My wife and I were in town visiting and we decided to go out and eat and went here. It was a horrible experience our sever Romeo was very rude and pushy and being snippy especially to my wife. I get chip/salsa full every single time I eat here. They are ALL yummy. I had the Perfect Margarita, Poblano pepper with picadillo and hubs had the Pork Avodoba. Alamo Heights restaurant has become terrible. The service the last 3 times I've come with my family has been so disappointing. I've been coming to the original La Fogata for 40 years. The Alamo Heights location is under staffed and the staff is not persistent in making sure customers are taken care of. I'm very disappointed. read more

I was honestly disappointed with the experience, mainly due to the atmosphere. It was nothing compared to what I expected, especially when compared to the vibe at Vance Jackson location We came specifically for Restaurant Week after seeing both a lunch and dinner menu advertised. However, when we arrived on a Sunday, we were told they were only offering a brunch menu. There was no mention anywhere that lunch is not available on Sundays, which was frustrating and misleading. Additionally, the owner really needs to address the staff attire. One server, who appeared to be about eight months pregnant, was wearing a uniform that was clearly not appropriate or professional--her top was unbuttoned at the bottom, exposing her belly. The restaurant should provide proper maternity uniforms or alternative attire. Unfortunately, it took away from the overall experience and gave the place an unprofessional, "Hooters-style" vibe, which did not match what we were expecting. Overall, the food was okay, but the atmosphere, misleading menu advertising, and lack of attention to professionalism really affected the experience. read more

It took us way too long to try this place, but we'll be back! Beautiful; clean and very nicely decorated. The chips were warm and crispy, the salsa was roasted and delicious. Overall we walked away with an "Okaaay" experience The food was a bit of a mixed experience for my family. We ordered the Chile Poblano al Carbón, which was a poblano pepper stuffed with shredded chicken and cheese. Unfortunately, it had way too much cheese like an overwhelming amount of cheese where we could barely taste the chicken. The best part of the plate was actually the Mexican rice and re fried beans. We also tried the Chile Relleno, but the batter over-shined the chile itself and it was a sweet verses savory /neutral taste. The batter made it hard for me to taste the chile. That or the chile was under seasoned. On the bright side, my kids really enjoyed the Chalupas Norteñas. We will most likely try a different location next time. Arrived at this place around 4:30-5ish on a Sunday and there was no hostess to be found. It smelled like marijuana right as we walked in too. We didn't know what to do so we kinda looked around for a bit and then walked into the restaurant and took it upon ourselves to sit at a table. There was no worker to be found. No one manning the bar while 4-5 people were already seated at the bar. We were soooo confused. We waited almost 10 minutes before we saw someone working there and they finally come out and give us water and menus. At that point we should've left. But we were hungry so we stayed. The margaritas were $5 on Sunday, so we ordered one. That was probably the best thing we had thru this experience. I ordered the Poquito De Todo that comes with a cheese enchilada,cheese quesadilla,chicken flauta,a steak taco with rice and beans. The rice and beans were so bland, The cheese quesadilla was very greasy, the cheese enchilada gravy had a weird flavor. The best part of this plate was the steak taco. The Arrachera Mexicana meat had an ok flavor but the rice and beans obviously were flavorless. We sat and waited for our waitress to come back by so we could ask for the check and that took about 20 minutes. Then when we said we wanted to pay she took off with my debit card for another 15 minutes which was strange to me bc they take payment on a handheld device, so that kinda worried me. She came back and processed the payment on said handheld. I never got to see what I was being charged for so I asked for the receipt. The receipt never came. After waiting for another 15 minutes, I said screw it and left. We paid $68 for garbage Mexican food. Never again will we go to this place or recommend to anyone else. 1/10 read more

Met up with our wonderful friends Robert and Brandy. We had a wonderful evening visiting and discussing the current events of our country, our lives and the future of everything. La Fogata on Austin Highway offered us the perfect location for our monthly gathering. Their world famous margaritas did not disappoint. We all raved about the taste and uniqueness of our chosen dishes. I had the enchiladas verde and beautiful wife enjoying a very tasty and attractive grilled chicken salad. That 4 stars is really 4.5. The staff is always friendly, capable and accommodating. The frozen margarita is pretty darn good - especially for $5. I did not care for the on the rocks margarita. It is a pleasant if somewhat stark interior. I have not yet been to the patio, maybe this fall? The Camarones Aguachile is very good and a nice sized portion. The Shrimp Cocktail is also good and enough for two (not too hungry) people. On Friday I had the ceviche. I took about half of it home for the next day's meal. The server, after placing it in a plastic container, provided a small brown paper sack with warm tortilla chips. Nice touch. I find the chips to be "just right". Thickness, crispness, flavor and salt are outstanding. When I got home I added some chopped pineapple (and a bit of its juice) I had cored earlier in the day to the ceviche. I think it made it better - more time macerating and the effects of the pineapple bromelian had salutary effects on the dish. Because I am on a diet of a sort - I just order from the ANTOJITOS section of the menu. I'll be back and have some other dishes - I have confidence that they will be pleasing. read more

