understaffed, from the massive crowds that can accumulate at the check in counter to the busy waiters running through the aisles of the restaurant. ------ AMBIANCE/ENVIRONMENT: * This is a beautiful restaurant with ~four different sections. There are two bar areas, an indoor dining area, and a covered outdoor dining area. Hands down best Peruvian restaurant! Walked in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. Was seated quickly, the servers are very attentive and kind. The restaurant itself was clean and spacious. What we ordered: Chicken Anticuchos : 10/10 The chicken was so tender and flavorful. It has Peruvian sauces on it that gave some heat to it. Also had potatoes and "choclo" Peruvian corn which gave a nice start to our experience. Lomo Saltado : 10/10 My favorite dish! Every part made it amazing, meat was delicious.
