Sal's Pizza & Pasta - Old Saybrook, CT Slice Mob Takeover Nine members of the Slice Mob walked into Sal's Pizza & Pasta hungry. The pizzas never stood a chance. Located in Old Saybrook, Sal's is spacious, comfortable, and welcoming, with Italian classics playing in the background and plenty of room for a large gathering. It proved to be the perfect setting for a Slice Mob takeover. A variety of pizzas made their way to our tables, but I started with the basics: crushed tomatoes, fresh garlic, and grated Parmesan. Sometimes simple is best. Built on a beautifully crisp crust that held up from first bite to last, this pizza let the tomatoes shine. They were lightly seasoned and full of flavor, supported by the punch of garlic and the salty bite of Parmesan. No unnecessary distractions. Just a really well-executed pizza. Next up was Sal's Works. Same great crust and sauce foundation, loaded with sausage, pepperoni, bacon, roasted peppers, mushrooms, onions, and mozzarella. This pie struck a nice balance between meat-lover indulgence and vegetable-forward freshness. The toppings were applied with restraint and purpose, allowing every ingredient to contribute. Salty, sweet, savory, and packed with contrasting textures, from crispy bacon to tender sausage and vegetables, every bite worked. As more pizzas arrived, the room got a little quieter. That's usually a good sign. The Slice Mob tends to have plenty to say, but when great pizza hits the table, conversation takes a back seat. What stood out most? Not a single complaint from anyone. And if you've ever dined with the Slice Mob, you know that's about as rare as finding a parking spot in New Haven on a Saturday night. Michael, the second-generation owner, came out to greet us and pose for a photo. Super nice guy, humble, appreciative, and genuinely happy to see us. He also couldn't help but comment on the number of pizzas we ordered. Fair observation. We may have slightly exceeded the recommended daily allowance of pizza. The restaurant is beautiful. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. And perhaps most surprising in today's world, the prices were incredibly reasonable. Judging by the smiles around the room, the empty trays, and the steady stream of pizzas coming out of the kitchen, Sal's didn't just feed the Slice Mob. They won us over. Great owners. Great staff. We had a gift certificate for Sal's, and we had no idea what to expect. We went for lunch around 11:30 on a Saturday and it was almost empty. There were three of us in our party. We ordered a large regular pizza with extra cheese and a large salad. Before the food came out, the server brought us a large basket of warm bread and butter, which we were not expecting. That won us over immediately. Before long, she brought us an absolutely enormous salad. It had a nice variety of vegetables and a delicious balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing. The pizza was perfectly cooked with a slight char, a nicely flavored cheese mix and a slightly sweet tomato sauce. The crust was thin and had a great texture. use to love it- I've been going there for the last 15 years during the summertime! went in yesterday and service was horrible- food was wrong and they refused to replace or take off bill-they gave it 10% discount for an item that we could not eat!! They added spices that were not listed on the menu for that particular item - they said it would add flavor-it was too spicy to eat!! we didn't even bother taking it with us! The second item we had was a pizza and unfortunately, the pizza has also gone way downhill. We will be frequently other Italian restaurants instead. It's too bad if they have a new owner, they should not be changing things if they still have the same owner I wish they would do things as they had in the past. Used to go there for years, referred many people, and did large take out pizzas weekly,, We went for lunch and ordered two soups, wine, large pizza, and two sides if meatballs 650 each..the meatballs were too hot and spicy could not eat them we only took one bite each. When waitress came over, we told her, and we are not complainers,,she said, oh I will mention it, but never came back most decent restaurants either offer a replacement or do not charge, but waitress charged us, so it's their loss, as we have never been back, nor will we ever go there again..Nancy, owner knows my face, and am sure she knows she has nit seen me firva few months? What's not to like about Sal's???? Just finished having yet another delicious dinner tonight. We've been eating amazing food here for years and should have expressed our views long time ago. We live in California and have a vacation house in Connecticut. We've had Italian food everywhere but always anxiously look forward to coming back to Sal's for the following reasons: 1- Excellent food best cheese pizza (the tangy tomato sauce ) best pastas (try linguine with clams in olive oil and garlic sauce ) the delicious bread makes their sub sandwiches outstanding and honestly everything else on the menu is . 