First time here, visiting from out of town. Service = wonderful. Salsas = very flavorful. Stewed chicken on chalupas = AMAZING. The way this chicken tasted, you could tell it was stewed with flavor for HOURS. This is the way Mexican food is supposed to taste (this coming from a Mexican mind you). My friend and I sat at the bar because she enjoys meeting new people and likes hearing their stories. This was my first time at the Alamo Heights location. I'll call him ' Joe's" continued to talk while perusing the extensive menu, try to decide. They did finally order. But, I did not get my order until about 20 minutes or longer after they got their food. They took so long that I didn't even try it there. I asked them to pack it up to go. The problem must have been in the kitchen and but whoever really knows who mi to t be to blame. I didn't get my food until as take as y an h is ur ass after I place the order. They offered to comp me with free dessert They offered Tres Leches... Yuck soggy cake, no thanks. I asked for churros or sopapillas but was told that since those items had to be fried, I would have to make another choice. Crazy but then I settled on cheecake which I intended on taking home for a family member. OMG guess what they packed up.. Tres Leches cake!! The most interesting aspect of the evening was "Joe.". Apparently he's a regular there? He had obviously had a few drinks prior to our arrival. He had amother woman sitting to his right, my friend was on his left, and I sat to the left of my friend. So Joe proceeded to flirt with my friend, then me and then the woman that he apparently knew. He would flirt with that woman and then turn to his left and the trash talk about his old friend to my friend. He kept asking questions and I guess was trying to see who the lucky girl would be. Not me, I tried not to talk to him cuz I saw him eyeing us as we were walking in. If course he was over 80 but he behaved more like an 8bhear old. He offered to buy us dinner, but after refusing at least 6 times, I ordered. Well, he kept asking my friend what my name was and I replied Mud... By the end of the evening when his hearing aids were floating from all the drinks he had, he must have misheard my response to his ongoing I by interrogation. He stated yelling at me me to get out. He paid for dinner just before we left and was still yelling for me to "... leave, just get the ****out!!" I let tlboth the bar tenders know earlier that he was becoming a problem, but they knew him or knew of him and had our backs and reassured me that they would call ed police before it got to bad. So I let the bartenders know that if I was to ever return that I would tell the that "Mud wants to know if 'Joe' was there?" Cuz if he was, I wouldn't be back. On the way out, I told Joe my name and told him,"I'm sorry you're upset over whatever. But by the way... Thanks for dinner! ". Geez. Maybe next time my friend wants us to sit at the bar so she can enjoy meeting new people, I will be sure that we don't sit near a Joe ever again. Came here for a late lunch and to check out this location since I had never been. There was only about 4 other small groups eating in the restaurant, and it's a pretty big space for this corner lot! Our food was great, same quality as you'd expect. It came out fairly quickly and was delicious and fresh. Now the reason why I'm docking 2 stars off is because of the service we received (or didn't) from our waitress. She was very sweet, but she kept disappearing for long periods of time when we needed drink refills and more chips & salsa. Mind you, there was only 3 small groups dining and 1 small group at the bar. It was NOT busy at all. We had a hard time understanding our lack of service. Overall I'm glad I came, but will probably not recommend this place due to lack of service. read more

On my trips I like to eat at areas that are not local to where I live. I found this hidden gem La fogata. First let me start off with how great the customer service was. My party of 7 was greeted with a smile and they quickly assembled a table for us. Shout out our servers Jacob and trainee destiny were spot on. They were able to recommend items and provide excellent recommendations for items that were sold of. As we were waiting I noticed every server was attentive to their customers like an elevated restaurant. They made sure the entire table received their food at the same time. I love it. Our chicken nachos were different from what we expected. Each chip had a burst of flavor. Chicken was flavored perfectly. Chicken bean and cheese was very delightful. I ordered the carnitas plate and man let me tell you. The pure size of the portions was enough to fill me up 3 times over. Let's not forget the hand pressed tortillas a definite favorite. The charro beans were a steal I don't know how they made it to pack a punch but it was the first thing I finished. The ambiance of this place was great the Latin music made the sitting experience nice. The lighting was natural and just vibrant enough to make you want to look around. I couldn't get a good picture of the amazing looking cocktails the bartenders were making. My overall review of this establishment is 5 out of 5 would return. I'd say if your in the San Antonio area stop by this restaurant they definitely elevated this cuisine and I hope they continue to do so read more

I'm not even sure where to begin with this one. Doesn't seem like there is anyone actually running this place ? To begin we stood at host stand ungreeted for at least 3 minutes and then slowly started to move towards the bar hoping someone would pay attention. Finally a young gentleman came running towards us with a decent effort of trying to sit us down but he REEKED of marijuana. Any way trying to move past it and enjoy our experience seeing as my wife and I are celebrating our anniversary and had our first date here. Once we sat down. We waited at least another 5 minutes to be "served" the girl came over not even sure if she mentioned her name. She seemed like she was sick and was coughing all over our stuff. She asks what we want to drink we order chispas which take about 15 minutes to be made because the bartender is standing around too busy on her phone. Order our food (chicken fajitas) finally comes out the plate isn't even steaming and the chicken is dry. The server is sniffling and coughing while passing us all of our food. Not her fault but definitely not professional so we asked to speak with the manager. When she arrived she smelled so strongly like alcohol and I'm not sure if she maybe has a lisp or was slurring her words. Whatever she was drinking definitely wasn't what we had because she was not there. I explained to her the issue and she just replied saying they're short staffed no complimentary dessert no offer to discount or do anything to turn the experience around for us and make us want to come back in the future. Had to apologize to my wife on the way home and make future plans to properly celebrate our anniversary elsewhere later in the week. Someone really needs to do something about the management at this place. It's so sad you'd have an adult authority figure clearly under the influence and subsequently staff doing the same/ not taking their jobs seriously. read more