2- unbelievable prices, where can you possibly eat so well for so little?? This isnt really regarding the food at Sals its the way the vibe is. I have been going to Sals since they were in the little shopping center on route 1. The owner needs to smile once in a while or let someone else run the register. This shows me a lack of trust in employees overall. I order from here and drive from 3 towns away every two weeks. Yesterday was last time for a long time. This woman see's me and recognizes me and I said hello to her...nothing just asked if paying w a card. Ok sure then I go to say thank you and she simply throws down my card and receipt to sign and walks away. Found my new local pizza joint! Ordered a large pepperoni (extra garlic) and chicken/broccoli Alfredo - DELISH! Pizza was crisp, sauce was great (not too sweet, which I love), quality cheese and the garlic - yum! The Alfredo was also excellent! Rich and creamy, lots of chicken (many just load with broccoli and not enough chicken). The side salad was great too! Usually they're basic with packet Ken's dressing, but this came with homemade yummy Balsamic, and the salad had cabbage, and lovely quality olives (not canned boring black olives), but careful, the black (Kalamata, maybe?) olives have pits. Oh and there was fresh crusty bread too! At first I thought it was a little pricey for take out ($60 w/tip) but this fed our family of 3 for a few days (tasted great left over as well, which is rare) and the taste and quality made it VERY worth it! I will be highly recommending, returning for more lovely food, and I can't wait! I'll probably become a once a week, at minimum, customer. The service, for take out, was pretty good too, considering I arrived just as they were closing. Nice open kitchen too so you can see everything being prepared. I wasn't there long and in a rush, but it looked very clean with a small dining area. I've worked in hospitality and food/dining service for decades, so I'm a bit more picky than most. I had their Sicilian crust, bruschetta mozzarella pizza to go. It was so good. First of all I am not a fan of Sicilian crust, but this was very good. It was thick, but not too thick. It was cooked to perfection for me, very crunchy and black on the bottom. I know some people think black on the bottom is burnt, but I am a fan, especially of a thick crust. The crust was so good I ate all of it, even the ends. The bruschetta was absolutely delicious . I like a fresh tomato pie, but this was so much better. read more

Sal's is a casual Italian restaurant that has a sit-down dining portion, as well as a take-out portion of the restaurant. The take-out portion must be fairly popular, because Sal's number is posted outside the restaurant on all their main signs. We were served complimentary warm, toasty bread and butter. They place the toasted bread on top of the butter packets, and it gets them slightly warmed and ready to spread. You can also ask your server for olive oil. I love that you can get as much bread as you want; carbs for days! My one suggestion would be to serve the bread in a basket or bowl with less holes or openings for air to seep in; the bread is currently served in a metal basket that allows it to cool off too quickly. The pasta is made locally and the desserts are imported from Italy. Pizza dough is made in-house. Sal's Pasta is fettuccine with a creamy white sauce, tossed with mushrooms, peas, and bacon pieces. My husband, who doesn't typically like white sauces, loved this dish! The portion sizes are huge! Two can easily split a dish, which we did, and our entree came already split on two plates, which was a thoughtful gesture! The pasta came with a house salad, which was a great blend of lettuce, shredded carrots, tomato, and olives, covered in a balsamic dressing. Fresh and crunchy and tasty! Their "small" pizzas are larger than your average small pizza. My brother ordered the one with white sauce, sliced tomatoes, and bacon pieces. It was delicious! The crust had a crispy bottom and the toppings complimented each other perfectly. I can't remember what the company is called, but a local company makes the bottled root beer, and it is delicious. I'd highly recommend it! Overall, this isn't a "fine dining" Italian experience, as evidenced by the paper placemats and paper napkins, as well as the somewhat-scuffed dining tables, but for the price, wow, this food is delicious and worth-it! My wife and I only had the pizza so I will need to try more offerings to make a complete assessment. When I say only had the pizza, that in no way is a knock on the pizza! We ordered the Chicago style with hamburger and mushrooms. We got the large knowing that we'd take most of it to go for enjoyment later. They advertise that their pizzas are larger than other's pizzas are, they don't lie. This thing came out and was huge. The crust was great. You have to have a good crust or the whole thing is not worth eating. The toppings were fresh, plentiful and delicious. The restaurant was not crowded at all and the atmosphere was typical Italian-esque. They only take cash so bring it or they have a handy ATM on site. I have gotten Sal's takeout twice. The first time we got Sal's we ordered a number stuffed breads for a party. We requested that one would be dairy free, to accommodate dairy allergies. At pickup time, the amount they charged, was different from the price quoted and as shown on their catering menu. The price quoted should have been around $140, but at pickup they asked for $160, when the pickup person indicated that the price should have been $140, the response back was, "how about $150?" After paying more than expected, we brought the food home to find that ALL of the stuffed breads had cheese, so we couldn't accommodate the dairy allergies. We decided to give it a second chance, only to be disappointed again. This time we ordered four entree's, and two were the same. We requested that one of the same orders, be dairy free, and the other to be prepared normally. At pickup, we checked the order, to find that both of the same orders, were prepared without cheese. And one of the orders was for someone who happens to really love cheese. The other two orders contained chicken. Both people who ate the chicken entree's were immediately ill. On top of that, the bread was stale and dry. To add injury to insult, when we mentioned the issue to the staff about the dairy problems we have had, it was met with rude dismissiveness.
